First Sunday Musicians
First Sunday is looking for people who
play instruments to help make music over
the summer. Existing group members are
busy and occasionally have to miss
practice. Groups find it hard to practice
without everyone present, so if there's
anyone out there who would like to fill in
over the summer they would appreciate
it. At the end of the summer you’d be free
to go or welcome to stay if all goes well.
Please contact Pam Freer or Sherilyn
Burgdorf for information.
Living God’s Call
80 Kids, 300 Patients, and 1 Home
by Pastor Ted
Our 2014 Mission Jamaica Team was the largest yet with 33 people from six different churches and five different denominations.
A new ministry site this year was the Westhaven Children’s home, housing approximately 80 special needs children from about 5 to 25 years old. A group of 10-12 men and woman helped with feeding, bathing and dressing the children, while others painted outside railings, walls, remove cement from walls and did laundry . . . lots and lots of laundry! While serving in a variety of ways we were also given the opportunity to love these sweet children. While many of them have disabilities unseen by most, your heart could not help but to embrace them with a soft voice, or provide a gentle touch to just let them know someone cares that they’re alive. As we left the orphanage each day, again, we were given hugs, big smile and lots of waves as our vehicle pulled out and the gate closed behind us. In the evenings, our group would always share things that touched our hearts that day, gave a few moans as we were tired and yet most of all we would talk of how thankful we were to be able to help make a difference.
Another part of the Mission Jamaica Team provided assistance to others through a traveling medical clinic. We stopped at four different locations to provide care, treatment and assistance to over 300 individuals. This mobile clinic team would travel by bus daily to a church or some other building, unpack trunks and suitcases full of medical supplies, set up exam rooms and a pharmacy, register and see patients. At the end of the day they would repack the trunks and suitcases so they could be moved to a different location the next day. We were able to purchase medicine through our Allina connections (and your financial donations) at approximately one-tenth of the usual price!
The third part of our team built a house for Rosalee and her family. The house, which is 16' by 12', was put up in three days with help from some of the neighborhood Jamaicans. We measured and cut the lumber. We assembled walls and constructed a roof. Each one of our team members brought valuable skills to the team effort. Working together with each of us doing a little piece, we truly made a difference in the lives of this family.
Thank you for your support of the 2014 Mission Jamaica Team with your prayers, donations of things and money, and your encouragement in our work.
Engaging people in a process of discipleship which inspires them 2

SERVE Weekend
God’s Work. Our Hands.
Try a new way to SERVE.
SERVE with others from Zion,
meeting new people.
SERVE at Zion to go above and
beyond the normal day's duties.
SERVE in the community, putting
hands to work beyond Zion's walls.
On April 25-27, Zion will dedicate a weekend to serving in our community!
A full list of serving options is being sent to Zion households via email and a SERVE weekend brochure. They're all short-term, mostly 1-3 hours in length. Some opportunities will be especially suited for families with children, others for youth and adults. Look them over and choose something that fits for you.
Sign up online at ZionBuffalo.org/serve2014 or by turning in the paper registration form at the information desk. Don’t put this one off … the first 100 people to sign up will receive a bright gold "God's Work. Our Hands" t-shirt, celebrating 25 years of the ELCA rolling up its sleeves and getting to work.
On Friday and Saturday of SERVE weekend, all workers will meet at Zion for a brief sending service at 4pm or 6:30pm on Friday and 9am or 10am on Saturday before heading to a few hours of serving.
Truckload of Life Food Packing Event
The SERVE Weekend will culminate on Sunday, April 27, with a celebration of service during worship and the Truckload of Life food packing event at Zion.
Sunday school students and the congregation will be able to be part of this packing project. It is sponsored by Harvest of Hands and the Sunday school kids’ Change for Children project, and the packed meals will be distributed around the world through Outreach Inc. Kid's Care.
As of mid-March it is estimated that we will be packaging 50,000 meals at a cost of $12,500. Additional donations can be accepted through Wednesday, April 23, to increase the number of meals that can be packaged. Use a pew envelope and write Truckload of Life in the memo.
Sign up for the 9:30am and 11:30am Truckload of Life food packing shifts and the set-up and clean-up shifts is open to everyone and will be available online at ZionBuffalo.org/serve2014. Sunday school students will pack meals during their regular 8:30am or 10:30am class time.
If you have any questions about the truckload project, please contact Joy Arens or Kirsten Kelly.

