EDITOR’S LETTER

I have returned from the City of Angels to the City and Angel (ahem) and what to make of my homecoming? I’ve been away a mere two months and yet new shops, new pop-ups and businesses abound. The rate of gentrification

in the area seems to have reached an all-time high (if that’s possible) and seems testimony enough that London as a whole is a strong contender for the title of most cosmopolitan capital in the world. It never ceases to amaze me, for example, what a wonderfully diverse array of different cuisines are available right on our collective doorstep.

Galvanised by a renewed awareness of the constant reinvention of the local area, we’ve hit the ground running with this, the second of our Spring issues. Our shoot this month takes in the latest fashion trend, for retro-inspired jewellery: we’re especially loving the springtime pastel palette of some of the pieces we’ve selected (P20).

One thing I knew was that if I was going to leave the Old Smoke for two months, I had to bag a celeb interview while I was in La-La Land. To that end, I was lucky enough to meet up with Hollywood hipster and photography superstar Tyler Shields – ‘so hot right now’ in his hometown, Shields is set to go global with his shocking celebrity portraits – and there’s an Islington exhibition in the pipeline, so keep your eyes peeled... (P12).

I’m also pleased to be able to reveal some of the pro make-up tips of the amazing Billie Crago of The Chapel salon (P35) – a surefire short-cut to the salon’s signature ‘natural but flawless’ look.

Meanwhile, Gemma Billington speaks to Julian Hawkins, founder of photography workshop Shadows & Light, about why North London is the perfect place to get snapping (P38), while Anthony Baldacci reviews The Almeida Restaurant and Bar (P45).

The season’s on the turn and the city’s looking better every day. It’s great to be back...Happy Spring!

INTERVIEW

Meet Tyler Shields, the enfant terrible of photography with plans to go global…

Tyler Shields is hot stuff in Hollywood. From an early career in music videos and fi lmmaking, his fascination with the subversive, controversial and downright dangerous eventually found its way into photography; now he’s one of the most sought-after and talked about snappers in the world. From setting actors on fi re to decorating the bold and beautiful of Los

Angeles with guns, fangs and buckets of blood, Shields has not only achieved a media profi le most photographers would die for – he’s attracted a dedicated cult following to boot. Tyler Shields is, it would seem, that rarest of creatures: a credible commercial success, and today his prints sell for up to $20,000 (though they often fetch much more).

Today, A-listers queue up to be immortalised in a Tyler Shields portrait, and his style – which might best be described as Deviant Glamour – has seen Lindsay Lohan pose as a vampire and knife-wielding murderer, Mischa Barton draped in slabs of steak and, more recently, Heather Morris (of television smash hit Glee) sporting a fake black eye. The latter shot kicked up an almighty stink in the press, with some commentators uncomfortable with what they saw as a fl ippant representation of domestic violence. Frequently embattled and always in demand, Shields can be shy of press attention – so we were fortunate to be allowed to interview the man himself at his Los Angeles home.

Your early photographs of young Hollywood stars got you the attention of the wider world and – some would argue – recalibrated the public perception of the stars involved. What do you look for in a subject and what’s your aim with a shoot?I love interesting people. If someone wants to shoot with me they have to come to me and want to be a part of it – I continue working with those I work well with. I don’t reach out, I don’t deal with publicists – that’s too messy for me.

You once drove an actress to a war zone in Mexico in the middle of the night for a spontaneous shoot, but how do you approach the more diligently planned shoots? Do you enjoy prepared projects as much as spontaneous ones? I orchestrate those that are planned – I did a shoot last night where we set an actor on fi re so many times his jacket disintegrated and his hair was all burnt; it’s like being a conductor, there’s a lot going on and it gets very intense. I plan, but nobody else knows what I’m going to do; the actor didn’t know he was going to be lit on fi re

Definitely. I’ve finished six books now – I wrote all six in about five months. It was so fun. For instance, The Outlaw is about how I started in photography. I bought a human heart on the black market, I shot a drug cartel in Mexico. It’s possible that it might be made into a movie in which I play myself. I’ve also just done a pilot for an MTV show documenting elaborate photo shoots.

Tell me about your work in film. Are you still making a movie based on the Charles Manson murders?I’m no longer working on the Charles Manson movie – I got too many death threats! If ever we make it, that movie would be so insane – I was going to make all the actors live together with no cell phones. I was going to play Manson – we did a scene where I learnt how to talk in reverse, to try and get into character. I am currently casting for a trippy movie called Final Girl. It’s a story of revenge.

