The Ann Arbor Arrow – March 2014 On March 21 st our chapter partnered with KGrams, a pen pal organization on campus, to celebrate our Fraternity Day of Service. Throughout the past year sisters in our chapter have exchanged letters with students at an elementary school in Detroit, David Ellis Academy. Pi Beta Phi chose to become involved with KGrams because both organizations value literacy, especially with children. On the 21 st our girls gathered in Michigan’s IM Building to celebrate KGram’s Kid’s Fair. The Fair served as a way for students to finally meet their pen pals and engage in various literacy based activities. Pi Phi set up a table where children could create personal, mini books with paper and colored yarn. Markers and crayons were also provided for the most exciting part – decorating! The event lasted from 9am to 2pm. As the day progressed we were also able to interact with students from other elementary schools. Over 1,000 children were present at the event. We had a blast meeting them and creating storybooks together. The day served as a great reminder of why we care so much about literacy – these children are our future! Pictured (top to bottom): Anna Mordell, NMC’13, with her pen pal; Colleen Carlos, NMC’10, with students from David Ellis; A picture of a booklet Anna made with her pen pal. It reads “Dear Anna, I am so happy I got to meet you. I had a very good time with you today.” Fraternity Day of Service Spring Break 2014: New Member Class ’11 rep Pi Phi on the beaches of Mexico (left) while members of New Member Class ’12 throw what they know in Fort Lauderdale, FL (right).

Founder’s  Day  On  Sunday,  March  30,  2014,  the  ladies  of  the  Michigan  Beta  chapter  of

Pi  Beta  Phi  came  together  with   local  alumni  to   celebrate  the   founding  of  Pi  Bet  Phi.  The  girls  enjoyed  a  lovely  brunch,  time  to  talk  with  each  other,  and  getting  to  know  some  of   the  alumni.  Of  course  many  Pi  Phi  rituals  made  an  appearance,  such  as  Pi  Phi  grace,  Ring  Ching,  and  a  rendition  of  “Take  a  Little  Golden  Arrow”  by  members  Hannah  Schwimmer  and  Sami  Goldstein.       Awards  were  handed  out  to  members  of  every  pledge  class  based  on  their   academic   achievements   of   the   prior   semester   and   outstanding  participation   in   service.     The   girls   also   enjoyed   the   guest   speaker   Pam  Byrnes,   a   fellow   Pi   Phi   sister   and   a   congressional   candidate.     Everyone  listened  intently  as  Byrnes  spoke  about  the  importance  of  asserting  yourself

as  a  woman  in  the  workplace.   It  was   inspiring  to  see  a  woman  who  started  where  we  are  now,  spending  her  college  years  at  836  Tappan  and  evolving  into  such  an  accomplished  and  well-‐respected  individual.       All  in  all,  the  day  went  off  without  a  hitch  and  served  as  an  excellent  celebration  of  the  founding  of  our  beloved  Pi  Beta  Phi.

• “For   me,   studying   abroad   in   Florence   has  been  a  whirlwind,  but  an  amazing  one!  This  city  is  full  of  culture,  interesting  people,  and  amazing   food.   And   even   better,   I   still   have  time  to  visit  so  many  European  cities  on  the  weekends!”

–  Sarah  Abel,  Florence,  Italy  • “"Studying   in   Madrid,   Spain   this   semester

has   been   a   dream   come   true!   I'm   studying  here  with  my  Pi  Phi  sister  Sara  Atkin  as  well  as   many   other   U   of   M   students.   We've  already   done   lots   of   traveling   throughout  Spain  and  visited  Morocco,  my   favorite   trip  so  far!  Meeting  up  and  staying  with  other  Pi  Phi's   who   are   abroad   is   an   amazing   and  surreal   experience   because  we   are   literally  half   way   around   the   world.   I   can't   wait   to   continue   my   travels   this   semester   and  return  to  Ann  Arbor   in   the   fall   to  catch  up  with  all  of  my  Pi  Phi  sisters!”   -‐    Meghan

Room  Tour  –  The  Bud  Room  Sophomores  Alex  Madjeric  and  Megan  Buranosky  currently

live   in   the   Bud   Room   at   836   Tappan.   The   two   met   on   Bid   Day  freshmen  year  and  decided  to  become  roommates  during  Pi  Phi’s  annual  Barn  Dance.  Megan  and  Alex  were  drawn  to  the  Bud  Room  because   of   the   cozy   atmosphere   and   the   two   big   windows   that  provide   extra   light.   The   two   agree   that   their   favorite  memory   in  the  Bud  Room  is  staying  in  the  night  before  a  snow  day,  watching  movies  together.

Puppies  on  the  Porch  –  raised  $2890.35!  On  April  4th  Pi  Beta  Phi  partnered  with  the