Music and Children
Wendy and John Lindlief lived in the Wadena area all their married lives. Their son and his family live in Eden Prairie where he teaches fifth grade and is head cross-country coach and assistant track and field coach. Their daughter works as a nurse anesthetist at the Buffalo Hospital and her family lives in St. Cloud.
Music and children are two of Wendy's passions. She started accompanying children's Sunday school and choirs in early junior high school at Faith Lutheran Church in Bagley, and later at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wadena.
I love watching the children learning new songs and being excited about music! I also loved leading worship in two different settings where I involved kids, Jay Beech's "One Body Alive" and Marty Haugen's "Holden Service."
Wendy served on the Music and Worship Committee at Immanuel for many years, and is trained as a Stephen Minister.
I found this ministry to be a very vital aspect in the life of the church in reaching out and supporting its members.
When Wendy and John moved to Buffalo last May to be closer to their grown children and grandchildren, they decided that Zion would be a good fit for them.
John and I visited Zion several times and were always greeted and warmly welcomed every time we worshiped.
Before long, Carol Moore called Wendy to see if she would be interested in accompanying the SONshine Choir.
I was thrilled and didn't hesitate to say yes! Carol Moore does a fantastic job with the children in teaching them about the correct ways of singing, the importance of participating in worship, and making it fun for all to "make a joyful noise to the Lord!"
Wendy also enjoys singing in Zion's Senior Choir and playing clarinet in the Zion Wind Ensemble. She looks forward to getting more involved at Zion in the future, and might be interested in serving on the Worship and Music Committee.
Music is also central to Wendy's professional life. She is a former band director and has taught piano lessons since her children were in high school, when she resigned from teaching in school and started a full-time studio. Since moving to Buffalo she has continued the piano studio with new students. Wendy also loves to travel, read, cross-stitch, quilt, and spend warm summer afternoons on their pontoon.

God's Friday
Why would such a somber day in the
church be called "good?" The day that
was originally "God's Friday" or Holy
Friday becomes a day of reflection for
Christians. The story that begins on
Friday has a "good" ending that's
familiar to us on Easter Sunday.
Come to Zion on Good Friday evening,
April 18, for a 7pm worship service of
reflection. Hear scripture and readings
and sing familiar hymns that point us to
the live-giving cross of Christ. Zion's
Senior Choir will present portions of
The Seven Last Words of Christ by
Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt in
choruses and solos as well as other
meaningful choir anthems for the quiet
evening worship. As the sanctuary
darkens during this tenebrae service,
worshipers reflect on the love of Christ
that remains with us, even from the
cross.
Nursery care is available at these
services.

New Again
by Pastor Luke
Do you ever wish that you could “un-know” something? I’m not talking about merely forgetting it or pretending it never happened, but really and truly having it wiped completely from your memory. In certain cases, I can see how this would be a gift. For example, when I was in college I realized that if I started dating someone, it could possibly be the person I would end up marrying. Being the forward thinker I am and also determining that I wouldn’t sabotage my ‘tall’ genes with a short future wife and mother to my children, (I was quite the planner, I guess) I decided that 5'7" or taller would be my height requirement for any woman I would date. Along came Jessica and our first phone conversation. We have a nice chat and decide on plans for a first date. About to hang up, I quickly remembered my height requirement and hastily asked, “By the way, how tall are you?” “Oh, 5'6"-5'7"”, she says. Relieved, I respond, “Oh good, that will do…”
I wish Jess could “un-know” that little bit of our history, but at least I prepared her for a lifetime of awkward comments and foot-in-mouth moments. You can’t say she wasn’t warned!
I’m betting you thought of something in life you wish you could un-hear or un-see or un-know. We all do. But imagine the opportunity to experience something life-changing all over again. Holding your child the first time. Saying “I do” again. Having that last day with grandma or mom or dad again. How about an extraordinary God moment all over again? If you grew up in the church or in a family of faith, you likely heard many stories about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and their workings in history and today. Those stories were only new to you once, and now that you’ve heard them, the endings, while amazing, are predictable.
This Lent, I have this nagging feeling that makes me want to un-know how it all ends, so I can do it all over again for the first time. Part of me wants to be in the midst of the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the somber last supper with Jesus and his closest friends. I’d like to be surprised by Judas and his betrayal in the garden, to watch for the first time as Jesus heals the servant. I’d like to feel the disappointment of hearing Peter betray Jesus three times. I’d never want to witness what Jesus went through in his beating and torture, I’m sure I’d run away overwhelmed, but I’d feel the profound nature of his love as he endured that pain and cruelty because of his love for us. I want to feel and experience the animosity of the crowd as Jesus walked toward the hill, I want my world to be shattered by the sound of the hammer and nails as Jesus is put on the cross. I want to hear him say, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” I want to see the sky turn black, to see the people realize what they have done.
Perhaps it seems morbid to want to experience all of that as though for the first time again, but only by entering wholly into the story does the reality of Lent

