Our Mission: Providing Support and Encouragement for Musical Opportunities

A Note from The President

I can’t believe the year has flown by so fast. As I write

this, spring finally seems to have arrived with the

temperature outside nearly 70 degrees. We have only a

few weeks remaining of the school year, but April and

May are some of the busiest months in the Choir

program. There are still many opportunities to hear our

students perform. Aside from the Musical, the annual

Choir Show is probably the next largest production of the

year. With the Glee theme this year, I’m sure it will

draw lots of attendance. Wrapping up the year, the

A Cappella Choir will perform with the Wind Ensemble

on May 23rd and then again at graduation on May 31st.

The Madrigal Singers will have their final concert on

May 28th. In addition, the private voice teachers will also

be holding individual recitals for their students. Please

check with your students for the dates and times of all of

these events.

To celebrate all the accomplishments of the year and to

just have one last fun time together, on Friday, May 17th

the Choral Boosters will host our annual DGS Choir

Banquet. The committee has been working very hard

planning for this event to be something special and we

hope that all of you plan to attend. See further details

inside.

As I wrap up my time as Choral Booster President, I truly

wish the best for the continued success of our

extraordinary music program and Booster program. The

Choral Boosters ALWAYS need volunteers for a variety

of tasks and activities. If you’re already an active booster

volunteer, we can’t thank you enough. We would never

be able to offer the amount of support we give to the

music department without your involvement. For those of

you who are ready to start getting involved now is the

time. Please come to any of our monthly booster

meetings next year generally on the second Monday of

each month. Our final meeting of this year is scheduled

for Monday, May 13th at 7:00 PM.

Thank you to all the DGS music staff, the private vocal

staff, the Choral Boosters, the parents and most of all the

students for showing us that music in our lives really

makes a difference!

We can’t thank you all enough for your support of the Ultra Foods fundraiser. As a

result of your efforts we raised $597.70 for the Choir Program. Thank You!

“Have a Heart” Gatto’s Valentine Dinner

Thank you also to those who supported the Gatto’s Valentine

Dinner and Fundraising Event. For the first time doing this

we had a wonderful time. Nearly 30 people attended the

dinner and enjoyed not only a wonderful dinner, but a great social event. Thank

you to Phillips Flowers for the donation of roses for all the women in attendance,

Target (and Tere Cervantes) for the donation of the cake, Mary Beth Werner for the

dinner favors of popcorn, and Carol Fendrick for the door prize donations of 2

bottles of wine and a bottle champagne. We raised $360 for the Choral Booster

Program from this event. Again, thank you to everyone who supported this event!

Take a night off from cooking!! Join the Downers Grove South Choir Kids for an Austria Trip Fundraiser Pizza Night on Tuesday, April 23rd from noon to 10 pm. You must show the flyer (attached in this newsletter) for your purchase to count.

Glee Encore: 2013 Choir Show

The Choir Show is coming in May! Our theme this year was selected by the choir students and

will feature the music of the TV series, Glee. Don’t miss this annual favorite performance on

May 2nd

and 3rd at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. An additional performance for elementary and

JH schools will be on Wednesday, May 1st at 10:30 AM.

*The mandatory Dress Rehearsal is scheduled for Monday, April 29th

from 5:45-9:00 PM.

It is very important that your student attends this rehearsal when we work on logistics, lights,

sound, drama, and rehearse with the pit band. *

Parent volunteers are needed to help with tee-shirt sales on Monday evening as well as

chaperoning the Freshman Choir, Concert Choir, and back stage. If you are interested in

shadowing your student’s choir, know that you will also be able to see the choir perform. There

will be a special seat reserved just for you in the front row so you can see and listen to your

student perform!

Contact Laura Coster at [email protected] if you would like to assist with a choir or helping

pass out tee shirts at the rehearsal or one of the performances.

If you haven’t made your case of water donation, there is still time. Feel free to

drop it off any time by Thursday. If you’re interested in helping with the musical,

please contact Joy Belt-Roselieb.

$$ Student Accounts $$

Attention Seniors! Parents don’t forget your students can request money from their student account to be used for any

approved choir related fees (private lessons, Choir banquet, choir show shirts, required ensemble apparel, trips,

etc.). If you are a senior or a student who will not be returning to the choir program the following year, you

must make your final requests for reimbursement by May 1st. All you need to do is check the balance on

the Student Account list posted in the Choir Room or on the website and complete a Student Account Refund

Request form. This form should be completed and deposited in the choir mailbox in the Choir Room. Requests

approved by the appropriate Choir Director will be reviewed and upon approval, a reimbursement will be made

and deducted from the Student Account balance.

♫ Private Voice Lessons ♫

It’s not too early to begin thinking about private voice lessons for the fall or maybe you don’t want to

forget everything you learned and want to take lessons over the summer. The DGS voice teachers will be happy

to register new students. Private lessons are conducted at the school before, after, or during the school day. All

of our private instructors have college degrees in music and have performed professionally as a singer. If you

are interested and want more information, contact Laura Coster at [email protected] or Joy Belt at

[email protected] .
