From the Superintendent Dear Parents and Residents:

It’s really great to feel and see that spring is right around the corner. While that is always good news, it also means the end of this school year is getting close. I would like to remind everyone that New York State testing for students in grades 3-8 will begin when we return from spring break. Please make every attempt to have your child return to school on April 16th so they can prepare for these important exams.

The Board of Education approved the plan for our three unused Contingency Days. The details are at the end of this letter. Because of the uncertainty of April 5th, the FROGS Assembly has been changed to April 20th at 1:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. The students continue to read and take tests to guarantee I have to keep my date with Ellie the Goat!

March brought an end to months of hard work for two talented groups of students at Lisbon Central. The LCS Drama Club performed to full houses for both of their shows. The talent of everyone involved was evident through the music, dancing, set design, and costumes. The LCS Cheerleaders had an extremely successful season, becoming Grand Champions when they won their final competition at SUNY Potsdam. Congratulations to everyone involved!

school’s website up-to-date and are doing a great job. If you haven’t done so, please check out their work at www.lisboncs.schoolwires.com.

Looking ahead to May, the Board of Education will meet on May 3rd at 7:00 p.m. for a Public Hearing on the 2012-2013 Proposed Budget. National Honor Society is an organization for students who show qualities of leadership, character, service, and scholarship. These students also excel in academics and being a part of this organization gives them the initiative to keep their grades up. Students must keep their grades at a high level and actively participate in National Honor Society run activities in order to remain a part of the organization. Students in this organization are hardworking and determined and also find time to give back to the community that they live in. The way that students give back to the community is through multiple service projects.

National Honor Society has done multiple service projects already this year. Some of these projects include working the blood drive at Lisbon Central that was held in November and bell ringing in December at the Wal-Mart in Potsdam. National Honor Society students also have helped out with the Lights on the River this year by collecting donations and directing traffic. Lisbon’s National Honor Society is planning another blood drive and a Hop-A-Thon for the springtime. The money raised will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Officers for this year pictured left to right are:

Meghan Furgison, Secretary; Kaitlyn Paquin, Public Relations; Sarah Newtown, President; Tai Alberto, Vice President; and Allison Crowley, Treasurer

Problem Gambling and Your Kids

Youth Gambling in St. Lawrence County 25.7% of 6th graders surveyed reported that they had gambled in the past year.

• 1/3 of 8th, 10th, and 11th graders surveyed reported that they had gambled in the past year.

• Playing the lottery was the highest rated gambling past time for 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders with betting on sports second.

Youth Gambling and Problem Gambling in New York State

• 48% of 7-12th graders reported they had gambled in the past year

• 10% of adolescents in NYS (about 140,000) have had problems due to their gambling.

• An additional 10% are at risk for problem gambling.

• 28% of those adolescents who experienced problem gambling in the past year may also be in need of chemical dependence treatment.

• In 2010, state sponsored gambling generated approximately $3.2 billion in revenues for NYS

Parent Attitude toward Gambling

Children and adolescents are more likely to gamble if they witness adults gambling, and especially if the adults show interest and excitement about gambling. On the other hand, children are put in a better position to judge the potential dangers of gambling if they are taught that gambling is an occasional activity meant for entertainment only, not as a way to make money, and that there are certain risks and negative consequences associated with engaging in gambling activities. How do I deal with friends or family who offer lottery tickets to children? It is important not to offer lottery tickets to children and adolescents. Only individuals of legal age are allowed to buy these products. The law restricts minors' access to lotteries because of concern that lottery games act as a gateway to more problematic forms of gambling (e.g., sports betting, VLT games). Adolescents and adults with gambling

problems frequently report being first introduced to gambling through lottery tickets, often bought by family members. Furthermore, lotteries can give children and adolescents a level of excitement similar to that which problem gamblers seek. Discourage friends and family members from giving tickets to underage children. Make them aware that this is not an appropriate activity or present. Things to look for if you are concerned about your teen gambling

• Does your teen often talk about

gambling, or gambling products, or has begun using specialized gambling lingo like "bookies," "chips," and "point spread"?

• Do you find your teen is interested in gambling-related conversations and TV shows?

• Have you noticed changes in your teen's behavior or attitude (e.g. mood swings)?

• Has your teen been experiencing difficulties in school (e.g. loss of interest, grades dropping, and poor work performance)?

• Has he or she had unexplained absences from school?

• Do you suspect your teen has been lying to you about his or her activities?

• Has your teen been asking for more money for lunch and transportation or other personal expenses?

• Is your teen displaying large amounts of money or other material possessions which cannot be accounted for by his or her regular income?

