STEWARDSHIP
Jesus wants us to live abundantly. And as believers he also wants us to live fruitfully,
meaning he wants to produce fruit, “kingdom fruit!” Our Savior’s stewardship team is
just now beginning to put together a ministry that will encourage Fruitful Living for
our members. By next fall we will develop a process that will allow members to ac-
quaint themselves with opportunities here for investment of gifts and talents. For next
fall or spring we are working to put funding in place that will allow us to offer Dave
Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, a Christian ministry that teaches biblical princi-
ples of financial management that is centered on paying off debts, remaining debt free
and then living in such a way that money is a “faith tool” rather than an overlord. This
month we will be encouraging our members to make a pledge to support the work and ministries of our congrega-
tion. We look forward to sharing Fruitful Living news with you as we plan and implement what we believe will
be an important and vital ministry in the life of Our Savior’s.

NARTHEX REMODELING PROJECT
As you all know the narthex is in need of a facelift. This remodel would
make our narthex an inviting and eye-pleasing space, while creating a
good first impression to our visitors and our members. This plan calls
for new carpet and tile squares for the floor, the walls would get a new
color and design. We also would be adding loveseats and tables along
the windows to create a place for conversation and bible studies, to foster
relationship building. The coffee service area would be updated with
new cabinets, as well as new cabinets for an information area. The
Building and Grounds team has been chatting about this for some time.
What has gotten this Project rolling was the Spring Musical Committee
offering the spring plant sales profits to this wonderful idea! That money
alone will not fund the entire project and it will require us to launch a
fundraising campaign, we’re calling, Show You Care, Buy a Square!
At worship in April you will be hearing more about this wonderful opportunity to improve the look of our
church! We’re asking for contributions of $50 per square. That would be for a square foot of carpet, tile, paint or
wood for the cabinets. It is possible to see a new narthex by Rally Day this September 2013, if each family
would give just $50. Look for a pledge form online or stop by the office. If you have questions contact one of the
Narthex Project Team members:

WHAT IS EARTH DAY?
Earth Day (www.earthday.org) is observed on April
22 and was started in the United States in 1970 by
Senator Gaylord Nelson to create awareness for the
Earth's environment and to encourage conservation
efforts. In 1990, Earth Day was taken international,
and today, more than 500 million people in 175
countries observe Earth Day! There are numerous
events to participate in locally to show your support
for the earth on the weekend prior to Earth Day.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
July 29-August 2
For 3 year olds – 5th graders
At this exciting global fair your
children will experience the love
of Jesus, meet welcoming
neighbors from the Bible,
and explore the everyday life
of neighbors from Japan,
Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom, Australia and
Mexico. Kids will learn that God’s love welcomes
everyone, as they understand how to love and serve
God and be a neighbor to the world. Registration
forms are available now in the church office.
SPRING MUSICAL
“Malice in the Palace, the
Story of Esther”, a Christian
musical presented by Our
Savior’s K-12th graders will
be performed at Our Sav-
ior’s on Saturday, May 4 at
7:00 pm and during regular
worship services on Sunday
May 5.
The story of Esther has all
the ingredients for a great
Hollywood thriller; a beauti-
ful and spirited heroine, a dark-hearted villain, a twist-
ing plot full of danger and intrigue, and a cliffhanger of
a climax. And in the midst of this excitement we find a
powerful message the smallest person acting bravely
can make an enormous difference, for God has placed
us where we are for a reason.
We hope you can join us for the last musical perfor-
mance of a 23 year run for directors Joy Rauner and
Jeanne Zaske.

