Catholic universities respond to Pope Francis’s encyclicalLeAdeRs oF cAthoLIc universities converge in the 2016 Association of catholic Universities of the Philippines (AcUP) National conference held last January 21 to 22 in tagbilaran city, Bohol to call for action to fight climate change.

the assembly which banners the theme “Laudato si: Pope Francis’ encyclical on the care for our common home and the Response of catholic Universities” is a response to the holy Father’s encyclical letter released in June 2015.

“we need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all. the worldwide ecological movement has already made considerable progress and led to the establishment of numerous organizations committed to raising awareness of these challenges. Regrettably, many efforts to seek concrete solutions to the environmental crisis have proved ineffective, not only because of powerful opposition but also because of a more general lack of interest,” said Pope Francis in the document.

As such, in his keynote address, Rev. Fr. John Leydon, mssc, 2014 Philippine co-convenor on Global catholic climate movement, enlightened the delegates of AcUP

member universities on the message of Laudato si and the actions the Philippine catholic universities can do to resolve the global issue.

Philippine Institue of Volcanology and seismology (PhIVoLcs) director, dr. Renato U. solidum, Jr. discussed about risk reduction of the Philippine environmental crisis while world wildlife Fund (wwF) for Nature Philippines climate change and energy Programme head Atty. Angela consuelo Ibay presented a note from the 2015 Paris sustainable Innovation forum.

ABs-cBN Foundation managing director, ms. Gina Lopez; Aksyon Klima Pilipinas National coordinator, mr. Ruel cabile; climate change commission Information commission Information Officer, Ms. Donna Sanidad; ministry on ecology of the Archdiocese of manila executive director, Rev. Fr. Benny tuazon; and ms. hyacinth suarez of holy Name University tackled their own multi-sectoral initiatives to encourage delegates to care for our common home.

Administrators and student leaders from 34 member universities had simultaneous sessions on climate change on the second day of the event.

A total of 5,270 online registrants participated in the annual sports-cum-fundraising event intended

to sponsor the various scholarship programs the University extends to deserving students.

wIth the PURPose of empowering students and administrators towards educational and institutional success, Adamson University student Government (AUsG) organized an event titled “campus talk” held last February 5 at the oZ AVR.

Present in the event were heads and representatives of the relevant offices in the University, addressing the concerns of the student body. According to the AUsG Assistance and Information desk, most of the concerns are about physical facilities, general services, school policies and regulations.

Also in the event was the University President Fr. marcelo V. manimtim, c.m. who quoted sarah Beeny in his opening remarks, “Positive things happen to positive people.” Fr. manimtim believes that the event is one of the effective ways to improve the University, “I look to this campus talk as our effort to help each other, if

not totally eliminate, at least lessen our blind sights.”

engr. Fernando constantino, the director of Physical Facilities and General Services Office (PFGso), brought the whole team under his supervision; mr. methusalem manabat, head of housekeeping, engr. Jay Jordan Aranzado, head of mechanical works, and Archt. daniel mergal head of civil works. Along with them was the head of campus security and safety (css),

like air conditioners, projectors and chairs were some of the identified facilities that are not in good condition. According to engr. constantino, they have been evaluating the classrooms.

“During the first part of the school semester, we bought new units of air conditioners. we noted which units were needed to be replaced and units to be repaired. As for the

chairs, we are also doing classroom maintenance,” noted engr. constantino.

however, engr. Lomotan clarified that the projectors which are not functioning don’t fall under their management. Added engr. Lomotan, “For your information, the PFGso only facilitated the installation of the brackets. the concerns regarding projectors shall be addressed by your respective

magkaroon ng question ang executive branch katulad ng kung paano makakapagconduct ng activities, the possible remedy is to compel each organization to recommend a volunteer as usher or usherette for the activities of the executive branch,” mr. Fajardo added.

he noted that in a democratic student Government, there will still be Recognized student organizations (RSO) officers, but there will then be the presence of political parties. “As long as qualified tumakbo ang isang estudyante, makakatakbo siya para sa student Government,” noted mr. Fajardo.

mr. Fajardo also stated that once the reform takes place, AUsG representatives will then be part of LcL, following again the system of the Philippine government’s house of Representatives.

