C hesterfield V illage NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS AND VIEWS NEWSLETTER OF THE CHESTERFIELD VILLAGE NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION www.hoachesterfield.com C V APRIL 2012 Pool construction nearly complete by Melissa Wittmer What an exciting year to be on the Board of Directors. Monthly board meetings are now well- attended by residents who come to have a voice in the discussions. One of the most visual (and noisy) improve- ments is occurring at the pool. Last year, the pool was repaint- ed and brand-new tiles were installed. This looked great, but the pool concrete deck was cracking and in need of repair. One of the obvious areas in need of work done was around the edge of the pool where se- vere cracks were allowing pool water to get behind the tiles. The Association contracted with Gary Weaver of All Brite pools and Curtis Triplett of Tri- plett Overlays LLC to repair the pool deck. During this process, all cracked areas of the deck were cut out and filled. Then, the entire surface was ground down and washed to expose the concrete sur- face. Now, the fun stuff begins! Curtis Triplett is experienced in working with concrete and decorate overlays. His company is transforming the pool deck with stamped concrete patterns. The original surface was a textured spray-deck. The new deck sur- face will be long-lasting, crack resistant and slip-resistant. A brick border will be applied around the perimeter of the large pool and baby pool and the interior deck will be stamped with a stone pattern. The end result will be beautiful and will blend in nicely with the existing design of the pool clubhouse. Want to go to the pool this summer? All residents must have an electronic pool pass card when they attend the pool—this pass proves your residency. Contact Bob Sheldon at 887.9311 if you need a pool pass. Pool rules and regulations are posted at the pool and on the association website at www.hoachesterfield.com. The pool should open Friday, May 25 for Memorial Day Weekend.

Pool construction nearly complete by Melissa Wittmer

What an exciting year to be on the Board of Directors. Monthly board meetings are now well-attended by residents who come to have a voice in the discussions. One of the most visual (and noisy) improve-ments is occurring at the pool. Last year, the pool was repaint-ed and brand-new tiles were installed. One of the obvious areas in need of work done was around the edge of the pool where se-vere cracks were allowing pool water to get behind the tiles. Curtis Triplett is experienced in working with concrete and decorate overlays. His company is transforming the pool deck with stamped concrete patterns. This is Home! Twelve years ago my wife and I had met for lunch in a Chesterfield

Village restaurant because it was convenient to the separate meetings

we had that day. With our two children gone from the nest we no

longer needed a five bedroom house on a double lot. Just for fun we

drove through CV and spotted an interesting house under construction.

I went inside first, then called to my wife: “Come inside ... you will

want to see this, but I'm afraid it will cost us!” There were fewer and smaller trees then. We

could see the Palace Theater marquee from our windows. I remember the key meeting when

we voted to buy the development from Barry Cox and everyone present wrote a check then

and there to finalize the deal.

What attracted me then and continues to make me stay here? The covenants are

good and the residential and commercial areas remind me of smaller towns I grew up in and

where I served my first churches. Alan Bates, the architect who designed the commercial

area, was a member of my church. Growing up in an Air Force family and through 45 years

of pastoral ministry, I saw most of the U.S. and some of the world. Retiring after 22 years

as senior pastor of University Heights Baptist Church in Springfield, Nan and I elected to re-

main in Chesterfield Village, a quiet place where we can enjoy coffee on our patio, neighbors

who are friendly and helpful, and where we can walk to a restaurant or theater. After years

of being “on call 24/7,” serving on various boards, and attending endless meetings, retire-

ment offers challenges for my wife as well as me.

As a minister I always believed in community involvement outside the church, so I

have campaigned for school bonds, helped with other non-profits, done programs for art

groups, served on boards for the Museum of Ozarks History and Parents as Teachers, etc.

Even now in my “golden years” I continue to believe we should all volunteer to benefit

our community. In my second year as president of our CV board I continue to be impressed

with those who serve with the welfare of our neighborhood as their motivation. Every month

I witness the energy and concern of these good people, who bring their business experience

and practical knowledge to the table, as we face everything from large pool maintenance

expenses to residents who ignore our covenants and the welfare of our village. The one frus-

tration that every board has faced from day one has been how to rectify the actions of a res-

ident who acts without considering how it will affect neighbors, or fails to pay annual dues,

or neglects to care for their property. We retain legal counsel, file liens and consider filing

suit in small claims court, but try other solutions first. Sometimes we must call the police.

