About the LSSO 2021 – 70th Anniversary Season

In 2021, the London Schools Symphony (LSSO) will celebrate 70 years as a dynamic force in the musical life of Britain’s capital. Hailed by Sir Simon Rattle as "an incomparable ambassador for the dynamism and excellence of British youth" the orchestra aims to give its members a high-quality experience of the orchestral repertoire, from Bach through to Beethoven, Bartok and beyond. Playing in the LSSO is an opportunity to get to know great music from the inside out; to work with distinguished conductors; to accompany some of the world’s most illustrious soloists; and to form long-lasting friendships through the shared joy and excitement of making music together. Previous guest conductors have included Sir Colin Davis, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Richard Armstrong, Edward Gardner, Sian Edwards and Leif Segerstam. The orchestra presents three Barbican concerts plus a summer tour every year. Courses run during the Winter, Spring and Summer holidays, comprising intensive rehearsals and coaching by London’s best orchestral musicians. Participation in all courses is encouraged, but not mandatory. In recent years the orchestra has toured to France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Japan, Poland and Romania. Last season (2019), the orchestra was in Czech Republic and Slovakia. In summer 2021, it is planning a birthday tour to either Colombia or Spain. In the case of genuine need, financial assistance is available for course and tour fees. The orchestra is sponsored by the City of London Corporation and is managed by London’s Centre for Young Musicians, a division of the Guildhall School.