II. Presidential and Vice Presidential Mock Elections

the tandem of senators miriam defensor-santiago and Bongbong marcos prevailed in the Presidential and Vice Presidential mock elections.

santiago acquired the highest percentage of votes among the candidates garnering 64.06% of 1, 524 respondents, while her running mate gained 46.35%, defeating the other five vice presidential aspirants.

Atty. sherwin t. de Peralta, a graduate of Ateneo

de manila University with a master of Arts in Political science major in Global Politics, shared his thoughts regarding the results. he has been teaching for 20 years and is currently a faculty member of Adamson University social science department.

Atty. de Peralta explained why santiago has consistently topped polls administered by several universities, “many students can identify with her; she’s very combative and articulate. she also attracts students because of her approach – sense of humor, jokes, and even hugot lines.”

davao city mayor Rodrigo duterte ranked second in the survey (28.39%). he is followed by senator Grace Poe (3.65%), then mar Roxas (2.08%). the incumbent Vice President Jejomar Binay got the least number of votes (1.82%).

But the result of AdU mock elections and other University-wide polls do not reflect the outcome of other surveys supervised by research institutions like social weather stations and Pulse Asia. Atty. de Peralta shared, “If we are to observe the results of the surveys conducted by such institutions, santiago is lagging behind while Binay succeeds.”

Atty. de Peralta said that santiago is deemed incapable of leading the country by ordinary Filipino citizens because of her failing health, “Voters apparently think that she can’t withstand the rigors of presidency.” he added

that another probable cause is that she can’t bankroll a nationwide campaign.

Binay, on the other hand, targets the lower classes of society. “Unfortunately, the e and F classes are not well-informed; they don’t involve themselves in discerning as to who the right candidate is. Binay, contradictorily, does not appeal to millennials because you are more aware.”

As far as Vice Presidential results are concerned, Atty. de Peralta admitted that he was surprised about the triumph of Bongbong marcos in the survey, “maybe students see him as a qualified leader, but I am honestly saddened because you are most definitely not familiar with what happened during the martial Law, during the presidency of his father.”

Atty. de Peralta further lamented that the generation today might have forgotten the lessons of edsA People Power, though he also took into consideration the evident reasons why marcos leads the poll. “First, he has the solid-North vote. Also, in terms of achievements, as the former governor and congressman of Ilocos Norte, and now as a senator, he is doing well.”

the member of the house of Representatives from camarines sur's third district, Leni Robredo ranked second (18.23%), followed by senators Alan Peter cayetano (17.19%), chiz escudero (14.32%), Antonio trillanes IV (2.86%) and Gringo honasan (1.04%).

In line with AdU mock

elections results, other social research institutions show that trillanes and honasan are the candidates who are a hard sell. “they are not popular. It appears that voters do not prefer former rebel soldiers who turned politicians,” Atty. de Peralta explained.

this AdU mock elections, according to Atty. de Peralta, is in any way related to Adamson University student Government, “the reality in our University’s student Government might be correlated to our national government – because then again, student leaders look up to our national leaders.”

he noted that the results seemed to reflect Adamson University as a whole. “I could say that Adamsonians are well-educated, they know what they want for our society,” Atty. de Peralta said.

Quoting a Philosopher, Atty. de Peralta stressed that “we deserve the government we have.” he said that since we operate under a democratic set-up, whether we personally want the next leaders or not, we have to practice acceptance, “It’s crucial, we can’t afford to elect the wrong President and Vice President because it’s too costly for us, especially for the new generation.”

the 90-day campaign period for candidates has already started. the 2016 National elections will be held on may 9.

246TH NROTC-AdU is 1st runner up

the NAVAL Rotc UNIt of Adamson University has proven itself again, bagging the first runner-up award in LAGtI 2016.