Know that our board works with one goal in mind: to make CV a wonderful place to live for

all residents.

When the pool opens this spring, you will see updates and improvements. The city is

already addressing some tree problems (city right-of-way areas only) and has asked us to

work with them to improve our neighborhood. This week the city is repairing sidewalks

damaged largely by tree roots. We encourage your involvement with the police sponsored

Neighborhood Watch program. If you see any suspicious person or activity call the police:

your input is valuable.

Chesterfield is a village where we can work together to maintain friendliness, pride of

ownership, and a good life. For my wife, Nan, and me Chesterfield Village has become home!

Neighborhood “Clean -up

Day” Scheduled

Chesterfield Village will have a clean-up day on Sunday, May 6. Please show up at the pool clubhouse at 2:00 p.m. to help out. Plans are to do a spring-cleaning in the clubhouse, pick up trash if needed and to fill the pool planters with new plants. This is a great project for

kids to be involved in! Please bring some cleaning supplies, shovels, and gardening gloves. We need your help, so please show up and meet your neigh-bors. Call Melissa Wittmer at 889.9296 if you have any questions.

Neighbors can also post to the site! Like the page to be entered into a drawing for prizes like gift certifi-cates to area restaurants and theaters. The winner of May’s drawing will be posted in the next newslet-ter.

Neighborhood Directory

Residents who are new to the neighborhood should submit their information to Melissa Wittmer so that it can be included in the new directory. Please con-tact Melissa Wittmer at 417.889.9296 or at [email protected] if you have ques-tions. Plans are to publish the directory this summer.

Mailbox need a touch-up? Edd Liniger has already put a fresh coat of paint on all of the light poles and stop signs in the neighbor-hood. He is offering to paint mailboxes too. Please contact him at 887.1375 for information about prices and scheduling.

Egg Hunt was a

Success The Neighborhood Easter Egg Hunt on March 31 was a lot of fun! Seventeen chil-dren and their parents par-ticipated in the annual event at the pool clubhouse/tennis courts. After kids found eggs outside and on the courts, everybody returned to the clubhouse for re-freshments and fun. What a great way to meet new neighbors.

Spring Yard

Sale is Com-

ing up! If you have plans to go anywhere on the morn-ing of April 28, be pre-pared for lots of traffic in the neighborhood. The Spring Yard Sale is a big neighborhood event that is well-

attended. Be careful when driving as many people will be driving and walking in the streets. The sale is scheduled to run from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Ads will run in the Springfield News-Leader and on several online sites, including Craigslist. Good news—the $3 fee to participate in the yard sale has been waived!

Dwane and Lora Turnage Chesterfield Village is about to lose a wonderful family. The Turnages have lived in the neighborhood for nine years and they are moving to Kansas City to pursue a career opportunity. We are all busy people and Dwane and Lora are no exception. Dwane currently works in the mar-keting department of Kansas City Life Insurance and Lora works at Mer-cy as a respiratory therapist. Thankfully, the Turnages cared about this neighborhood enough to take the time to serve on the board—several times! Dwane served one term as Vice-President and Grounds, two terms as

President and grounds, two terms as grounds board member and one term as pool supervisor. Lora served two terms as President of the Board. Dwane and Lora agreed to be interviewed for the newslet-ter and their responses follow:

One of the nice things about Chesterfield is that there have not been substantial changes in the neighbor-hood since we moved in. During our time on the board we did see improvements made to the fence and monuments on Cox road, the pool deck and equipment were refurbished, the tennis courts were resur-faced and the clubhouse interior was freshened. We also won a grant from the city through the "Neighborwoods" program to replant trees along the boulevard that were destroyed in the ice storm. But a delightful thing about the neighborhood is that everyone keeps their properties looking so nice, that I can honestly say the homes look as good today as they did then. We moved to Chesterfield for several reasons. First the location is excellent. It is close to everything. Second, the architecture of the neighborhood appealed to us. So many neighborhoods, even very nice ones, often have a "cookie cutter" look. Chesterfield is full of unique homes that are beautiful. Finally, the amenities of the neighborhood are unmatched. Our Clubhouse, pool and tennis areas along with our com-mon grounds are on par with any top flight neighborhood in the city and we made use of them often. Our neighbors are the thing that we will miss most about living in Chesterfield. We have made some won-derful friends in the neighborhood. It is so nice to take a walk and feel like you live in such a friendly and inviting place. Being close to the Palace and some great eateries is a nice bonus, and nothing can beat the wonderful pool on a hot summer's day. When not working we enjoy our two kids Griffin and Katie who have grown up in Chesterfield. Griffin is currently a freshman at Kickapoo and is on the Varsity tennis team. I enjoy tennis as well. Kate is very active in the arts and is currently in the Troupe at Little Theatre. Lora has been able to participate with Kate as they have been in a production together. We also enjoy volunteering at our church. We are strong proponents of neighborhood involvement. I have said many times that before we served on the board, we owned a home in Chesterfield, and after we served we felt more like a residents of a community. Service is a great way to meet your neighbors and feel connected in a special way to your community. We highly recommend it. If there are things that you don't like or that you would like to see enhanced, there is no better way than to stand up and make it happen.

Just for fun

I think it would be great if everyone in this neighborhood enjoyed the Chesterfield Vil-

lage entertainment as much as I. Why go to the Gillioz? There’s nothing special about

the Palace Theatre. JQH and the Juanita Hammons Hall are places to go with a lot of

people you don’t even know. Why not join the free shows with folks you know - your

friends? All these good people are your neighbors and the entertainment can be found

on nearly every street corner in our lovely neighborhood.

Here is an example of what goes on around you. The story below is about Mr. and Mrs.

Smith. Mrs. Bird (on the left) plays the part of Mrs. Smith in the story. Mr. Bird (on

the right) play the part of Mr. Smith.

Now the story goes like this:

Act 1 - Scene 1:

Mrs. Smith (bird on left) says - “You had better do what I say!”

Mr. Smith (bird on right) says - “Yes ma'am !”

The End!

neighborhood that would potentially be good places to plant new trees. If we want the trees, though, we have to do some work. The NeighborWoods Committee in Chesterfield Village has about three active members and we desperately need more people. Committee members will eventually be trained by the City of Springfield as “Tree keepers.” The committee will also plan and organize neighborhood plantings and mulch days. The City will plant trees that are between 1 and 2 inches in trunk diameter for deciduous trees (about 6 to 16 feet tall) and between 4 to 16 feet in high for evergreen trees. Our goal this year is to plant at least 25 trees. Committee members do not have to plant trees—the City will actually do that for us if needed. We just need to water the trees consistently for 5 years to get them established. Twice a year, the City will pro-vide enough mulch for all of the trees. We (the neighborhood) is responsible for applying the mulch. The proposal process is competitive. The Tree City of USA Citizen’s Advisory Committee members will evaluate all pro-posals, taking into consideration the six requirements of the proposal: Narrative, Planting Plan and Map, Establishment Plan, Tree Permits, Estimated Project Costs Worksheet and Request Form, and Itemized Budget. The proposal deadline is quickly approaching and one of re-quirements is to show adequate neighborhood participation

(Continued on page 7)

It’s been a while since we’ve had any information about the NeighborWoods Program in Chesterfield Village. The good news is that the City recently hired a new coordinator of the program and he has quite a lot of work to do to get the City back on schedule with tree plantings, maintenance and over-seeing NeighborWoods project proposals. I attended a proposal workshop meeting on April 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center. At the meeting, the new coordinator of NeighborWoods, Troy Powell, gave an overview of the program and what neighbor-hoods must do to participate. The program overview described the purpose of the program as a “goal to develop and maintain our community forest. By partnering with the citizens of Spring-field, especially through its neighborhoods, together we can rejuvenate, enhance and sustain this valuable community as-set.” This program is important to Chesterfield Village because the City of Springfield completed a detailed tree inventory this year to identify trees that need to be removed and pruned along city right-of-ways. In addition to finding 55 trees that need to be removed, they also identified 147 locations throughout the

that an individual was removing mail out of mailboxes in an attempt

to steal checks. The thief looked for mailboxes with flags up and re-

moved all mail. Police were contacted and the person was arrested.

Continue to use caution when leaving information in the mailbox.
