An enhanced analyzer standard in on-line applications
Total Organic Carbon analysis has been classified
as a non-specific analysis method to determine the
organic compounds in water. Its inherent accuracy
and speed, combined with a low cost of ownership
make it a preferred (standard) analysis method in
many countries and industries.
AppliTek has taken this concept a step further. The
AppliTOC® combines hardware performance with
software flexibility. The on-line analyzer has been
field-tested for many years in a wide range of
applications and environments.
AppliTOC® On-line Analyzer
A Versatile Field-proven Analysis Tool for Industry and Environment
A platform for analysis of several carbon compounds
• Total Organic Carbon
• Total Inorganic Carbon
• Total Carbon
What’s in a name: the AppliTOC® on-line
analyzer was initially designed for measuring Total
Organic Carbon but can be tailored to analyze
specific Carbon parameters. Whatever the choice
of parameter, an up-time of minimum 98% is
guaranteed when combined with appropriate
sample preconditioning systems, making it ideal for
monitoring and control.
Chemical Industry
A typical on-line application of Total Organic Carbon
is the continuous monitoring of organic spills in
chemical and petrochemical production plants.
Depending on the application, a TOC or TC analysis
shall be performed in order to detect and control
possible leakage.
Surface Waters
Total Organic Carbon can also replace conventional
parameters such as COD for assessing surface
waters. Upon your request, the process analyzer
may be integrated in an EcoWatch® river
monitoring station, with all necessary utilities.
Pharmaceutical Industry
Low-level Total Organic Carbon has showed its
qualities for monitoring water-soluble residues in
Cleaning Validation applications. This has several
advantages over “specific” methods: it is less difficult
to implement and easier to validate than
chromatographic techniques.
Water Services Industry
Contamination levels in production of demineralized
water, due to ineffic ient purification or organic
fouling, can equally be quantified by means of low-
level TOC analysis. In this type of application, a lot
of care is devoted to correct calibration.
Versatile; Adjective. Capable of Doing Many Things Competently.
From concept to process analyzer
The AppliTOC® technology is the well established
UV persulphate method assuring full compliance with
Standard Method 5310C, EN1484 and EPA 415.1.
The sample flows continuously into the analyzer and
is acidified to remove all the inorganic carbon present
in the sample. The inorganic carbon removal is
performed in the scrubber unit. The radiation from the
UV reactor and the oxidizing reagent completely
oxidize the organic carbon to CO2. This gas will be
transported by the mass flow controlled instrument air
to the liquid / gas separator. The gas is dried prior to
entering the NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) detector.
The CO2 content is directly related to the total amount
of organic carbon present in the sample.
Specific analyzer configurations
The AppliTOC® can be delivered with a specific
analysis configuration monitoring only Total Carbon
or Total Inorganic Carbon. For example: in case of
Total Carbon, the acidifying stage is bypassed so the
analyzer needs one reagent less.
Several NDIR detectors with excellent linear output
are available in order to suit specific water matrices
or measuring ranges, from µg/l (ppb) to mg/l (ppm)
levels.
Flow scheme:
Total Organic Carbon analysis (Hot - Aerosol phase – UV Persulphate method)
Hardware performance in a functional analyzer package
The instrument itself is equipped with high precis ion
peristaltic pumps, a precis ion mass flow controller
and a user-friendly industrial computer, packed in an
ergonomic analyzer housing. Purging with instrument
air is possible in case of risk of accumulation of
corrosive gases or extreme humidity. The hardened
glass door assures instant visual inspection of the
wet-chemical part.
The monochrome touch screen is used as the
standard interface for settings, manual checking,
exporting analysis data and problem solving.
Programmable auto-calibration and auto-validation
are standard features in the AppliTOC®. Operation
is made easier, reliable data are assured and
unnecessary operator intervention is minimized.

Towards Total Solutions An Integrated Approach to Process Control
Site requirements
The AppliTOC® is typically wall-mounted or
mounted on a separate steel frame. Stable ambient
conditions will improve adequate and continuous
operation of the process analyzer. However, it may
also be necessary to connect dedicated
preconditioning systems in order to present a
suitable, reproducible sample to the analysis
stage. Hazardous areas may require special safety
precautions with regards to analyzer equipment.
All these requirements can add a challenging task
to suppliers of analyzer equipment.
Single Source
In this respect, many of our customers require a
total monitoring solution. AppliTek has the
necessary experience to advice, manufacture and
commission your analyzer system. The Single
Source Responsibility Program is our quality
approach to assure consistent quality until the
final step: the implementation of the analyzer
system.
Along in a tradition of providing complete monitoring
solutions, AppliTek designs and manufactures
several self-c leaning units for sample filtration and
homogenization. A selection of analyzer shelters
and cabinets is available to guarantee safety (Ex-
zone) or stability.
Pro tective analyzer shel ter commissioned at a chemical factory.
Inside: combined on-line analysis o f TN and TOC.
Larger-than-life analyzer: a dedicated concrete shelter, ready for commissioning in Ex-zone.
Inside: AppliTOC® analyzers installed.
Outside: quadruple self-cleaning filtration.
The AnaShell® concept: the essence of the AppliTek single source
approach.
Main screen and data logging
Standard On-screen History displays analysis results
both graphically and numerically, backed up by the
solid state data logger (record history of the last
10,000 results). Incorporated software flexibility: the
screen can remotely be taken over by means of LAN
Ethernet software, enabling all manual operations
and settings from a remote PC screen.
Calibration – Validation – Cleaning
In this screen the AppliTOC® can be programmed
to perform an automatic calibration or an automatic
validation. Automatic calibration, validation and
cleaning can be performed at a fixed time every X
days. “Hold” sets the time after calibration or
validation to block temporarily the 4 -20 mA output
until the analyzer is stabilized.
Correlating analysis results
For stable water matrices, the numerical TOC results
can easily be displayed as COD (Chemical Oxygen
Demand) or BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand)
values, by setting a correlation factor. Please ask our
Application department for advice on this possibility.
Communication features
Authorized users can
remotely take over the touch
screen.
Analysis results are backed
up by the solid state data
logger (up to 10,000 results).
A history of the results can
rapidly be exported in a
chronological data table.
