Call for Aircraft Show and ShineRemember last year’s spring Open House and all the fun we had out on the ramp? It was a serious aircraft static display! In fact, it was so much fun, we want to do it again!

On Saturday May 9 from 11-3 we will once again open our doors and invite the commu-nity in to see who we are and what we do here at VFC. We’re excited to share our love of aviation with our many expected visitors and we’d like you to join us in showcasing your amazing aircraft!

2015 VFC Board of Directors

On Thursday, March 5 members of the Victoria Flying Club convened for the Club’s Annual General Meeting. VFC is a not-for-profit organization, meaning that the Club belongs to each individual who pays a membership, and that any financial profit belongs to the Club, and not to an indivdual owner or investor.

The Victoria Flying Club is governed by a volunteer board, who are elected each year at the AGM. Our board brings a mix of business experience

combined with a love of flying and a passion for the success of the Victoria Flying Club. They put in significant unpaid hours to make sure VFC remains a safe, affordable, and fun place to fly.

When you see the VFC board members around the Club, please do stop and introduce yourself. They are a friendly bunch, and are always more than happy to chat with members. Get to know them, and find out more about how you can get involved in making VFC a fantastic place to be!

While most flying clubs and flight training organizations might set their rental rates for the year and be done with it, we have, in the past couple of years, done some tweaking and adjusting to try to accomplish two things. The first goal we have is to keep flying affordable. And we’ve been able to do that in a number of ways which we’ll outline below. The second thing we want to do is make the most efficient use of our fleet by distributing flight hours more evenly around the clock, and also across the calendar.

Bad News/Good News:

Bad news first. We occasionally have to raise the rental rates at VFC. It doesn’t happen often, and is never done arbitrarily. These discussions are often involved and the end result is in accordance with expenses, demand, and with consideration of the current economic climate and inflation rates. We want to keep rates as low as possible for as long as possible, and at the same time avoid the need for large price adjustments that would occasionally be needed if we let the inevitable cost increases accumulate for too long.

As such, we have a price change scheduled for June, and we are confident that it will allow

all of our members to keep on doing what they love. VFC offers one of the lowest base rental rates in Canada, and we are determined to keep it that way!

And now the good news!

Regardless of the base rental rate, there are ways that you can shape your flying habits to suit your budget. You can choose to save money, and you can easily make it happen! Who doesn’t love that? Here’s how:

1. Take advantage of VFC’s Quiet Hour Pricing.

If you fly between 1700 and 0930, you can save upwards of 10%. Monday to Friday, there is a $10 discount during those hours. On weekends the discount is $15 per hour. If just a portion of your flight occurs during those hours, you still get a discount on that portion of your flight. Our dispatch software will do the math and ensure that you get the best possible price. And anyone who regularly flies during the morning and evening will tell you that a reduced rental rate isn’t the only benefit. Conditions are often better, and there is less air traffic overall. It’s a relaxing and fun way to start or end your day!

2. Don’t wait for summer!

We all know we’re fortunate to live and fly here in YYJ. It’s a fact we are all too happy to brag about to our friends and relations anywhere west of Chilliwack. Spring and fall weather in Victoria is ideal for recreational flying or flight training. So don’t wait for summer to dust off your ambitions. You can do a lot of flying before the price change takes effect on June 15!

3. Book your Annual Check Ride

As a VFC Flying or Life Member, VFC offers two hours of instructor time annually for you to check in and ensure that you are flying sharp and safe. For your annual check ride, you need only pay for the aircraft rental, and any instructor time over and above two hours. You can book your check ride for any time that suits your schedule, so why not do it now before the price increase? Even better, book it on a weekend during the Quiet Hours and save an extra $15 per hour on your rental.

RESPONSIBILITY AS ACCESS TO ACHIEVING YOUR GOALSTracey Burns, Executive Coaching and Consulting

Goal Setting is a very common topic of conversation during my coaching engagements however I like to take a very uncommon approach to this popular topic. By exploring with my clients their perceptions, beliefs, thoughts and feelings about themselves and then their actions in relationship to achieving what it is they say they’d like to achieve we can provide access to possibility, creativity and innovation and usually create extraordinary results. Sounds easy right? Ah,

not so fast! Cue stage left, the human who (despite stating they really, really want to achieve the goal and will do what it takes to get there) sets the goal, takes action towards the goal and then begins to meet opposition and/or obstacles on the pathway to achievement. We’ve all been there right?

When we are stretching ourselves and our leadership, it is absolutely normal that obstacles and opposition will appear. However, often we relate to these circumstances as though they shouldn’t be happening. Sometimes we go so far as to get defensive, resigned, negative, perplexed, confused, disorganized, overwhelmed, stressed and hugely impacted by all of the circumstances “beyond our control”. Sometimes we even blame other people for our lack of results, a huge power leak for leaders. Consider that blaming ourselves and others evokes defensiveness and inhibits awareness and positive risk taking, blocks honest recognition, identification and acknowledgment of inefficiencies in people, processes and systems.

