ProceduresforEnteringStudentsRegistrationTheOSUScheduleofClassesisavailableonlineandcontainsacademicregulationsandregistrationproceduresthatapplytoallstudentsintheuniversity,aswellasthefinalexaminationweekschedule.Theonlinecatalogisthesourceforup-to-datechangesforthecurrentandimmediatelyupcomingterm.Itisyourresponsibilitytoregisterfortheappropriatenumberofcreditsthatmayberequiredforanyfundingeligibilityand/ortomeettherequirementsofthecontinuousenrollmentpolicy.Problemsarisingfromregistrationprocedures,suchaslateregistration,addingorwithdrawingfromcoursesafterdeadlines,orlatechangesfromletterorS/UgradingareresolvedthroughthepetitionforlatechangeinregistrationfiledwiththeGraduateSchool.Alateregistrationfeemaybeapplied.MinimumCourseLoadsTheRegistrarandtheGraduateSchoolestablishcourseloadrequirementsforgraduatestudents.Youareconsidereda“full-time”graduatestudentifyouareregisteredforatleast9creditsduringsummertermor12creditspertermduringtheacademicyear.Youareconsidereda“part-time”graduatestudentifyouareregisteredforlessthanthesecutoffs.Ifyouareadegree-seekingstudent,youmustberegisteredforaminimumofthreegraduatecreditsinanytermyouwishtobeenrolledandaccessuniversityresources,includingthetermofthefinaldefense.

StudentsareresponsibleforstayingcurrentoncourseloadrequirementsthatmaysupersedetheGraduateSchoolrequirements(i.e.,international,financialaid,veteran’s)StudentIdentificationCardYoumustregisterforatleastthreecreditsbeforeobtaininganIDcard(feelfreetoaskanexperiencedgraduatestudentforassistance).ToobtainastudentIDcard,youmustshowevidenceofofficialadmissiontoOSUandproperidentification(driver’slicense,passport,ormilitarycard)totheIDCenter(MemorialUnion,Room103)M-Ffrom8:30to4:30.GraduatestudentsmayobtaintheirIDcardoneweekbeforeandthroughouttheirfirsttermofregistration.Forfallterm,incominggraduatestudentsmayobtaintheirIDcardanytimethroughoutthesummeraswell.YourOSUIDCardprovidesaccesstothefollowingservices.Differentfeesmayapplybasedonstudent,employeeorothercardstatus.http://fa.oregonstate.edu/business-affairs/idcenter

EmploymentandFinancialSupportSourcesofFundsGraduateassistantsarepaidbydepartmentalfundsorbyfacultyresearchgrants.Dutiesofstudentssupportedbydepartmentalfundswillincludeacombinationofresearchandteachingassistancetofaculty.Dutiesofstudentssupportedbygrantfundsnormallyareinsupportofthegrant’sobjectivesanddeliverablesandmayalsobepartofthestudent’sdissertationresearch.GraduateAssistantsGraduateassistantsareemployeesoftheUniversityaccordingtothetermsofthecontractbetweentheUniversityandtheCoalitionofGraduateEmployees.Graduateassistantsfulfillthefollowingworkhoursperweekasassignedbytheirgraduateadvisors:

1. StudentscandefendaslateinthetermastheFridaybeforeclassesstartthefollowingterm.Betweensummerandfall,studentscandefenduptotheFridaybeforefalltermclassesbegin(withasummerregistration).

2. Youhaveonly10daystosubmityourthesiscopiestotheGradSchool(ifyouarenotcontinuingfromMStoPh.D.).

3. Youwillhaveanofficialgraduationdateinthefollowingterm.SatisfactoryProgressintheGraduateProgramThecriteriadefiningsatisfactoryprogressforMA,MSandPhDstudentsaredescribedbelow.TheGraduateCommitteereviewseachstudent'sprogressinthegraduateprogramonanongoingbasis.Thisreviewisbasedonthestudent'scoursework,grades,andtimelycompletionofkeystepstoensureprogresstowardsadegree.TheGraduateProgramDirectorwillinformthestudent,thestudent'smajorprofessor,andtheDepartmentHeadifcriteriaforsatisfactoryprogressarenotmet.Aspartofthesatisfactoryprogressevaluationprocess,thestudent'smajorprofessorwillcompletetheAnnualStudentReviewForm,discussitwiththestudent,andsubmitittotheGraduateProgramDirectorbyMay31ofeachyear.Forstudentswhodonothaveamajorprofessoryet,theGraduateProgramDirectorwillcompletethisform.Master’sDegreeSatisfactoryProgressThefollowingtimelineisdesignedtoenablestudentstocompleteallrequirementsforaMaster’sdegreewithin15months(ResearchPaperoption)ortwoyears(Thesisoption)ofgraduateworkinthedepartment.SatisfactoryprogresstowardaMaster’sdegreeinvolves:

• FilingtheProgramofStudybeforethecompletionof18credits,andatleast15weeksbeforethefinaloralexam.

