1. A is thrice as good as workman as B and therefore is able to finish a job in 60 days less than B. Working together, they can do it in:

A.20 days B.221days

2C.25 days D.30 days

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Ratio of times taken by A and B = 1 : 3.

The time difference is (3 - 1) 2 days while B take 3 days and A takes 1 day.

If difference of time is 2 days, B takes 3 days.

If difference of time is 60 days, B takes3

x 60 = 90 days.2

So, A takes 30 days to do the work.

13. Sakshi can do a piece of work in 20 days. Tanya is 25% more efficient than Sakshi. The number of days taken by Tanya to do the same piece of work is: A.15 B.16C.18 D.25

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Ratio of times taken by Sakshi and Tanya = 125 : 100 = 5 : 4.

Suppose Tanya takes x days to do the work.

5 : 4 :: 20 : x    x =4 x 20

5

x = 16 days.

Hence, Tanya takes 16 days to complete the work.

14. A can finish a work in 24 days, B in 9 days and C in 12 days. B and C start the work but are forced to leave after 3 days. The remaining work was done by A in:

Simple Interest

1. A sum of money at simple interest amounts to Rs. 815 in 3 years and to Rs. 854 in 4 years. The sum is: A.Rs. 650 B.Rs. 690C.Rs. 698 D.Rs. 700

Answer: Option C

Explanation:

S.I. for 1 year = Rs. (854 - 815) = Rs. 39.

S.I. for 3 years = Rs.(39 x 3) = Rs. 117.

Principal = Rs. (815 - 117) = Rs. 698.

2. Mr. Thomas invested an amount of Rs. 13,900 divided in two different schemes A and B at the simple interest rate of 14% p.a. and 11% p.a. respectively. If the total amount of simple interest earned in 2 years be Rs. 3508, what was the amount invested in Scheme B? A.Rs. 6400 B.Rs. 6500C.Rs. 7200 D.Rs. 7500

Answer: Option A

Explanation:

Let the sum invested in Scheme A be Rs. x and that in Scheme B be Rs. (13900 - x).

Then,x x 14 x 2

+(13900 - x) x 11 x 2

= 3508100 100

28x - 22x = 350800 - (13900 x 22)

6x = 45000

x = 7500.

Page 12: Apptitude Q & A

So, sum invested in Scheme B = Rs. (13900 - 7500) = Rs. 6400

3. A sum fetched a total simple interest of Rs. 4016.25 at the rate of 9 p.c.p.a. in 5 years. What is the sum? A.Rs. 4462.50 B.Rs. 8032.50C.Rs. 8900 D.Rs. 8925

8. An automobile financier claims to be lending money at simple interest, but he includes the interest every six months for calculating the principal. If he is charging an interest of 10%, the effective rate of interest becomes: A.10% B.10.25%C.10.5% D.None of these

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Let the sum be Rs. 100. Then,

S.I. for first 6 months = Rs.100 x 10 x 1

= Rs. 5100 x 2

S.I. for last 6 months = Rs.105 x 10 x 1

= Rs. 5.25100 x 2

So, amount at the end of 1 year = Rs. (100 + 5 + 5.25) = Rs. 110.25

Effective rate = (110.25 - 100) = 10.25%

9. A lent Rs. 5000 to B for 2 years and Rs. 3000 to C for 4 years on simple interest at the same rate of interest and received Rs. 2200 in all from both of them as interest. The rate of interest per annum is: A.5% B.7%

C. 71

At the end of the year, Rs. 33.50 is earned as interest from both the loans. What was the original rate of interest?A.3.6% B.4.5%C.5% D.6%

Explanation:

Let the original rate be R%. Then, new rate = (2R)%.

Note:

Here, original rate is for 1 year(s); the new rate is for only 4 months i.e. year(s).

725 x R x 1+

362.50 x 2R x 1= 33.50

100 100 x 3

(2175 + 725) R = 33.50 x 100 x 3

(2175 + 725) R = 10050

12. A sum of money amounts to Rs. 9800 after 5 years and Rs. 12005 after 8 years at the same rate of simple interest. The rate of interest per annum is: A.5% B.8%C.12% D.15%

Explanation:

S.I. for 3 years = Rs. (12005 - 9800) = Rs. 2205.

S.I. for 5 years = Rs.2205

x 5 = Rs. 36753

Principal = Rs. (9800 - 3675) = Rs. 6125.

Hence, rate =100 x 3675

Some Important FormulasCalendar

1. Odd Days:

We are supposed to find the day of the week on a given date.

For this, we use the concept of 'odd days'.

In a given period, the number of days more than the complete weeks are called odd days.

2. Leap Year:

(i). Every year divisible by 4 is a leap year, if it is not a century.

(ii). Every 4th century is a leap year and no other century is a leap year.

Note: A leap year has 366 days.

Examples:

i. Each of the years 1948, 2004, 1676 etc. is a leap year.ii. Each of the years 400, 800, 1200, 1600, 2000 etc. is a leap year.

iii. None of the years 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 1800, 2100 is a leap year.

3. Ordinary Year:

The year which is not a leap year is called an ordinary years. An ordinary year has 365 days.

4. Counting of Odd Days:

1. 1 ordinary year = 365 days = (52 weeks + 1 day.)

1 ordinary year has 1 odd day.

2. 1 leap year = 366 days = (52 weeks + 2 days)

Page 21: Apptitude Q & A

1 leap year has 2 odd days.

3. 100 years = 76 ordinary years + 24 leap years

  = (76 x 1 + 24 x 2) odd days = 124 odd days.

  = (17 weeks + days) 5 odd days.

Number of odd days in 100 years = 5.

Number of odd days in 200 years = (5 x 2) 3 odd days.

Number of odd days in 300 years = (5 x 3) 1 odd day.