What’s your take on London? It’s awesome – last time I went I climbed up the gates of Buckingham Palace for a shoot!

until a minute before. Mostly people don’t ask because they know my work. Mischa Barton didn’t know about the meat shoot either. Emma Roberts [niece of Oscar-winning actor Julia] calls me at 2am with an idea and says, “We have to do this!” Which is awesome because I know we can collaborate.

What gave you the courage to pursue photography, bearing in mind that you weren’t formally trained? Do you think a lack of formal training has helped or hindered you?The training thing is interesting to me. It doesn’t give you the freedom to discover your own style – I invented my own way of doing things. People who are trained often think in a very specific way and aren’t willing to do what no one else has done or will do.

Why do you think violence, blood and sex are recurring themes within your work?People [always] ask me this… I find that now girls ask to have their picture taken with guns, they want to be photographed in this way. To me, pictures tell a story; that what these photos are doing. There’s violence and

chaos everywhere in the world… blood is such an alarming thing to people, but at the end of the day every single person is made of it. Everything I do, I do for a reason – if that’s controversial, so be it.

How do you think your photography has developed over time? The more you do something, the better you get at it, obviously. The average person sleeps 181 days out of the year; when you break that down, the average person only works on their craft for a small amount of time… Artists have the ability to spend more time on their art – that’s a luxury. I spent five years working on my art 200 days of the year – I cut out sleeping as much and I don’t drink, smoke or have coffee. The other thing is, I work with a lot of extreme, difficult elements and now I know how to do that – the time of figuring it out is over, so the process moves much more quickly.

You’ve authored two books, The Dirty Side of Glamour and Smartest Man. How did you find that undertaking? Is it important to you to be active in different art forms?

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

BACK TO SCHOOLAlain de Botton’s School of Life is a veritable apothecary of ideas…

The School of Life was founded in 2008, a social enterprise housed within in a small shop on Marchmont Street near Russell Square.

Set up by a group of writers, artists and educators, including essayist and ‘philosopher of everyday life’, Alain de Botton, the School offers a variety of programmes and services

subjects such as ‘How to be a Better Friend’ to ‘How to Face Death.’ There’s even a class on how to be cool…if that’s cool? Better leave your stigma at the door…

SUNDAY SERMONSOnce a month, the School hosts Sunday sermons in Conway Hall as part of a series that invites maverick cultural figures to deliver empassioned persuasive arguments on the values they feel we should live by. Past speakers have included Geoff Dyer on Punctuality, Ruby Wax on Loving Your Ego and Miranda July on Connecting With Strangers.

Head on over to schooloflife.com for up-to-date information on classes and to watch previous sermons.

concerned with how to live wisely and well – it asks us those big, important questions such as why is work often unfulfilling and why are relationships challenging. Addressing issues of stress and self improvement the School also runs psychotherapy and bibliotherapy services – the first institution that offers therapy on the high street.

Not affiliated to any religious, educational, charitable or other organisations, the School is one ‘free from dogma’. Students are introduced to a variety of ideas - from philosophy to literature, psychology to the visual arts – all mind expanding stuff - and are encouraged to meet other curious and open-minded people in an ‘atmosphere of exploration and enjoyment’. Evening and weekend classes, ‘conversation meals’, events and holidays cover

LOCAL PROFILE

HANNAHWARNERJewellery Designer one to watch:

Have you always been interested in jewellery? When did you decide that it would be your career? I have always loved jewellery but it wasn’t until I went travelling that I became interested in the different varieties of styles and materials. I did a foundation degree at Wimbledon Art School where I originally wanted to pursue fine art painting, but after experimenting with jewellery for a couple of weeks, I knew that I wanted to continue learning the trade.

What inspires you? I get inspiration from my surroundings and other cultures; whether it be details found on animal skulls, teeth or bones or bold, linear shapes in surrounding cityscapes. I love contrasting textures/ shapes and through detailed drawings create a range of different designs.

How would you describe your style? Organic, raw, textural and personal to each wearer.

What is the design process; from conception to finished product?I am constantly gathering inspiration for my next collections. My studio walls are covered in developed images from fashion, flowers, tattoo designs and architecture from around the world. I develop photographs, make montages, sketch and experiment with samples in 3D. I work wih metal finishing in silver, gold and black rhodium.