As for Pastors Amanda and Horacio, both of them will
work with the Saint Paul Area Synod candidacy com-
mittee as they move through the process. Amanda is a
native of Northfield, MN, and was originally approved
as an ELCA candidate, so the process will be relatively
simple for her, and Horacio will likely need to do some
coursework at Luther Seminary and receive additional
training before he would able to serve in an ELCA
congregation. They plan to move to Minnesota this
spring to begin this work.
We ask for your patience and your continued prayers
as we move together into the future, prayers that the
God who brought us together in this life-giving
relationship will continue to bless, strengthen, and
guide us all into the future. Regular updates on the
transition process will be posted on the Saint Paul Area
Synod website (http://www.spas-elca.org/mission/
global-relationships/guatemala#Transitions), and addi-
tional questions can be directed to Janet Metcalfe, chair
of the SPAS Guatemala Companion Synod Task Force

GUATEMALA UPDATE
Those of you who are familiar with the synod’s
companion relationship with the Augustinian
Lutheran Church of Guatemala (ILAG) have come to
know Pastor Amanda Olson de Castillo and her
husband Pastor Horacio Castillo. They have served
as the primary contacts for us, coordinating
delegation visits, facilitating communication between
our churches, and giving oversight to the financial
contributions we have sent. In late January, Pastors
Amanda and Horacio announced their decision to
move from Guatemala to the United States, where
they will seek to serve as pastors in the ELCA.
The factors that led to this decision are many and
complex, and we pray that God will continue to walk
with all who have so greatly benefited from their
work and who are impacted by this decision.
The leadership of both of the ILAG’s companion
synods, the Southeastern Synod and the Saint Paul
Area Synod, have been in conversation with Global
Mission personnel and the leadership of the ILAG as
we begin to plan for this transition. Most of the
decisions about how the ILAG will now handle the
many dimensions of the companion relationships will
be made by Bishop Castillo and the rest of the ILAG
leadership. Our role as companions will be to
accompany, support, and provide assistance when
requested. Bishops Rogness (SPAS), Gordy (SES),
and Castillo (ILAG) will participate in a conference
call in the coming weeks to discuss how we can
continue to walk together.

30 HOUR FAMINE
April 19 8:00 AM-April 20 2:00 PM
Think you can go a whole day without eating any
food? What if I told you that it is not only possible,
but that you could also raise money to support children
who are not getting enough food on a regular basis
while you do it. The 30 hour famine is a middle school
and high school event designed for youth to raise
money to help support hungry children across the
world while having fun and spending time with one
another. Every $30 we raise is enough money to feed
one child for a whole month! Youth can sign up and
pick up fundraising packets outside of Nick and
Charisse’s office. We also have a website that people
can donate electronically: go to 30hourfamine.org/
donate and search for Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
On Friday, April 19th we will start our famine
at 8:00 AM as the students are going to school that
day. At 4:00 PM students will arrive at Our Savior’s
with the money they have raised and we will spend the
night at the church and break our fast at 2:00 PM Sat-
urday afternoon. During our time together we will be
learning more about and getting a firsthand glimpse of
some struggles and dangers people have to deal with
everyday through a series of games called TRIBE:
REFUGEE. TRIBE is a survivor type game where
teams will compete in games which focus on various
refugee survival skills. If you have any questions about
the 30 hour famine please contact Nick Gilbert:

ROBERTA DALE RETIRES!
In 1988, Democratic presidential candidate Michael
Dukakis made the mistake of posing in a tank and
Republican vice-presidential nominee Dan Quayle
learned he was no Jack Kennedy. In 1988, CDs
outsold vinyl LPs for the first time and a NASA
scientist first warned congress about global warming
and the effects of greenhouse gases. In 1988 Roy
Orbison died and Rihanna was born. In 1988 Roberta
Dale joined the staff of Our Savior’s. Twenty-Five
years later, in 2013, Berta will be retiring.
In September of 2012, Berta’s husband, Pastor Luther
Dale, scaled back to semi-retirement at Incarnation
Lutheran Church. Berta, our Director of Children’s
Ministries, was hoping to retire at the same time, but
agreed to stay on till the end of the calendar year.
When we learned of Pastor Karn’s call to a church in
Phoenix, Berta volunteered to stay on through May of
2013. We did our best to convince her to remain
through May of 2023, but, alas, her grandkids and
traveling won out. We are not letting Berta go,
however, without a party to celebrate her Twenty-Five
wonderful years with us. So if you have competing
plans for the morning of Sunday, April 28. Please
cancel them, and join us as we take send Berta off in
style and bid her the Godspeed she so richly deserves.
There will be more details to come in By the Ways and
Facebook postings, but go ahead right now and mark
your calendars for Roberta Dale Day, the morning
of Sunday, April 28!
