THE DARK SIDE OF THE RESURRECTION

"Early in the morning on the first day of the week, while it

was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb. She saw

that the stone had been moved away." —John 20:1

Jesus is risen from the dead! Alleluia! "This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it" (Ps 118:24).

"While it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb" (Jn 20:1). Easter often begins when it's dark. Possibly you are still in the night of a broken heart, painful marriage, shattered family, se-vere sickness, or pervasive pain. However, without the darkness of night, we would never see the sun rise. Without Jesus' death on Calvary, He would not have risen.

If you begin this Easter season struggling to hope against hope (Rm 4:18), renew your baptismal promises and have faith in the Father through Jesus and in the Spirit. "Walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor 5:7). Jesus is risen! He has victory over the darkness, and He will manifest it in your life. "At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with the dawn, rejoicing" (Ps 30:6). Rejoice in the risen Christ! Rejoice by faith! Rejoice when you are still in your night, for Jesus is the Light Who is sure to dawn (see 2 Pt 1:19; cf Rv 22:16). Alle-luia forever!

Prayer: Father, should anyone ask me the reason for this hope of mine, may I "be ever ready to reply" (1 Pt 3:15).

Promise: "Are you not aware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Through baptism into His death we were buried with Him, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life." —Rm 6:3-4

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus! Alleluia!

Dear Family, In light of this ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we want you to know that you are in our continued thoughts and pray-ers. This is certainly a stressful time for all, as no one is immune to the fury of this disease. As we were not able to meet as a congregation physically at Mass, espe-cially during this Holy Week and Easter Sunday, we can continue to receive the Risen Christ through a Spiritual Com-munion. Remember, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass can be celebrated through many Social Media platforms. Please refer to the website for the Archdiocese of Miami for a listing of Mass times, or listen through Relevant radio, Radio Paz, or your favorite Catholic website. Utilize Social Media sites such as Zoom, Face Time, Google Meets etc. to join in face to face prayer groups with friends and family. Together, united in prayer, devotion to Jesus and Our Blessed Mother through the Divine Mer-cy Chaplet and Holy Rosary, we can overcome this diversity, strengthen family ties, and grow in faith. Please, continue to financially support our Parish to the best of your ability. Let us know your special inten-tions, and keep the faith. Blessings to one and all. Remain healthy and safe in the security that HE IS RISEN, ALLELLUIA, ALLELLUIA !! Msgr. Jean Pierre, and staff

RESURRECTION SYMBOLS

The butterfly is only one of several tradi-tional symbols of the Resurrection.

The most popular symbol is the egg, which seems to be lifeless but then breaks open to

release new life.

The lily is another common symbol. A dry and lifeless-looking bulb blossoms into one of the most beautiful flowers on earth.

Another symbol of the Resurrection comes from Greek |mythology. The phoenix was a bird that fell to earth and burned, and yet from its ashes arose another bird.

Jesus' executioners destroyed his earthly life, but a new and more glorious life came about as a result of his resurrection. Artists sometimes show this as an eagle rising out of a flame.

Appearing in the ancient catacombs of the early Church is another symbol of the Resurrection, the peacock. The peacock has a spectacularly beautiful tail, which loses its beauty during the molting season. But when the molting season ends, a new and more beautiful tail appears. The allusion in this symbol is to the fact that through the Resurrection Christ's life became more

JESUS IS ALIVE

When Jesus’ disciples went to his burial place, they found an empty tomb. Through the message the angel gave to them at the tomb, and through Jesus’ appearances to various disciples, God revealed that Christ was risen. Two Scripture stories played an especially significant role in the faith of the early Christians: the account of Thomas demanding proof that it was Jesus who had appeared to them and the story of Paul’s transformation from persecutor to apostle through an encounter with the risen Jesus.

The New Testament makes it clear that new life in Christ is based on the belief that Jesus rose from the dead. It is the risen Jesus who is Lord, and when Christians are baptized, they enter into the experience of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The Resurrection of Jesus was a resurrection into divine life. This is different from a renewal of human life as had been experienced by Lazarus when Jesus brought him back from the dead. The fact that a number of Jesus’ closest disciples had difficulty recognizing him demonstrates that Jesus’ Resurrection was more than just a return to life; it was an entry into the full glory of divine life.

THE RISEN JESUS

Nowhere in Scripture is the Resurrection described. Instead we have descriptions of the empty tomb and a variety of appearances of the risen Jesus. We do not see him walk out of the tomb as Lazarus did or get up from his bed as Jairus’s daughter did. He is not a ghost or spirit. He can be touched and can eat food.

But he is totally different. He appears among them, but they don’t always recognize him. Mary Magdalene thinks he is the gardener until he speaks her name. The disciples on the way to Emmaus realize who he is only when he breaks bread with them.

Jesus’ Resurrection is the beginning of a new creation, the promise of new life for all humanity. The focus is not on the events but on the encounters with the risen Christ.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN

TO LIVE EASTER-LY?

† It means that I allow myself to feel what I am feeling, and to work with those emotions, bringing them to prayer and asking the Holy Spirit to use the energy of those emotions to move me forward in some way.

† It means that I attend to people and situations within my circle of influence, always looking for ways to “help souls,” to interpret God’s love in specific circumstances.

† It means that I move into my life rather than try to avoid it, deny it, or run from it.

† It means that I quiet my life enough to perceive what God is saying to me, in my one life, this day.

Jean Pierre and Staff
