WESTLAKE YACHT CLUBPAGE 2

This is our Opening Day month and I am very excited that our beautiful new front entrance to the club is in use. The phase 1 portion of the project has been completed on budget at around $190,000 including all of the fees, inspections and soft costs. A huge thank you to the construction committee of Larry Lutz, Dave Freeman, Alan Jeffery and Tom Yendes. Also working on this with me is our Vice Commodore Sal Scarpato. We are now planning the most expensive part of the remodel, phase 2. The loan committee headed by Kaj Sorensen is making pro-gress on putting the financing together. So far 12 members of the club have stepped up to help. If you have the financial abil-ity to help us please contact Kaj Sorensen for details on how you can help the club.

Opening Day is coming Saturday, April 14th. All members are invited to come and participate. We need lots of volunteers to make this a wonderful event. Let one of the Commodores know that you can help and we will find something for you to do. The cost to members will be $10 again. This will cover lunch, music and free drinks!

The Friday open houses have been working. So far we have six new members as listed in this month’s membership report. Remember that the 2nd Friday of the month through June the club is open for non-members to come and check us out. Thank you to Pat Adams and the friendship fleet, Jim Harrison and Bob Hanratty for taking prospective members out for boat rides.

Special acknowledgement goes out to Roger and Trudy Weisman. They have donated $5,000 to the building fund.

See you at the club.Brian Rackohn,44th Commodore WYC

The new front entrance is quite a sight. Its fresh nautical style catches the eye of all who pass by. At least six visitors stopped in during the regatta on Sunday, March 4, to find out what is going on and how can they become members. And that is repeated each time the club is open. Imagine how the mem-bership and banquet program could grow when the entire reno-vation is finished.

Sherri Rosenthal, Lynda Brenner, Jane Corwin, Monica Shindler, Peggy Gregg, Alix Schaefer, Sharon Fischer and Donna Landry provided a marvelous array of Mexican special-ties for appetizers on February 17. Thank you all.

Thank you Carol Freeman, Ann Dillon, Jeannie Lutz, Jean Matthews, Katie Stoffer, Donna Landry, Marcy Shew-mon, Andea McCabe, Leslie Calvelli, Dave Freeman and Marty Campbell for the great job you did with the appetizers for Friday, February 24.

Thank you Fran Harrison, Jan Fase, Jeannie Lutz, Lee Sorenson, Lorraine Hanratty, Marilyn Yerkey, Michelle Corey, and Madame Vice Mitty Scarpato for the wonderful appetizers on Friday, March 2.

Forty four members came out for “Dinner and a Movie” night on Monday, March 5, setting a new participation record. Thank you Christina Cartusciello for the movie “Midnight in Paris”. Thanks to the generous donation of food by Tom Yen-des, WYC hosted a special “Dinner and A Movie” on Monday, March 12 featuring the uncut version of Casablanca with Hum-phrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman provided by Melessa Lee.

Thank you Carol Kirschbaum, Karen Jefferson, Arlene Jakes, Carol Schreiber, Stella Campbell, Marilyn Brier, Louise Reis, Hope Olsen, Larry Schalk, Fifi Lippman, An-drea McCabe and Cherolyn Rode for all those delicious appe-tizers for the Friday Open House on March 9

The Club is indebted to Kaj Sorensen and the Westlake Nautical Foundation for the generous donation of new sails and rigging for all 18 of our sabots. Having boats in good repair is key to the success of our training new sailors. As a reminder, registration is open for all eight of our one week summer sailing programs. Now is the time to enroll your children and grand-children. Look in the Telltales or write to Christian Winitzky [email protected] for more information.

An apology to those who did not want to try the Moroccan food at the General Meeting on March 16. After hearing so many complaints about the lack of variety at previous General Meet-ings, I thought it was time for something new. Many members complimented KaranB on the delicious Moroccan dinner. I will try to bring a variety of cuisines to tempt the adventuresome, and will also provide an alternative meal. Would love to hear your thoughts about what you would like served in the future.

KEN BIANCHIRear Commodore

Ahoy, everyone. We started the month of March with the Olympic Gold Regatta. We had blue skies with mild tempera-tures. We always have the three C-18's out sailing, and four C-14's on the water. Sal Scarpato with Stuart Kovalivker as crew got first place for the C-18's. An FYI for sailors; Stuart spends a lot of time prior to the race cleaning the sides and bot-tom of their boat. It must help! Ole Eichhorn with Alexis Eichhorn as crew got first place for the C-14's.

Our Westlake Kayak Fleet joined our day of racing. We had four of their fleet members on the water. Awards were given to Marilyn Brier and Christina Cartusciello. Ole Eichhorn was presented the Olympic Gold Perpetual Trophy. The Duty Offi-cers were there to help with visitors and members.Thank you to Michelle Corey, along with Barry and Jane Corwin. There is always something for them to do. I can always count on Ann Nelson to take care of registration. This time she greeted them at the front of our new entry. Job well done as usual.

