Riverford  –  Meat  You  Can  Trust    Wondering  what’s  in  your  sausage  after  the  latest  reports  of  horsemeat  on  supermarket  shelves?  If  you’d  rather  keep  surprises  for  birthdays  then  Riverford  helps  you  know  just  where  you  stand  with  your  food.  The  organic  delivery

company  takes  ethical  business  and  animal  welfare  very  seriously,  both  on  its  own  farms  and  in  working  with  its  partners  –  local  and  national.  No  stone  is  left  unturned  and  all  suppliers  are  checked  regularly  for  quality  and  their  commitment  to  animal  welfare.  Meat  used  in  sausages,  burgers  mince  and  pies  can  be  traced  back  to  the  small  farm  it  came  from,  giving  you  peace  of  mind  and  no  surprises.        Over  the  years,  Riverford  has  been  recognised  for  its  dedication  to  high  animal  welfare  and  business  standards.  In  2011,  it  won  Best  Online  Retailer  at  the  Observer  Ethical  Business  Awards  and  Best  Independent  Retailer  in  the  RSPCA  Good  Business  Awards.  Last  year,  Riverford  was  awarded  the  Good  Chicken,  Good  Egg,  Good  Dairy  and  Good  Pig  titles  at  the  Compassion  in  World  Farming  Awards  and  also  scooped  prizes  for  its  picnic  range  at  the  Soil  Association  Food  Awards.      Beef  and  lamb  comes  from  local  family  farms,  many  of  whom  also  grow  vegetables  for  Riverford’s  vegboxes.        Chickens  at  Andy  Hayllor’s  farm,  next  door  to  Riverford,  are  free  to  roam  in  fields  of  grass,  clover  and  chicory

and  have  a  diet  rich  in  nutrients  but  are  never  fed  growth  promoters,  receive  no  routine  antibiotics  and  have  more  space  per  bird,  inside  and  out,  than  virtually  all  non-‐organic  ‘free  range’  birds.  Most  of  Riverford’s  pigs  come  from  Tom  Browne  of  Smallbrook  Farm  near  Exeter.  Tom  has  an  outdoor  herd  of  100  sows  and  the  pigs  spend  most  of  their  time  chasing  each  other  around  in  the  mud  and  through  the  grass  and  clover.      Guy  Watson,  Riverford  Founder  and  BBC  Farmer  of  the  Year,  said:

“Riverford  has  always  pursued  the  highest  possible  standards  of  ethical  business  and  animal  welfare,  both  on  our  own  farms  and  with  our  network  of  partners.  The  alternative  pursuit  of  cheap  produce  comes  at  a  high  cost  to  the  animal,  environment  and  as  seen  in  the  news  recently,  the  consumer.  Provenance  and  trust  are  greatly  valued  at  Riverford.  We  take  a  long  time  developing  relationships  with  our  producers  -‐  it’s  not  about  ticking  boxes  or  cutting  corners.  Our  customers  can  rest  assured  that  our  products  are  marketed  honestly  and  our  animals  live  a  fairer  and  happier  life  -‐  tasting  all  the  better  for  it.”      Background  information  Riverford  began  in  Devon  in  1987,  delivering  organic  vegetables  to  30  local  homes.  Word  spread,  and  with  it  came  the  challenge  of  how  to  meet  demand  without  compromising  a  commitment  to  local  growing  and  employment,  supporting  local  farmers  and  keeping  a  close  link  between  grower  and  consumer.  The  solution  was  to  team  up  with  sister  farms  who  share  the  same  ethos,  growing  and  delivering  to  their  local  areas.  There  are  now  four  Riverford  sister  farms  in  the  UK:  the  original  Wash  Farm  in  Devon,  growing  and  delivering  to  homes  in  the  South  West  and  South  East;  Sacrewell  Farm  in  Cambridgeshire  covering  East  Anglia  and  the  Midlands;  Home  Farm  in  North  Yorkshire  covering  the  North  and  Upper  Norton  Farm  in  Hampshire  covering  central  Southern  England.  Together,  the  four  sister  farms  deliver  to  around  40,000  homes  in  the  UK  each  week.    The  company  has  won  many  awards  including  Best  Online  Retailer  2010  and  2011,  and  Best  Ethical  Business  2009  in  the  Observer  Ethical  Awards,  Best  Organic  Retailer  2009,  the  Fruit  and  Vegetable  category  in  the  2009  Soil  Association  Awards  plus  Best  Independent  Retailer  in  the  RSPCA  Good  Business  Awards.  Its  restaurant  the  Riverford  Field  Kitchen  won  Best  Ethical  Restaurant  2009  and  2010  in  the  Observer  Food  Monthly  Awards.  Riverford’s  first  book,  the  Riverford  Farm  Cook  Book,  was  published  in  September  2008  by  Fourth  Estate  and  won  Best  First  Book  2009  and  Work  on  British  Food  2009  at  the  Guild  of  Food  Writers  Awards.  This  was  followed  by  a  second  book  in  2011,  Everyday  and  Sunday,  Recipes  from  Riverford  Farm.    In  2010  Riverford  launched  a  “Riverford  Cooks”  campaign  to  inspire  people  to  cook  from  scratch  using  a  vegbox.  Riverford  Cooks  work  up  and  down  the  country  in  their  local  communities  on  activities  from  cooking  lunches  in  people’s  homes  through  to  public  cookery  workshops  and  demos.

