Dr. David Schwartz wasn’t willing to say “no” to Salma. A 13-year-old girl from Kenya, she had the worst case of scoliosis he had ever seen. Without surgery, Salma would likely develop heart and lung problems that could end her life. Dr. Schwartz had Salma flown to Indianapolis for surgery at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent. The operation reduced the curvature of her spine from 170 degrees to 70 degrees, and Salma grew 10 inches overnight.

“My hope was to help Salma be a kid again,” Dr. Schwartz said. “By bringing her here, we were able to save her life. When you can change the course of a life, that’s what it’s all about.”

The Center presents an eclectic mix of concerts, from the Empire Brass with the famed Elisabeth von Trapp to swinging hits by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy to the iconic vocals of Brenda Lee. The holiday lineup leads right into the New Year with the Stars of the Russian Ballet. Nothing compares to the excitement of a live performance!

Sharing musical moments with your family and friends is just the beginning, however. The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative is dedicating the entire month of November to American standards. The Great American Songbook Month will quickly become a new tradition. Join us as we screen classic movie musicals in the Palladium, host a book signing with Michael Feinstein in the Basile Gift Shop and kick-off the 2013 high school vocal competition. Plus, the gallery exhibit “GI Jive: The Music and Entertainers of WWII” is winding down. Located on the Palladium’s Gallery level, this interactive display of memorabilia and recorded music pays homage to the celebrated artists of the 1940s. Visit the gallery on weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm Then, plan to return in December and the New Year for a brand new exhibit on Big Bands.

ACCESSIBILITYAccessible Parking: Accessible parking is available on the Center Green’s loop driveway, just south of the Palladium. Additional accessible valet parking is available at the west entrance on 3rd Avenue.

Arrival: Street level and elevator access is available in the Palladium’s West Lobby located at the 3rd Avenue entrance and is also available in the East Lobby located near the Monon Greenway.

Seating: Wheelchair accessible seating is located in various sections of the venues. Special seating arrangements may be made in advance by calling the box office at 317.843.3800.

PARKINGValet: Beginning 1 hour before the performance time, valet parking is available on the Center Green’s loop driveway, at the Palladium’s south entrance. The valet service is sponsored by Tom Wood Jaguar and is only available for performances at the Palladium.

Self-Park: Secure, on-site garage parking is located south of the Palladium. Enter the Center’s parking garage off 3rd Avenue.

RESTROOMS Restrooms are located in the lower Salon level, Box Tier and Gallery level of the Palladium, and on the first floor in the lobby of the Studio Theater and the Tarkington (all restrooms are handicap accessable.)

COAT CHECKCoat check services are available on a seasonal basis at the east and west sides of the lower Salon level near the restrooms at the Palladium. Coat room facilities are also available at the Tarkington and the Studio Theater.

FOOD & BEVERAGE Concessions are available before the performance through intermission. Food is not permitted in the theaters.

BASILE CAFÉ Basile Café is located in the East Lobby (for more information and hours of operation see page 9.)

LATE ARRIVAL POLICY Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of house management. Video and audio simulcast of the performance is available in the lobbies for your convenience.

EMERGENCY PROCEDUREIn the event of an emergency, you will be instructed by an announcement indicating the best method of exit. Please notice the multiple red exit signs. For your safety, please exit in a calm and orderly manner.

POLICY ON CHILDREN Children 4 and older are welcome to attend performances.

NO SMOKINGThe Center for the Performing Arts campus is smoke-free.

WEATHER POLICY The Center does not cancel performances due to inclement weather.

TOURS Group tours of the Palladium are offered twice a month. For more information, visit the Center’s website and plan a visit. Or you may stop by the Box Office during normal business hours for a brief look.

FACILITY RENTALIndividuals, businesses and performing groups may rent the Palladium (1,600 seats), the Tarkington (500 seats) or the Studio Theater (200 seats), as well as seven distinct spaces suitable for your special event. THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK MOVIE SERIESSee classic Hollywood musicals in the Palladium Heartland Truly Moving Pictures and the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative are partnering for a new film series launching the weekend of Nov. 15-17.