One of my jobs for the Regattas is bringing the food for everyone. It is very important to know how many people are attending these events so as not to run out of food. And where would we be without our dedicated hard working Tower Crew. This was their second time manning the Tower. Thank you, Carol and Bob Amenta for getting us through another success-ful Regatta. If you would like to help out in the Tower on one of our events let me know. It's a lot of fun and what a view from the Tower.

Our Westlake High Point Series Regatta was held on Sun-day, March 25th. It was a Sabot sailing event only. Thank you to all the sailors for letting me know ahead of time that you were sailing, It makes it easier for planning the event.

It is Opening Day season and I had the honor of represent-ing the Westlake Yacht Club for several opening day events on March 11th & 12th. If we go to their Opening Day, they will come to ours. A number of people have been to our club or have heard of our club. It was a wonderful experience with so many people dedicated to sailing. I want to thank V/C Paul Artof of Del Rey Yacht Club & 1st Vice President Auxiliary Sue Artof for their kind words and encouragement. They are also long time members of Westlake Yacht Club.

I wish everyone smooth sailing. Hope to see you at our next Regatta.

I know I’ve said this before, but it’s almost time for another fun filled summer at WYC. It’s hard to believe that another year has passed so quickly. The Nautical Fleet calendar is also com-ing together nicely. Thanks to everyone who works with me to make our fleet great!

I told you last month about our beach party on Saturday, August 25th at the Landry’s home. Well, we are going to one end of the earth at that time but on Sunday, June 10th, we’ll be going to the top of the world at the Schreiber’s. We are plan-ning a wine event with details forthcoming. Even if you aren’t into wine I’m sure you will have a great time if you can come. Mark your calendars now.

Karl wants to have a wine tasting also (oh goodie two in one year). If you would be willing to be a host home, please let me know. Our famous dock parties will be a summer event that most of us really enjoy. Dates will be sent out in the near future.

Lastly, the NF will be hosting the club’s annual Cinco de Mayo party – this year we will celebrate on Friday, May 4th – I can hear the mariachi music now!

Almost everyone has paid their dues for NF 2012 member-ship. Thanks everyone for you support. The year is shaping up to be a great gathering of parties.

See you at the club,Jan DeMaio

Blue Water FleetCaptain: Pat Adams

Finally, I have some dates for our events--sort of.We will have had our ”Potluck and Pictures” dinner by the

time you read this issue of The Telltales. Will report about it next month. Our second Annual Brunch at Westlake Yacht Club is scheduled for Saturday, May 19; Venture to Ventura Yacht Club is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, June 16; and our Ad-venture in Avalon is scheduled to leave Long Beach on Sunday, September 9 and return to Long Beach on Wednesday, Septem-ber 12.

Details on all of these events will be available later. The reason that we are only tentatively scheduled at Ventura is be-cause our event there must be approved by their Board of Direc-tors at the next meeting. Since, so far, we have not thrown glasses in their fireplace, damaged the furniture, or danced on the tables, we have not had any difficulty being approved in pre-vious years. But we do have to wait for formal approval.

Other trips are in the works, (such as Del Rey Yacht Club and Santa Barbara Yacht Club), but those dates are not as yet even tentative. Keep reading this column.

Please put all these dates in your calendar, and (again) keep checking this column for further details. Feel free to call or e-mail me if you have questions since I should have further infor-mation before you read this.

Of course, one of the most important Club events is our Opening Day, on Saturday, April 14th. This is such a special time where we show off our club to visiting members from other yacht clubs in Southern California. Be sure to volunteer to help with Club clean up dates when they are announced. Our fleet has always had members willing to work for the good of WYC, and I’m sure we will continue this tradition.

Jerry and I look forward to seeing you at the Club and at our fleet events--especially Opening Day.

Electric Fleet

Captain: Chris ChigaridasTonight was our St. Patrick’s Day party. Debbie and I had a

great time. I hope everybody else did too. Enclosed in the Tell-tales are some pictures of the party. I hope you enjoy them. I want to give a great big thank you to Jeannie and Larry Lutz for all the help in setting up for the party. You’re the best!

This month is our Opening Day and I am excited to see how the other clubs enjoy our newly remodeled clubhouse. What a great job the contractors did. Thanks to the bridge for seeing it to completion.

I’m hoping to have our Spring Brunch on Sunday June 3rd. Are their any fleet members who would like to offer their home for the occasion? We would need to seat about 50 in your back-yard. If I don’t have any takers we will have it at the club. The best phone to reach me at is my home phone which is 805-557-1768.

If anybody has any ideas for a party let me know. Fresh ideas are always welcome. Have a great month and I’ll see you at the club.

Chris Chigaridas

NEEDEDThe club’s kitchen needs your gently used serving trays and

serving pieces.Ours disappear on a regular basis, so if you have kitchen

items you are not using, please consider giving them to the club kitchen.

If you enjoy going to estate and yard sales, consider picking up serving trays, spoons, or forks. We can always use another sharp knife as well.

Call House Captain Melessa Lee, (805) 271-1418 if you have a question or would like me to come by and pick some-thing up.
