4. SCIENTIFIC JUSTIFICATION

Briefly describe the disease that will be the focus of your critical review. Include an explanation of why this disease is a good candidate for this specific funding opportunity. Detail the types, roles and validity of animal models used in researching pathology and drug targets in this health area. List the human biology-based models (these may include in vivo, ex vivo, in vitro, in silico approaches). Where appropriate, describe the human gene, protein or cell networks that have been elucidated for this condition.

Include up to 20 references. References do not form part of the word count for this section.

12,000 characters maximum, excluding citations.

5. TARGET PUBLICATIONS

Successful publication of the review is a requirement of this funding, therefore applicants are required to identify up to three potential, peer-reviewed journals of suitable visibility, impact and remit for their proposal, and to add a brief justification for their choice.

Journal title (in full) Justification

6. LAY SUMMARY

Using non-specialist and non-scientific language, briefly describe the human disease that is the focus of your review and explain how and why the animal models employed currently are inadequate as models for the human condition. This summary will be published on HSI/HSUS webpages and will be used by HSI/HSUS for wider dissemination to our supporters and to advertise the work of HSI/HSUS.

7. OUTREACH AND DISSEMINATION

It is critically important to HSI/HSUS that publication of the review is the start of a process and not the end. Therefore, successful applicants will be required to engage in various activities to promote wider dissemination of their review, to generate broader interest and discussion and to raise the issues of failing animal models with a wider audience.

Describe your experiences of disseminating science to the public or media and indicate the routes that you would explore to effectively disseminate the material in your review. This section should specifically focus on how you would reach a non-specialist, non-scientific audience. 3,000 characters maximum

8. TIME MANAGEMENT

We anticipate that the state of the art review will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal by mid 2019. You will be required to work with HSI on the production of the review and we would expect to see a first draft no later than 15 July 2018, with a view to the final draft being prepared by the middle of August 2018.In the box below, briefly describe how you will achieve these project requirements in the time frame indicated. 1,000 characters maximum

Complete the Gantt chart overleaf to indicate the time that you are likely to spend on this review and list your other commitments for the period from July 2018 to December 2018. Include the contribution of any co-applicants (where applicable).
