ANIM3XXX Behavioural Ecology
TRIM: F42211Unit ID: 4176
Proposed New Unit:
Unit Information
Code alpha prefix: ANIM
Resp. Org. Entity: Animal Biology (00761)
Level: 3
2013
Contact: Graeme Martin ([email protected])
Title: Behavioural Ecology
Type: Undergraduate in major(s);
Faculty: Natural and Agricultural Sciences
Academic informationUnit Content: This unit covers the broad area of behavioural ecology—how an animal''s behaviour is adapted to its
physical and social environment. The unit comprises five broad sections: (1) Foundations of Behavioural Ecology, (2) Perception and Signalling, (3) Predator-Prey Interactions, (4) Kin Selection and social Behaviour, and (5) Sexual Selection. The course integrates these themes within an evolutionary framework that explores individual plasticity and the genetic basis of behaviour, along with a strong mechanistic basis of how perceptual systems work (e.g. vision and acoustic communication, as these set limits to behavioural capacity). The lecture course will be complemented by a practical component to develop skills in review and critique of the primary literature and the development of research skills. During a literature review exercise, students will be guided through tutorials to locate and read original journal articles, make use of standard reference texts, and understand basic ideas and models in behavioural ecology. Students will also undertake a research project to develop skills in experimental design, data collection and analysis. In both exercises (literature review and research project), students will communicate their findings through formal scientific reports and short PowerPoint presentations.
Teaching and Learning Practices:
lectures: 2 or 3 hrs per week; practical classes: 3 hrs per week
Technologies: LMS and LCS
Outcomes: Students will (1) understand major ideas in behavioural ecology, including sexual selection, kin selection, predator-prey interaction and social behaviour; (2) develop research skills, including experimental design, data collection and analysis, interpretation and will learn practical skills working with animals; (3) evaluate, critique, synthesise and understand the primary literature in Behavioural Ecology; and (4) communicate clearly and concisely, demonstrating comprehension of the subject.
Assessments tied to outcomes:
This comprises a report from a laboratory research project (40%), individual literature reviews (15%) and group oral presentations (5%) from a case study exercise, and a theory examination (40%). Research project tests capacity to design experiments, analsye data, review relevant literature and synthesise data in the context of the existing literature and show how the experiment moves the field forward (testing Outcome 2). Individual Literature review tests capacity to review literature and synthesise ideas - important precursor to research project (testing Outcome 3). Group oral presentation: builds capcaity to report orally on material covered in literature review - using Powerpoint (Outcome 4). Examination: tests understanding of major ideas in behavioural ecology built from extensive, guided reading of relevant primary scientific literature (Outcome 1).
21/02/2011
Credit points: 6
Assessment items: Examination, 2 hours end of semeste. Literature review, oral report on literature review and report on research project written as a scientific paper.

LECTURE THEATRE, LABORATORY SPACE
Unit will uses allocated spaces for lectures and laboratory classes (currrently allocated for ANIM3364)
Funding and resourcesSource: Faculty/School funds
Details: School will fund; salaries of lecturing staff and staff coordinating the unit, funds for part-time teaching, materials and travel costs for any field and experimental work
ANIM3364 will be deleted and content moved to this unit, and into ANIM3361 and ANIM3362. See attached flow chart.
This unit is a core unit in the Zoology major. This proposal rearranges content of the 4 units currently forming a Zoology major putting material on Behavioural Ecology into a discrete unit rather than having it dispersed across several units. This amalgamaiton allows the School of Animal Biology to align a teaching area with two areas of research strength by using input from research staff in the Centre for Evolutionary Biology and the Comparative Neuroscience group - the latter particularly for sensory ecology inputs. We expect the exposure of these research groups to undergraduate students will also ensure better recruitment into postgraduate programs in the broad areas of behavioural ecology and neuroscience.
