On either side of the river is the tree of lifewith its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its

fruit each month; and the leaves of the treeare for the healing of the nationsRevela-

    tion 22:2b

Daffodils and forsythia are blooming and the promise of spring

is in the air. Soon we will be buying seeds and visiting nurseries, get-

ting the lawn and garden ready for new growth. Just as we ready the

ground, we must nurture our spirits to produce good fruit. Water, fer-

tilizer, sunshinethese are needed for healthy plant life. Prayer, wor-

ship, Bible studythese are needed for healthy spiritual life.

The basics are what enable plants and people to bear good fruit.

When we spend time with God its easier to be Christ to others, espe-

cially the people who get on our nerves. When we worship -- praying,

singing, and breaking bread together -- we are the community of

Christ. When we study Jesus life and teachings in the Bible we know

that were called to follow in his footsteps by bringing food for the

Eureka Food Pantry, feeding the hungry at TrinityCentral West End,

and collecting used shoes to turn them into water wells in Africa.

On Saturday, April 13 we have an opportunity to nurture our

spiritual life at a day-long retreat led by Kristie Lenzen. We will meetin a beautiful setting overlooking the Missouri River. We will delight

in nature, the Divine, and one another. My hope for all of us is that

throughout the year we regularly make time to renew our spirits. This

joyous Eastertide is a perfect season to till the gardens of our souls, re-

freshing ourselves to bear good fruit.

    Smile.

A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The

attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him to-

ward a vacant pump. Reverend, said the young man, Im so sorry about the delay. It seems as if every-

one waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip. The minister chuckled, I know what you mean.

Its the same in my business.

    St. Francis Garden

Weve waited all the weary winter long

(and it was long!) but now its spring, and the St.

Francis gardeners are getting active. Weve re-

freshed the beds and planted our beautiful signs.

Were currently plotting our beds using a great

free website to choose the best crops for our time

and space. Well soon have a workday for seed-

ing and planting our delectable crops.Last summer, despite fierce heat and a

devastating drought, we grew enough delicious

vegetables to offer healthy food to ourselves and

to the Eureka Food Pantry. Were hopeful that

this year, with even better planning and maybe

better luck with the weather, well have more of

    Gods bounty to share.

    Saturday for Your Soul.

Saturday, April 13th, has been set aside for our spiritual retreat, led by Kristie Lenzen. Kristie is

well known in our parish and throughout the Christian community as a leader of peaceful yet gently pro-

vocative retreats. This is a great time to let your soul look around and see where you are on the journey to

connection with God. Kristie will provide suggestions and motivation, but theres plenty of time for indi-

vidual thinking, reflecting, meditation or just breathing.

The retreat can only be enhanced by its setting in an eight-acre property near Washington, Missouri. Here

are the logistics youll need to know:

    Confirmation/Reception/Reaffirmation

    June 23

Bishop G. Wayne Smith will worship with us

at St. Francis on Sunday, June 23. This is a time for

the Bishop to confirm people in the Episcopal faith.

If you have been baptized but not confirmed, heres

    your opportunity.

During May and June well be offering a

    multi-part series during Adult Forum -- 11:40 a.m. to

12:15 p.m. on Sundays -- entitled, What is an Epis-

copalian? This series of talks will serve as confir-

mation classes. (Even if youre a lifelong Episcopa-

lian, youll find the Adult Forum series interesting.)

If you have been confirmed in another faith

tradition, such as Roman Catholicism, you can bereceived in the Episcopal Church by the Bishop on

June 23. Or, if you were confirmed as an Episcopa-

lian a long time ago, you can reaffirm your vows on

    June 23.

Confirmation is an adult affirmation of the

promises made for you (or by you) at your baptism.

Please consider being confirmed, received, or reaf-

firmed. Talk to Pastor Sally if youre interested.

Invitational MinistryAs soon as the weather holds well resume

going door-to-door, inviting people to join us for

worship at St. Francis. If youd like to be a part of

this invitational ministry, please talk to Pastor Sally.