The Great American Songbook Movie Series, presented by Printing Partners, will bring classic Truly Moving Picture Award-winning movies to the big screen on stage at the Palladium. The partnership will kick-off with screenings of

“White Christmas,” “The Sound of Music,” “An American in Paris” and an audience sing-a-long of “The Wizard of Oz.”

In addition to movies, select screenings will include guest speakers, plus opportunities to explore music and memorabilia from the Initiative’s archives and upcoming gallery exhibits. The pre- and post-movie events will demonstrate the ties between classic movies and the American songbook.

Single tickets for the Great American Songbook Movie Series, presented by Printing Partners, are $7.50 and are now available for purchase. Through the 1950’s and 1990’s, there has been only one King of the Blues - Riley B. King, affectionately known as B.B. King. Since B.B. started recording in the late 1940’s, he has released over 50 albums, many of them considered blues classics, like 1965’s definitive live blues album Live At The Regal, and 1976’s collaboration with Bobby “Blue” Bland, Together For The First Time.

Riley B. King was born in Itta Bene, Mississippi, just outside the Mississippi delta town of Indianola. He used to play on the corner of Church and Second Street for dimes and would sometimes play in as many as four towns on a Saturday night. With his guitar and $2.50, he hitchhiked north to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1947 to pursue his musical career. Memphis was the city where every important musician of the South gravitated and which supported a large, competitive musical community where virtually every black musical style was heard. B.B. stayed with his cousin Bukka White, one of the most renowned rural blues performers of his time, who schooled B.B. further in the art of the blues.

B.B.’s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis. This

led to steady performance engagements at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis and later to a ten minute spot on black staffed and managed radio station WDIA.

“King’s Spot,” sponsored by Pepticon, a health tonic, became so popular that it was increased in length and became the “Sepia Swing Club.” Soon, B.B. needed a catchy radio name. What started out as Beale Street Blues Boy was shortened to Blues Boy King, and eventually B.B. King. Incidentally, King’s middle initial “B” is just that, it is not an abbreviation.

In the mid-1950’s while B.B. was performing at a dance in Twist, Arkansas, a few fans became unruly. Two men got into a fight and knocked over a kerosene stove, setting fire to the hall. B.B. raced outdoors to safety with everyone else, but then realized that he left his $30 guitar inside, so he rushed back inside to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death. When he later found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to give the name to his guitar. Each one of B.B.’s guitars since that time have been called Lucille.

Soon after his number one hit, “Three O’Clock Blues,” B.B. began touring nationally, and he has never stopped, performing an average of 275 concerts a year. In 1956, B.B. and his band played an astonishing 342 one night stands. From the chitlin circuit with its small town cafés, ghetto theaters, country dance halls, and roadside joints to jazz clubs, rock palaces, symphony halls, colleges, resort hotels and prestigious concert halls nationally and internationally, B.B. has become the most renowned blues musician of the past 40 years.

B.B.’s technique is nonetheless complex, featuring delicate filigrees of single string runs punctuated by loud chords, subtle vibratos, and “bent” notes. The technique of rock guitar playing is to a large degree derived from B.B.’s playing.

In the army, B.B. was introduced to the music of such guitarists as Charlie Christian and T-Bone Walker. “I heard an electric guitar that wasn’t playing spiritual,” recalls B.B. “It was T-Bone Walker doing “Stormy Monday,” and that was the prettiest sound I think I ever heard in my life. That’s what really started me to play the blues.”

Over the years, B.B. has developed one of the world’s most readily identified guitar styles. He borrowed from Lonnie Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, integrating his precise vocal like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of rock guitarist’s vocabulary. His economy, his every note counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players including Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Jeff Beck.

B.B. has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a unique sound. His singing is richly melodic, both vocally and in the “singing” that comes from his guitar. In B.B’s words, “When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by playing Lucille.”“I’m me,” B.B. told Time Magazine in 1969, “blues is what I do best. If

Sidney A. Seidenberg, B.B.’s former manager, likens B.B. to Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra. “B.B.’s goals have always been to be like an American Ambassador of blues music to the world, like Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra are to the jazz world. B.B. is still the King of the Blues.”