2014 Women's Spring Brunch
God, Girlfriends, and Chocolate
Saturday, May 3
Life is often called a journey, complete with all of the things we encounter on a spring road trip through Minnesota: open roads, rest stops, detours, potholes, and road closures. At this year's women's spring brunch, speaker Gaye Lindfors will share stories about some of those journeys. Through humor and heart-felt stories, she will highlight the three travel needs for our journey: God, girlfriends, and chocolate.
Gaye Lindfors has written a book of the same name, God, Girlfriends and Chocolate, which will be available for purchase after the Saturday brunch at Zion.
Gaye loves to laugh, and isn’t afraid to poke fun at her own mishaps. From growing up in a small farming community to living in the big city, she loves the stories that came from observing life in the real world. With humor, authenticity, and passion, she helps women develop a deeper faith life while they reconnect to what matters most. Musicians for the brunch will highlight the musical friendships of the Rainbow Singers, college friends Amanda Burgdorf and Katherine Lewiston, and workplace friends Angela Bengtson and Sherilyn Burgdorf.
Doors open at 9am on Saturday morning with the brunch beginning at 9:30. If you have a group of five or more, make a note when you register and there will be a table reserved for you. Invitation postcards are available at the information desk. Brunch is catered by Cornerstone Cafe in Monticello.
Laugh, chuckle, and discover how to experience the trip with joy, rather than just going along for the ride.
Check in with friends and family members to make sure they can come with you for a great morning's journey on May 3. Cost will be $10 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. Sign up at the information desk, in the Zion office, or online at ZionBuffalo.org/women by April 23.
Connecting With Care
Kristin Lotthammer
Kristin and Brian Lotthammer have lived in Buffalo for 16 years, became members of Zion in 1999 and were married at Zion in 2000.
When we first moved to Buffalo, we began looking for a church to become members of. Pastor Ed Blair had us hooked in a moment’s time.
Kristin worked as the Director of Education for Change of Mind Learning Systems, a supplemental learning center, from 2000-2005. Cargill Scholars Program was a grant based program providing tutoring for 50 socially, economically diverse students in grades 4-8 in a variety of schools in Minneapolis.
Kristin and Brian now have two children, Cate (almost 11) and, Andrew (9), as well as a one-year-old yellow lab named Sunshine.
When the grant for the Cargill Scholars program ended in 2005, Kristin made a change and stayed home with the kids. She eventually found herself working a variety of part-time jobs.
I love each and every one of them, for different reasons. I teach Silver Sneakers Classes at Fitness Evolution, I teach tumbling to toddlers and preschoolers for Tammi's Tumbling Teddies, and I do some tutoring for children in grades K-6th grade. I am beyond blessed to say, I love and have loved all of my jobs!
Kristin has been involved with teaching Sunday school and helping with VBS at Zion for 4 years.
My love and passion for working with and teaching children has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. Getting involved in the Children's Ministry Program at Zion seemed like a perfect fit for me and the best of both worlds...working with children and teaching them about God!
Kristin is passionate about helping build the foundations of faith that Zion’s kids will hopefully carry for a lifetime.
It's a time for children to get together and celebrate God. A time to reinforce the teachings of Christ in which they should be learning at home. These children are our future, and the impact of faith and religion needs to be strong.
Kristin was asked to be part of the Children and Family Ministry Task Force to help create a job description for new employees on the CFM team.
As I sat in on the meetings, listened, and shared my input, I had a calling. It felt as it was all meant to be.

come into focus. The cross stands in sharp contrast on the horizon, beckoning us to come near and see what is happening. Again, imagine if this was the first time you heard the story. It must be over, Jesus is dead, God has lost.
Come and live the rest of the story for the first time again. Ask God to give you a fresh heart as we conquer death with Jesus. Prepare the way for the Lord as you join us for Easter!