We have a goal of ringing the doorbells of 500

households this year. Were having a good time get-

    ting to know our neighbors.

    Canterbury Bookstore April 28

The Canterbury Bookstore, housed at St. Mi-

chael and St. George Episcopal Church in Clayton, is

coming to St. Francis on Sunday, April 28. The

Bookstore will have items for sale following worship

and after Adult Forum. Theyve promised to stay as

long as there are shoppers. Youll want to check out

the various items they have to offer, from books to

    hand-held labyrinths.

    Coffees at the Parish

    House

A total of 25 St. Francis

    parishioners came to the parish

    house on three Wednesdays in

    Lent for coffee and conversation

with Pastor Sally. The final cof- fee is

scheduled for Wednesday, April 17 from 7-8:30 p.m.

at the parish house (210 S. Central). If youre inter-

ested in attending, please let Pastor Sally know. All

    are welcome.

Thank You to Tim Phillips of Assured Automotive

Recently St. Francis received a very generous donation

from Tim Phillips, the owner of Assured Automotive. Tim Phillips

has regularly given money to the ministers of churches in Eureka,

asking that the money be used to help those in need.

If your car needs maintenance or repair, please consider us-

ing Assured Automotive at 19 W. 5th St. in Eureka. Tim asks for

nothing in return for his generosity, but such selfless giving de-

    serves our support.

    Yummmm! Howd You Make That?

This is a call to action for anyone who brought a dish to the Heritage Dinner party at Joe and

Donna Bernerts house last month. People brought favorite dishes that reflected their ethnic heritage

(ask either Sally Hader or Sally Weaver) or reflected the cuisine of a favorite location (ask Sue Schmidt

or see my pseudo-recipe below). Those who attended the dinner loved the different dishes so much that(1) we didnt stop eating long enough to play games as planned and (2) weve been begging for one an-

others recipes. So.if you brought something to the Heritage Dinner, entre, salad, side or sweet, send

the recipe to Maxine or to Kathleen so we can collect and publish. Thank you!

Kathleen McDonalds Expandable Pseudo-Recipe for Clam Chowder:

Brown together chopped shallots and some kind of diced ham or bacon, like

pancetta. Make sure shallots get soft. Place these in your crock pot.

Add cans of soup to make the quantity you need*, stirring together. Add a

can of clams and their juices. Add milk and cream until the texture and

thickness seem right. Heat in crock pot until ready to serve. Add a little cracked pepper (no needfor salt here!) and some pretty chives or parsley on top as you serve.

    * Use mostly cans of New England Clam Chowder, but also add one of the following: Cream of

    Potato or Cream of Celery.

    Youth Group Happenings

April 26 - Teen Trivia Night

If youre a teenager, youll want to attend thetrivia night on Friday, April 26 from 6-10 p.m. at St.

Martins Episcopal Church Ellisville. Teens are

encouraged to bring friends and come enjoy a night

of working their brains while socializing. Bring

snacks and table decorations; prizes are awarded for

the best. Theres a $5 per person fee.

This trivia night is an activity of IV Youth,

which is a collaboration of Episcopal Churches in

this area sponsoring events for our Youth Groups.May 25 - SkyZone

The teens are gathering at SkyZone in Ches-

terfield on Saturday, May 25 as a send-off to Sarah

and Alex Branchfield. Were going to miss the

Branchfields, who are moving to Tennessee this

summer. This is our opportunity to have fun to-

gether with Sarah and Alex before they go.

    Bowling

Watch for information about a St. Francis-wide bowling event put on by the Youth Group.

This evening of fun will involve crazy bowling,

such as bowling while standing with your back to the

lane, bowling while standing on one leg, etc. You

    wont want to miss this.

    The Magic House

The Youth Group wants to be with our St.

Francis younger children at the Magic House this

summer. If youre a parent of a young child, pleaselet one of our teenagers or Pastor Sally know what a

good day and time would be for us to visit the Magic

House together. Were in the process of making

    plans.

