APRIL 2011 PAGE 1 Ha Kesher The Communication Newsletter of Congregation Dor H adash PASSOVER In just a few weeks it will be Rosh Hodesh Nisan, the beginning of the month of Nisan, and it feels that no sooner are the groggers from Purim put away, we are taking out the seder plate. I look towards Pesah because the world news continues to reverberate with liberation movements across the Arab world, with the tragic necessity for the people of Japan to recover and rebuild from the devastating earthquake and tsunami, the terrible murder of almost an entire Israeli Jewish family while they slept, and with the ongoing struggles many of us still face with the economic situation being what it is. One of the names for Passover is chag haherut – the holiday of freedom – and this year I am cognizant of the need so many in our global and local community freed from the challenges of oppression, natural disasters, terrorism, economic uncertainty, loss of hope and the darkness that remains despite the change of our clocks a few weeks ago. In Parashat Bo, from the book of Exodus that contains the telling of the ten plagues and the liberation from Egypt, we find the following passage: “God said to Moses, ‘Hold out your arm toward the sky that there may be darkness upon the land of Egypt, a darkness that can be touched… People could not see one another, and for three days no one could move about; but all the Israelites enjoyed light in their dwellings.’” (Exod. 21-23) In Exodus Rabbah, the Sages comment that “the darkness was as thick as a dinar (an ancient coin), as is it written, vayamesh hoshech, the darkness was really there. It was a darkness so thick it could be felt with one’s hands, so heavy no light would penetrate, and yet, the Israelites were surrounded by light. What do we learn from this teaching? We learn that despite our personal, communal, and global darkness, our community can be surrounded by light when we are together – in mission and in vision for the future. What would it take to experience light as thick as a dinar? By remembering our synagogue community is a place to celebrate, study, pray, play, and wrestle with what it means to be a Jew in America today, what it means to be a human being in the 21st century, and what it means to be a member of a kehillah kedosha a holy congregation. May each of us find our way from avdut to herut from slavery to freedom – and may we all enjoy the light of our Dor H adash dwelling. Grandparents and Holocaust Survivors Visit

Gesher School

Gesher School students were honored to welcome ten Holocaust

survivors from JFS’s Copley Café and four of their own grandparents to our first Grandparents Day at Gesher School on Sunday, March 13th.  The students mingled with the visitors, made Purim masks and cards, heard the story of Purim from Rabbi Yael, and sang Purim songs. We were delighted with the violin talents of third grader, Brianna Ingber.  Many thanks to Teri Wilner for bringing the Copley Café folks for this fun morning of Purim festivities.  We hope to make this an annual event at Gesher School.

AJE’s Yachad Program for 5th and 6th Graders

Fifth and sixth grade students from Sunday Schools across San Diego gathered together at Ohr Shalom on Sunday, March 6th for an annual program called Yachad, which means together.  The students participated in hands-on activities based on the theme o f I s rae l inc lud ing ;  making humus f rom scratch,  Israeli dancing,  Israel  Jeopardy,  singing, and painting  butterflies for the Zikaron V'Tikvah program (students in Shaar haNegev, San Diego's sister city in Israel painted them, too).  Many thanks to Marcia Tatz Wollner and the Agency for Jewish Education for hosting this program each year (along with so many others).

Purim was a Blast at Dor Hadash

From our youngest kiddos to teens, parents, and older adults, there was so much fun, laughter, food, and mingling.   There were new faces and familiar ones, Gesher School havuarh gatherings with teachers, games and crafts organized by the madrichim, face painting by our own Aunt Tilly the Clown (Helene Goodman), and a visit from Lady SynaGAGA herself.

Thank you to everyone who came and those who pitched in behind the scenes. It was truly a FUN evening!

GESHER SCHOOL APRIL MITZVAH PROJECT

Dijana F lorman will be c o o r d i n a t i n g M a r c h ’ s Mitzvah Project which begins March 7 and runs through April 6 collecting books for

The Bookman, “providing books to anyone who wants to read and learn.”

