In preparation for our Town hall Meetings this week, here are a few of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

about Renew My Church taken from the Archdiocese of Chicago website: Grouping and Discernment Process Questions What is the grouping and discernment process of Renew My Church? Renewal is a process. It requires, envisioning, planning, new methods and new means to bring Jesus Christ to others. There are nearly 100 groupings of parishes and schools across the archdiocese. Each grouping will engage in a process to address neces-sary questions of structure, how to work together across communities within the grouping, and to establish a strong founda-tion for vitality through focused evangelization and faith formation efforts. How were groupings determined? Groupings were determined through a consultative process in 2016 that included feedback and input from archdiocesan and parish leadership, including vicars, deans, pastors, parish councils and lay leadership. How many different groupings are there in the Archdiocese? There are about 100 groupings in the Archdiocese of Chicago. All parishes and schools have been assigned a grouping based on geography (the parishes and schools are relatively close in proximity), similar communities served and other commonalities and affinities (i.e. parishioners occasionally attend Mass at more than one parish in the grouping). What are the steps involved in the discernment process? The purpose of this grouping and discernment process is to provide Cardinal Cupich with as much feedback and information as possible to make final decisions regarding potential changes to school and parish structures. During the grouping and discern-ment process, the archdiocese will provide each grouping a set of initial scenarios that show potential models of how parishes and schools in that grouping could be configured in the future. These initial scenarios are conversation starters. No decisions have been made. Each grouping is then asked to provide feedback on the initial scenarios from the archdiocese and propose alternative scenarios and configuration models. After each grouping has reflected and discussed the scenarios, the grouping will submit a report to the archdiocese with its feedback and alternative scenarios. An archdiocesan commission will review the report and make a final recommendation to Cardinal Cupich. Cardinal Cupich will make final decisions regarding potential changes to school and parish structures based on the recommendations and information he has received from each grouping and the archdiocesan commission. Will our church or school close? The purpose of this grouping and discernment process is to provide Cardinal Cupich with as much feedback and information as possible to make final decisions regarding potential changes to school and parish structures. No decisions have been made. How many parishes and schools are going to close? There is not a targeted number of closures. The archdiocese has a resource limitation that impacts all groupings, which is that we expect no more than 240 priests to be ready, willing, and able to serve as pastors by the year 2030 – about 100 fewer pas-tors than today. This does not mean 100 parishes will close, however. What we will do through the process is evaluate how to organize our parishes with the reality of fewer pastors. Is this really a process that has meaning or are the scenarios a foregone conclusion? How much impact will we actually have?

To set proper expectations, Cardinal Cupich has the responsibility to make final decisions. However, he needs the input of local communities to understand which possibilities will be best for the future. During the grouping and discernment process, the archdiocese will provide each grouping a set of initial scenarios that show potential models of how parishes and schools in that grouping could be configured in the future. These initial scenarios are conversation starters. No decisions have been made. Each grouping is then asked to provide feedback on the initial scenarios from the archdiocese and propose alternative scenari-os and configuration models. How are the initial scenarios developed? The initial scenarios are developed using the foundational principles for viability, archdiocesan context such as the number of pastors available for the future, and local data available to the archdiocese. The archdiocese’s planning office works with each vicar’s team to develop the initial scenarios.

Sunday, April 15, 2018 - Blessed Caesar de Bus - d. 1607 "Like so many of us, Caesar de Bus struggled with the decision about what to do with his life. After completing his Jesuit education he had difficulty settling between a military and a literary career. He wrote some plays but ultimately settled for life in the army and at court... He fell seriously ill and found himself reviewing his priorities, including his spiritual life. By the time he had recovered, Caesar had resolved to become a priest. Following his ordination in 1582, he undertook special pastoral work: teaching the catechism to ordinary people living in neglected, rural, out-of-the-way places. His efforts were badly needed and well received. Working with his cousin, Caesar developed a program of family catechesis. The goal—to ward off heresy among the people—met the approval of local bishops. Out of these efforts grew a new religious congregation: the Fathers of Christian Doctrine. One of Caesar’s works, Instructions for the Family on the Four Parts of the Roman Catechism, was published 60 years after his death."

