Kerry’s Korner

We at Burton believe that God is so BIG; it takes many denominations to worship Him. In reality, multiple denominations should serve as a testimony to the greatness of our God. Unfortunately, the differences in our denominations can bring strife rather than glory to God We believe that at these times of strife, God cries. We believe that all the denominations that adhere to the Apostle’s and Nicene Creed are blessed, inspired, and formed by God. Therefore, will be celebrating the various denominations within Christianity with a sermon series called: Christianity’s Family Tree.

This sermon series examines eight different Christian denominations and faith traditions: Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Lutheranism, Presbyterianism, Anglicanism (Episcopal), Baptists, Pentecostalism, and Methodism. For each one, we will provide a brief history, outline major beliefs, and describe some things we can learn from the traditions of those denominations to strengthen our own Christian faith.

We hope you and your family will join us for this sermon series!

If you are interested in participating, please call Jo Ann Waits at 853-9879 or Alberta Albury at 852-5638. All ladies are invited to attend.

Prayer Shawl MinistryOne of the most popular ministries we have at Burton is our Prayer Shawl Ministry. Members knit or crochet shawls and during both Sunday morning services members of the congregation pray over these shawls. They are then given to people as a source of comfort to help them during times of need; sometimes this is for physical sickness, surgeries, or emotion turmoil in their lives. Thanks to all who participate in this important ministry. We hope you will join us on Thursdays in the Joy Classroom at 7:00 pm. For more information, call Virginia at 852-7757.

The breakfast is prepared or bought by the men of the church or one of the ladies in the “auxiliary group.” Even if you do not want to eat, the meetings are worthwhile because we share prayer requests and discuss relevant issues. Pastor Kerry plans the topics and is an excellent leader who encourages group members to learn from each other. Please join us!

Meet Burton’s New College Ministry CoordinatorRuth and Harry Forgan who have served the last four years are very appreciative of the support and blessings of the congregation during their tenure. A new leader for Burton’s college student ministry is Barbara Koch (pronounced “Cook”). We are excited to have Barbara assume the leadership for the undergraduate college students who are members of Burton or have parents and/or grandparents who attend Burton. Please read the introductory message and contact information for Barbara. If you are a college student in Burton’s ministry now, please inform Barbara of any changes in your address for the Fall Semester.

Introduction

Hi. My name is Barbara Koch.  In September I will be taking over Burton’s college ministry from Ruth and Harry Forgan.  Recently, I joined Burton United Methodist Church since I am now spending more than 6 months of the year in Islamorada. The rest of the year I spend at a cottage in New York on Lake Erie. When I lived full time in New York, I taught college for a few years as well as spending 17 years in youth ministry, primarily doing work camps in Appalachia.  I have always enjoyed young people of all ages and I am looking forward to this opportunity to be involved with college students through Burton’s outreach. You can contact me from the end of October to beginning of May at 88181 Old Highway, Unit C-31, Islamorada, FL 33036. From the beginning of May to end of October, contact me at 9232 Lakeside Road, Angola, NY 14006. I can also be reached by cell phone, 716-913-1061 or by email at [email protected] luck with your end of semester activities.Barbara Koch

Thank YouOn behalf of Carol Albury Johnson, Sue Peacock, and myself, we want to thank you for your overwhelming support of our “Lent In A Bag” fundraiser. Easter EggsDear Pastor Kerry,Yep.  It's true.  As I mentioned to you this Sunday, Burton's Easter eggs brought me into the church.I hadn't attended church regularly for a long time.  A really long time.  Okay.  Decades, actually.  Now I attend regularly when I am in Tavernier.  Here's why:

As snow birds here in Tavernier, my husband and I passed Burton on several Easters on our way to buy Sunday papers at the Circle K.  Each of those Easter Sundays I was always impressed and delighted to see the thousands of Easter Eggs awaiting the children.  I thought each time there had to be some pretty special people in the church to do such a joyous thing for the young of our community.   So--two years ago I came to the church service the week after Easter.  The friendly pre-service din told me I was in the right place even before the service began.  Add chocolate to that and I was hooked.

Obviously you and your mission-oriented Burton members didn't have the casual passerby in mind when they put out the Easter Eggs, but, hey, consider it a cool way to multi-task.I could write more about what I like about Burton, but I have three bags of Easter eggs to stuff, so that will have to wait.Sandra Michaels

They will be looking to collect information such as your Keys address, as well as your Northern address if you are one of our 50/50 attendees, telephone number, and email address. If you are currently not in our database but would like to be, or if your contact information has changed, please contact Edna by email at [email protected] or by phone at 305-451-3753 and provide her with your current contact information. We want our database to include not only members of Burton but also those that are active in our church and those that attend Burton services.

Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed (dV8) by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is – his good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Our youth group is open to all adolescents in grades 6 through 12. You do not have to be a member of Burton to attend and friends are always welcome. As a matter of fact…we encourage our youth to BARF at every event. (Bring a Real Friend). Our normal dV8 events are Sundays from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm (with exceptions for special events which will be advertised in advance) at “The Place” a.k.a. the youth room of the education building.

April 5 (No dV8) – We will be celebrating the Easter Festival from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.

April 12 (5:00 pm to 7:00 pm) – Murder in the Dark: This one is a Burton Favorite. This game is a combination of Tag, Hide & Seek, and Clue. You have to bring your detective skills to this one to survive. With this game, the more people the more funner (yes, I know that is not a real word…but I like it!). So bring as many friends as possible so that you may murder them.

April 19 (5:00 pm to 7:00 pm) – The Hardest: We will be listening to a song by Colton Dixon titled “More of You” and playing a game called “The Hardest.” The video and the game address the cost of discipleship.

April 26 (3:00 pm to 5:00 pm) – Trust Fall and Much More: We will be participating in various games that require extreme team work to accomplish successfully. Your mental and physical powers will be tested in a most excellent way. Girls, please do not wear a skirt to this event because it will make it difficult to participate in some of the activities. Guys, please do not wear any kilts because they are just plan ugly and it will also make it difficult to participate in some of the activities. We will also end the day with a trust fall into the arms of fellow youth and adults.

Airsoft GamesOur dV8 youth group has resumed playing airsoft on specific Sundays of the month. Those wanting to play are encouraged to show up at 3:30 pm on specified Sundays wearing long sleeved clothing and pants. We will be dividing up into two teams: Red Dawn and Team America. Youth can bring their own guns and we have some extras that we can supply for those that do not have their own. Also, youth are not allowed to play without eye protection gear. For the month of March, the youth will be playing Airsoft on April 12, 19, and 26.