Furthermore, the 246th NRotc-AdU won several individual awards during the competition: Best in

semaphore (Receiving and sending), Best in weapons (Practical), Best in small Unit tactics, Best in Flag and Penance, and Best in ceremonial Parade.

Adamson’s performance was an improvement compared to last year’s

which finished 2nd runner up overall and bagged the Best in Knot tying individual award.

“It came as a surprise,” said Cadet Officer tamondong when asked regarding their victory.

she explained that they have undergone several

struggles because of lack of time preparing even though they were already informed of its date two weeks prior to the competition.

In compensation, they maximized their resources and their remaining time by conducting the special Unit’s lectures inside the department of Naval Science and Tactics office. they also made the training a mandatory requirement for the cadets. cadet Officer Tamondong also noted that the combined effort of the officers and the cadets enabled them to improve their rankings.

“we are functioning more like a family now,” confided Tamondong, emphasizing the importance of a harmonious relationship between the officers and the Rotc cadets.

the 246th NRotc-AdU was the 3rd Rotc Unit established in the country and was founded on April 16, 1949.

coLLeGe oF education and Liberal Arts (ceLA), for the third consecutive time, secures the top spot for the canticle choralefest 2016 held last February 18, at the st. therese chapel.

ceLA bested six other ensembles – college of science, college of Business Administration, college of Architecture, college of engineering, college of Pharmacy, and the Basic education department. each group had to perform their rendition of “christ in Us, the hope of Glory” (2016 International eucharistic and marian theme) and “humayo at Ipagbunyi” (2005 eucharistic and marian year theme).

Basic education department and college of Pharmacy landed at second and third place, respectively.

AImING to dIscUss economic concerns, the Adamson University Business economics society (AdUBes) conducted its 5th economic conference with the theme “economics and Politics towards Good Governance,” held at the st theater last January 20, 2016.

ms. melissa Grace dizon-dulalia, an investment practitioner and the first speaker of the event, tackled the importance of tourism and its vital role in building a stronger economy. she said that the country, a predominantly catholic and the largest christian nation in Asia, is experiencing a vantage in Religious tourism.

“with a strong devotion and visible faith, these could attract local and foreign tourists which would help the local tourism industry to be healthy. In effect, this becomes beneficial for the economy,” ms. dizon-dulalia added.

Next to ms. dizon was ms. christine Ng, a graduate of de Lasalle-college of st. Benilde. ms. Ng shared her journey from her humble beginnings as a merchandise manager up to the success of her self-owned businesses today, the mario d’ Boro and the cardams. she stressed the importance of patronizing our local products which is becoming a serious struggle for aspiring Filipino entrepreneurs.

the highlight of the

event is the presence of Princess Jacel Kiram, the Princess of sulu. Princess Kiram is among the senatorial bets of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). she raised the importance of our country’s sovereignty over its territories. her primary concern is the territorial dispute between Philippines and malaysia over sabah. Princess Kiram lamented the loss of sabah from the Philippine government. According to her, Malaysia is benefiting from sabah’s resources with a yearly figure of 72 billion dollars, equivalent to 23% of the total GdP of malaysia. If converted to our currency, we are losing trillions of pesos yearly. she promised to have sabah returned for and to the Filipino people if elected as senator, given the fact that the Philippines has righteous claims on sabah.

For the last part of the forum, mr. Lloyd Luna, a multi-awarded motivational speaker lightened up the atmosphere. he reminded everyone of the importance of faith and values when dealing with serious matters, encouraging the rest to be courageous in taking risk on life choices.

AdU finishes second in 9th SMEC Ethics BowlthRee thIRd yeAR Political science students have brought yet another achievement for Adamson University as they emerged first runner-up in the 9th south manila education consortium (smec) ethics Bowl held at the Jose P. Laurel hall of Freedom in Lyceum of the Philippines U n i v e r s i t y - m a n i l a (LPU) last February 19.

the representatives of Adamson for this year’s smec ethics Bowl were mark diego Puse, Alan christopher oliva, and Krippe Anthony Ramos.