• Have you noticed money or valuable objects missing from your house?

• Is your teen experiencing problems with other family members, or with their friends?

• Is your teen familiar with Internet gambling web sites?

Myths and Reality of Gambling Myth: Teenagers can't develop gambling problems. Fact: Approximately 10% of high school students have a gambling problem, and another 10% are considered at risk for gambling problems. Myth: Lottery tickets are not a major concern with respect to problem gambling. Fact: Lottery products are, by law, restricted to adults because it has been recognized that they may be a gateway to more problematic forms of gambling. Myth: Teens experiencing gambling problems most often come from underprivileged and unsupervised families. Fact: Problem gamblers come from all different backgrounds, cultures, and families. Myth: Drug or alcohol addictions are more severe than gambling addictions. Fact: Gambling addictions are as severe and problematic as substance addictions, and the consequences can be just as devastating for teenagers and their family members.

Myth: Playing card games without money with your children might cause later gambling problems. Fact: Playing card games with children can teach them that this activity is fun without wagering money. However, it is important to discourage playing for money until they have the maturity and cognitive capacity to understand how to set and maintain both time and money limits. Myth: Most gamblers are introduced to gambling by their friends. Fact: Most gamblers are introduced to gambling by a parent or an adult close to them, often as young as 10 or 11 years of age. Myth: Kids playing poker in the home are not at risk of developing gambling problems. Fact: For the vast majority of teens, playing poker will not lead to problem gambling. But for a select few, this activity could very well trigger a gambling problem. Monitor your child's behavior and discourage them from playing for money.

GUIDANCE OFFICE NEWS

Upcoming Guidance Information Meetings for 8th & 11th Grade Students & Parents On Wednesday, April 25th at 6:00 p.m. in the board room, we will be hosting an informational meeting for 8th graders and parents to learn about the transition to high school, graduation requirements and programs offered at Lisbon Central School. On Wednesday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the board room, we will meet with juniors and their parents to present information on the college search and application process, financial aid process, senior course offerings, and more. Please join us with your questions!

FREE $$$$$$$ We still have a number of scholarships coming into the Guidance Office. Students are reminded to check their scholarship mailboxes in the Guidance Office frequently!

Scheduling for 2012-13 Students in grades 8-11 have recently begun the process of selecting potential courses for next year’s schedules. Mrs. Putman

has spoken with students in each grade level to review graduation requirements and consider opportunities for the upcoming year. Many students have already stopped in for further information, and all students and parents are welcome and encouraged to stop in with questions or to make changes to their requests where possible. As usual, schedules will be given to students during late August and changes are possible through the first two weeks of school in September. Supplies lists for grades 5-8 and grades 9-12 will be mailed with schedules in the summer and will be available for review at most local stores.

There are both college and high school course offerings available through distance learning next year. Registration forms

(available in the Guidance Office) are required by June 1st for any student planning to take a college course. The cost of college courses for the 2012-13 school year is expected to remain stable at $567.80 for a 3-credit college course; a letter will be mailed to parents of all juniors with more specifics. Possible college courses include: Approaches to Literature; Expository Writing; Introduction to Government & Politics; Macroeconomics; Introductory Psychology; Introduction to Sociology; Introduction to Criminal Justice; and Criminal Law. High school offerings, which are always free of charge, may include: AP Calculus, AP European or US History, Accounting, various business/ multimedia/ desktop publishing courses, and SAT Prep (Feb.-May, after school from 3-4 p.m., on Tues./Thurs.).

SATs, ACTs, and all that jazz… Most four-year colleges require the results of the SAT or ACT standardized tests for admission decisions. The tests are sometimes required to compete for particular scholarships as well. The tests are generally taken by juniors in the spring of the junior year or seniors in the fall of the senior year. Both tests can be taken multiple times if a student wishes and are given several times per year at OFA or Canton HS on Saturdays. Students must register several weeks in advance. The SAT will be offered twice more this spring on May 5 and June 2, but the registration is must be postmarked over a full month before that! The SAT includes critical reading, math, and writing, and the cost of the SAT is now $49.00. Sample tests and questions are available at the website at: www.collegeboard.com

The ACT also offers an optional writing test, but students may still choose to take the traditional ACT with reading, English, math, and science sections, or can take the four sections plus writing. The ACT will be offered on June 9, but registrations must be postmarked by May 4! The ACT assessment costs $34.00 this year, and the ACT assessment plus writing costs $49.50. If you need further information about the ACT, please refer to the website: www.act.org

There are fee waivers available to cover the test cost if a student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches. For more information about this opportunity, see Mrs. Putman.