What are some of your favourite pieces from your recent collection? I loved the caged ring and how it wraps up the whole finger with

a secret hinge. The top finger arrow ring is another favourite because it decorates the top part of your finger. I love having as much of the finger covered in metal as possible!

What are your favourites part of London and what influence has the city had on your work?

I love East London, where I live and where my studio is. It has a very creative

feel with many artists, galleries and restaurants. I also love Hampstead Heath where there are such great

views of London, it’s nice to have that open space away from the busy city.

Do you have a favourite jewellery designer? I love Gregg Wolfs designs. He is an American

jeweller who I spent time with in NYC and who helped me out a lot. His pieces are very powerful.

Can you tell us about your collaboration with model and artist Jamie Strachan?

Jamie, myself and Behati Prinsloo are working on a range of leather jackets

incorporating animal skins and a small range of jewellery. This will be being launched

before the summer this year. The jackets are amazing!

Do you have any more fashion collaborations in the pipeline?

I am working with make up artist Holly Silius on a new precious metal nail brand called H&H.

They are inspired by nature and the nails are created in solid metal. They are so nice to wear so watch out for

them! I am also designing a headband and hairslide for new affordable and amazing fashion line THREE FLOOR, which is very exciting.

Helen Baron finds out Billie Crago of The Chapel’s top tips for bridal make-up…

With a wedding looming and so many of the finer details still to sort, I headed down to The Chapel to see if they

could provide the answer to my beauty prayers. I’m already a fully signed-up fan of the hair salon, so was delighted to discover they also offer make-up services. I had a consultation with Billie who is also the salon director. Although I had a bridal session, the tips she shared with me are applicable for any occasion, especially if you’re after a pared-down, more natural look. All products by Becca - beccacosmetics.com/uk/

Here’s Billie’s how-to guide:

PREPPING THE SKINBlur away fine lines and minimise pores using wonder product ‘Line and Pore Corrector’. It lends a soft filter effect to skin in the same way a good camera can. It can be used as an under-eye concealer, locking any products on top of it in place

to aid tissue repair and increase collagen renewal. It’s also my favourite because it increases moisture-holding capacity.

EYE SHADOWIf you are bored of your regular eye shadow then ‘Crème Eye Colour’ is refreshingly modern; like Vaseline with a high pigment. It’s easy to apply - no blending needed - so even those of you that say you’re useless at make-up can get a beautiful, even finish. Another pointer is to dab a little of it on the lips to enhance a pout and give a 60’s feel.

JEWEL DUSTIf applied with a soft brush, ‘Jewel Dust’ is like barely-there fairy dust. Add over the top of the Crème Eye Colour to give the effect of gold leaf. The most versatile of shadows, it doubles as a superb eyeliner, perfect for precision work.thechapel.co.uk/islington ,394-396 St John Street, EC1V 4NJ020 7520 0460

SHADOWSSHADOWSGemma Billington chats with Julian Hawkes, founder of Shadows & Light - the Muswell Hill based photography workshops

When we meet over a coffee, it’s immediately apparent that Julian Hawkins is a man who loves his profession.

Before we’ve even sat down, the photographer is showing me shots of a disused outdoor pool’s refl ection, taken on his iPhone. I confess to being a camera phone obsessive myself, but query whether this new breed of amateur snappers is an irritation to the professionals - he disagrees. Though he acknowledges the ‘secretive’ nature of some photographers when it comes to their trade and skills, Julian’s passion for the subject lies in the opportunity it gives him to work with and teach others.

His obsession started at a young age through his parent’s National Geographic subscription, “I used to look forward to receiving it when I was a kid; the pictures would always take my breath

SHADOWSSHADOWSaway.” After entering the profession through assisting, Julian maintained a successful career in corporate and editorial photography. It is portraiture, however, and interaction with the people involved, that inspires him most. Though it would seem a natural career option, a move into tutoring came about accidentally. “An old colleague of mine who taught at LCC (London College of Communication) called me to say he was resigning.” Julian explains, “It was a part-time, adult course and they didn’t have time to recruit, so needed someone urgently. I didn’t think I could do it, but my former colleague said ‘think about how you used to teach

me and other people when we were your assistants.” Hawkins stayed at the college for three years before setting up Shadows & Light in 2009. “I like to go out and meet people” he says of the business, “it’s the same with the workshops - helping other people to realise their own creative potential.”