Often I use, “the opposite of” as a tool with my clients. The opposite behaviour to blaming for example would

be to get responsible. Let’s explore the powerful word “responsibility” and expand its definition. Responsibility means the willing acceptance of the consequences of your actions or perhaps your duty to deal with something or someone; the duty of carrying out your job or a particular task. Now consider your relationship to the word, “responsibility”. What do you think of? Does the word land negatively for you or does it carry any burden or obligation? People can spin out for days here, getting pulled into inactivity as they swirl in their negative emotions. Consider how effective and efficient your actions would become absent of the negativity, burden and obligation?

When we assume a true stand of responsibility as a way of being, we give up defensiveness, excuse making, lying, self-protection, blame, judgment and most importantly our interpretations of the events and circumstances. When we adopt this version of responsibility absent of negativity, we not only take back our power, we add velocity to our actions. We act with clarity and efficiency.

Being responsible takes work, discipline and commitment. It requires us to abandon the

personal implications of the situation in exchange for a more future focused exploration of the facts. An effective way to shift your relationship to being responsible can be practiced by using the following three questions:

What happened? Rather than looking for someone to blame or put at fault be genuinely interested in the facts as they stand.

What was missing? Not from a place of something wrong which almost always puts people on

the defensive but from a place of curiosity and discovery.

What’s next? Being able, willing and ready to take action based on the answers discovered absent of anger and/or negative emotions.

In adopting this new definition of responsibility we add power and clarity to our lives and in addition, create a new level of effectiveness when setting and achieving goals. Every day you proceed to take action towards your goal you will find yourself at choice points. In that precise

moment of choice, taking a stand of responsibility, being willing to take the initiative will most certainly generate new outcomes for you in every area of your life and pave the way for those you interact with to do the same.

COPA Quadrant

Once again the lounge at VFC was filled up by COPA members on March 3rd, all there to hear of the progress being made on the restoration of a Catalina at YYJ. The Catalina Preservation Society has been working hard on it and it is expected to be flying by summertime. The talk was accompanied by lots of photos of this immensely interesting and useful aircraft, including publicity shots of it in use, post WWII as a luxury “RV” for the wealthy.

This famous Catalina has lain abandoned for over 50 years on the beach off the Strait of Tiran on the Saudi Arabian side of the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba. The aircraft is a PBY-5A model and was bought from the US Navy by Thomas W Kendall, a retired businessman who converted it to a luxury flying yacht.

The next meeting of COPA will be held in the VFC lounge, Tuesday, April 7th at 7 PM. The speaker for the evening is Jason Stewart, CFI of Pro IFR who will speak to us about the IFR rating. Jason became an instructor with VFC in 2002, and in addition to his Class 1 Instructor rating, he is also a Multi-IFR Transport Canada Pilot Examiner. His commercial and international

flying experience includes flying a LearJet25 for a Medevac operation, a Cessna Citation jet for a private owner; and a Challenger 604 jet as Captain.

This promises to be an informative evening and it is open to anyone who is interested - you need not be a COPA member to attend. Be at the VFC lounge, April 7, 1900.

Fly-Out Bug Update

Encouraged by the success of the February flyout to Courtenay, Ian Coneybeer organized another outing to Gillies Bay on Saturday, March 21st. After a lot of rainy, marginal VFR weather, Mother Nature cooperated with a sunny day for the less-than-one-hour flight to CYGB. Ian arranged transportation from the airstrip to the Ravenous Raven, a well-known and popular lodge on Texada Island. A good time was had by all with the great weather, beautiful runway, good food. Does it get any better? The next flyout will take place Sunday, April 12. We will be taking off from Victoria, flying over Skagit Valley during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival then having lunch at Boundary Bay and coming back to Victoria. We will not be landing in the US, so no Customs procedures are required although we will be flying in US airspace on a Canadian Flight Plan. We will get more clarification from VFC CFI Graham Palmer to make sure we are all following regulations.

Naomi Carlow Needs a New Liver - You Can Help!Naomi Carlow is the granddaughter of Shawn and Debbie Carlow. Shawn is a club member (since 2001). She is also the niece of Mat Carlow who was an AME at the flying club for 4 years. VFC is a family, and family steps up when needed. Please, let’s all do what we can to help our fellow club member and his family.

Naomi Carlow (now 5 months old) was born with bilary atresia, a life threatening liver condition in which the bile ducts inside or outside the liver do not have normal openings, causing bile to become trapped, build up and cause liver damage.

A 5 hour operation called a Kasai procedure was performed on Naomi at 5 weeks of age, using a part of her small intestine to replace the bile duct,

however it was not successful. Doctors have advised that she requires a liver transplant, and that it will be conducted in Edmonton. The immediate family must remain there for a minimum of three months during the recovery process, as well as make trips pre and post-surgery for evaluations.

The extended family of Naomi is raising funds to help with the non-medical expenses such as travel, accommodation, meals and the continued expenses for their home in Lake Cowichan, and are asking for your help.Donations can be made:
