Without much fanfare, Rice University reported its findings last month and declared that the city of Houston is the

most ethnically diverse city in the United States. As the founder of Yellow Magazine, I could not be more pleased. As

an Asian American living in Houston, I feel energized. After all, the impetus for my launching this publication was

predicated on the very high value I place on the contribution of the Asian American community to the community at

large. We are but one piece in a very diverse ethic puzzle that comprises the Houston community and as is the case

with any puzzle, a complete picture cannot occur unless all the pieces fit together. It is a very wondrous and powerful

dynamic that is set into place when people from such diverse backgrounds and cultures can join in an environment

and share their special attributes in harmony and to the betterment of the entire community.

America itself is one giant experiment in the history of mankind, a living social work in process, evolving with the

times and opting to include people who have originated from every corner of the globe. And Houston is at the forefront

of the national evolution, leading the path forward. It is exciting to witness the economic, business, creative, cultural

and intellectual developments that naturally occur when such waves of ethnic influences meet and come together

in novel ways. To me, Houston defines a fertile environment for opportunities and the endless possibilities that those

create. Yellow Magazine endeavors to be a mirror that captures glimpses of that positive energy and to reflect all the

pride that Houston and its Asian American community deserve.

The color yellow has played a recurrent symbolic role throughoutthe history of Asian culture. It symbolizes the earth that sustainsall life, yet has been embraced by Buddhist monks as an expressionof unchallenged power. Such is the role of yellow: always reveredbut in different ways under different circumstances.

The mission of Yellow Magazine is to introduce our readers to theartistic , fashion, lifestyle and entertainment contributions madeby Asian Americans. It is our hope that the depth and breadth ofthe topics and events we cover do justice to the pride that the coloryellow has represented throughout the millennia. As the editor inchief of Yellow Magazine, my last name is Hoang, which also meansyellow. Just as I am proud of my name, I am proud of my heritage, and proud of Yellow Magazine.

Breaking Ground: Chinese AmericanArchitects in Los Angeles (1945-1980)

L.A. Pioneers

A R C H I T E C T U R E

Breaking Ground: Chinese American Architects in Los Angeles (1945-1980) showcases

the achievements of four pioneering Chinese American architects whose contributions

were critical to the development of Los Angeles’ urban and visual landscape between

1945 and 1980. The exhibit focuses on the lives and work of Eugene Kinn Choy,

Gilbert L. Leong, Helen Liu Fong, and Gin D. Wong, FAIA, four architects who played

pivotal roles in the development of Mid-Century Modern and Googie Architecture

movements, unique to California’s Post-War architectural renaissance.

Breaking Ground is part of Pacific Standard Time, an unprecedentedcollaboration, initiated by The Getty Foundation, that brings together morethan sixty cultural institutions from across Southern California for six monthsbeginning in October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. artscene. Breaking Ground aims to document and showcase the architecturalachievements and contributions of pioneering Chinese American architectsin the development of Los Angeles’ urban and visual landscape between1945 and 1980. The exhibition examines a group of architects who remainlargely absent from most critical treatments of architectural history, but whosedesigns are still gleaming landmarks from the Post-World War II years. Rangingfrom residential to commercial architecture, four individuals ingeniouslyresponded to the demands of the growing population and the functions ofurban, suburban, and highway developments of the modern metropolis.

Gilbert Leong was the first Chinese American to graduate fromUniversity of Southern California’s architecture program. Initially trainedas an artist, Leong invested a significant part of his professional career indeveloping the architectural landscape of Chinatown. Two of his mostnotable projects were the Bank of America building and the Kong ChowFamily Association and Temple. The sheer presence and scale of both ofthese buildings illustrated the permanent establishment of the ChineseAmerican community in Los Angeles. Leong would also later help designearly suburban tract housing throughout Southern California.

Eugene Choy, the first Chinese American to join American Instituteof Architects in California, served a diverse clientele in designing smallresidences to large scale industrial buildings. Despite racial covenantspreventing nonwhites from purchasing homes in Silver Lake, a suburb ofLos Angeles, architect Eugene Choy walked around the neighborhoodasking for permission to design and construct his Modernist home on a50-foot-wide hillside lot. With a clever approach to the site, modernconstruction details, and functional sensibilities, the smartly designedCalifornian home became a feature in national architectural magazines.