Shadows & Light offer a variety of courses from one-day to weekend and even holiday workshops in Andalucía and the Pyrenees. Though photography is an expensive and increasingly diffi cult

career path to follow, its popularity hasn’t declined. In fact, our collective passion for sharing images online has made it all the more accessible. We live in an age where decent digital SLR cameras no longer cost the earth and more specialist areas like large format are much sought after.

With a mixture of retirees and mothers looking for a new part-time venture and students desiring more in-depth, technical training, Shadows & Light caters to groups of beginners and hobbyists as well as those at a more

professional level. Workshops even offer the chance to collaborate with an art director and ‘brief’; taking the course to a level of professionalism not often found in colleges.

London provides a large source of inspiration for the workshops and Muswell Hill is of particular signifi cance to Julian, who has lived in the area for 20 years. “I love it here” he says, “in summer, at nighttime, I can sit in the back garden and not hear any traffi c at all. I can walk to Highgate tube station in 12 minutes and can walk there through the woods - how many places in London can I do that?”

One of Julian’s favourite places in north London, the Phoneix Cinema, will be hosting an exhibition of his and selected student’s work later this year. Whether taking a group to shoot autumn landscapes on Hampstead Heath or to experience the chaos of Semana Santa in Seville, it is Julian’s passion for his students and for nurturing their creativity, that shines through.

As lovers of Southern Indian flavours, few menus have caught the attention of my dinner guest and I as readily as Trishna’s. Our

anticipation increased as we received several strong recommendations from fellow enthusiasts in the days leading up to our visit and learnt that our destination was part of the same family of restaurants as Trishna in Mumbai – a world renowned seafood restaurant. The London branch opened towards the end of 2009 attracting considerable media attention. Stepping out of our cab into Marylebone Village, we were welcomed into a warm and elegant restaurant with two well furnished dining rooms of marble, oak and contemporary brickwork. The atmosphere is refined but relaxed, as is the restaurant’s sommelier who runs the restaurant in partnership with her brother, the head chef. The main dining areas are vibrant, with seating for sixty, and there is also

more intimate private dining for up to twelve downstairs.

Much of Trishna’s menu is drawn from the Ratnigiri region. These authentic dishes are given a contemporary twist and there are also some more familiar sounding dishes that have been given a gourmet treatment. We decided to make the most of the opportunity to sample the exciting options on offer and have the Koliwada tasting menu. Whilst selecting our dishes we enjoyed Indian refl ections of classic cocktails. A Sloane Rum Fashioned (Angostura 1919 premium rum slowly stirred over demerara sugar in angostura bitter, orange bitter oil and a cherry) is a great turn on the ever popular Old Fashioned. In a similar vein, my guest enjoyed a Bloody Indian (tamarind, cumin, black pepper, coriander, tomato juice and a large measure of Ketel One vodka). There are an abundance of interesting and well-selected turns on classics and an excellent selection of Martinis includes a Mango Chutney Martini and a Merlot Martini.

Trishna retains some of the rituals that we most associate with Indian food in England. For instance, we appreciated the discreet delivery of elegantly folded poppadoms to our table, appearing just as promptly as is tradition in your local Indian restaurant, but with accompanying sauces befi tting this high end restaurant such as a shrimp and tomato chutney and a coriander mint sauce.

Our selection from the tasting menu focused on the seafood roots of the restaurant in Mumbai. The Koliwada Shrimp and Lobster with carum seed, garlic and sweet red chilli chutney was a light and beautifully fl avoured dish with which to start our meal and we very much appreciated the accompanying Bandol Rose. The seafood was excellent throughout, however, a soft and tender, spiced lamb chop was also a stand-out dish, marinaded in kashmiri chilli, mustard and ginger.

My sea bream was melt in the mouth – minty and zesty with fresh coriander and lime, in a thick green chilli masala paste. The Kachumber (imagine an Indian take on salsa) provided a fresh and fruity complement. The Dorset brown crab main was perfectly spiced, with the right level of heat, peppery and not too creamy. There was a complete absence of the oiliness and heaviness that one associates with the food of the local curry house, this lightness and subtlety was nowhere better exemplifi ed than in the curried crab.