Monday, April 16, 2018 - Saint Bernadette Soubirous - d. 1879

"Bernadette Soubirous was born in 1844, the first child of an extremely poor miller in the town of Lourdes in southern France. The family was living in the basement of a dilapidated building when on February 11, 1858, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette in a cave above the banks of the Gave River near Lourdes... There were 18 appearances in all... Although Bernadette’s initial reports provoked skepticism, her daily visions of 'the Lady' brought great crowds of the curious... In the vision on March 25 she told Bernadette, 'I am the Im-maculate Conception.' [...] During her life, Bernadette suffered much. She was hounded by the public as well as by civic officials until at last she was protected in a convent of nuns. Five years later, she petitioned to enter the Sisters of Notre Dame. After a period of illness she was able to make the journey from Lourdes and enter the novitiate. But within four months of her arrival she was given the last rites of the Church and allowed to profess her vows. She recovered enough to become infirmarian and then sacristan, but chronic health problems persisted. She died on April 16, 1879, at the age of 35."

Wednesday, April 18, 2018 - Blessed James Oldo - d. 1404

"James of Oldo was born into a well-to-do family near Milan in 1364. He married a woman who like him, appreciated the comforts that came with wealth. But an outbreak of the plague drove James, his wife, and their three children out of their home and into the countryside. Despite those precautions, two of his daughters died from the plague. James determined to use whatever time he had left to build up treasures in heaven and to build God’s realm on earth. He and his wife became Secular Franciscans. James gave up his old lifestyle and did penance for his sins. He cared for a sick priest, who taught him Latin. Upon the death of his wife, James himself became a priest. His house was transformed into a chapel where small groups of people, many of them fellow Secular Franciscans, came for prayer and support. James focused on caring for the sick and for prisoners of war. He died in 1404 after contracting a disease from one of his patients."

Who is on the archdiocesan commission? Is it the same commission for all groupings? The archdiocesan commission includes: Two non-priest representatives from each of the archdiocese’s six vicariates (12 peo-ple), A representative from the Archdiocese’s Pastoral Council, Two pastor representatives, Priest representatives: Cardinal’s Liaison for Renew My Church, Vicar for Professional and Pastoral Development of Priests, and a Priest Personnel Board repre-sentative, Vicar General and Chief Operating Officer (two people). Each episcopal vicar participates in the review of his respec-tive groupings. It is one archdiocesan commission for all groupings. An important role of the commission is to ensure con-sistency in approach across all groupings.

If a parish closes or merges, what happens to the parish’s money? The assets and liabilities of a parish that closes or merges follow the people to the parish that receives responsibility for the pastoral care of the people.

If Parish A and Parish B merge and become Parish C, the assets and liabilities of Parishes A and B become the assets and liabilities of new Parish C.

If Parish A closes and merges into Parish B, the assets and liabilities of Parish A become part of Parish B

What happens to the pastors and priests if two parishes merge into one parish? It is not predetermined. In some cases, one of the two pastors may be the pastor of the one parish. But in some cases, a priest not currently in one of the parishes will be assigned to be pastor of the one parish.

Peace and goodness,

Rev. Michal Lewon

¿Cuántas parroquias y escuelas van a cerrar?

