say they need to learn more, and still others
might say that they need more life experience
before they could be considered wise.
I will tell you though, that when push
comes to shove, these young men are wise;
especially in the way Jesus describes people
who are wise. Out of all the things we did on
the trip, there were a couple of things that
were most memorable. When I asked the
guys what the most memorable part of the trip
was; the first thing that was brought up was
when we packed enough food to feed 61
children for an entire year. Let that sink in for
a moment; it wasn’t the Mall of America, it
wasn’t which girl was cutest, and it wasn’t
about any of the other places we went to…it
was packing enough food to feed 61 children
for the year.
Even in the midst of all the
excitement, there were moments throughout
the event where these young men were able to
sit and experience who God was. They
experienced God through the food packing,
the speaker, and even through my own story
that I shared with them. These young men
were able to see what it’s like to build their
house on the rock…and hopefully they will
remain standing when the storms come.
You see, that’s the other part of this
passage that Tiger McLuen shared with us.
That for both the wise and the foolish builders
the storms came, the rain fell, and the winds
blew hard. And at the end of the day, the only
Matthew 7:24-25: 24
“Therefore
everyone who hears these words of mine
and puts them into practice is like a wise
man who built his house on the rock. 25
The rain came down, the streams rose,
and the winds blew and beat against that
house; yet it did not fall, because it had
its foundation on the rock.”
Well I just got back from a great trip
to Youth Encounter in Bloomington, MN
with the confirmation students. We had six
students attend this year…all boys. There is
only so much I can say about the event, and
that doesn’t even break through the surface of
the experiences we had. One of the passages
that the main speaker Tiger McLuen shared
with us is this one about building your house
upon a rock. In this story that Jesus tells, the
only difference between the two builders is
that one is wise and one is foolish. The wise
one builds his house upon the rock and the
foolish one builds it in the sand.
On our trip, I had a van full of teenage
boys, and most people would look at them
and call them foolish. I mean these are the
types of guys that still laugh at farts, are
anticipating the trip to Mall of America over
anything else, would rather talk about girls
than talk about God (or anything else for that
matter), and really wanted to see how many
people could fit in the revolving door. I mean
at first glance, wise is not the first word that
would come to mind. Some would attribute it
to needing to be more mature, others would

amazing in even something so ordinary? Where
have you seen God do the extraordinary? These
are the things that strengthen our faith; these are
the things that help us to build our lives on the
rock. Share these experiences, talk about them,
and hold onto them. Pray for our confirmation
students that they do the same. So that when the
storms of life come and rage (we all know they
will), that we will all be able like the wise man
and cling to the rock and remain standing when
the storm is over.
house that remained standing was the one that was
built on the rock.
All of what we experienced at Youth
Encounter, and any way in which God entered into
the lives of these young men will not keep any of
us out of the storms that this life throws at us. It
will only help us all to endure and to remain
standing even as everything else is crumbling
down around us; only as long as our foundation is
built upon the rock.