Giving Appreciated Assets
When most people think of making a financial gift to their church, they think of giving cash or writing a check. This is usually giving from one’s current income. But you may want to consider giving appreciated assets rather than cash. There can be tremendous benefits for both.
Our congregation can receive gifts of appreciated assets; donors can deduct the full market value at the time of the gift, not just the original investment cost. Examples of assets that can be given to Zion as charitable gifts at anytime are:
Stock
Publicly traded stock that is listed on the NY Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange or Over the Counter (NASDAQ) Exchange-perhaps the best type of gift because it is valued each and every day.
Shares in Mutual Funds
Same approach as stock.
Private Stock
Stock that is closely held in private companies by partners, family members.
Farmland and Real Estate
Land that has appreciated in value and has no encumbrances (mortgages or liens).
Collectibles
Artwork, coin and stamp collections.
Commodities
Grain, cotton, livestock, etc.
These other ways to give may be very beneficial to both Zion and to you, the giver. If you would like to talk about these options, please contact either Pastor Ted or Pastor Luke, or talk with your financial advisor about your wishes.

Confirmation Classes are Changing
Zion has had a tradition of a two year Confirmation class, which has been for 7th and 8th graders. Zion is excited to announce that beginning in September 2014, confirmation will “re:form” to a three year program! This means that confirmation will be for 6th, 7th and 8th grade.
Currently, the curriculum includes one year of Bible and one year of Lutheran Theology/Doctrine. With the opportunity of going to three years, we will be able to focus on a three-year rotational plan, with year A focusing on Old Testament, year B focusing on New Testament and year C focusing on Lutheran theology and doctrine.
To help make this transition successful, many volunteers will be needed to assist as confirmation guides, musicians, readers and more. Please pray and consider stepping up into one of these roles.
An Intro to Confirmation will be held on Wednesday, May 28, at 6pm in the Sanctuary. This will be for all students who will be in 6th and 7th grades this fall and their parents. This will also be the first night to register for the fall program and to answer any questions.
2015 Senior High Summer Trip
If you are currently in 8th-11th grade, you are invited to come to Zion’s Fellowship Hall on Wednesday, May 28, at 7:15pm to hear more details about the 2015 summer trip to the ELCA Youth Gathering. This will be the first opportunity to sign up for this amazing event and answer any questions.
The ELCA Youth Gathering only happens every three years. Over 37,000 students from throughout the country come Rise Up Together” to do faith formation, share fellowship, play, sing, serve, and learn.
It is an opportunity for youth to engage in worship and fellowship with peers from across the United States and the world who share a common commitment and faith in Christ.
The Youth Gathering will be held July 15-19, 2015, in Detroit, MI at Ford Field.

Children in Worship
On Wednesday, April 9, at 6:30 pm, there's an extra reason for families and children to come to Zion's Wednesday Lenten worship. After special music from the SONshine Choir and the children's message, children will join Marsha, Kristin and Kirsten for a short Bible lesson and craft in Fellowship Hall for the remainder of the service. The Zion staff is searching for ways to involve children in both worship and education on Sunday mornings. We'll be listening for comments from children, parents, and all worshipers on April 9 to see if this might be a good format to use on Sundays beginning next fall.
Palm Sunday Special Music
Sunday School children will be singing in worship on Palm Sunday, April 13. Kids will sing at their normal Sunday school hour.
8:30 students will sing "Hosanna Loud Hosanna" with the Senior Choir
10:30 students will sing "All Creatures of our God and King."
Watch the Sunday school web page and your email for practice links for each song.
Good Friday Cross Crafts and Worship
A brief family worship service will be held at 5pm on Good Friday, April 18, followed by crafts based around the cross. Make a rugged cross, bake a bread stick cross and see what other surprises we have in store! Kids of all ages are welcome to attend.
Adults and youth, contact Kirsten to volunteer at a craft station.
VBS Registration & Bible Buddy Hunt
VBS is coming June 9-13 from 9-Noon! Early registration will be open on Wednesday, April 9. Music CDs and t-shirts will be available on April 28 for those who register by Wednesday, April 23. Help staff to plan better by wiping out walk-in registrations ... tell your friends to sign up EARLY!
Bible Buddy Hunt
A Bible Buddy Hunt begins on March 30! A picture of one of the Bible Buddies will be hiding around the church building on each of the last 5 weeks
of Sunday School. Clues will be given in Sunday school large group time, and once kids find the
buddy, they can report back to the Sunday school office and receive a prize! Get excited for Weird Animals VBS!