Aside from clinching second place, AdU also earned an individual award courtesy of mr. Ramos when he was declared the team’s Best speaker for the elimination Round.

despite being aware that it is the first time to award the best speakers from each team, mr. Ramos admitted that it was not the team’s

priority to get that award and neither did he expect to win it.

“our focus is to advance to the finals and give justice to the trust of the people supporting us from the very start of this ethics Bowl journey. Pero noong naglakad na ako papunta sa stage, nag-thank you na ako kay God. sabi ko kasi sa prayers ko noon, kung maging best speaker ako, bonus na lang ‘yon. mas gusto kong manalo kami as a team since ‘yon naman ang mahalaga,” mr. Ramos said.

however, they had to bear the pressure of having to live up to high expectations and making sure the trophy remains in san marcelino since last year’s ethics Bowl champions were Adamsonians as well. Because of this, Ramos conceded that misunderstandings and conflicts were inevitable

dividing them in accordance to their respective programs, opening their activities with each other throughout the whole year. he noted that it is important for schools to have constant communication with each other so as to fortify a network among smec students.

on the subject of being an effective leader, he stated that his leadership has always been rooted in initiating cooperation. “when it comes

to effectiveness, I would say that when it comes to the ranking, modesty aside, it is effective because we ranked first [in the mid-year evaluation].” he added though that ranking is not the sole factor in determining the efficiency of the leadership style. he said that he would leave the criticisms to his officers of his headship.

Raising the issue regarding the current system of the University’s student

Government, he reiterates the significance of the system to become democratic. “there are ongoing talks about making the elections of the student Government to be popular or democratic. I was just informed that they are making a special committee in the determination of having a democratic election. Personally, I want it to happen because it involves everyone. Ang problema kasi sa atin, maraming

students na apathetic.”he said that one of the

factors why students are apathetic is because they are not involved in any way. he stated, “some students think that the officers are just placed there to lead them but not necessarily represent their views or grievances. It would greatly help to have a student Government elected popularly by students.”

THE EDITORIAL BOARD 2015-2016

Expecting a better AUSG don’t be surprised:

our community already has a new set of executive officers who will be handling the Adamson University student Government (AUsG) for Academic year 2016-2017. the miting de avance and the election were done last April 12, 2016.

In the University-wide survey conducted by the Adamson chronicle last February 20-26, 2016, 1,280 over 1,524 students were in favor of changing the government form of

the AUsG from its current Parliamentary system into a democratic system with direct voting. meaning, majority of the students do not like the current system of the student government.

Although a resolution about the electoral reform (or democratization) of the AUsG has already been passed by the Legislative council of Leaders (LcL), the Office for Student Affairs (osA) seems passive about it. so, no change in the system has been done.

with that in mind, some students will perhaps mock the AUsG of being active only during concerts and sports festivals. some may be sarcastic about its existence in the University. that has been a stigma, and a prejudice as the semester begins.

the Adamson chronicle hopes for the new set of AUSG officers to do better in creating a healthy, energetic, creative, and prosperous environment for the students. Given the many critics and detractors of the supreme

student government, it has to develop a certain charisma that can get the attention, respect, and support of the student-body. It has to raise the school spirit through effective events in the University. It has to embody the ideal entity that fights for the rights of the students. It doesn’t have to impress the students. what’s more important is for it to leave a legacy, holistically teaching Adamson of the necessary values that could touch our lives.

It’s not all about winning“experience is the best

teacher” - the phrase sounds cliché, but it has made an impact on the development of the broadsheet of the Autonomous and Official student Publication of Adamson University.

during the 4th National campus Press Awards at the University of st. La salle - Bacolod last February 2015, the Adamson chronicle was awarded 3rd in the Best Literary Folio category. It’s the only award we received, but was a big thing considering that the scope of the award-giving body was national. sitting next to our table were delegates from silliman University and de La salle schools. Seeing their certificates pile-up, I realized we had a lot of catching-up to do.

Prior to that event, we confidently had sent three outputs: sinag, our official magazine, for Best in Magazine category; [H]unos, our official literary folio, for Best in Literary Folio category; and our Nov-dec 2014 Broadsheet for Best in Newspaper

category. But after the awarding ceremony, I had this vision of having to better the Adamson chronicle in the next academic year.