Paz y bondad,

Rev. Michal Lewon

Spirited Hearts As you learned last week, Spirited Hearts is a ministry for young adults with Autism. We as leaders have learned the unique challenges specific to these individuals. Because of this, we have added two new phases in our ministry. People on the spectrum do not learn the same way as their neurotypical peers. They often experience sensory overload, resulting in emotions such as anxiety and depression. Social skill deficits can make learning and maintaining relationships difficult. Once monthly, we have launched a social skills training group for our members with a counselor here on our campus. We have noted after only 3 sessions this group is blossoming under the guidance of a professional from Guada Psychological Associates. We would like to expand our vision to provide concrete vocational experiences for our young adults. We are reaching out to you, the parishioners of St. Colette and asking for you to open your hearts to help with our new endeavor. 10.5% of those with disabilities are unemployed, which is twice the number of those unemployed without a disability. Of those with Autism only 58% were employed compared to 74% of those with intellectual disabilities, 95% with learning disabilities, and 91% with speech impairment or emotional disturbances being employed in their early 20’s. In total the combined unemployment and underemployment for those young adults with autism is estimated at 90% nationwide. Also, many of these individuals lack social support, a recent study found 1 in 4 young people with Autism are completely isolated – meaning he or she had not seen or spoken with friends in the past year. Unemploy-ment reduces an individual’s self-esteem and financially drains both extended family members and the society. The neurotypical individual acquires social skills and vocational skills without any special training. The ASD individual’s brain is wired differently, and they require a multimodality teaching plan for skills sets. We are looking to find specific experiences to teach them new skills and expectations to promote positive outcomes in the work world. We envision not only finding employment opportunities for part time work but also looking to find complete full-time employment for those who are capable helping them achieve self-sufficiency. Spirited Hearts is asking for St. Colette parishioners to identify job experiences or specific trade skills, technology, arts, etc. that can be taught in unpaid internships to our members. If you know a local business needing some help and possibly willing to partner with us to foster a unique type of adult mentoring program for our uniquely gifted members, please speak to them. Our leaders will meet with managers and teams prior to the internship to provide educational information on Autism and the unique to teach skills. An adult leader will accompany every member in their experience until the company manager is comfortable and the individual is proficient in the position. We will develop a training manual specific to each job description to empower our members for a successful experience. These internships will be at NO cost to the company. In return we ask that the company to consider hiring an individual who meets their expectations, should a position become available. Hiring a person with disabilities has tax benefits for the company. Those with ASD are routine oriented allowing them to do jobs which may be tedious to others. They have a high level of concentration on one or more aspects of a job, making them less distractible. They take less time off of the job. Employment allows a member with a disability to be a productive member of society. Though our altruism in the Catholic church we are evangelizing to those less fortunate; such as immigrants, home-

less, and those financially challenged. Please consider sharing our request to help these young adults with your employer, friend, or neighbor.

Next week we will be in the back of the church to answer any questions.

Thank you and God Bless you. Donna Chmielewski and Linda Kincl

Actualización de la Campaña Católica Anual de Sta. Colette

“Have a big enough heart to love unconditionally, and a broad enough mind to embrace the differences that make

each of us unique.” ― D.B. Harrop

A Prayer For “Renew My Church” Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly, to listen to each other at-tentively, to imagine our future boldly, to discern your di-rection wisely, to persevere in your holy will courageously, to stay together in charity, to surrender our own plans read-ily, to embrace the greater good, to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen Next English language Townhall Meeting will be on April 16th at 7PM. Please be there.

Teacher Feature My name is Mary Vitale and I teach 4th grade at St. Colette School. My husband, Jim and I have 3 children, a dog and we live in Elk Grove Village. I graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elemen-tary Education. I have been teaching at St. Colette School for 11 years. I love the religion component of St. Colette, our community service projects and the kindness and caring of each other that I see in my students. The diversity of our school is amazing and I love learning about my stu-dents’ families and their strong faith in God. I love the feel that our 4th grade class is a family.

Catapult Learning Reading Program This week Ms. Diem-Mai Tu began working on strengthening student reading skills. Ms. Tu will work with most groups 4 days a week for a 40 minute period each time. The groups each have between 3 and 6 stu-dents in them. There is a parent meeting planned this Monday night at 6:30 in the school.

Welcome Mr. Guzzo! Mr. “G” or Mr. Genius as he told the chil-dren to call him began teaching for us on Monday. We are very excited that he has joined our staff. He has 9 years teaching experience and is very excited to be here. Welcome Mr. G!

Spirit Week The Student Council planned an exciting week to celebrate their Easter Spirit. On Monday they started “Penny Wars” from which they will donate the proceeds to Northwest Community Healthcare Behavioral Insti-tute. They had an egg hunt for the younger students and Compliment Day for the rest of the Student Body. On Tuesday they had pajama day and mix-it –up day during which they ate lunch with new people and made new friends. On Wednesday they had career and common interest day.

On Thursday they sponsored Spirit wear day and Won-der Reading Day. The older students read several chap-ters of the book “Wonder” to each class and then led a discussion about what they read. Friday was “Bye, Bye Bullying T-Shirt Day” and another Greeting and Com-pliment Day.
