the grand opening of

WNET.ORG’s new

studios at Lincoln

Center. The street-

level, glass-walled

production facility and

broadcast studio, located at the corner of

66th Street and Broadway, will be home

to SundayArts, Need to Know and other

productions and events.

Neal Shapiro, President and CEO of

WNET.ORG, spoke with THIRTEEN about

this unique collaboration between two of

the city’s leading cultural institutions.

Need to KNow, our new weekly primetime current

affairs series premiering in May, has its first rehearsal at

the studios this month. But the ultimate goal is to

produce all our shows there, from arts and culture

programs like Reel 13 and SundayArts, to public affairs

programs like Metrofocus. We’ll also tape all of our

membership drives there, as well as local shows and

specials produced by ThiRTEEN and WLiW21.

iT Will GivE US GrEaTEr viSibiliTy and help us

engage with the community in dynamic new ways.

There’s something really wonderful about being at

the crossroads of arts and culture, where hundreds of

thousands of people will see us as they walk by and

millions more will see us on Tv. and the glass design

of the studio is no accident. it allows people on the

street to watch shows being taped and it’s a metaphor

for what public television needs to do. it’s our job to

make sure the community can see what we’re doing

and we can see what the community expects of us.

We want people to see what we do and how we do it.

That’s part of who we are.

ThiRTEEN has enjoyed a successful relationship with

Lincoln Center for many years with productions like

Great Performances and Live From Lincoln Center. What

inspired you to take this partnership to a deeper level?

WE NEEDED MOrE SpaCE for our new productions. Lincoln Center immediately

came to mind because it’s the center of arts and culture and we have a great

relationship with them since we’ve worked together on many productions over the

years. i believe the Mayor said this is the first time two non-profits in the city have

willingly come together. So this is not only an exciting partnership, it’s an historic one.

What are

some of the

programs that will

be produced at

the studios?

What’s the

most exciting

thing about

ThiRTEEN’s new

home at Lincoln

Center?

Bill Moyers Journal: The Final Broadcast

Fri 30th, 9pm

WHEN Bill Moyers JourNal returned to public

television in 2007, Tom Shales of The Washington Post

called the premiere episode, “Buying the War”—

a hard-hitting look at the role of the press in the lead-up

to the invasion of iraq—“one of the most gripping and

important pieces of broadcast journalism” that year.

Each week, the series has explored vital issues affecting

democracy, delivering the high quality public service

journalism that has been the hallmark of Moyers’ work

throughout his nearly four-decade career.

Moyers has decided to focus on other projects, so the

final episode will air april 30. as for future projects, he

says, “Stay tuned!” Learn more at thirteen.org.

Great Performances: hamlet

Wed 28th, 8 p.m.

Shakespeare’s immortal “To be, or not to be” speech

takes on a whole new meaning (and medium) as david

Tennant (Doctor Who) reprises the role of hamlet in this

Great Performances special. The film-style adaptation

of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s acclaimed 2008

stage production also stars Sir Patrick Stewart in his

Olivier award-winning portrayal of Claudius.