First semester of the school year 2015-2016, we’ve made some changes in our broadsheet. As an addition to the main sections such as News, editorial, opinion, Features, Literary, and sports, we have introduced Photography, Art, and Lampoon sections that cover the respective lines of interest of the students. we’ve also changed the name of the supplementary section Fun Page to humor. these changes would serve as a satisfactory improvement in our broadsheet.

when our former editor-in-chief Franz Jared enriquez graduated, I humbly succeeded his position. then, I started to work with our unprecedented, 36-page december 2015 broadsheet. that output was made up of more or less 24 sub-sections grouped respectively in 6 main sections that were folded separately: the main, the human Interest,

the Arts and Letters, the science and technology, the entertainment, and the Lampoon. the Adamson chronicle has received a lot of good feedbacks from the students, faculty, admins. But more importantly, it has caused massive developments in the systems of some offices, persons in the University.

we have sent that broadsheet as an entry for Best in Newspaper category in the recently-concluded 5th National campus Press Awards in Bacolod. during the event, I was more confident with our output this time than last year’s. But I knew the feeling of umasang manalo pero bigo pala. so I didn’t expect to get anything from four major awards. In the Best in magazine and Best in Literary Folio categories, the Adamson chronicle was not called. I felt bad for our [H]unos Vol. 2. But surprisingly, the Publication was awarded FIRst in the Best in editorial category. that editorial was about dealing with security guards

and I was the one who wrote it. so, I took pride standing beside the other delegates to receive the award at the stage. I felt I have just bested the other editors. that moment, I thought of the possibility of winning the most anticipated award. And I was (slightly) right, the Publication placed thIRd in the Best Newspaper category.

In a national arena, it has a small possibility to be recognized by the other student publications, professionals, and media practitioners. those humbling awards would definitely be a catalyst to strive better in informing, inspiring, and influencing the Adamson community. those should be a testament that the Adamson chronicle could meet the general standards for a campus paper.

may is getting closer than we want it to be, and everyone is (surprise, surprise) busy talking about the presidential candidate they’re going to vote for.

I find it funny how politics only get tackled when it has ‘vote wisely’ written all over it. Because really, once we have stopped enclosing ourselves in the idea that it only resides inside the walls of malacañang, we become less counterproductive.

On the image of EDSAPolitics takes the form of

neglect in edsA Revolution. From a once collective

action of the masses to overthrow a dictator, edsA has now become nothing else but a memory – just like all the people who have risked their lives in pursuit of bringing out the truth within the lies.

And what is left of us? we have become a generation of cubs who cling on the mouths of lions in search of political salvation. we let them hold us around by the scruff of our necks for we have become weary, angered, and numb from our past predators. In our

first chance for revenge, we are ready to gamble our freedom so as to let a vulture reign in our pride.

Forget the yellow laces, and remember the red from the hundreds of Filipinos who have died for this cause. Let us not sacrifice more blood for that slim chance of a greener tomorrow. we are better than that. I still believe we are.

On the struggle for gender/sex equality

Politics takes the form of bigotry in the issue of gender equality.

And in effect is an abuse of respectability in politics. with Pacquiao’s statement regarding LGBts comes the confirmation: our culture has commoditized their narrative so diminutive that their identity has become a joke, making the problem integral.

this is an issue of civil and human rights – how the line on the morality of fundamental human values is becoming blurred each passing day. we only take into account the things convenient to us, the things comfortable to our skin.

we have turned our country into a playground. christian fundamentalists are toy gunning us with Leviticus verses, turning the nation into a breeding ground of bigotry and ignorance. And here we are, continuously policing LGBts just because we cannot fully accept their presence in our unfortunate non-secularist community.