    Youth-Led Worship, Sunday, April 14th

Sunday, April 14th will be a great day to

bring family and friends to worship with us at theMasonic Lodge at 10:00 a.m. Our Youth Group

and Sunday school class will provide capable,

loving and creative leadership at the Sunday

Eucharist. Members of the Youth Group will pro-

vide not only lectors and acolytes, but will plan

for and play several musical offerings as well.

The Sunday school class has written the Prayers

of the People and will also perform a dramatic re-

telling of the Gospel as their version of the ser-

mon.We all know how creative and talented

our kids are. Lets let them lead us in worship.

Its bound to be something wonderful to share.

    JUST READ THE LABEL

I served my country but I did not wear the uniform,

and voluntarily served three years, not the required two.

I was more idealistic then; now that Im closer to the grave

and looking backward, have more doubts about not fighting

in a war; retaliation to aggressors seems the proper human

response, though it may be at best short-term recourse.

The difficult lies in that it goes against the major teaching

of the Christian faith, the faith Americans espouse the most

they say. But if we look at that faith closer up, we see it says

we are to turn the other cheek, to not retaliate, to really love

our enemies; if true, we must assume that war is wrong. To die oneself rather than take anothers life appears to be

the better way. But being mortal as we are, and having just

one-shot at earthly life, the urge to stay alive is stronger than

an ideology for most. And so we pick and choose from our

religious table, taking only what it pleases us to eat. And

yet we wrap ourselves within the Christian label, as though

it tells folks who and what we are.

Who wills the random conjunctions that evolve ones destiny?

One wants to think that life is something more than happenstance,

and so we pray for our life, our family, our friends, our country

were asking that (our) god play favorites. And why? Is not

each and every individual the same worth as you or I?

Thats what the Christian religion says. Had I been in a military

uniform in war, with loaded rifle and grenade in hand, I may

    have killed the father of the woman who is now my wife;

who would have known? Even the thought of that keeps me

away from guns, though some call that foolhardy in these times.

    KIDS KORNER

If there is no more wars and we are at peace, we will have to go under-

water and fight the sea creatures.

From one of the teachers: I didnt wear green for St. Patricks

Day. Dont worry. Your gall bladder is green.

My mind is only used for productivity, not writing.

One driver might drive and one might shoot. We should pray for the Police.

You should never let someone on drugs handle a gun.

It puts you into a more sophisticated life to do something bad.

    Sustainable Creation Care

Last month Steve Strathearn led a lively discussion during Adult Forum

about the world food crisis. As we ate a simple but delicious meal, we discussed

problems and shared possible solutions or at least contributions that our own con-sumer habits could make. At our request, our friend and former parishioner Ruth

Dick sent the following information outlining some websites that can add to our

    information pool.

The following are links to programs that help make sure that the products we consume are not

causing environmental destruction for poor people, especially in developing countries.

No Dirty Gold works to ensure that gold extraction does not use cyanide or other destructive prac-

tices. Go to http://www.nodirtygold.org/home.cfm; and go to http://www.nodirtygold.org/

supporting_retailers.cfmto find the list of jewelry retailers who have signed the pledge (currently

about 23% of the US jewelry market). Forest Stewardship Council certifies wood products and paper that is harvested sustainably and en-

gages responsibly with communities. Go to https://us.fsc.org/market.196.htm for information.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative also certifies products. Look for the certification seals on products

and, when making major purchases like hardwood flooring, ask the sales person. If they know their

stuff, they should know if it is certified. If they dont, they should know that people are asking. Be

cautious about someone extolling a beautiful tropical hardwood if they cant tell you that it is certi-

    fied.

    Prayer for St. Francis

We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Living

God, infuse us with your love. Enable us to proclaim the good news of Je-

sus Christ to all whom we meet through our actions, our thoughts, our

words. Make St. Francis' Church a place of invitation and welcome, a safe

harbor and a beacon of the light of Christ. Amen.
