A word from the Director...NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY DAY CELEBRATIONS

BackgroundthOn that eventful day of 11 May in 1998, India conducted the

second successful nuclear test at Pokharan in Rajasthan and secured a position among the nuclear powers of the world. To commemorate India's enhanced status as a technologically developed nation and to remember the contribution of engineers, scientists, policy makers and economists in pursuit of technological excellence the day is celebrated as National Technology Day all over India. For an organization like CSIR-IIP, which has scientific research and technology development as its core activities, the day assumes much significance.

The Chief Guest for the National Technology Day celebrations was

none another than Prof M M Sharma, an icon in Chemistry

Research and Industry. An institution in himself, his contributions

to development of the industry in terms of technological

innovation are unparallelled.

Delivering his lecture on 'Innovation in Chemical Industry,' Prof

Sharma said, “Technology is the biggest C of capital. Growth of

developed as well as developing nations has been attributed to

technological innovations by the renowned economists of the

world. There should be serious efforts to develop innovative

technologies”, he said.

In his lecture, Prof Sharma traced the history of the chemical

industry in terms of various path-breaking technologies which

have changed our way of life from ammonia synthesis to TEFLON

to polyester fiber to butadiene rubber. All these break-through

inventions are significant milestones in the history of modern

Year 2013 April - June No. 39

civilization.

He laid stress on the need for the industry to adopt techniques which eventually lead to the successful implementation of many technologies. These will result in substantial improvement in turnover and financial advantage in different sectors of the industry such as petrochemical, pharmaceutical and petroleum refining.

'innovation' in general research. He said the term is being used loosely.

Prof M M Sharma is the recipient of Padma Vibhushan (2001) and Padma Bhushan (1987) from the President of India. Professor Sharma was the Editor of one of the most prestigious journals in Chemical Engineering, namely, Chemical Engineering Science (Pergamon Press, UK) from 1975 to 1986.

Dr M O Garg, Director, in his welcome speech, commented on the technological capabilities of India. He emphasized on the need for development of cutting-edge technologies having low cost of operation and environment-friendliness. He showed concern over the rising prices of crude oil and its availability.

Dr S K Sharma, Chairman, Celebration Committee, said that the day gives an opportunity to derive inspiration and strength from our past achievements, to critically review our present position and to plan for the future for developing cutting-edge technologies.

Mr Surendra Kumar, Administrative Officer, proposed the vote of thanks.

rdThe Institute celebrated its 53 Foundation Day on April 18, 2013. The main attraction of the function was the IIP Foundation Day Lecture delivered by the Chief Guest Dr Rajendra Dobhal, Director-General, Council for Science & Technology, Uttarakhand, and Secretary, National Academy of Sciences, UK Chapter.

Delivering the lecture, he said that the need of the day was to develop energy-efficient and environment-friendly technologies

which should be globally competitive. He said that science should not only be a means of bread and butter. The benefits of science should be such that the lifestyle of the whole human race can be upgraded. He exhorted the scientists to come up with technologies that could help mankind achieve a higher standard of life.

Dr M O Garg, Director, CSIR-IIP, said that the Institute has been contributing to the growth of petroleum refining and petrochemical industry for the last 52 years. CSIR-IIP has developed about 78 technologies/processes/products. A large number of them have been commercialized against global competition. Realising the finite availability of fossil fuels, research has been started in the areas of alternative fuels including biofuels, biojet fuel, waste plastics-to-petroleum products, etc.

Prof Samir K Brahmachari, Director-General, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, inaugurated a

130 kw solar energy panel on June 14, 2013, at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun.

The energy from this solar panel can help run about 500 tube-lights, 150 fans and 50 computers in full capacity. The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has provided great assistance to the Institute in this project. The Central Electronics Ltd. will be responsible for its maintenance for two years. This solar panel would also contribute greatly in the protection of the environment and natural resources.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr M O Garg, Director, CSIR-IIP, said that the installation of this would play an important

role in the protection of the ecological system of the CSIR-IIP campus by reducing the carbon footprint of the campus by about 153.738 tonnes per year.

Prof Brahmachari, Director-General, CSIR, who had been on a visit to the Institute on the occasion of the inauguration of the solar panel, addressed the staff of the Institute and talked about his attempts at the strengthening and refurbishing of CSIR as a whole since he had taken over as the Director-General of the Council. He also visited the Crude Evaluation Laboratory, Waste Plastics Plant, Mass Emission Laboratory, Bio-jet Fuel Pilot Plant and Visbreaking Pilot Plant of the Institute.

Water Filter Unit (100 units) .CSIR-IIP. Every laboratory of the CSIR has been keen to work for CSIR-IIP Dehradun had these to offer: raincoats (1000 nos), relief to the disaster-hit people and most of them contributed tarpaulins (100 nos.), stainless steel utensil sets (200 nos), one-day salary to the PM's relief fund. The contributions also plastic tags (200 nos), candles (44 pkts of 968 pieces each) and came in the form of products or processes developed by the match-boxes (63 pkts of 900 pieces each).CSIR/CSIR laboratories to help mitigate the hardships being

faced by the affected population besides food, clothing or other Further, the relief operations team at the CSIR-IIP readied 100 protective items etc. The whole operation was conducted in bags of essential items for distribution in the hills. Each of these close association with the Government of Uttarakhand. bags contained 15 items, viz., wheat flour, rice, pulses, salt, Following is a description of the help & support being provided: cooking oil, match boxes, candles, footwear, tents, rain-coats,

This fabricated pilot plant is an outcome of a collaborative project sponsored by CESS-CPPRI, Saharanpur, UP where sugarcane bagasse pith, a waste generated from sugarcane bagasse based paper industry, has been targetted for conversion into ethanol, chemicals and other energy compounds. This unit was designed by the CSIR-IIP, Dehradun, and the CPPRI, Saharanpur, and has been fabricated by a local fabricator from Saharanpur. This semi-automated pilot plant is capable of hydrolyzing any lignocellulosic biomass with steam and mild acid treatment. Xylan-free treated biomass can be enzymatically sachcharified to glucose-rich broth. Hence this pilot plant for biomass hydrolysis and saccharification

unit can extract pentosan and hexosan from lignocellulosic biomass with almost 85% recovery by the process developed by the CSIR-IIP.