On the procurement of justice

Politics takes the form of incompetence in seeking justice.

case in point is the mamasapano massacre – a horrific bloodbath of 44 special Action Force (sAF) troopers of the Philippine National Police (PNP). the real man slaughter though is how, after a year, progress in the case is still nowhere to be found.

we have become a country where citizens are treated as wear-and-tear products, obsolete in the eyes of government officials.

more than just addressing the hilarity of the justice system in the Philippines, I think it is safe

to say that this is also about the illustration of inhumanity present in the country. In the midst of finding solutions, we create more problems in the process, politicking when we could have used all these time and resources to a better purpose.

--the thing is, when you

detach yourself from political issues, you also detach yourself from the core of civilization. every time you turn a blind eye from politics, you are stepping away from your responsibility as a citizen of a third-world country. you are giving the people in power the authority of your right of expressing and thinking for yourself.

Learn from the drawbacks in our history. do not listen to people who shame you for caring about the current political landscape in our country.

you are more than just a pawn in their chess game. you are an integral part of the board.

“More Shallow”

there was a student who took a midterm exam on a science subject. he was unsure about the two choices - letters A and B. he chose B because he believed that letter B stands for best and that was his gut answer. he then accidentally peeked at his seatmate’s paper, and he saw the letter A written beside the same item. he struggled. he erased his answer and went for A. why? well, he didn’t exactly know.

Last January 21 to 23 year 2016, together with some members of the Adamson chronicle and Adamson University student Government, I went to Bohol to attend the climate change conference spearheaded by the Association of catholic Universities of the Philippines. during the second day of the conference, there was a team-building activity by which we were divided into several groups. during the group discussion, there was a time that we had to decide on a group name. our group facilitator asked us to close our eyes as we would vote for our desired group name. After the voting, she explained that the reason for that drill was to ensure that we would make our decision solely by virtue of our free will and not by the others’ decision - the so-called power of suggestion. she also said that in a voting situation like this, students tend to vote for the option chosen by their friends or by the majority of the students.

that was the time that I started to realize that as much as I want to deny it, as much as I want to convincemyself that I am a person of my own decisions and ideals, I’m still merely a slave of this power of suggestion; from deciding what should be my meal when eating on a fast food chain with my friends, to deciding whether the answer to a specific item is true or false.

the power of suggestion can act on us in several ways. It can influence us by the direct suggestion from the people around us like

asking them what to get for lunch which indirectly influences us by their actions.

this power is not entirely bad though. there is the reason why such exists. this concept helps us to achieve uniformity among ourselves. But what if diversity and not uniformity is what we need?

we know the saying “No man is an Island.” of course, no one really is. there are several points in life when we need the suggestion of the people around us to make the best decision about a tough situation. But when we become over-reliant to this power, when we abuse this power without taking responsibility at all, that’s when the power of suggestion becomes undesirable.

At this very crucial time, we should not be very dependent on this outside force. we should now practice free will to enlighten us from all dogmatic teachings and beliefs of the world. we should make a stand on what we believe. In may, for example, we will have to shade an ellipse that will play a vital role in determining our country’s future. And hopefully by that time, we are no longer clouded by outside suggestions by various tV ads, by the people around us, by the money being offered to us, and by the bandwagon. we should cast our vote without any outside force influencing us. We should vote solely because of our preference. If there’s a time to overcome the power of suggestion, now would be it. sometimes, it wouldn’t hurt to believe in yourself. you are your own person, aren’t you? then, it is about time to prove that.

P.s. Remember the student from the introduction? well, that’s me. After the papers were checked, the answer was B.

different competitions is not all about winning, but it’s also about realizing and improving something. It gives us a wider perspective in mastering our own craft. If we will only keep our outputs in our closet, we put ourselves away in the avenue of opportunities and knowledge. exposing ourselves externally will push us to strive better and do more.

thus I reckon,

experience might not necessarily be the best teacher, but it almost always results in the most enduring lessons - rather than simply repeating the bad or uncompetitive ways ad nauseum.

with another experiences and achievements that the Publication has recently acquired, let’s expect something even better this school year 2016-2017.

of the Philippines, Article III, section 14, Paragraph 2 na “In all criminal prosecution, the accused shall be presumed innocent until the contrary is proved.”

