*Majors which are more appropriate for the fall vs. spring admission cycleNOTE: Pending completed college units and transferable GE courses, some transfer students may be able to begin at Chapman as Undeclared.

when should I consider transferring?CONSIDER YOUR HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIC RECORD…

how can I research Chapman prior to applying?

• High school GPA

• How many years of math and foreign language did you take?

• Did you take the SAT/ACT exam(s)?

• Did you take any AP/IB exams? Visit the respective websites below to find AP and IB scores which are transferable for college credit. • AP equivalencies: chapman.edu/ap-equivalencies • IB equivalencies: chapman.edu/ib-equivalencies

CONSIDER WHERE YOU ARE TRANSFERRING FROM…FROM A COMMUNITY COLLEGEIt’s generally recommended to maximize your units and get as much General Education (GE) done as possible prior to transferring

• 70 units is the maximum unit count you can transfer in from a community college

• If completed, the IGETC/CSU Full Certification through the CA community colleges will satisfy the majority of Chapman’s General Education (GE)

• NOTE: Business and science-related majors have required prerequisite courses that must to be completed prior to transferring (see pgs. 6-7)

FROM A FOUR YEAR COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY If the majority of your units are coming from a 4-year college it’s generally recommended to transfer sooner vs. later because of the differing calendars, units/credits and General Education (GE) requirements that other schools might have.

• There is no cap to the number of units you can transfer from a 4-year college/university but, a minimum of 48 units must be completed at Chapman to obtain your degree

• We recommend saving all course descriptions and syllabi from any 4-year college courses you have completed

• NOTE: Business and science-related majors have required prerequisite courses that must to be completed prior to transferring (see pgs. 6-7)

IS SPRING OR FALL A BETTER TIME FOR ME TO TRANSFER? Review the academic major list on pg. 2 and note the asterisks designating the majors which are better suited for a fall semester entry.

• Community college fairs (during both fall and spring semesters)

• On- and off-campus advising appointments offered both in-person or over the phone

• On-campus transfer information sessions

• Discover Chapman Day (fall annual open house event)

• Take a campus tour

chapman transfer basics• 120 units at minimum are required to graduate from Chapman University

• 70 is the maximum number of units we will accept from a community college

• 60 or more completed college units at the time of application waives the high school transcript requirement

• 48 units at minimum must be completed at Chapman to obtain your degree

• 24 or more completed college units at the time of application waives the SAT/ACT requirement

• Math - Regardless of intended major, all applicants must complete, or be in progress of completing, a transferable college-level math course (Exceptions may be made for certain AP/IB scores)

• Major prerequisites - Plan ahead! Some academic majors have coursework that must be completed prior to transferring (see pgs. 6-7)

• 2nd bachelor degree candidates - Candidates must complete the Global Citizen Cluster (see pg. 5) if not completed during the first bachelor’s degree. Candidates are not eligible for federal, merit, or departmental aid.

Over 80% of Chapman students receive some form of financial aid - either through scholarships, grants, loans or work study. While most financial aid is need-based, merit and departmental scholarship is also awarded. These are awarded based on academic excellence or outstanding talent in the areas of art, dance, music, theatre or writing.

International students are considered for all merit and departmental scholarship.

MERIT BASED SCHOLARSHIPSMerit/academic scholarships are reserved for our most qualified transfer students. We consider GPA, progress within general education, quality of college curriculum, and past and current grade patterns. If applying by the deadline, students are automatically considered for these awards. Awarding of merit scholarship is at the discretion of the admission committee. If earned, merit scholarship information will be included with your offer of admission.

DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIPSDepartmental/talent scholarships are also available to deserving transfer students. When students apply to any major within the departments of Art, Dance, the Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music, or Theatre, they are automatically considered for scholarship. Departmental/talent scholarship consideration is at the discretion of the specific department and can be based on a variety of factors.

11CHAPMAN UNIVERSIT Y transfer student guide10 CHAPMAN UNIVERSIT Ytransfer student guide

meet nicole: a recent cu transfer graduateJust months after graduating from Chapman University with a B.S. in Athletic Training, Nicole Brashears faced an emergency as head trainer at Fountain Valley High School. A football player took a blow to the head and could not feel his hands or feet as he lay on the field. “I knew right then it was very serious,” said Brashears, who earned her degree from Chapman just three years after transferring from a four-year university. “Fortunately, everything I’d learned came right back to me.” Brashears kept the player immobilized, cut off his shoulder pads and deflated his helmet to help ease its removal. Then with the help of the

team doctor and second athletic trainer, she placed him on a spineboard to be transported to the hospital by ambulance. “He ended up being OK,” Brashears said with a smile. Brashears transferred to Chapman after her brother Austin was killed in a car accident. Nicole, home in Huntington Beach at the time, knew almost immediately she wanted to stay close to her family instead of returning to an out-of-state university. Transferring wasn’t simple. Brashears took incompletes in some of her classes after her brother’s death and finished her freshman year online. The transfer process was complicated by switching from a quarter system to a semester system, yet she still wanted to stay on track to graduate in the year she would have at her previous institution. Chapman’s transfer admission team helped smooth the way by connecting Brashears with Jason Bennett, Ph.D., an associate professor and director of Chapman’s highly regarded Athletic Training Education Program. Chapman’s 98.59 percent pass rate on the national Board of Certification exam for athletic trainers helped seal the decision. “When I went to Chapman, everything fell into line,” Brashears said. “There was a sense of relief.” The transfer admission team also worked with Brashears to help her petition the Registrar’s Office to take higher course loads – she completed 21 units one semester – to graduate in four years despite transferring. Working with Chapman’s women’s basketball team as well as teams at local community colleges, high schools and even the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks helped prepare Brashears for her next step: beginning a master’s program in sports medicine at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. “I just had such an overwhelming feeling Chapman was the right place. I didn’t feel like a number like you do at a huge school,” Brashears said. “People cared about my story and what had happened with my brother. That’s how I felt the whole time I was there.”

Note: Nicole attended the undergraduate Athletic Training program which is now offered solely as a Master’s in Athletic Training.
