A message from the Parish for our EMHC, EMHC to the Sick, Altar Servers, Lectors, Ushers, and for all who serve in a ministry who do not have access to an email: We just wanted to check in to let you all know that we miss you and hope you and your families are doing well. As we prepare for Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter, albeit from home, we hope that you will take the time with your families to pause and if possible, watch our parish services online via Facebook or YouTube. We admit that it is sad for all of us as we are sure it is for you, to not be able to pray with and share the Eucharist together espe-cially during this time of Holy Week and Easter. Our only concern is for your health and safety as well as for ours. As much as we miss you, we look forward to the day when we can be together in prayer. From Palm Sunday to the wonderful overwhelming joy of the resurrec-tion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let us stay strong in faith knowing that we are all children of God and this challenging time will pass. In the meantime, cherish this time with your family and let us take care of each other. We continue to keep you in our prayers and look forward to the time when we will see your smiling face. Take care and stay healthy.... With peace, love and blessings, St. Philip Benizi Parish Staff

PASTORS PONDERINGS

April 12, 2020 St. Philip Benizi, O.S.M Catholic Community Page 4

Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate Easter Sunday, the annual commemoration of the Resurrection of the Lord. It’s generally a lovely day. The Church is decked-out in white and flowers, above all, Easter Lilies. One can generally who are the active parishioners because they are generally the most exhausted from putting together and then participating in the various Holy Week liturgies that preceded this day, and they’d probably be smiling the most as they came to appreciate the whatever Lenten disciplines they put themselves through – be they giving up some things, or taking on additional ones – were now coming to an end. This particular Easter Sunday is of course a different one. Everything around us is, of course, ef-fected this year by the COVID-19 pandemic. You will have watched the Holy Liturgies, and even this one either Live-Streamed or on TV. And any celebration even at home is muted this year by advice by our public health officials that it’d be better to get together with relatives over Zoom or Facetime rather than in person. And even though I am writing this article nearly two weeks ahead of time, most predictions tell us that the daily death toll due to this virus will be much higher than it is today and it will only be peaking sometime, hopefully not in the too distant future. What then to make of this year’s commemoration of Easter? First, it is okay that this Easter commemoration will be different than others. While perhaps not in most of our lifetimes has there been an Easter quite like this one, one can’t imagine that Easter in 1945 would have been a particularly joyful one or really any Easter during the First and Second World Wars. Easter during the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918-19 could not have been all that joyful either. And then there would have been difficult Easter celebrations across the 2000 years since the Resurrection of Jesus. What would have been Easter like in Ireland during the Potato Famine? Or in the United States in 1865 as the Civil War was coming to an end? Or in Mexico during the period of the Revolution? Or in Korea during the Japanese Occupation? Or in Vietnam or Cambodia both dur-ing and in the years following the Vietnam War? There have been some tough Easters. During the first three centuries of Christianity, pretty much every generation of Christians in Rome had to en-dure at least one wave of persecutions, hence disruptions at least a few Easter celebrations. I write all this to remind us that we weren’t born in a Rose Garden. Indeed, Jesus came here to re-deem us in the midst of a fallen world, that remains still, in part, clearly broken. At least we don’t have anyone to easily blame for this current disaster. But Jesus came here, died here, and, yes, rose here, to assure us that all will come out okay, that not even Death has the final word on our lives, that the final word belongs to God. So yes, in the midst of a year unlike any in recent generations, we come together that God does love us, that wants all to have meaningful lives, and above all wants to assure us that no matter what trouble or difficul-ties we may pass through that he will be with us and that we will ultimately pass over to a better place on the other side. Our lives will not be defined by any virus or any oth-er difficulty. Our lives will be defined by our union with God who yes, is even stronger than death. Happy Easter, Happy Resurrection Day to all. -- Fr. Dennis

- p. Dennis

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

LA PRIMACIA DEL DOMINGO

SEEDS OF FAITH

THE EASTER OCTAVE

There is a brevity, a certain terseness, in the scripture readings for Easter Sunday. Peter’s speech in Acts is built of direct, point-ed sentences. Paul’s letters are based on straightforward creed-like statements. Even the Gospel story only briefly recounts what will turn out to be one of the most remarkable events in human history—the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Advertising agents call these encapsulated points of information “bullet points.” Scripture scholars call them kerygmata, or “kernels” of our faith. Actually, “kernels” or “seeds” are good terms for these statements, since throughout the Easter season, we will hear in the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters of Paul, and the Gospel ac-counts of the days following the Resurrection exactly how these kerygmata began to flower, how they continued to grow through the life of the early church. May these Easter “seeds” of faith serve a similar purpose for us, too, so that the life of the Risen Christ will flourish in us and through our witness in the coming days. Copyright © J. S. Sunday, April 5 - Sunday, April 12, 2020 Eastertime lasts fifty days: seven weeks of seven days (seven equals Biblical perfection) plus one day: perfection plus! Like an eight-day Jewish wedding, or a child who can’t bear to let go of Christmas, birthdays, and school va-cation, the Church celebrates the Easter Octave: “the mar-riage of heaven and earth,” as the Vigil calls Jesus’ resurrec-tion; our new members’ baptismal rebirth; our renewal of baptismal vows; our hearts’ “divine vacation” (Latin vacare, “to be empty”), newfound time and space for love of God and neighbor. Make home an Easter garden! Adorn the din-ing table with a pillar candle (your “paschal candle”), a bowl full of water (ideally, from the parish’s baptismal font), a vase of flowers or bowl of sprouting grain with Easter eggs. Even non-singers can handle the three-fold Gospel Alleluia! Let that be your grace before meals, per-haps with a prayer recalling Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35): “Be known to us, Risen Lord Jesus, as you were to the first dis-ciples, in your word, in the breaking of bread, and in every-one we meet.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Lenten journey is now complete, its mission of renewal and preparation to receive new life fulfilled. The call to worship the Risen Lord has been received, and we gather to experience together the consoling presence of Christ in word and sacra-ment. We are at our best today, crowded and cramped to be sure, but the fullest sign of who were are meant to be. Christ has claimed us in the waters of baptism, we have acquired wonderful companions, and together we can accomplish great things. This is the day for rekindling the old flames of baptismal commitment, so we light the paschal candle, and by its light we make yet again the ancient promis-es to reject evil’s grip and empty promises. Today we do not recite the Creed, but respond with one voice to age-old questions. New life has to be nurtured, both the life of the newly baptized and the renewed life of those who have passed through Lent’s refining prayer, fasting, and giving alms. At any Mass during the next fifty days, you may be surprised by grace and splashed by wa-ter! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

CHRIST HAS RISEN

PASTORAL STAFF DEVOTIONS & SACRAMENTS

Where is your sting, O death? Where is your victory, O hell? Christ has risen, and you are overthrown. Christ has risen, and the demons have fallen. Christ has risen, and the angels rejoice. Christ has risen, and life reigns. Christ has risen, and not one dead rests in the grave. For Christ having risen from the dead became the first-fruits of them that slept. To him be glory and majesty to ages of ages. Amen.
