III EXAMINATIONS AND TESTS

3.1 Examination

3.1.1 The manufacturer provided samples of the Model XGQT1 and XGQT2 grooved couplings in each

of the 10 through 12 inch NPS sizes as detailed below for examination and testing. The samples were

considered to be representative of the product line and were examined, tested, and compared to the

3.2 Hydrostatic Strength

3.2.1 Model XGQT1 Rigid Grooved Couplings

Samples of the Model XGQT1 rigid grooved coupling were assembled to two short lengths of steel

pipe and were subjected to hydrostatic strength testing. With both ends capped, the assemblies were

filled with water, making sure all air was vented out of the assembly and subjected to a hydrostatic

pressure of four times the rated working pressure, for 5 minutes. A list of the pipe and coupling

assemblies, that were tested, are listed in Table 3.2.1. There were no signs of cracking or permanent

distortion of any assembly as a result of this test. These results are considered satisfactory.

3.3 Bending Moment Resistance

3.3.1 Model XGQT1 Rigid Grooved Couplings

The samples described in Section 3.3.1 of this Report were assembled to two lengths of steel pipe and

subjected to bending moment resistance testing. The assemblies were filled with water and subjected

to an internal pressure equal to their corresponding rated working pressure, as described in Table

2.2.1. The assemblies were placed in a fixture that provided support at a spacing of 60 inches (1.5 m)

and were positioned so that the test coupling was centered between the supports. The required

bending moments are detailed in Table 3.3.1. There was no leaking or evidence of failure observed at

the required bending moments. The required moments were calculated based upon a hanger spacing of

15 ft. (4.57 m), assumption of a missing hanger and a safety factor of two. The pipe weights were

used in the calculation of these values were that of water-filled Schedule 40 pipe to simulate a worst

case condition of a system incorporating a non-homogeneous selection of pipe. These test results are

considered satisfactory.

3.4 Pressure Cycling

3.4.1 Model XGQT1 Rigid Grooved Couplings

A sample 12 inch NPS Model XGQT1 rigid grooved end coupling, considered representative of all

Model XGQT1 grooved couplings discussed in this Approval Report was assembled to two short

lengths of 0.188 inch wall and Schedule 40 steel sprinkler pipe and subjected to a pressure cycling

test. The test assembly was filled with water, and vented of any internal air. The sample was

connected to a test apparatus that would increase the pressure to the rated working pressure, and then

release the pressure. This pressure profile was repeated for 20,000 cycles. At the conclusion of the

pressure cycling, the sample was subjected to a hydrostatic pressure equal to four times the rated

working pressure for duration of five minutes. There was no evidence of leakage, cracking, or rupture

as a result of this test. This result is considered satisfactory.