You are Your Own Person

the state of the comfort rooms was also raised: dirty vandals, doors with no lock, lack of water supply and clogged toilet bowls. engr. constantino said that they have been focusing on repainting and retouching the vandalisms, and have already started renovating the cRs, “we began with some cRs along st, then we followed it with the cRs of Basic education department, JP and FRc. then come this summer, our priority is cs, sV and oZ.”

having mentioned the oZ building, the students remain disconcerted about the non-utilization of the elevator. engr. constantino explained that there has been an on-going rehabilitation, but was needed to be postponed. “Last october, huminto iyong rehabilitation kasi there was continuous water seeping out of the elevator pit. After the problem gets addressed, the rehabilitation shall continue,” he said.

Another problem which was tackled is the odorous smell of estero de Balete. engr. constantino said that they have already sought help from some Recognized student organizations (Rsos) to assist the assigned personnel in a periodic clean-up drive.

coordinating body for catholic universities in the Philippines committed to promote the quality of education and to advance the cause of catholic education. currently, it is led by Adamson University President, Rev. Fr. marcelo V. manimtim, c.m. as its president.

with the assembly, the AcUP takes the commitment, as christians, to come together and take charge of this home which has been entrusted to us and responds to the Pope’s appeal to seek a sustainable and integral development in shaping the future of our planet.

to end his team’s discussion, engr. constantino wanted everyone to take part in improving the physical facilities of the university. “we are branded as the worst office, ok lang sa akin ‘yan, we take it as a constructive criticism. we’ll try to improve, para sa inyong lahat. sa akin lang, tulungan niyo rin sana kami,” he concluded.

Following PFGso was the head of Information and technology center (Itc), mr. marcelo Rosario. he addressed the complaints about slow internet connection and said that his department is in the process of continuous upgrade, “Ang dati nating wi-fi connection only caters to 60 users per access point. Now, 100 users are allowed.”

ms. Liza Palileo, head of students Account under

Finance department, then took the floor to discuss matters concerning our down payment. she was with the University Registrar ms. emilia Vicencio who focused on issues that seem inevitable during enrolment period. “we also need your cooperation, please follow the procedures and the deadlines,” ms. Vicencio reminded.

Director of Office for student Affairs (osA) Atty. Jan Nelin Navallasca talked about the existing rules in the University: not allowing dyed hair for girls, haircut for boys, uniform policy and dress code, as part of the integral development of the students. “these are a result of years of experience, methods, consultations and observances. As your second parents, we are to make certain policies

whether you are in favor or not,” he remarked.

As to how the University works on the institution’s sustainability assessment, dr. catherine castañeda, Vice President for Academic Affairs, pointed out specific details on what the administrators are doing to fix internal dilemmas of the school.

After every talk, an open forum was conducted to answer queries from the students. Certificates were given to both the speakers and attendees.

mark Valencia, President of AUsG, delivered his closing remarks to conclude the event, giving emphasis on the significance of Campus talk as a collaborative opportunity for students and administrators to achieve the common goal of improving services in the University.

along the way but according to him, it was necessary for the team to come up with the best arguments.

having been informed on the day of the competition that AdU’s first championship in the ethics Bowl was held at the same venue seven years ago also fueled even more the team’s desire to aim for the top spot. moreover, Ramos and his teammates were further motivated by the fact that AdU does not fail to enter the top three for the previous years since its first victory in 2009.

“Inisip namin na

magandang sign ‘yon para sa amin. Inisip din namin noon na wala kaming mukhang maihaharap if hindi kami makalusot for the final round,” recalled mr. Ramos.

their team did get in the top three. Unfortunately, AdU came up short next to LPU’s team which was hailed this year’s champion. coming in third place was st. scholastica’s college.

