.… is an exciting new visitor attraction that tells the story of Axminster. Run by volunteers, is a community project and meeting place and resource to support schools and life-long learners. Thomas Whitty House, a Grade II listed building and site of the original Axminster carpet factory, was acquired by Axminster Heritage Ltd in 2012. After major renovation work, the Axminster Heritage Centre now houses the former Town museum in a new Gallery with the historic carpet manufacturing story as its centrepiece. The Centre also offers the Bradshaw Meeting Room for hire, and incorporates a Tourist Information Point and small shop. Heritage Alive is a programme of events, talks, courses and get-togethers that further extends our reach.
Axminster Heritage has already received generous funding from Making It Local (EU funding) and others that has allowed us to renovate Whitty’s original 18th c. Dye House. We now have a major Heritage Lottery grant application in progress to allow us to make further renovations including the Drill Hall and Dyers Garden. Most grant-givers require ‘match-funding’ and that is where you can help. We need to raise enough money to realise our aim of making the Centre a modern interactive attraction appealing to visitors of all ages. We will continue to apply for grants. By becoming a Member of Axminster Heritage you will show grant-givers that we have the community’s support and commitment for this exciting and on-going project.
Together we can do it!