In 1967, B.B. performed at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival, a portion of which was later aired over PBS TV. In 1968, B.B. played at the Newport Folk Festival and at Bill Graham’s Fillmore West on bills with the hottest contemporary rock artists of the day who idolized King and helped cross him over to a young white audience.

In 1969, B.B. was chosen by the Rolling Stones to open 18 American concerts for them; Ike and Tina Turner also played on 18 shows. B.B. also made the first of his numerous appearances on Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show.” In 1970, B.B. premiered in Las Vegas at Caesar’s Palace and at the Royal Box in the American Hotel in New York City as well as on the “Ed Sullivan Show.”

Over the years, B.B. has been bestowed eight Grammy Awards by his peers: Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance, Male in 1970 for “The Thrill Is Gone,” Best Ethnic or Traditional recording in 1981 for “There Must Be A Better World Somewhere,” and Best Traditional Blues Recording in 1983 for “Blues ‘N Jazz” and in 1985 for “My Guitar Sings The Blues” from “Six Silver Strings.” In 1970, King’s “Indianola Mississippi Seeds” won for Best Album Cover, an art director’s award. In 1989 King received two more nominations: Best Contemporary Blues Recording “King Of The Blues 1989,” and Best Rock Performance by a duo or group with vocal for “When Love Comes To Town” with U2 from U2’s Rattle And Hum. In 1990 King received another Grammy for the album Live At San Quentin as Best Traditional Blues Recording. In 1991, King was bestowed Best Traditional Blues Recording for Live At The Apollo and in 1993 the same award for Blues Summit. And in 1996, along with Eric Clapton, Jimmie Vaughn,Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Dr. John and Art Neville, King received the Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “SRV Shuffle” from A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

On May 3, 1991, “B.B. King’s Blues Club” opened in Memphis, and also at the Universal City Walk in Los Angeles in 1994, and although King resides in Las Vegas, he plans to play at his clubs at least four times a year. A B.B. King Blues Club opened in New York’s Times Square’s E-Walk in early 2000.

In 1999, B.B. King released Let the Good Times Roll, his tribute to Louis Jordan. “Louis Jordan was a great musician,” says King, “and in my opinion, was way ahead of his time. As people get to know him, they will realize what a great contribution he left to the music of today.”

ABOUT THE CENTER AND INITIATIVEIn May of 2011, the board of directors at the Center for the Performing Arts voted on an affiliation with the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative. The organizations’ individual boards cited a shared vision and a desire to maximize resources as the deciding factor to create an affiliation between the two non-profit 501(c)3 organizations.

The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative is located on the Gallery level of the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to an expansive archive, gallery and administrative offices, the Initiative produces the Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy and Competition. The national endeavor is the only high school competition in the U.S. dedicated solely to the music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-twentieth century.

As Artistic Director at the Center for the Performing Arts, Michael Feinstein curates the Songbook concert series and leads the Center’s musical programming. Given the origin in Indiana of such legendary songwriters as Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael, the Palladium concert hall provides a home for this treasure trove of American music — both physically and artistically.

Families, scholars and guests to the Palladium have the opportunity to discover the Great American Songbook via the combined resources — and concert programming — offered by the Center for the Performing Arts and the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative.

Tania Castroverde Moskalenko was named the President/CEO of the Center for the Performing Arts in June 2012. She is a dynamic leader who possesses a rare combination of exemplary management skills, a passion for music and arts, and a 14-year history of leading strong, finan-cially viable arts centers. Previously, she served as Executive Director of the Germantown Performing Arts Centre (GPAC), located in Tennessee.

MICHAEL FEINSTEINArtistic DirectorThe Center for the Performing ArtsMichael Feinstein, the multi-platinum selling, five-time Grammy-nominated entertainer dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” is considered one of the premier interpreters of American Popular Song. More than a mere performer, he is nationally recognized for his commitment to the American Popular Song, both celebrating its art and preserving its legacy for the next generation. In addition to serving as Artistic Director, Mr. Feinstein performs frequently at the Center for the Performing Arts and assists with programming.