Support Your Local TR11 Butchers!

We all flock to the butcher at Christmas because we want the best we can buy for our family. We forget we can buy the best; locally sourced and produced meat, from the local butcher all year round. Visiting a good butcher shouldn’t be a once a year occasion, it should be a once a week routine.According to Editor of the Meat Trades Jour-nal, Ed Bedington, the number of butchers has fallen from approximately 22,000 in the mid-1980s to just 6,553 in 2010.Butchers need your support now more than ever. If the decline continues, the High Street butcher will go the way of the fishmonger—only a handful of shops will remain and the art of butchery will be lost for generations.

Although there are 60,000 pubs still in existence in the UK today, two are closing every day of the week. This is the highest rate of closure since the 1904 Compensation Act saw 10% of pubs forced to close. These pubs rarely reopen as nowadays most are converted to residential or retail use. CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) is working harder than ever to support local pubs through these difficult times. Well-run pubs play an invaluable role at the heart of their local communities, providing a safe, regulated and sociable environment in which people can enjoy a drink responsibly and interact with people from different backgrounds. CAMRA’s own research shows that 84% of people believe that a pub is as essential to community life as a shop or post office. Despite their popularity, pubs are currently under threat as never before. A combination of factors has led to more and more pub owners shutting down pubs and seeking to convert the buildings to other uses.

Despite all the threats to pubs, the good news is that there are numerous now-thriving pubs up and down the country, which would be private houses or heaps of rubble, but for the efforts of local people. What will you do to support your local pubs?

Acupuncture  has  been  used  amongst  the  equine  fraternity  for  some  time  and  is  quite  common,  it  is  less  frequently  used  in  small  animals  though  this  is  starting  to  change  as  more  vets  and  clients  become  aware  of  the  success  it  can  have.  The  most  common  uses  for  acupuncture  in  cats  and  dogs  are:  -‐

• Neck,  back,  hip,  stifle  or  elbow  pain  e.g.  arthritis    • Back  problems    • Urinary  incontinence  in  bitches  and  retention  in  cats  • Lameness  of  unknown  origin.    • Any  chronic  (long-‐standing)  musculoskeletal  problem  • Skin  complaints  (atopy)  • Accelerate  skin  healing  e.g.  with  chronic  lick  granuloma  • Chronic  feline  cystitis    • Feline  constipation    • Feline  over  grooming  (cats  often  over  groom  when  in  pain)

