Over 600 people gathered on April 16, 2010 to celebrate in New York style and support The

Kempe Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect.

This event generated approximately $170,000 in net proceeds. The live auction alone raised $32,500.

Proceeds from Kempe Takes Manhattan event help Kempe continue its clinical services, advocacy, training, education and research to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect.

Kempe Takes Manhattan recreated the iconic excitement and glamour of New York City during a dinner inspired by Big Apple cuisine, a Broadway-themed musical revue, live auction, and Studio 54 discoteque.

Kempe Takes Manhattan also featured a special tribute to the life and work of dedicated Kempe champion, board member, and founder of the Kempe Alliance, Georgia Imhoff.

Together, we will continue to advocate for this issue and support the place that is making the most difference in the fight against child abuse and neglect.

Tribute to Georgia

For those privileged enough to have known her, Georgia was an inspiration and a joy. Her commitment

to the cause of child abuse and neglect encouraged all of us to aspire to do more to end this devastating epidemic. In

recognition of her outstanding efforts on behalf of children, The Kempe Foundation and Imhoff family established the Georgia R.

Imhoff Endowment Fund in 2010.

Georgia led an extremely active life helping countless people through her charitable activities and volunteer efforts. Her main efforts were directed toward The Kempe Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect. Georgia founded The Kempe Foundation Alliance and served as its first president with the intention of engaging more people in the fight to save children who were being abused or neglected. “Preventing child abuse is a passion for me. It’s just a heartfelt passion,” she said in 2002 when she received The Kempe Foundation Community Award.

Georgia and her husband, Walt, have supported Kempe since 1984 as tireless fundraisers and advocates. Georgia and Walt were always a team as they helped abused children everywhere. They led two of Kempe’s capital campaigns helping to raise millions of dollars—most recently a $12.7 million campaign in 2009 and the $4.4 million effort in 1994. The Georgia and Walt Imhoff Pavilion for Children and Families was dedicated at the Marion Street location in 1997, as was Georgia’s Garden, an oasis and play area for children in our programs.

Please consider supporting our Georgia R. Imhoff Endowment Fund, recognizing a true champion for children everywhere. A distribution of the Endowment shall be made periodically, but no less than once a year, at the direction of The Kempe Foundation’s President and CEO, approved by the Board’s Audit and Finance Committee to support the general operations of The Kempe Foundation and The Kempe Center.

The benefits to contributors are many—helping to ensure the future success and viability of The Kempe Foundation, attaching one’s name to meaningful charitable outreach and memorializing Georgia and her passions by helping to ensure that her legacy and love for children endures.

To date, the Georgia Tribute has raised $11,025.

Your Support is Changing Lives

Two Families Overcome Abuse

By Jesse Wolff

Five-year-old Connor rubs his eyes and removes any soap or water that might sting.

His mom, Teresa, fashions a shampoo hairdo for him, rinses it off and reaches for a towel to begin

drying her son off.

As she gently dries off her son, he suddenly asks, "Mom, is it OK that Uncle James touches me here?" Teresa doesn't quite know how to respond. "Show me exactly where he touches you," she says.

The little boy, now squeaky clean and full of innocence, points to his private parts.

Teresa contacted her local pediatrician and without hesitation he recommended she contact The Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect. She did so and within 24 hours she had her first meeting with the professionals at Kempe.

It's no surprise that Teresa's doctor recommended The Kempe Center. Every child seen at The Kempe Center is in the hands of the nation's leading experts on child abuse.

After Connor’s evaluation it was determined that he had in fact been sexually abused. It

was determined that his siblings also had been abused by the same uncle.

Knowing that her sister's children had been in contact with the same uncle,

she advised her to also seek help. Mindy then brought her children

to The Kempe Center and it was determined that they, too, had

been sexually abused.

"This took place during our holiday get-

togethers," Mindy said. "It took place when the kids would go to grandma’s for a sleepover. He truly, truly took advantage of the children."

The perpetrator in this case is now behind bars in a youth correctional facility. Meanwhile, the two families work to rebuild a healthy life for their children.

Mindy and Teresa spend hours on the road bringing the children to The Kempe Center to ensure that the valuable treatment and counseling provided to their children will continue. Mindy adds, "The pain inflicted on my children doesn't go away but it does not have to be something that defines them forever." And that's what makes your ongoing support so important.

We never lose hope that we can help prevent child abuse and help children who need us. Our resolve helps us to do more with less. In this time of shrinking budgets and demand for more services, we simply challenge ourselves to find ways to help more children and families recover from the trauma of abuse and neglect.

Part of enabling Teresa’s and Mindy's families to move forward is sharing their stories in hopes of saving other families from the heartache and devastation caused by child abuse.

When I last saw these two families' children they were having fun on the Kempe Center playground. Never far away, their moms and dads chatted and commented on how high one of their children climbed on the jungle-gym and how well another shot the basketball.

For all of the wonderful therapy, treatment and care we are providing to these children what made me happiest that day was to think about the fact that the children were enjoying being kids again. Your support made this possible!

*Names of the children have been changed to protect their identity.