• CompletinganddefendingtheResearchPaperbytheendoffallquarterofYear2,ortheM.S.thesisbytheendofspringquarterofYear2.

• TakingandpassingthePreliminaryWrittenExam.AllstudentsmusttakethePreliminaryWrittenExamattheendofyear1.IfastudentfailstheexamattheendofYear1,butsatisfiesallotherrequirementsforsatisfactoryprogressinyear2,thestudentwillbeconsideredtobemakingsatisfactoryprogressuntiltheexamisretakenattheendofyear2.ThePreliminaryWrittenExammayonlyberetakenonetime.

• MeetingwithyouradvisorycommitteetoapproveyourProgramofStudy,andfilingtheProgramofStudyformwiththeGraduateSchoolbytheendofwinterquarterofYear2.

• CompletingtheSecondYearPaperrequirementbytheendofYear2.• PassingthePreliminaryOralExamination,includingpreparationandpresentation

ofadissertationproposal,bytheendofspringquarterofYear3.TheGraduateSchoolrecommendsthatstudentsschedulethePreliminaryOralExamatleast6weeksinadvance.Studentsmustprovidetheirproposaltothecommitteeatleast2weeksinadvanceoftheexam,andmustfiletheOnlineExamScheduleformwiththeGraduateSchoolatleast2weeksinadvanceoftheexam.

• Defendingthedissertation,intheformofaFinalOralExaminationsetupaccordingtoGraduateSchoolguidelines,bytheendofspringquarterofYear4forstudentswhobegintheprogramwithanM.S.orM.A.degree,orbytheendofspringquarterofYear5forstudentswhobegintheprogramwithabachelor’sdegree.StudentsmustsubmittheOnlineExamScheduleformandothermaterialsrelatedtotheirdissertationatleast2weeksinadvanceoftheexam.

GradesandGPAInadditiontotimelyprogresstowardsadegree,satisfactoryprogresscriteriaincludeminimumgradesandGPArequirements.SatisfactoryprogresstowardanM.A.,M.S.orPhDinvolves:EarningaminimumgradeofBincorecourses.EarningaminimumgradeofB-infieldcourses.EarningaminimumgradeofCinallothercoursesthatcounttowardsthedegree.KeepingaminimumcumulativeGPAof3.0.FailingtoMaintainSatisfactoryProgressStudentswhoearnagradelowerthanBinacorecoursemustretakethecourse.StudentswhoearnagradelowerthanB-inafieldcoursemustretakethecourse.Ifthecourseisnotofferedwithinoneyear,andthestudentisotherwiseingoodstandingwiththeir

committee,accommodationsmaybemadeonacase-by-casebasistoallowthestudenttomeetthissatisfactoryprogresscriterion.WhenastudentearnsagradelowerthanCinacoursethatisnotacoreorfieldcourse,thatcoursecannotcounttowardsthestudent'sdegree.Thestudentmustretakethecourseortakeadifferentcoursewithagreementoftheircommittee.Inallofthesecases,thestudentremainseligibletoreceiveagraduateassistantshipaslongastheircumulativeGPAremainsat3.0orabove.StudentswhohaveacumulativeGPAbelow3.0attheendofagivenquarterwillbeplacedonacademicprobationforthefollowingquarter.AstudentwhodoesnotraisetheirGPAabove3.0bytheendofthatquarterwillremainonprobationandwillnotbeeligibletoreceiveagraduateassistantship,fellowshiporscholarship.Studentswhodonotmeetthedeadlineslaidoutinthesatisfactoryprogresstimelinewillbeplacedonacademicprobationforthefollowingquarter.Studentswhodonotmeetthedeadlinebytheendofthatquarterwillremainonprobationandwillnotbeeligibletobeappointedasagraduateassistant,ortoreceiveafellowshiporscholarship.StudentsmayappealafindingofunsatisfactoryprogressandacademicprobationtotheGraduateCommittee.Astudent'sappealshouldincludealetterfromthestudentdescribingthemitigatingcircumstancesandaletterofsupportfromthestudent'smajorprofessor.AccommodationsParenthood:Studentswhobecomeparentsthroughthebirthoradoptionofachildwillbegrantedanautomatictwo-quarterextensionofsatisfactoryprogressrequirements.FieldWork:Studentswhoanticipateconductingfieldworkfortheirdissertationsfor6monthsormorecanrequestanextensionofuptooneyearformeetingrequirements.RequestsshouldbedirectedtotheGraduateCommittee.OtherUnforeseenEvents:StudentswhoneedanextensionduetoothercircumstancesoutsideoftheircontrolcanrequesttheextensiontotheGraduateCommittee.