Often  after  treatment  animals  may  exhibit  behavioural  changes,  with  improved  appetite  and  demeanour,  as  well  as  obvious  pain  relief.  Some  pets  are  very  responsive  to  acupuncture  and  will  show  dramatic  improvement  after  one  treatment.  The  vast  majority  however  will  respond  gradually  over  a  period  of  time.  On

average  4-‐6  treatments  are  required.  These  are  given  weekly  initially  with  gradually  increasing  intervals,  until  the  desired  effect  is  achieved.  The  frequency  of  treatments  depends  on  the  individual  animal’s  needs,  but  regular  top-‐ups  are  usually  required  to  maintain  the  therapeutic  effect.  It  is  important  to  note  however  that  some  patients  along  with  some  diseases  will  not  respond  to  acupuncture  treatment.  As  each  treatment  is  specifically  tailored  to  an  individual  through  extensive  history  taking  and  detailed  examination,  the  protocol  used  will  vary  from  animal  to  animal.  Animals  on  the  whole  accept  needling  very  well,  and  in  fact  may  become  very  relaxed.  Occasionally  animals  become  very  tired  or  drowsy  for  up  to  24  hours  after  treatment.  It  is  really  important  to  remember  that  a  Veterinary  Surgeon  (or  a  qualified  veterinary  nurse  under  direct  supervision  of  a  vet)  is  the  only  person  permitted  to  give  acupuncture  treatment  to  an  animal.  Only  a  vet  can  diagnose  an  animals'  condition,  recommend  the  right  course  of  treatment  and  administer  that  treatment.  Vets  who  perform  acupuncture  are  properly  trained  and  usually  members  of  the  Association  of  British  Veterinary  Acupuncture    It  is  good  to  see  that  many  pet  insurance  companies  have  decided  to  cover  acupuncture  treatment  costs  as  part  of  their  policies,  so  please  check  your  pet  policy.    Acupuncture  should  not  be  the  treatment  of  last  resort  but  form  part  of  your  pet’s  treatment  from  the  very  start.  It  is  particularly  successful  in  pain  management  and  in  time  could  reduce  the  amount  you  spend  on  medications  for  your  pet.    I  now  want  to  complete  my  certificate  in  this  discipline  and  to  do  so  I  have  to  complete  40  cases  to  the  invigilating  authority.  To  help  me  do  this  and  to  help  some  lucky  clients,  the  first  30  people  who  book  their  pets  in  for  acupuncture  with  me  will  receive  a  course  of  4  consultations  that  usually  cost  a  total  of  £200  for  only  £50.  To  be  eligible  for  this  offer  I  am  looking  for  cats  and  dogs  that  are  arthritic  or  on  long-‐term  pain  relief  or  older  dogs  suffering  from  stiffness  in  the  joints.  If  you  think  this  might  help

your  pet,  give  me  a  call  at  the  practice  and  take  advantage  of  this  offer  whilst  it  is  still  there.    Rosemullion  Veterinary  Practice  Limited TEL: 01326 313991

Many  of  the  staff  at  the  practice  have  become  quite  excited  in  the  past  few  months  as  I  have  recently  become  one  of  The  Association  of  British  Veterinary  Acupuncture’s

latest  members,  having  completed  an  extensive  and  gruelling  course  on  the  subject.    Obviously  when  you  are  training  to  do  this  discipline  you  can’t  practice  on  the  public’s  pets  so  a  number  of  the  staff’s  pets  and  even  some  of  the  staff  have  undergone  sessions  with  me.  Many  thanks  to  Lulu  the  6  year  old  lurcher  and  Stuart  the  40ish  practice  manager  who  have  both  had  me  sticking  needles  into  them  while  I  was  practicing  and  I  am  still  desperate  to  get  busy  sticking  them  into  Helena  to  help  her  stiff  neck!  There  are  lots  of  people  who  think  that  acupuncture  is  an  amazing  idea  but  almost  as  many  who  think  it  is  just  a  load  of  rubbish.  It  is  important  to  note  that  recently  there  have  been  changes  in  the  NHS  and  they  are  now  encouraging  the  use  of  acupuncture  within  the  framework  of  the  nation’s  health.  Acupuncture  sits  firmly  within  the  area  commonly  known  as  “Complementary  Medicine”  and  this  is  an  important  thing  to  realise.  It  is  there  to  complement  existing  treatments  to  accelerate  recovery.  There  are  two  branches  of  Acupuncture;  they  are  Chinese  and  Western.  Chinese  acupuncture  is  part  of  the  traditional  Chinese  medical  tradition.  It  seeks  to  balance  the  flow  of  energy  through  the  body  harmoniously.  Disease  is  the  result  of  blockages  of  the  circulation  of  energy.  Acupuncture  addresses  these  blocks.  Stimulating  carefully  selected  points  on  any  of  the  body's  energy  meridians  stimulates  energy  flow.  Western  acupuncture  is  all  about  stimulating  the  muscles  and  the  nerves  at  certain  points.  Often  superficial  stimulation  generates  many  responses  within  the  animal's  nervous  and  endocrine  system.  It  can  affect  muscles,  and  the  circulatory,  reproductive,  digestive  and  urinary  systems,  as  well  as  antibody  production  and  hormone  output.  Acupuncture  increases  the  body's  release  of  natural  painkillers  -‐  endorphin  and  serotonin  and  modifies  pain  pathways  in  the  brain  and  spinal  cord.

