PACKET OVERVIEW

Dear Applicant:

For more than two decades, students from all over Austin have chosen to attend the Kealing Magnet Program for advanced academic opportunities. The Kealing Magnet Program has a well-deserved reputation for academic excellence. The program offers students a rigorous, relevant and exciting curriculum: core classes at a more advanced level than Pre-AP honors classes and elective classes that are tailored to meet the unique interests of Kealing students.

Our mission is to serve students from every part of Austin ISD. As a result, we have made a few adjustments to our admissions policy. Acceptance into the Kealing Magnet Program will be comprised of two portions: 50% of acceptances will be based purely on the top ranking rubric score totals, and the other 50% of seats allocated will be proportionally divided by the Austin ISD feeder pattern. Applicants who are approved to attend a magnet or performance based application program must show proof of residence within AISD boundaries by the application due date. The proof may include documentation indicating that the student’s family will occupy a residence that has been purchased or leased within 45 calendar days of the application due date. This document is due by February 2, 2018. Residence within AISD boundaries must be maintained in order to remain in a magnet program. If a student moves out of AISD while attending a magnet program, he/she will be allowed to finish the semester in the magnet program. Principals and directors of the magnet or performance based application programs may request proof of residence at any time.

Enclosed you will find application material that will allow us to assess your qualifications and potential success in our limited enrollment program. All information must be received before your application can be processed and reviewed by a team of teachers. Your application must be completed in full and in our office by 4:30 p.m. on February 2, 2018. Please do not submit additional materials as only the required forms will be evaluated.

Please follow the application instructions carefully. The Application Checklist will help you organize your materials. Please fill out the Application Form neatly and accurately and sign it along with your parent or guardian. If you are a current AISD student, be sure to include your student ID number, found on your report card, on all your submitted forms and essay. If you were not enrolled in Austin ISD during the 2016-17 school year, make sure you submit a copy of your most recent STAAR scores and report card. If you are coming from a school other than a Texas public school, please submit a copy of your most recent standardized test scores. You must have your teachers mail the completed recommendation forms directly to the Kealing Magnet Program. The two recommendations must be from teachers who instructed you during this school year or last school year. One recommendation form should be from a teacher who instructed you in math or science and the second form should be from a teacher who instructed you in language arts/reading or social studies. If you have only one teacher in these areas this year, please also request a recommendation from a teacher from last school year. Check in with teachers and confirm that they have the recommendations postmarked by their January 26th deadline.

Finally, you must take an admissions test, which consists of a 40-minute test and a 30-minute essay, as part of the application process. You may attend a Saturday admission testing session at Kealing on January 6th, January 20th or February 3rd. If you come to Kealing to shadow, you may take the admission test during one of the class periods. You may also take the Admissions Test at Fulmore and complete the Kealing essay while shadowing at Kealing.

Estimado Solicitante y Padres:

Durante más de dos décadas, estudiantes de todas partes de Austin han eligido participar en el programa Magnet de Kealing para oportunidades académicas avanzadas. Students applying to the Magnet Program may visit, or ‘shadow’ at Kealing for a day. There will be a limited number of spots for shadowing offered in the month of February. These spots will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. When the at-home essay is submitted, applicants will receive information in person or via email with a link to request a shadowing day.

Current 5th graders will be paired with a 6th grade student host for the day. Current 6th graders will be paired with a 7th grader, and current 7th graders will be paired with an 8th grader. Students may ride the Kealing buses. For Magnet Bus Schedules, go to: www.austinisd.org/transportation and click on “Bus Stop Finder Utility”.

Requests are filled as received. In order to maintain our school’s learning atmosphere, we limit the number of visitors on any single day. You will be notified via email or phone of the specific date you are scheduled to shadow. If you have not been notified of a shadow date by February 16th, please contact the Magnet Office at 512-414-2450.

The Kealing Magnet Office will give your student a letter verifying the day spent at Kealing; however, you are responsible for making arrangements at your school so that your absence will not be considered unexcused.

Habrá un número limitado de puntos para el sombreado ofrecido en el mes de febrero. 3. School Performance(0-10 Points)

School performance is calculated by reviewing both report card grades and teacher recommendations.

Using the scales provided, scores are assigned a number from 0-10. The scores for Report Card Grades and Teacher Recommendations are then totaled and divided by 2 to determine the average for the overall School Performance score (0-10).

4. Admission Test (0-10 Points)Students will take a 40-minute test and complete a 30-minute timed essay administered by a professional school staff member. The timed essay will be weighted the same as the at home essay.

1. Essays (0-10 Points)Applicants will complete two essays. One essay will be completed at home. The second essay will be a 30-minute timed response, completed as part of the admission test. Each essay prompt is designed to elicit evidence of a mindset or skill that is important to a student’s success in the Kealing Magnet Program. Each essay is scored 1-5, with a 5 being the best. If the essay cannot be scored (due to illegibility, response in a language other than English, misunderstanding of the directions, failure to address prompt, etc.) the essay will receive a “0.” Each essay is scored by a team of three teachers.

The best essays are both engaging and insightful. Strong essays are thorough and provide thoughtful evidence to support opinions; they may be deeply reflective and make connections to life, current events, or other disciplines. Successful essays often demonstrate creativity, deep or complex analysis, rich voice and personality, attention to structure, a unique or sophisticated approach, and purposeful well-crafted language. Essays are evaluated holistically rather than by a list of required elements.

Scores for the application at home essay and timed on campus essay are added together and then recorded on the matrix.