The Bookman, based in San Diego, was founded in 1990 by San Marcos resident, Irwin Herman, is a global charitable organization. The Bookman has been supplying books free to teachers, institutions, and groups that ask. Operated with all volunteer labor, the organization now gives away almost one million new and used books per year, primarily to groups and agencies serving the underprivileged, to teachers, to our military veterans, families, and active-duty troops, and to other charitable groups.

The Bookman has given away more than 8 million books to people in San Diego County and through local charities, to every state and 70 other countries.

Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) celebrates the biblical exodus from Egypt, but its focus on freedom in general has earned it a special place on the Jewish calendar. More Jews participate in a Passover seder than any other Jewish ritual and is one of the most beloved of all Jewish holidays.

The origins of Passover lie in pre-Israelite spring celebrations of the first grain harvest and the births of the first lambs of the season. Within a Jewish context, however, it celebrates God's great redemptive act at the time of the Exodus, leading the Israelites out from slavery in Egypt to freedom. Together with Shavuot (the Festival of Weeks later in the spring) and Sukkot (the Festival of Booths in the fall), Pesach is one of the ancient Israelite pilgrimage festivals, during which adult males journeyed to the Temple in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices and bask in the divine presence. Since the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, the focus of Pesach celebration shifted to the seder that takes place either in the home or in the community.

In anticipation of Pesach, it is traditional to engage in a thorough spring cleaning. Because the Israelites had no time to let their bread rise, Jewish law forbids eating (or even possessing) any food that can contain leaven. Therefore, a major part of the preparations for Pesach consists of removing all traces of leavened foods from the home and replacing them with unleavened foods (though there is also a tradition among some Jews to "sell" their unused leaven products to a non-Jew for the d u r a t i o n o f t h e h o l i d a y ) . W h i l e m a n y Reconstructionist Jews don't follow every tradition, many do. (con’t on page 6)

Building Bridges among Jewish, Christian and Muslim Leaders in East Africa

Our friend, Rabbi Jon Cutler, who is now serving as the Director of Religious Affairs/Force Chaplain for Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) is helping to build bridges and relationships between key religious leaders -- Coptic priests, Imams and even Jews, especially in Ethiopia.  Rabbi Cutler says, "The idea is that if we can support these religious leaders with things that they need for their people we can help stem or even stop violent extremism which has potential to develop in east Africa." (See article in March Ha Kesher)

To help Rabbi Cutler in his peace efforts, Dor Hadash is launching a "Passover children's clothes and sheet drive"  for an orphanage for HIV+ children in Tanga.  We will be collecting new and "gently used" infant, toddler and early adolescent clothes and twin-sized flat sheets and pillow cases. Please bring all items to Dor Hadash, beginning April 15 and ending May 12.

Make this your Passover Mitzvah —  to pass over to needy children in Africa the hope of stability, peace and hope, knowing that others are thinking of them. – Ros Goldstein, Tikkun Olam Chairperson

PASSOVER (con’t from page 5)

The central ritual of Pesach is the seder, a carefully choreographed ritual meal that takes place either in the home or in the community. A number of symbolic foods are laid out on the table, of which the most important are the matzah, the unleavened "bread of affliction," and the shankbone, which commemorates the Pesach (lamb) sacrifice in the Temple. The seder follows a script laid out in the haggadah (literally, "the telling"), a book that tells the story of the redemption from Egypt and thanks God for it. Although the haggadah is a traditional text, many people — particularly in the modern world — add to it and revise it in accord with their theology and understanding of God's redemptive actions in the world.

On the first and last days of Passover, traditional Judaism prohibits working. There are special synagogue services, including special biblical readings, among which one finds Shir ha-Shirim, "The Song of Songs" and Hallel, Psalms of praise and thanksgiving for God's saving acts in history. The last day of Passover is one of the four times a year that the Yizkor service of remembrance is recited.

