How to Search for Words and PhrasesThere are several ways to enter your search terms. The simplest way is toenter a word into the first 'Enter Search Terms' box in the third part of thesearch form.

The system can also search for several words at once or a phrase. If youenter two words with just space between them, this is treated as implyingthe OR operator between words. So the search protein structure is treatedas protein OR structure (see the section on Search Operators forinformation on "or", "and" and other operators).

To search for a phrase, enclose your terms in double quotes. The search"protein structure" will be treated as protein AND structure with no wordsbetween. If you enter one or more words or phrases, you can separate them by commas, where each comma represents the fuzzy OR.

For example myristylation, hepatocyte will search for entries containingmyristylation or hepatocyte andtheir stemmed variations.

Author Name(s)Within the IDEAL database, the format of author names is{firstname} {lastname} , e.g., K. J. JUNG .

Wild Card / Truncation Any character string may be truncated using wildcards, e.g., BIOCHEM*.The characters ? and * can be used as a wild card.

You can use ? to represent individual variable characters within a string,and * to match multiple characters within a string. This allows you to broadena search. Within a character string, ? is used as the wild card for a singlecharacter, e.g., CON?OY . Thus electro* finds articles containing electro,electron, electronic, electromagnetic, etc. You can use * to invoke truncationanywhere within the expression.

Numbers (including decimal points and negatives) can be searched for.

To retrieve alternate spellings or multiple forms of a word, use the wildcards.

Using the Search OperatorsUse search operators / Boolean Logic to refine your search.

The AND operator selects documents that contain all of the search words or phrases.eg. "pharmaceutical companies" AND stock.

The OR operator selects documents that contain at least one of your search words or phrases.eg. electron OR proton

The NOT modifier can be used to exclude information.eg. sex NOT drugs