Huge care and enthusiasm has gone into the wine list and the accompaniments to each course of the tasting menu. The wines are sourced from boutique producers from all over the globe. We fi nished up with a mango rice pudding that was creamy but fruity and sweet with a hint of chilli oil, and a light cardamom cake with a subtle fl avour. We had a fantastic evening at Trishna and can see why the restaurant was full even - Trishna is a restaurant which, like the fl avours of its dishes, has great balance – relaxed yet exciting, innovative but unpretentious.

It was an unseasonably warm evening as my dining accomplice and I ambled along Upper Street to our venue. The Almeida’s menu is described as being a modern take on traditional French cuisine, so it’s at this juncture that I should probably mention, perhaps due to my own callous preconceptions, I’d

had in my head preconceived notions about French restaurants. Specifically, that their staff and regular attendees would look down their nose at me and my common English palette and as such it was with a certain amount of trepidation that I entered the establishment. I couldn’t have been more wrong - the staff were very welcoming and hospitable, leaving my ill-founded national stereotyping in tatters. In addition to the bonhomie of our hosts, the Almeida is situated eponymously on Almeida Street and directly opposite the Almeida Theatre, making it an incredibly convenient spot for those who like to indulge in dinner and a show.

As it was, we didn’t get a chance to view the productions on offer across the street, so we instead turned our attention to the leading man in this ensemble cast: Alan Jones, the head chef, has created a menu full of simple yet refined classics. To set

our appetites racing, champagne and canapés were provided. As a curtain raiser, I plumped for the terrine of foie gras with an apple and walnut salad and toasted figbread, while my friend decided on sautéed mushrooms, served on a toasted brioche with a poached egg. The second act comprised venison à la bourguignonne with gratin dauphinois and one of the specials, an angus beef fillet with cep, smoked bacon, celeriac purée and truffle sauce. The venison held its gamey but not overpowering flavour beautifully in the bourguinonne sauce, and the gratin dauphinois was light but exceptionally satisfying. The angus beef was not to be outshone though and the celeriac purée was so light it was almost hovering. Feeling as though it would be rude to leave before the end, I selected a show-stopping crème brulée and mon ami had an incredibly decadent looking chocolate fondant.

With the breathtaking food, relaxed and mature atmosphere and modern, chic décor, the Almeida Restaurant and Bar really is a place to come for a more urbane evening out, without the pomposity which that implies. All in all, if it weren’t for the fact that I thought I might disturb the other patrons, I would have given a standing ovation and demanded an encore. Fin.

CURTAIN CALL

We chat with Prêt À Vivre founder Joanne Cassabois on her bespoke fabric company and

what makes it stand out from the crowd...

INTERIORS

When did you start the company? I set up in 1996 and have done everything in the company but am now concentrating on the showrooms, working on the ranges, marketing and merchandising.

In a nutshell, how would you describe Prêt À Vivre? We obviously offer a great service in made-to-measure curtains and blinds with a free measuring service plus poles, tracks, cushions, headboards and valances. However, what makes the experience so different from your average curtain shop is the way in which the ranges are presented and the level of help and design advice. When you step inside the showroom, you are not surrounded by pattern books, just walls of curtains and fabrics. The range is wide enough to find something to suit all styles and budgets, but not so great that you are confused and lost. In addition, the range is shown either made-up as a curtain or blind or hanging as a display of fabric so you can see what it looks like on a large scale. Our staff can come up with ideas to customise your curtains or blinds to personalise your window treatment without costing a fortune.

What is a typical day like for you?Hectic! I am usually in one of the showrooms. I love being on the front line - it is the contact with the customers that makes the job so special.

You have three showrooms across London. What do you like about the Islington area?I work across all three showrooms as it is important to understand each client base (which is so different in each area) and what they are looking for. I love

Islington and the fantastic mix of shops, cafés and restaurants.

Do your styles change with seasons? No - our products are not impulse buys but an investment. It is easier and cheaper to change the colour of the walls or cushions and throws than to change your window dressings. This is why so many of our clients choose very neutral colours to blend in with the walls and add accents of colour with borders which are easier to change.

What are some of your most popular designs?Simple, classic elegant cottons, linen mixes and 100% linens. Not forgetting the sumptuous 100% dupion silks.

How do you source your fabrics? We source direct from mills in Europe. We make up everything to see how the fabric behaves and hangs before introducing it into the range. Most of the linen comes from northern France and Belgium which is considered to be much better quality than the linens produced in Eastern Europe.