The overarching theme of Passover is redemption; this is the holiday that celebrates the leading of the Israelites from slavery to freedom. It is a time to celebrate liberation not only for the Jews. but for all humanity. The divine redemption of the Israelites becomes the blueprint for the Jewish understanding of God and divine morality and ethics, which can be seen in Jewish participation at the forefront of movements for social justice.

APRIL COMMUNITY ROUNDTABLE

The 2nd Friday Community Roundtable speaker for April 8th at 7:30pm will be Congregation Dor Hadash member Kenneth Gudel. Kenneth is a senior and part of the first graduating class at Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad.  He is also a member of the Board of Trustees at Dor Hadash.

Last year, inspired by communication with Israeli and Palestinian youth through a class he took in Middle Eastern History and Diplomacy, Kenneth and two of his peers travelled to Israel and Palestine to explore the conflict there through stories and human interaction.  Guided by a celebrated Israeli peacemaker, Kenneth and his friends met with the people of Israel and Palestine:  peacemakers and extremists, soldiers and religious leaders, settlers and refugees. Talking to this diverse group of individuals, they were struck by the power of simple communication and citizen diplomacy. The connections between Israelis and Palestinians they witnessed marked human — if not political — peace.

The three young people from California learned that friendship and dialogue surpass conflict. When they returned home, Kenneth and his classmates founded an organization to share their experiences in Israel and Palestine with the greater San Diegan community.  Their presentation on April 8th at Dor Hadash will speak to the power of communication and tolerance through any number of means. They will share personal experiences, anecdotes, photographs, and stories that they experienced in their travels.

APRIL 2011 • 26 ADAR II - 26 NISAN 5771 VOLUME 27, NO. 8

The board of the Jewish Reconstructionist Federa t ion ( JRF ) and the board o f the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC) have voted overwhelmingly to approve a proposal to create a unified organization that will guide all facets of the Reconstructionist movement. The board of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association (RRA) unanimously endorsed the proposal.

The agreement is subject to the approval of the JRF-affiliated communities who will vote on it at a special meeting of JRF member congregations on April 10, 2011, in Philadelphia. (Affiliated communities will also have the opportunity to vote by proxy.)

The agreement envisions a united board made up of lay leaders and rabbis, a united professional staff and a single chief executive. The organization will be designed to include additional broad participation by lay leaders and rabbis.

Under the agreement, leaders of the RRA and other movement rabbis will serve on the board of the united organization and are expected to be active in all aspects of the new organization. The RRA will remain a separate professional organization, providing job search and placement services, professional counseling and mutual support for the 310 rabbis of the Reconstructionist movement.

The goal of the united organization will be to cultivate, enhance and promote Jewish leadership, learning and living:

Cultivating Reconstructionist leadership includes educating and training rabbis and other Jewish community leaders; fostering effective lay leadership within congregations and among youth; and providing public leadership on issues of importance to the Jewish community, Israel and North American society.

• Enhancing Jewish learning involves developing and disseminating liturgical and educational materials; providing resources and training for teachers in congregational schools; developing outstanding adult education programs; and supporting the growth of Camp JRF and No’ar Hadash, the Reconstructionist program for teens. • Fostering Jewish living means providing

support, consultation and resources to affiliated congregat ions and havurot . The united organization also will join with members of the RRA to develop and sustain Jewish engagement outside of the congregational setting, seeking to reach college-age Jews as well as Jewish seniors and individuals and families who are served by Jewish chaplains. In addition, the Reconstructionist movement will continue to provide opportunities for unaffiliated individuals to connect with Judaism through new online media.

It is expected that by consolidating financial resources the new organization will generate significant savings.

Joining together the resources of RRC and JRF will enable fully-focused planning to address the challenges and opportunities of contemporary Jewish life. The new organization will be unique; its strengths will be greater than the sum of its parts. No other Jewish denomination has this type of united structure envisioned; the Reconstructionist movement is creating a new category of organization designed to respond to the changing Jewish landscape of the 21st century.

good to us, but, rather, that we were good to life. - Jacop P. Rudin
