Through 2005-
Build a lot of houses
‘…In a lot of different countries…’
‘…Raise a lot of money to do so…’
Habitat’s Simple Message
A hero. Somebody that people
can relate to.
An obstacle. A conflict to overcome.
A resolution. An ending to the story.

Why we need to expand the Habitat Conversation…. ?
• Our solution will not reach all families in need.
• The shelter issue is complex. So our solutions should reflect its complexity.
• Because we can do more. Our brand is a God-given resource to spend in service to our cause.
“Changing systems, policies and attitudes
to achieve decent housing for all.”
One way to expand the conversation
In the U.S. a record 37.5 million households spend more than 30% of their income on housing. 17 million
spend at least 50%!
Why we need to expand the conversation?
We cannot ensure housing for all simply by building more Habitat houses.
Why is Habitat Involved in Advocacy?
Despite being the wealthiest country in the world, nearly one
third of the nation lacks affordable housing.

• 2005- Habitat served 25,000 families
• 2007- Habitat served 49,500 families: more than 2,000 housing solutions provided to families through advocacy
• By 2011, Habitat aims to serve 65,000 families annually

We need to say “yes” to more people in need
How are we delivering the message today
Two of HFHI’s mission principles…• Focus on shelter by building and
renovating simple, decent, affordable houses.
• Advocate to transform the injustice of current systems and make poverty housing unacceptable.

How Should You Advocate?
At the State Level
What a HTF?What a HTF?• Nationally, 95 million people have housing problems
• 17 million spend more than 50% of their income on housing
• 37.5 million spend more than 30% on housing
• In New York, the lack of affordable housing impacts every region of the state
• NYS Habitat affiliates built 106 homes in 2005. These homes addressed the needs of 100 NYS families, but at this rate of building, it will take Habitat 5,536 years to solve the current problem alone.