Facilities Staffing Update
Zion is currently in an interim status with
our Facilities team and would like to
thank Lyle Jans, Joel Mackereth, and
Kelsey Mackereth for stepping up to help.
The pastors along with the personnel
committee and staff are working on
creating the best scenario to maintain and
care for the building and grounds for the
long term. It may be that we hire along
the same model we have had for the last
few years, or we may retool the positions
and try something new. Either way, we
will be posting revised job descriptions in
the near future and hope to begin
interviewing by the start of May.
Any questions can be addressed to the
personnel committee or Pastor Luke.
More than a Day
How much do you know about Easter?
Adapted from the Winter 2014 issue of
the Thrivent Magazine by Karen Worner
Easter. For many, it’s a day to get
dressed up in new clothes and go to
church. It’s filling Easter baskets and
baking a ham. However, for Christians,
the Easter celebration isn’t a single day.
Easter Sunday, the celebration of the
resurrection of Jesus Christ and one of the
most significant Christian holy days, is the
realization of God’s promise of eternal
life. The preparation for Easter actually
starts 40 days earlier on Ash Wednesday,
which begins the season called Lent. The
last days of Lent, from Palm Sunday to
Holy Saturday, are known as Holy Week.
After Easter is a season called Eastertide,
the 50 days from Easter to Pentecost
Sunday. While not all Christian churches
recognize these days and seasons in the
same way, many Christians are familiar
with them. See what you know, or learn
something new:
Where does the word “Easter” come from? Surprisingly, there’s no definitive answer.
It might have come from the Anglo-Saxon
word “ostre,” which means some believe
meant ”the month of opening.” Or it

Keeping a Busy Building Running
Joel and Laurie Mackereth have been members of Zion since 1985, and have three grown daughters who were baptized at Zion.
We cherish the memories of all the activities our three children participated in as they grew up in Zion.
Joel is recently retired from 28 years of service as a Sheriff’s Deputy for Wright County, mostly with the Water Patrol. He also served in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman for 20 years.
Since retirement, I’ve been able to tackle those home projects that have been put off for years, along with many yard projects. Retirement has also given me more time to devote to my family and friends.
The Mackereth family enjoys biking, camping, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, fishing, and canoeing/camping the BWCA. On the cold days of winter or rainy days of summer, Joel spends time in his wood shop building “whatever comes in handy.”
Being involved in ministries at Zion used to revolve around what daughters Kailan, Kelsey, and Kiley were doing at Zion.
As they were growing up, we were involved in a lot of different youth group activities: mission trips, youth choirs, handbell choir, canoeing adventures on the Namekagon River, and biking trips on the Cannon River bike path.
One thing that Joel values at Zion is the blessing of having a spacious building that can accommodate bringing hearts and hands together to serve God’s people.
This facility is enjoyed by members of Zion and is openly shared with many organizations and groups of people from our local community. I enjoy meeting and working with people of all ages and watching diverse groups come together to work as one cohesive group. This allows us to grow both personally and as a church family; we do so many good things for others and the community.
Part of Joel’s responsibility when he served on the church council from 2004 to 2006 was working with the Property Committee.
I chose the Property Committee because I connected with the opportunity to be able to tinker with whatever needs fixing, help analyze our current needs, and offer ideas for future growth. Serving on the Council and the Property Committee was a great way to meet more people and to help our church meet the needs of its members in serving God’s mission.
Joel and Laurie have both enjoyed helping out with coffee fellowship, the Lutefisk Dinner, and