TRAVEL

RED SKY AT NIGHTThere’s something so intoxicatingly exotic and sensuous about Marrakech. Brimming with history, the old city with its bustling medina conceals a great many chic boutique hotels. A colourful array of traditional Arab souks mix with new wave riads, restaurants and a vibrant nightlife to create a true traveller’s paradise.

WHERE TO STAYStudioHOPSCOTCH’s emerging design team recently introduced the Bab Hotel and ‘Skybab’ rooftop bar, set against the infamous ‘red city’ skyline. Reworking the dark shell of the original Hotel Grand Sud, the team drew inspiration from the light and space revealed when

all the non-structural elements of the old building were removed – the result is an innovative urban hotel in the heart of Marrakech’s ‘new town’ quarter, Gueliz. Demonstrating a mix of English, French and Moroccan infl uences, the Bab Hotel has already positioned itself as the city’s latest destination hotspot, drawing an exciting crowd that blurs the boundaries between bohemian, business-minded and all out rock ‘n’ roll cool.

Ever-changing art exhibitions, rock-archive photography and suspended lights formed from recycled plastics add to the fun of the décor. Local artisans were carefully commissioned from the local souks to create certain decorative elements.

The 45 loft-living inspired monochrome bedrooms are luxuriously spacious and feature white marble

or slate bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Meanwhile, the newly opened basement houses the Carlota Paris Spa with traditional Hammam and massage rooms. The top fl oor holds the amazing

rooftop bar

3. DJEMAA EL-FNAThis is the main open space in Marrakech where you’ll see typical Moroccan fare – snake-charmers, scribes, herbalists and astrologers. In the evenings, the square is enlivened by al fresco eating and a plethora of entertainment, from acrobats to storytellers and magicians.

RESTAURANT & BARThe Hix @ The Albemarle restaurant allows guests to enoy the very finest British cuisine in surroundings dominated by a truly astonishing art collection, including works by Tracey Emin and Michael Landy. The Donovan Bar, meanwhile, is all iconic black and white photographs, wooden floors and stained glass windows.

AFTERNOON TEAThe award-winning English Tea Room is completely charming and the perfect Easter activity. Choose from the Traditional, Champagne or Rosé teas, or feast without guilt on the inspired Detox Tea – handy for those watching their weight or anyone feeling the effects of too many Easter Eggs.

Brown’s Hotel boasts a most esteemed address at the heart of Mayfair, close to both Bond Street and Regent Street as well as to St. James’s and

Green Park. Since opening in 1837, the hotel has played host to many a distinguished guest, including US President Teddy Roosevelt. The hotel embodies a quintessentially British spirit, and is laden with atmosphere – which is probably why literary greats including Agatha Christie and Rudyard Kipling have penned novels within its walls. What better surroundings in which to indulge in that most authentically English of traditions, afternoon tea?

I stayed (and I apologise if I sound smug) in the hotel’s finest suite, the Hellenic, where the décor was less

classical Greek and more modern British (much to my approval). The bed was huge, though it hardly looked it in a bedroom so spacious and with such remarkably high ceilings. In fact, I think

it did elicit a (small) superman leap. Seriously though, the suite was fabulous. A subtle, chic

mix of antique furnishings and contemporary artworks gave it a sophisticated elegance, fresh and contemporary but touched by history. Beautiful coffee table

books, luxurious fabrics and an impressive library

lent a homely air, while the walk-in wardrobe, gigantic

bathroom and incredible in-room breakfast ensured the luxury levels never dipped below mind-blowing. I could have stayed forever.

LOCAL FOCUS

INSPIRATIONSFavourite designer: I’m not sure I have just one- I have a lot of talented friends who make great things - I can’t get enough of Tamara Fogle handbags for instance and Lowie’s Turkish socks, my two current obsessions. In terms of my own style though, I’d say antiques markets and my collection of old books have way more influence on my collections than any current designer.

Piece of jewellery you can’t not live without: My big walnut orbit earrings from our AW08 collection.

Favourite song to dance to: Karl Denver- Wimoweh- it’s just ridiculous.

Favourite film: Too many to pick- I always think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is massively underrated though.

Best bar in your local area: My favourite pub is The Carpenters- its on the same road as our shop which automatically gives it double points.