In  simple  terms  your  spinal  cord  can  be  considered  part  of  the  brain  and  it  connects  the  nerve  endings  to  the  part  of  your  brain  that  controls  healing.  By  stimulating  the  nerves  in  certain  parts  of  the  body  you  can  induce  a  healing  process  naturally.

I  have  been  a  mixed  practice  vet  for  some  time  and  whilst  I  really  enjoy  what  I  do  I  wanted  to  expand  my  skills  and  decided  that  western  acupuncture  was  the  area  I  would  explore  as  it  was  not  an  alternative  to  what  I  do  but  definitely  an  addition  and  another  skill  that  can  potentially  help  poorly  pets.

I  use  high  quality  Japanese  acupuncture  needles  that  are  only  a  hair's  breadth  wide,  and  yet  are  very  strong,  but  flexible.    As  you  can  see  from  the  photograph  they  are  ultra-‐fine  single  use,  sterile  acupuncture  needles    The  first  session  is  about  30  minutes  long  and  includes  a  full  check  up  of  the  animal,  to  make  sure  that  everything  else  is  ok.  The  actual  time  the  acupuncture  treatment  takes  is  about  20  minutes,  it  takes  a  little  time  to  apply

the  needles  and  they  should  be  left  in  place  for  about  10-‐15  minutes.  Generally  the  animal  does  not  need  to  be  sedated  in  any  way  and  can,  depending  on  where  the  needles  have  been  applied,  wander  round  while  the  needles  are  in  place.

Inspire Health Cornwall is a charitable organisation which inspires and enables all adults with additional needs to live a full and active life through dance, physical recreation and general well being. They have recently been celebrating their success in being granted significant funding from both The Big Lottery and Cornwall Community Foundation. Fit2Wiggle is Inspire Health Cornwall's first project, it is a dance fitness programme which incorporates Zumba and popular

dance styles for all adults with additional needs and their support carers, whether their needs involve physical, mental health or learning disabilities each and every participant is not only included but encouraged to enjoy the class to its full potential.

By delivering these sessions at local Community venues Inspire Health Cornwall have opened the programme to all care providers as well as those individuals that are supported privately. Participants that currently use the service are from 5 different care providers and 1 lady who has private care. The service began in April 2012 with 6 participants from 1 service provider, European Lifestyles. There is now a weekly community group of 15 participants, each of them have at least 1 support worker with them. The 1 hour session provides the participants with a fun and interactive

dance fitness class, where it is actively encouraged that the support workers engage in the activity alongside their client. By everyone engaging in the activity together, all participants gain a shared experience and a group connection is achieved with mutual motivation and support. The funding from both the Big Lottery and Cornwall Community Foundation will now provide a service which will cover 4 areas of the county, not only will there be an inclusive community dance fitness class in Penryn, but at least 3 daycare centre's will also have a weekly Fit2Wiggle session with Murdoch and Trevithick in Redruth and the John Daniel Centre in Penzance being the first to benefit from this exciting new programme.

Lead instructor Gill Sadler from Embrace Dance Fitness says; "I am so excited to be part of this incredibly skilled and talented team that ooze positivity and 'can do' attitude! All of the people involved with this organisation including the very special volunteers really make the programme something to be extremely proud of. Every week I am hugely moved by the determination and enthusiasm of all of the participants and their support carers. I am truly inspired by these fantastic people and cannot wait to take this programme into the day care centre's for those that cannot get to our community venues.”

