Outão cement plant… founded in 1904, with an exceptional location, offering the possibility of expeditions by land and sea, and blessed with a rich seam of limestone and marl – the reasons for a successful cement plant.
The exploitation area covers about 100 ha, of which
42% have already been subjected to rehabilitation actions. In this area different techniques
were used while seeking to encourage the development of native species, produced in the plant´s own nursery. SECIL adopted an ecological approach toaccelerate the colonization of impacted areas, recreating the natural habitats ofMediterranean sclerophyllous vegetation surrounding the quarries, improvingthe ecosystem self-sustainability and resilience, and promoting thespontaneous colonization by plant and animal species.
Scientific knowledge and applied research are pillars present in the landscaperehabilitation process of SECIL's quarries.

Serra da Arrábida
… one of the most valuable Portuguese natural heritage sites, with rare panoramic landscapes associated
with an extraordinary diversity ofvegetation, giving rise to
unique habitats.
The Serra da Arrábida Natural Park (classified in 1976), is located in Arrábida Chain an elongated mountain on the southern border of Setúbal Peninsula, about 40 km south of Lisbon. The highest peak of the chain (Formosinho) stands out at 501m a.s.l., surrounded by Mediterranean shrub formations like the maquis and garrigue. Maritime scarps fall abruptly to the ocean in the highest limestone escarpment ofEurope - “Serra do Risco”, providing secure sites for cliff-nesting birds. In more humid conditions and deep soils, prevails a mixed sclerophyllous forestdominated by deciduous and sclerophyllous trees. Mata do Solitário in theunmistakable Solitary Valley, is one of the best examples. At Jaspe exists a small abandoned quarry of Arrábida conglomerates, where it ispossible to observe the natural colonization.
