OPENING SONG/WELCOME SONG | “At the Cross”

(by Chris Tomlin)

There's a place where mercy reigns and never dies There's a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide Where all the love I've ever found Comes like a flood comes flowing down At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life I'm in awe of You I'm in awe of You Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white I owe all to You I owe all to You, Jesus There's a place where sin and shame are powerless Where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness Where all the love I've ever found Comes like a flood comes flowing down At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life I'm in awe of You I'm in awe of You Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white I owe all to You I owe all to You Here my hope is found here on holy ground Here I bow down here I bow down Here arms open wide here You save my life Here I bow down here I bow At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life I'm in awe of You I'm in awe of You Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white I owe all to You I owe all to You I owe all to You I owe all to You, Jesus

Welcome Welcome! - We assemble in homes and this sanctuary in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Even as we congregate today in smaller places than we are used to on Easter Sunday; and still we proclaim and celebrate the story of Christ that has not lost its power, even over twenty centuries’ time. This is the day - this is the story - that has power to change lives here and into eternity. We are gathered because generations before us carried this story with them as if it were precious gold. Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Welcome to the time of Easter Celebration! Our presence with God in the places we worship today draws us together in still powerful community. It is Easter morning! HYMN | ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS' NAME! ELW #634 1 All hail the pow'r of Jesus' name! Let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem and crown him Lord of all. Bring forth the royal diadem and crown him Lord of all. 2 O seed of Israel's chosen race now ransomed from the fall, hail him who saves you by his grace and crown him Lord of all. Hail him who saves you by his grace and crown him Lord of all. 3 Hail him, you heirs of David's line, whom David Lord did call the God incarnate, man divine and crown him Lord of all. The God Incarnate, man divine and crown him Lord of all. 4 Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget the wormwood and the gall, go spread your trophies at his feet and crown him Lord of all. Go spread your trophies at his feet and crown him Lord of all. Text: Edward Perronet, 1726-1792, sts. 1-4; J. Rippon, A Selection of Hymns, 1787, sts. 5-6

SCRIPTURE | ACTS 10:34-43 34Peter began to speak to [the people]: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” Leader | The Word of the Lord

ALL | THANKS BE TO GOD! SCRIPTURE | PSALM 118:1-2, 14-24 1GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD, FOR THE LORD IS GOOD; GOD’S MERCY ENDURES FOREVER. 2LET ISRAEL NOW DECLARE, “GOD’S MERCY ENDURES FOREVER.” 14THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH AND MY SONG, AND HAS BECOME MY SALVATION. 15SHOUTS OF REJOICING AND SALVATION ECHO IN THE TENTS OF THE RIGHTEOUS: “THE RIGHT HAND OF THE LORD ACTS VALIANTLY! 16THE RIGHT HAND OF THE LORD IS EXALTED! THE RIGHT HAND OF THE LORD ACTS VALIANTLY!” 17I SHALL NOT DIE, BUT LIVE, AND DECLARE THE WORKS OF THE LORD.

Page 7: April 12, 2020 Worship for the Community Journey Lutheran ......Apr 12, 2020  · to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

18THE LORD INDEED PUNISHED ME SORELY, BUT DID NOT HAND ME OVER TO DEATH. 19OPEN FOR ME THE GATES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS; I WILL ENTER THEM AND GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD. 20“THIS IS THE GATE OF THE LORD; HERE THE RIGHTEOUS MAY ENTER.” 21I GIVE THANKS TO YOU, FOR YOU HAVE ANSWERED ME AND YOU HAVE BECOME MY SALVATION. 22THE STONE THAT THE BUILDERS REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE. 23BY THE LORD HAS THIS BEEN DONE; IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES. 24THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE; LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT.

Hymn | Thine Is The Glory ELW #376 1 Thine is the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son; endless is the vict'ry thou o'er death hast won! Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay.

Refrain Thine is the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son; endless is the vict'ry thou o'er death hast won!

2 Lo, Jesus meets thee, risen from the tomb! Lovingly he greets thee, scatters fear and gloom; let his church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for the Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting! Refrain

3 No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life; life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife; make us more than conqu'rors, through thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above. Refrain Text: Edmond Budry, 1854-1932; tr. R. Birch Hoyle, 1875-1939

Easter Gospel| The Good News of Jesus according to St. John, chapter 20, verses 1-18 1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10Then the disciples returned to their homes.

11But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; 12and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

ALL | AMEN.

Prayers of the Gathered Community Turning our hearts to God who is gracious and merciful, we pray for the church,

the world, and all who are in need.

THE LORD’S PRAYER OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME, THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD; AND FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES, AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US; AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL. FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM, AND THE POWER, AND THE GLORY, FOREVER AND EVER. AMEN.
