Guidance Office News Mrs. Putman

Guidance Information Meetings for 8th & 11th Grade Students & Parents On Wednesday, April 24th at 6:00 p.m. in the board room, we will be hosting an informational meeting for 8th graders and parents to learn about the transition to high school, graduation requirements and programs offered at Lisbon Central School. On Wednesday, April 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the board room, we will meet with juniors and their parents to present information on the college search and application process, financial aid process, senior course offerings, and more. Please join us with your questions!

Scheduling Students in grades 8-11 have recently begun the process of selecting potential courses for next year’s schedules. Mrs. Putman has spoken with students in each grade level to review graduation requirements and consider opportunities for the upcoming year. Many students have already stopped in for further information, and all students and parents are welcome and encouraged to stop in with questions or to make changes to their requests where possible. As usual, schedules will be given to students during late August and changes are possible through the first two weeks of school in September. Supplies lists for grades 5-8 and grades 9-12 will be available in the summer and will be available for review at most local stores.

There are both college and high school course offerings available through distance learning next year. Registration forms (available in the Guidance Office in May) are required by June 1st for any student planning to take a college course. The cost of college courses for the 2013-14 school year has not yet been announced by Canton College; a letter will be mailed to parents of all juniors with more specifics. Possible college courses include: Approaches to Literature; Expository Writing; Introduction to Government & Politics; Macroeconomics; Introductory Psychology; Introduction to Sociology; Introduction to Criminal Justice; and Criminal Law. High school offerings, which are always free of charge, may include: AP Calculus, AP European or US History, Accounting, Marketing, various business/ multimedia/ desktop publishing courses, and SAT Prep (Feb.-May, after school from 3-4 p.m., on Tues./Thurs.). SATs, ACTs, and all that jazz… Most four-year colleges require the results of the SAT or ACT standardized tests for admission decisions. The tests are sometimes required to compete for particular scholarships as well. The tests are generally taken by juniors in the spring of the junior year or seniors in the fall of the senior year. Both tests can be taken multiple times if a student wishes and are given several times per year at OFA or Canton HS on Saturdays. Students must register several weeks in advance. The SAT will be offered on May 4 and June 1 this spring, but the registration is due more than a month before the test dates, so keep an eye on the due dates! The SAT includes critical reading, math, and writing sections, and the cost of the SAT is now $50.00. Sample tests and questions are available at the website at: www.collegeboard.com

The ACT also offers an optional writing test, but students may still choose to take the traditional ACT with reading, English, math, and science sections, or can take the four sections plus writing. The ACT will be offered on June 8, but registrations must be postmarked more than a month before that; watch those dates! The ACT assessment costs $35.00 this year, and the ACT assessment plus writing costs $50.50. If you need further information about the ACT, please refer to the website: www.actstudent.org Both the SAT and ACT have fee-waiver programs for qualified students; for example, students receiving free or reduced-priced meals will qualify for a waiver to cover the cost of the SAT or ACT. Please see Mrs. Putman for more details. SAT Test Date: May 4, 2013 Registration must be done online or postmarked by April 5, 2013 SAT Test Date: June 1, 2013 Registration must be done online or postmarked by May 2, 2013 ACT Test Date: June 8, 2013 Registration must be done online or postmarked by May 3, 2013

Summer School 2013 Students needing to attend summer school will be notified by mail a few days after school ends. Regional summer school for grades 7-12 is available at Ogdensburg Free Academy. Summer school traditionally runs from early July through mid-August. Attendance is crucial for success in summer school. Parents are responsible for transporting their child(ren) to and from summer school, but there is no cost to the family for the classes. Further information will be available for pick up in the Guidance Office in early-to mid-June. Registration is available by calling Lisbon Central School and speaking with Mrs. Barney or Mrs. Putman in the Guidance Office.

Adolescent Gambling: Parents are the Best Prevention Your children are probably doing what they usually do when they’re with friends… hanging out, playing music, playing sports and having fun. But what are the odds that they are taking risks you never worried about, like gambling?

Youth today are bombarded with images and messages that depict gambling as exciting and glamorous. This generation is overwhelmingly exposed to messages about the benefits of gambling and the belief that they can make a lot of money in a short time. It’s up to you to send a balanced message about the realities of gambling and the potential consequences.

Research shows that parents CAN make a difference in how their children respond to risky activities such as gambling. The best ways to guide your children from developing a gambling problem are:

Start early – talk with your kids now about gambling and other risky behaviors.

Listen – let them know that they can come to you and you will listen.

Educate yourself and your kids. Know what behavior is normal. Establish family rules and

enforce them. Monitor your children’s

activities, know where they are and with whom.

Be involved.

Help your child develop coping skills.

Be a good role model; demonstrate the behavior that you want your children to learn.

Talk to your kids about gambling. They know more than you think! If you need more information or help please contact the Seaway Valley Prevention Council at 713-4861, www. seawayvalleypreventioncouncil.net/problem_gambling or the New York State HOPEline at 1-877-8-HOPENY. You can also visit us on Facebook at St. Lawrence County Problem Gambling Prevention or twitter at GamblingEd.

First in Math Program Mr. Woodside

Our school is presently participating in a grade 1-6 pilot program for First in Math. Homeroom teachers have their own assigned passwords, as well as their students, for entrance into the program. These students will not only be able to play math games and take tests at school, but if they have internet access at home, be able to participate there as well. For parents of children that are outside of this pilot series, that wish to learn more, they may go to www.explorefirstinmath.com
