From the Heart……… Associate Pastor Cheryl Galan

“It’s worthy of your attendance,” she said. Sarah was talking about the up-coming Ministry and Mission Fair that will fill Disciples Hall and Willard Hall with the evidence of God’s activity, within and beyond our church. On Sunday, April 28, from 9:00-10:15 , a Carnival Style experience will come to life! There will be food, games, and prizes, along with informational, inspirational displays. You’ll see what our church does and why it matters. And you’ll be amazed. It’s worthy of your attendance. You : long-timers who have poured energy and commitment over the years into making First Presbyterian Church of Topeka a life-giving, community-serving congregation. You : new-comers and some-timers who are just beginning to form relationships and tap into the experiences our church offers. You : of youth and of age. Little ones in strollers, older ones with walkers and wheelchairs, toddlers toddling, preschoolers scrambling, boomers ambling. Something for all. Something for you. It’s worthy of your attendance. Worthy, commendable, laudable, valuable, precious, and deserving…because this event will make visible the connections God is weaving among us. You’ll see what our church does with the spiritual gifts and passion God

has given us. Tapping into the renewable energy source of God’s Spirit, we draw from a current of vast and never-ending possibility. You’ll see how this current energizes our worship, pulses through long-standing experiences of congregational life and sparks new initiatives in ministry and mission. You’ll see what we cherish and where we are leaving tracks for others to follow. You’ll see who we serve. Beyond the walls and often behind the scenes is a network of care and compassion, sharing God’s love from the heart of Topeka. Quietly, faithfully, we’re sending surges of time and financial resources for the sake of those who need to know God’s love and care. And, you’ll see why it matters, not only for those who are served, who receive hope and help, but also for those who, through service to others, are infused with the peace of Christ. It’s worthy of your attendance. Once upon a time, some friends gathered around a campfire. They laughed, they told stories. They roasted marshmallows. They gazed at the stars. And then they fell into silence, simply contemplating the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After a few minutes, one of them took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone. Then she sat back in her chair and they all watched in quiet contemplation, as the one lone ember's flame flickered and diminished. There was a momentary glow and then

its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. Then someone else stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the fire. Immediately it began to glow, thanks to the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. Don’t we need one another? In Christian community, we share experiences that keep our faith alive, that fill our days with meaning, and create memories we carry with us always. In Christian community, we become who we are. Our life comes to hold the shape and form of the experiences we share. In Christian community, we’re touched by the light and warmth of God’s Spirit that keeps the ember of love alive and burns within us, so that the peace and forgiveness of Christ might spread to touch others, with the gospel’s good news.

Won’t you meet us at the Fair? It’ll be just the ticket, worthy of your attendance! Blessings,

Cheryl

Local Hands-on Mission Day April 27

Can You Give a Little TLC? We all need a little “tender loving care” from time to time! Heartland Camp and Conference Center is no exception! TLC Day is a way volunteers and supporters of the Heartland Camp and Conference Center help prepare it for the upcoming summer camping season. Heartland’s Staff and Board of Directors need help setting up, repairing, cleaning and more. It only takes little more than one hour to get to Heartland and a group from First Presbyterian will head that way Saturday morning, April 27 to work between 9:00 am - Noon. If you can participate, PLEASE BRING: gloves, work clothes, any tools you might find useful, and a heart of service. Doughnuts, coffee and lunch will be provided. If you would like to volunteer or learn more, please contact FPC members Jim Coder at 845-0142 or Marty Snyder at 266-3750 or [email protected].

Christmas in Action Only 5 minutes away from our beautiful church home lives a low-income woman whose tiny house is in desperate need of repair and maintenance. We know what it means to Go-and-Serve and to Go-and-Share….. What would it mean if we were to STAY and SERVE? Please join our growing group of FPC volunteers as we partner with Christmas in Action on their annual, national Workday, Saturday April 27 between 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. Hundreds of homes across the country will be repaired and hundreds of homeowners will know that people cared enough to give up their day to help a neighbor. Christmas in Action’s mission is “to follow God's teachings by working together to preserve and revitalize houses and communities assuring that low-income elderly and disabled homeowners live in warmth, safety and independence.” Skilled and unskilled volunteers are welcome all or part of the day! Sign up on the Bulletin Board in Disciples Hall or contact Lee Walker at 633-0335 or [email protected]. Volunteer application forms are available at the front desk and can be left in Lee’s box who will contact you with information about the homeowner, house and spe-cific workday needs. There are 3 ways to participate! ONE - On Saturday, April 27 between 8:00 – 5:00 we will help her live with more dignity and safety by replacing exterior doors, painting her tiny house and yard cleaning. Help part or all of the day! TWO – On Saturday, April 27 a team is needed to provide snacks and lunch for the work team. THREE - Prep work will be needed between 9:00 am-Noon on Saturday, April 20 to scrape old paint and get the house ready for painting on the 27th. Please let Lee know when and how you can help!