Nancy Olson
Nancy Olson has been a member of Zion for about five years. She and daughter Zoe began attending worship services when they spent weekends at their lake home just north of Buffalo.
I distinctly remember the first time we visited Zion, we were greeted by Sherilyn. At the time I didn't fully realize all the great that was to come, but now do, and am very thankful!
When they decided to make Buffalo their full-time home, Zion became their new church home.
That was five years ago, we never look back on that decision, not even with the challenges this unruly winter has presented!
Nancy has been the owner of City Image Salon in Eagan for 25 years. She has had other business interests, but the salon is now her full-time focus.
I truly enjoy what I do. Listening and problem solving are my greatest strengths and after 25 years of doing so, I still find a good challenge extremely motivating!
Connecting with others is a special interest and of much importance to Nancy. She has just begun a three-year term on Zion's council. and looks forward to learning more about the ministries at Zion and how she can best fulfill her commitment to serve the members of Zion.
I am honored to serve on the Zion church council. I have a sincere commitment to the efforts Zion continues to embark upon. I would like to help others find their place in our Zion community as Zoe and I have been so fortunate to do.
I would like to
help others find
their place in our
Zion
community ...
could have come from the Old German
word “auferstehung,” which meant
“resurrection”.
Why does Easter’s date change every year? The early church debated whether they
should celebrate Easter on the same day
each year like Christmas or whether it
should be a “moveable feast”. Since
Sunday was associated with the
Resurrection (three days after the
crucifixion, in A.D. 325, the church
decided to make Easter the first Sunday
after the first full moon that follows the
March equinox.
What is “Maundy Thursday” and what does “Maundy” mean? “Maundy Thursday”, which occurs three
days before Easter Sunday, comes from
the Latin –mandatum novum, which
means “new commandment.” At the last
supper, Jesus told His disciples: “A new
commandment I give you, that you love
one another.” (John 13:34)
What is Pentecost? Pentecost Sunday celebrates the coming
of the Holy Spirit 50 days after the
Resurrection. Before Jesus was crucified,
He told His disciples that the Holy Spirit
would come after He died (John 14:16-
18). Fifty days after Jesus was
resurrected, His disciples felt the presence
of the Holy Spirit and began to proclaim
the Gospel of the risen Christ (Acts 2:1-
41).

with making tasty omelets for Harvest of Hands. With the children now off building their own nests, Joel has kept busy by helping more with building and grounds maintenance and repairs at Zion.
In his retirement, Joel started working part-time with the city of Buffalo in the Utility Department, and he has been called to serve Zion’s facility and people in a new way, as part of the interim maintenance staff team.
He was surprised to find out just how busy Zion’s facility is. Zion opens it doors to a multitude of activities not only Sundays, but all through the week both day and night. Some activities are specific to Zion’s ministry, and others involve many organizations and groups of people from our community.
With all these groups occupying Zion’s structure, the staff is constantly and continuously engaged in organizing room schedules, preparing and maintaining every room, setting up and taking down furniture and supplies for events, and cleaning up after those events. This is in addition to all of the general things that need to be done on a daily basis to maintain a clean, orderly, and welcoming facility.

Our Mission... Zion seeks to
Share Christ’s Word,
Strengthen faith, and
Serve those in need.

1. Celebrating on Sundays:
Creating Sunday morning experiences that invite, welcome, engage and inspire people to live for Christ.
2. Living God’s Call:
Engaging people in a process of discipleship which inspires them to
trust in Christ, grow in faith, and serve God’s world.
3. Connecting with Care:
Creating a community where people are connected in relationships and
supported in need.
Poet in Residence at Redeemer Lutheran
The following is an adapted excerpt from an article by Katherine Parent, of Redeemer Lutheran Church. A reprint of the entire article can be found online at ZionBuffalo.org/redeemer.
Joe Davis grew up in a nondenominational Pentecostal church in North Dakota, where his parents were active members. In college at Minot State, Joe began to go on spring break service trips with the campus ministry. The campus pastor, who happened to be Lutheran, encouraged Joe to become a peer minister. Her mentoring helped him grow in faith and as a leader, and the ELCA became an important part of his life. While speaking at a ELCA youth event in college, Joe saw Redeemer member Agape* (Dave Scherer) perform Christian hip hop. The two became friends, and Dave became an informal mentor for Joe, helping him make connections and gain performance experience.
After he graduated in 2013, and attending the month-long Tribeca Summer