Favourite gallery: the Tate.

come up with the concept? There wasn’t a concept- I just filled it slowly with things I love. I’ve always had a things for black and white stripes (hence the floor) and also a real love of having things suspended, so very little of the furniture touches the ground. Other than that it was just serendipitous finds and my obsession with antiques markets that gradually filled it up.

What’s your approach to each jewellery collection – how do you stay inspired?I tend to start working with a theme each season- that’s the hardest bit to start. But then once I’ve settled on the idea the collection seems to flow and usually, I have too many ideas.

Often I then hold things back for another season. Finding the initial inspiration is tricky- normally I just

How did the boutique get started? I always enjoyed selling at the market but found that I loved visual merchandising - I looked for a space where I could have a studio as well as a retail environment with more permanent possibilities for displays. I wandered past the street one day and saw the units; I just fell in love and waited about a year for one to become available.

Why did you decide to open your flagship store in East London…I’ve lived in East London for about 13 years and always liked Cheshire Street. When I found the street it was in its infancy and there were only a handful of shops but I had a good feeling about it.

The boutique looks so interesting…the interior seems to be something you’ve really thought about – how did you

brainstorm ideas I’m interested in and go through notebooks where I’ve scribbled things down. How would you describe your own personal style? In a word- eclectic. I have a very mixed wardrobe and will flit between simple modern and ornate antique in the blink of an eye.

What do you love about being based in East London? The people- its generally very friendly and laid back. Yes, there are millions of annoying hipsters, but there are also a lot of incredibly brilliant creative and interesting people who you will have the most interesting conversations with.comfortstation.co.uk22 Cheshire Street E2 6EH020 7033 9099

FELICITY J LORD BEGINS SEARCH FOR FAST TRACK MANAGEMENT TRAINEES

Felicity J Lord has begun the search for its next crop of Fast Track Management Trainees.

The independent estate agent launched the Fast Track Management Programme five years ago as part of a drive to develop its next generation of managers within its fast-growing residential lettings division.

Since then the programme has proved to be a huge success with a number of the fast track trainees going on to secure senior position within the company.

Scheduled to start later this year, successful candidates will spend nine months under the guidance of Kate Hurles, Management Trainer, during which time they progress from Trainee Negotiator to Assistant Branch Manager.

At the end of the scheme, they will be eligible to apply for any Branch Manager positions available within the company’s residential lettings group or help launch and manage new branches that are scheduled to open.

Says Mariella Petralia, Divisional Lettings Director for Felicity J Lord: “Our staff are the lifeblood of our business, which is why we are so keen to invest in the future through initiatives such as our Management Training Programme. It provides young people with a clear career path within the industry as well as the opportunity to progress to senior positions within the business. I would encourage anyone considering a career in the lettings industry to apply.”

We are a group of 6 Leaseholders who have recently bought the freehold of our building. I am now selling my fl at and have been told to extend my lease, which I did not think I needed to do given that we have bought the freehold? I have 78 years left to run on my lease. Can you help?

This is a question that arises very regularly. Once leaseholders collectively buy the freehold interest of their block of fl ats (or building that has been converted into fl ats) they believe that their leases have come to an end or that nothing further needs to be done in respect of their lease because they now own a share of the freehold. This is not the case. When leaseholders collectively acquire the freehold, they buy the freehold subject to the leases of their fl ats. This means that the leases remain after the freehold has been bought. You each own the leasehold interest of your fl ats and you collectively own the freehold interest of the building.

Owing to the fact that you have a “short” lease, the incoming Buyer’s solicitor probably does not wish to rely on the others to grant a lease term extension to the Buyer after the fl at has been bought or it may be a requirement of the Buyer’s Lender that the lease be extended before the Lender is willing to lend to the Buyer etc.

Before the freehold is acquired and generally at the outset of a freehold acquisition, you should agree whether or not it is your intention to extend leases and if so, on what terms. (You may have entered into an agreement in respect of such issues). For example, having just paid to acquire the freehold, you presumably will not wish to charge each other a premium to extend leases to say 999 years and reduce any ground rent to a nominal amount. Whilst there is an assumption that you will grant to yourselves new long leases without payment, please do bear in mind that if there is a time lapse between acquiring the freehold and granting the new leases, there may be disquiet amongst the leaseholders to not agree to charge nil premium when extending the lease.