Helen Liu Fong, a designer for the commercial architectural firm ofLouis Armet and Eldon Davis, was instrumental in helping to create whatis now known as the Googie Architectural style. The vernacular flair ischaracterized by cantilevered roofs, boomerang angles, colorful synthetics, strategic lighting, playful typography and neon signage. Fong crafted uniqueinteriors for coffee shops, bowling alleys, and other commercial buildings, whose roadside architectural style quickly spread across the rest of thenation.

Gin Wong, an internationally-acclaimed architect, has designed buildingsin the U.S., China, and across the Pacific Rim. He was also instrumentalin the early development of Los Angeles’ built environment. While workingfor Pereira & Luckman Associates in the 1950s, Wong designed CBSTelevision City and was pivotal in the creation of the masterplan for theoriginal Los Angeles International (LAX) Airport. Wong’s creative impulsebrought modern technological innovations and intelligent designs withoutlosing sight of the clients’ more practical requirements. In particular, hiscreation of LAX’s satellite system, which enabled millions of people tomove quickly through a complex system of arrival, departure, and baggageterminals, is now considered as the blueprint for how airports are designedthroughout the world today.

These four Chinese American architects were instrumental in shapingthe commercial and residential growth of Los Angeles in the Post-Waryears. As Los Angeles exponentially grew in size, scale, and prosperity inPost War years, these architects and designers intelligently broke groundeither by responding to the times, pioneering architectural innovations, embracing the creative spirit and/or enabling a community to be woveninto the architectural fabric of Los Angeles.

Wine Basics

W I N E

For the Sommelier In All of Us

Spring is almost upon us and is an ideal time to review“Wine 101”, The Fundamentals of Wine Appreciation.Successful completion of this course will enable you to moreadeptly traverse your way through the wonderful world ofwine.

We preface by noting that wine is, at its essence, a simplesubject (despite the efforts of some to complicate it) and, paradoxically, can only be mastered when you realize that itcan never be mastered. Wine is meant to be enjoyed and itis only through the experiences of tasting it will you realizethat there is something new to be gleaned every day. Thereare a few key technical concepts that will serve as a base fromwhich to expand your future tastings.

Wine is fermented grape juice. Fermentation is thechemical process in which sugar is transformed into alcohol,a process that occurs naturally when grapes are crushed andthe finished product consists of a crucial balance between

the levels of alcohol reached versus the amount of remainingsugar.

In general, there are three classes of wine: fortified, sparkling and table. Fortified wines are wines into whichspirits are added to raise the alcohol level above 14%. Thetwo most prominent categories of fortified wines are Portand Sherry. Sparkling wines are still wines that are fermented

a second time. The second fermentation is induced by addinginto the wine additional amounts of sugar and some typeof fermenting agent (yeast). During the secondaryfermentation, carbon dioxide is released creating the bubbles.

Table wine is the largest and most popular category ofwine and arguably causes the most consternation amongneophyte wine consumers. Simply put, table wines are madeto accompany food and are typically under 15% alcohol. Moresimply put, there are only three major classes of table wine:varietal, generic and proprietary.

Varietal wines take the name of the grape from whichthey are primarily comprised and its mix must contain aminimal amount of that grape. Currently, in California, forwines to take the name of a grape there must be around70% of that grape in its body. Thus, wines labeled such asCabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are varietalwines.

Generic wines do not take the name of a grape varietybut rather are named for the region or appellation in whichthey are produced. The region must have designated physicalboundaries and wine making must be controlled by commonrules and regulations. These wines can be mono-varieties orblends. Well known generic wines include: Chianti, Burgundyand Bordeaux, to list a few.

Proprietary wines are blends that a certain winery registerswith a unique name and that name cannot be used by otherproducers. Perhaps, the best known proprietary label is thegroundbreaking, “Opus One”, a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlotand Cabernet Franc blend resulting from a joint effort bythe companies of Robert Mondovi and Baroness Philippinede Rothschild.

We have reached the end of our review; remember theWines available at Spec's Wines, Spirits, & Finer Foods, variouslocations. Visit specsonline.com for the store nearest you.