Easter Plant Fundraiser
Every year Zion has a beautiful display of all kinds of different plants and blooming flowers for our Sunday morning Easter Services. The plants/flowers are usually given in memory of or in honor of someone special to you and/or your family. It is a nice way to recognize your loved ones and to show gratitude for God’s many blessings.
For those with allergies, the Sunrise service at 7am and the 9:45 and 10:45am contemporary services in Trinity Hall will be flower-free.
A list of plant donors will be published in the bulletin on Easter Sunday.
Selected plants can be ordered through a Property Committee fundraiser. Order forms are available online and from the church office. Place your order by March 31 for guaranteed selection, or by April 13 with possible substitution. Proceeds will benefit kitchen upgrades.
If you would like to order directly from a florist or purchase from a grocery store or discount store, flowers should have your name on them and be delivered to Zion by 10am on Saturday, April 19. Please let the office know you will be providing your own plant using the form available online or at the information desk.
The plants are arranged on Saturday, April 19, at 10:30am. If you can help, please feel free to stop in and lend a hand.
All plants can be picked up after the 10:30 Easter Sunday worship service or on Tuesday, April 22. The church is closed on Monday, April 21.

Harvest of Hands
Harvest of Hands is an annual event held
at Zion to feed the hungry in our own
community and around the world.
Proceeds of the 2014 sale will benefit the
Buffalo Food Shelf and a global hunger
project.
Craft groups work on a variety of projects
throughout the year in preparation for the
annual sale in November.
The Wednesday evening group will
work on creating cards, envelopes,
and iris folding items like cards and
pictures on April 9 and 23. During
Lent they meet after worship at
7:15pm.
The Tuesday morning group will meet
on April 8 and 22 at 9am.
All are welcome at the craft groups,
either to work on the planned projects or
to bring your own projects and enjoy the
evening with friends. Join us for fun,
fellowship, and a sense of
accomplishment. Both groups meet in the
Wilderness Room.
Crafters can also work on projects at
home. Supplies are available for home
projects. Contact Joy Arens for more
information.
Harvest of Hands is again
sponsoring a food packaging
event in April, this year as
part of the congregation-wide
SERVE Weekend (see page 3
for more details).
Are You Expecting?
If you or someone you know at Zion is
expecting a baby, please notify Dawn or
Ann in the office so that we can keep
record of your due date. This will help
our staff to connect with you and allow
the Birth to Age 3 Ministry Team to know
when to have your new Splash newsletter
available. We will also place a birth rose
on the altar shortly after the birth of your
child once we hear of their arrival. After
the new year, plans will be made to start
a home-visit team and then this rose will
be delivered to your home along with your
Baptism Bundle. Thanks for your
partnership on this journey!

Kristin applied for and was hired as one of Zion’s Children’s and Family Ministry Coordinators.
I have only been a staff member for 3 months, but wow! is all I can say. It is the most welcoming, warm, atmosphere. The other staff immediately make you feel like family. It has surprised me how hard each and every staff member works at Zion, going above and beyond their call of duty. The support for one another is so evident, Zion staff is definitely a team and works together great! I am so honored and blessed to be part of this team at Zion. I love coming to work each day and experiencing something new every Sunday!
It is important to Kristin to get parents and families involved in ministry.
I feel it is our job to help keep families informed, help train them, and provide opportunities for families to interact with their children in a spiritual way. Families and the church need to have an amazing partnership and be ready for some great teamwork in raising these children.
Volunteering and being active in the community beyond Zion is also important to Kristin. She volunteers in her children’s classrooms, serves as the Volunteer Coordinator and PTO President at Northwinds Elementary, and helps with her children’s sporting events. At Zion she has also volunteered in the Food for Friends ministry.
Kristin also enjoys family time, running, exercise classes at the health club, hiking, biking, enjoying the lake, anything outdoors (except for this winter), spending time with friends, and going on vacation.
(Kristin Lotthammer continued from page 7)
Project in New York, Joe felt drawn back to Redeemer. Joe enjoys this job at Redeemer because he feels free to fully focus on and explore his “passion for relational service through creative expression.” He loves to build relationships, which in turn inspire his poetry.
This spring, Joe is excited to start a series of open mic nights at Venture North. For years, he has loved organizing open mics, where people can share poetry, music and stories. In his experience, when people open their hearts to a listening audience, something very special can happen—a deep, healing connection.