Jeni Hawke who is the Social Care lead for Inspire came to Gill with this client feedback last year, this type of testimonial really highlights the benefits of dance for everyone. As Miss P's support worker settled her into to bed on Tuesday evening, their conversation (normally consisting of yes and no answers) took a very surprising turn. The support worker said to Miss P, "we went to Zumba today, what do we do at Zumba?" Miss P replied "We dance". Miss P suffered a stroke 8 years ago which left her speech limited to yes and no, her level of speech was minimal prior to the stroke. When she first came to Fit2Wiggle

she was clearly frustrated and sometimes aggressive towards the practioners and her care team. One year on with gentle encouragement and a lot of giggles Miss P is known as the pioneer of Fit2Wiggle and a session without her and her cuddly toys is just not the same!

Our quick and easy laser can rid your skin of unsightly thread veins on the face and legs, blood spots, spider naevus, port wine stains and help control rosacea too

Leg Veins Rosacea

Blood Spot Face Veins

Help is at hand at Waterside Skincare! Our quick and simple laser treatment can rid your skin of unsightly and unwanted thread veins on the face and legs, blood spots, spider naevus, port wine

stains and help control rosacea too. We treat many clients who for years have been so self-conscious of their complexion, wearing makeup every day to cover their thread veins or rosacea or not feeling confident wearing shorts and summer clothes that expose their leg thread veins. Our clients are relieved to find a treatment that will work for them after giving up hope of getting rid of their thread veins having tried painful and unsuccessful treatments in the past.

Here’s what some of our clients have said,

Marilyn said “I am at the end of my treatment and can not only feel the difference but also see a difference. My skin feels in better condition and the rosacea is greatly reduced”.

“I always feel comfortable, welcomed and well informed. I found the salon online but after meeting Debbie I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else” Kathryn from Falmouth.

“I feel that I am with an expert, knowledge is key and they have that here. They genuinely want to help you improve your skin. Procedures are a step above the average beauty salon” Heather from Falmouth.

The vascular blood supply is simply treated with the laser light to break down the vessel wall. Although there is temporary bruising while the area heals, the results are quick and permanent. If we are treating rosacea or very fine thread veins there is a slower non-bruising method that can be used, however more treatments are normally required. Warts and verruca’s can also be easily treated with laser instead of using harsh chemicals.

During the treatment you wear protective eyewear and lie back whilst your therapist moves the hand piece over your skin firing the laser light exactly where required. There is a mild stinging sensation, which quickly disperses. Prices start from just £30; an individual costing will be given at your consultation, as we do need to see the size of the area that needs treating. Laser treatment is suitable for both men and women. Why not book in for your Free Consultation to find out whether simple laser treatment would be suitable for you?

Garden TR11cks Apri l – Things to do in your garden

Here are a few important things to do in April to keep you busy in your garden...Weeds  should  be  starting  to  grow  in  earnest  now  so  keep  on  top  of  them  by  hand  weeding  or  hoeing  before  they  swamp  your  treasured  plants.  (If  you  haven’t  already  mulched  your  borders  there’s  just  about  time  to  do  it  &  cut  down  the  weeding).  You  can

start  sowing  seed  of  hardy  annuals  and  certain  vegetables  (check  the  packets  for  details).  Feed  hungry  shrubs,  trees  and  roses  with  a  balanced  fertiliser  or  alternatively  mulch  with  5cm  of  organic  matter.  You  will  be  cutting  the  lawn  regularly  by  now.    You  could  edge  the  lawns  with  a  half  moon  edging  iron  to  stop  grass  creeping  into  the  borders.    April  is  a  good  time  to  feed  or  weedkill  your  lawns.    April  is  also  a  good  time  to  sow  new  lawns.    Make  sure  you  prepare  the  ground  very  well  first.    Divide  perennials  which  have  grown  too  large  or  those  flowering  poorly.  They  transplant  very  easily  at  this  time  of  year.  Cut  back  penstemons  to  the  new  shoots  at  the  base  to  get  a  nice  bushy  plant.
