NUOS, a philosophy of energy eand total peace of mind

Working Principle1 - The refrigerant fluid crosses the evaporator and absorbs the heat from the air drawn in by the fan. This process

ensures that the refrigerant changes phase by evaporating.

2 - The compressor increases the pressure of the refrigerant gas which causes it to increase in temperature.

3 - Inside the condenser, the refrigerant gas passes its heat to the water contained inside the cylinder. This exchange process ensures that the refrigerant begins returning to its original liquid state by condensing.

4 - The refrigerant fluid loses further pressure and temperature by passing through the expansion valve, completely returning to its original state.

FLEXIBLE PROGRAMMING

With the NUOS heat pump water heater, it is possible toset two water draw off times.

By monitoring both the stored water and the ambient airtemperatures NUOS will start automatically to ensure that the stored water reaches the desiredtemperature at the time set by the user.

ANTI-LEGIONELLAFUNCTIONTo guarantee maximum safety and hygiene, NUOS heatpump water heaters feature the anti-legionella function.

This function regularly heats the contents of the tank to65°C in order to pasteurise the stored water.

GREENIf GREEN mode is selected, onlythe heat pump works, ensuringthe most efficient operation.

AUTOIn Auto mode only the heat pumpworks. However, should the settemperature be higher than 55°C or the ambient temperature is low(0°C), the heating element isactivated, in order to achieve max energy saving and the max quantityof hot water.

BOOSTIf BOOST mode is activated, the heatpump and heating element work at thesame time. This mode has to bemanually selected by the end userevery time hot water is required in asshort a time as possible.

Shaftesbury, Dorset - 3 Bedroom, Terraced houseAn Ariston NUOS 250i heat pump water heaterhas been installed as part of a refurbishmentproject at the three-bedroom terraced house ofa Shaftesbury resident in North Dorset.

The property is located in the picturesque areaof Gold Hill, which is renowned as the locationof the Hovis bread commercials.

The installation, which was completed inFebruary 2013, was managed by Dorset EnergySolutions. The original hot water cylinder wasreplaced by the NUOS heat pump water heaterfor use alongside a solar PV system, whichwould provide the electricity to power theAriston product.

Martin Perrin, Technical Director at DorsetEnergy Solutions, said: “We already knew what

the NUOS was capable of, as we have oneinstalled at our showroom. We recommendedthe product for this particular project because itwas more than capable of meeting theproperty’s hot water needs while running inconjunction with the existing PV system – whichcould actually power the heat pump waterheater.

The installation itself was extremelystraightforward, especially as there was alreadyadequate ducting in place on an external wall, allowing the exhaust air to be sent directlyoutside the premises. We definitely recommendthe NUOS as a renewable energy product ofchoice.”

With a CoP of 2.8 (tested in accordance with EN16147), the NUOS is capable of raising the watertemperature to 55°C with just the heat pump (aback-up immersion is present to bring thetemperature to 65°C) making it an ideal solutionfor off gas properties or as a replacement forexisting electric only cylinders. It also featuresan intelligent control system which allows theend-user to program two separate times for hotwater to be available. The heat pump waterheater was also recognised for its efficiency inthe 2012 edition of Construction ProductsInnovation and Achievement (CPIA).

Furthermore, to guarantee safety and hygiene, the NUOS includes an anti-legionella function, which regularly heats the contents of thecylinder to 65°C in order to sterilise the storedwater. The cylinder also has a five yearguarantee and the electrical components areguaranteed for two years.

Dumbarton -The Glencairn, Public HouseAn Ariston NUOS FS 200 heatpump water heater has beeninstalled to cater for the hotwater demands of TheGlencairn pub and restaurantin Dumbarton, Scotland, following a consultationbetween its owners and localplumbing and heatingcompany Alternagas Ltd.

“These savings, inaddition to solving thewater delivery issues andlegionella compliance, have made theNUOS a first class answer to the waterheating problem.”

John Lavery, Alternagas Limited

The decision to fit the NUOS arose afterAlternagas Ltd’s Director, John Lavery, set upan energy monitor on the venue’s old immersionheater in November 2012, following concernsfrom the pub’s owners about water heatingcosts. He was dismayed to discover that, onaverage, 38kWh per day was being consumed toheat the hot water. This, coupled with waterdelivery problems from low temperatures andhigh usage, resulted in Ariston’s NUOS heatpump water heater being installed in January2013.

John then fitted the energy monitor to theNUOS and was very impressed with the results,as he explained: “The average reading is nowdown to 13kWh a day on the AUTO setting, sothere are even better savings to be made whenthe air temperature goes up and the GREENmode is activated. These savings, in addition tosolving the water delivery issues and legionellacompliance, have made the NUOS a first classanswer to the water heating problem.”Plus, as the NUOS is installed in the cellar area,

the pub’s owners have also reported coolerbeers and the need for less refrigeration, as theexhaust air from the product is helping to keepthe room temperature at the level required.

As a result, both John and the owners of TheGlencairn pub and restaurant have reported thatthey are very impressed with the heat pumpwater heater. With a CoP of 3.7 @ 20ºC (EN 255-3), the NUOSis capable of raising the water temperature to55°C with just the heat pump (a back-upimmersion is present to bring the temperatureto 65°C) making it an ideal solution for off gasproperties or as a replacement for existingelectric only cylinders.

NUOS also features an intelligent controlsystem which allows the end-user to programtwo separate times for hot water to be available. The heat pump water heater was alsorecognised for its efficiency in the 2012 editionof Construction Products Innovation andAchievement (CPIA).Furthermore, to guarantee safety and hygiene, the NUOS includes an anti-legionella function, which regularly heats the contents of thecylinder to 65°C in order to sterilise the storedwater. Barnsley -Just Renewables LimitedBarnsley-based renewables installer JustRenewables Ltd is practising what it preaches, having recently installed a fully operationalAriston NUOS floor standing unvented cylinderwith integrated air source heat pump waterheater at its Wakefield Road showroom. TheNUOS has been fitted to the heating systemalong with two Ariston solar thermal panels, while a monitoring device simultaneouslyrecords how much energy is being saved. Thefully functional display is available for heatinginstallers to study and interact with, enablingthem to learn more about the technologyinvolved.

The installation was the result of a meetingbetween Glyn Burns,Managing Director of JustRenewables Ltd, and Ariston at the Ecobuild2012 exhibition. Having been impressed by therenewable technologies available, Glyn opted tohave an Ariston system installed at hiscompany’s trade showroom in South Yorkshire,as well as offer the products to his customers.

“We’d consulted other manufacturersbut the Ariston unit was the best all-round product available on the market. ”

Glyn Burns, Just Renewables Limited

Glyn explains further: “We were looking for asmall, compact product that was easy to fitindoors as part of a fully operational renewableheating system. However, there are not manyunits available that combine tanks and heatpumps together, so we were pleased to learnabout the NUOS from Ariston. We’d consultedother manufacturers but the Ariston unit wasthe best all-round product available on themarket. We certainly didn’t hesitate in adding“the system to the renewable technologies weoffer our installers.”

The whole system was installed inside two days, and Glyn was so impressed he decided he wouldhave a NUOS installed at his home as well. Thiswas not a difficult decision to make, as heenthuses: “The NUOS offers massive costsavings in comparison to electric immersionheaters or traditional gas boiler systems, aswell as much higher levels of energy efficiency.Indeed, the statistics from the energymonitoring unit on the system in the showroomhave been so impressive they’ve convinced meto get a NUOS installed in my house as well.”
