Kindergarten: We learned how to say Buenos Días/Buenas Tardes (Good Morning/Good

Afternoon. We also started learning three emotions feliz (happy), so-

so (así así), and triste (sad). Students also covered four weather terms:

hace sol (sunny), está nublado (cloudy), está nevando (snowing), and

está lloviendo (raining).

1st Grade: We learned about emotions, feliz (happy), so-so (así así), triste (sad), cansado (tired),

enojado (mad), and enfermo (sick). We also practiced weather terms: hace sol (sunny), está

nublado (cloudy), está nevando (snowing), está lloviendo (raining), hay tormenta (stormy), and

hace viento (windy). In addition, we learned about the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

2nd Grade: This month, we started learning the Spanish alphabet. We also

started practicing counting by 10’s up to 100, instead of just up to 60. We

also reviewed telling time to the hour in Spanish.

3rd and 4th Grade: This month we reviewed different places in a city, such as: el cine (movie theater), el parque (park), el estadio (stadium), el museo (museum), el teatro (theater), el hotel (hotel, el hospital (hospital), el banco (bank), la oficina de correos (post office), el aeropuerto (airport), la escuela (school), la tienda (store), and el restaurante (restaurant). This month of April, students will be doing “Shield” presentations. If you would like to view an example of this presentation to help you student prepare, please visit the Cedar Rapids Spanish program’s YouTube Channel. We went to The Iowa Children’s Museum in Coralville. Students had the opportunity to explore a variety of materials and take on many

different roles.

A big thank you to the Cedar Rapids

District Foundation for making this trip

possible!

We had a great field trip to Mercy Hospital! The

kids got to see an x-ray machine and x-rays. We

also learned how the pharmacy works, and saw a

robot that counted pills for patients. Finally, we

got to see the kitchen and even got to go in the

walk in refrigerator-it was VERY COLD!

FIRST GRADE

March was an exciting month in

first grade! We had our musical

with the kindergarteners, we built

new creations, and we talked a lot

about graphing. We even got to eat

our graphs!

2nd graders participated in the “Cops ‘N Kids” program. An officer

comes into a classroom to read a story and each

child picks out a book to take home.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from

P.E. NEWS

What a huge success our roller skating unit was! Thank you again parents for sending money for skate rental. The kids had a blast. During the month of April we will be doing a volleyball and tennis unit, two of my favorite sports. In the next couple of weeks I will be sending home permission slips for a running club. Most likely this will take place on Wednesday mornings before school.

Please send your kids to school with tennis shoes on P.E. days.

MESSAGE IN A MINUTE FROM THE

TAYLOR LIBRARY!

Discovery Learning at its Best! Research going on at all levels!!

K-Our youngest learners are exploring the topic of plants, in the

classroom and in the library! We are practicing picking out big ideas

and details. The kindergarteners are also being introduced to our

awesome GWAEA databases for great nonfiction information!

1st-We are working on a collaborative unit on space. In the library we

are reinforcing skills being taught in the classroom such as

comprehension, sequencing and re-telling as we read various books

and databases. Part of the unit may include pairing up with a 2nd grade

research “expert!”

2nd-5th-The rest of our students are knee-deep in research! They are using note taking skills that we reviewed in class to collect information from print and digital resources. Students in 2nd and 3rd grade are keeping track of their resources in the form of a bibliography chart while 4th and 5th graders are using either the EasyBib website or a feature right in Microsoft Word. Fifth graders (and some 4th graders) are using Canvas, an online classroom platform, to work on lessons and submit assignments. They seem to like this technological aspect of our project!

COUNSELOR CORNER

It’s Canstruction time again!

Taylor will participating for 6th time in Canstruction.

Canstruction is a competition and service project to gather

donated cans for the HACAP food shelf. A select group of

5th graders will be designing a structure that will be

displayed at Lindale mall on April 18th.

Our goal is to raise over 2,000 cans. Our previous record of

cans was 1,650. We are asking for any cans of food you can

donate.

Classrooms will be holding competitions the weeks of April 6th

& April 13th. Each week the winning classroom will get an

extra recess and a special snack.