Initially saddened by their failure to achieve a back-to-back triumph, AdU’s team eventually accepted their loss and acknowledged each other’s efforts for the good

competition they have put up.“wala naman kasi sa

on behalf of the team, Ramos also thanked their coaches Joseph Guillermo and Katrina Pia sales, head coach Frances Pauline Brillantes, and AdU ethics

committee Representative Zaldy dueñas III — all faculty members of AdU’s social sciences department — for their support and commitment.

other participating schools in this year’s smec ethics Bowl — which aims to test students’ logic and reasoning concerning matters of social, moral, and political interest — were LPU, emilio Aguinaldo college, st. scholastica’s college, de La salle University-college of saint Benilde, and st. Paul University.

AdU-Pulitika (President), Karla mae sayen of Rcyc-AdU (Vice President-Internal), Jane Preciado of AdUBes (treasurer), mark daniel Bernales of JPIA (Auditor), and Avegail Guimbangunan of AUmeGA (Public Relations Officer). Christian Dave solis, a 4th year marketing management student and AUsG Representative of Adamson Junior marketing Association (AdJmA), was the only independent candidate, running for the position of PRo.

Incoming AUsG President John Joshua mayuga discussed his platforms for the upcoming academic year: (1) Integration of Vincentian values in student Leadership (2) Promotion and Advancement of students’ Rights and student Representation (3) Review of the AUsG constitution and By-Laws for possible amendments or revision (election of AUsG Representatives, separation of powers, inclusion of foreign students, etc.) (4) Advancement of holistic student development through relevant programs and activities (4m development: makadiyos, makatao, makabayan, makakalikasan) (5) New ways of addressing grievances and concerns (Google forms, college grievances forum)

After the introduction of

the candidates, an open forum was opened for questions regarding the candidates. the open forum was succeeded by a “yes or No” portion whereby candidates were asked a question and they would answer by flashing either of the two options.

concerning the issues of haircut and dress codes, all candidates agreed that osA discipline should not be too strict. Furthermore, all candidates also agreed that an ‘open-door policy’ be implemented in the AUsG office, promoting a more welcoming environment for all students. As for the democratization of AUsG, five of the candidates said ‘yes’ while one candidate said ‘no’. Lastly, when asked whether AUsG should be given an autonomous status, all candidates said ‘no’.

As of Press time, results of the voting process, which was held at the student center, are the following: posts for President, Vice President-Internal, treasurer, and Auditor were all from Padayon Party as there were no other contenders for the aforementioned positions. Posts for Vice President-external and secretary are yet to be appointed. on the other hand, mr. solis bested ms. Guimbangunan for the position of PRo.

the turn-over ceremony will be on April 21, 2016, at the Adamson st theatre.

in sophomore Riflayca Basa as the pitcher. the Adamson offense was still shooting blanks in the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth inning, the two teams traded home runs with each other. By the end of the sixth inning, Adamson’s offense proved to be more explosive as they string together five straight runs and snatched the lead from UP 7-6. sophomore Basa’s pitching were the nail in the coffin as she led Adamson’s defense, defeating the Lady maroons. the victory bought themselves a spot back to the Finals where they eventually faced Ust.

In the Game 1 of the Best-of-three Finals series last march 11, the Lady Falcons, determined to avenge their loss, simply dominated the tigresses. the match ended via mercy-rule with the score of 9-2, making Adamson one win away from the six-peat.

however, the tigresses didn’t go down that easy.

the second game of the Finals was the complete opposite of the first. UST’s offense prevailed over the shaky defense of Adamson, eventually building a 5-0 lead before the sixth inning. the Lady Falcons showed signs of life and scored two homeruns to cut the deficit to three, 5-2, at the bottom

end of the sixth inning. In the seventh and final inning, an error from Ust allowed the Lady Falcons to put together a two-out three-run homerun thanks to a Gelyn Lamata hit, which miraculously tied the game at five all. Adamson was in a position to force an extra inning. however, a mere miscommunication between the Lady Falcons’ defense proved to be fatal as it cost them the Game 2 of the finals. The game ended in favor of Ust, 6-5, which allowed them to set up a winner-take-all match against Adamson.

For the final and the most important match of the season, UST drew first blood as the tigresses punched in two homeruns, 2-0. however, at the bottom of the third inning, the graduating Queeny sabobo was able to

hit one at the plate, which immediately resulted to two homeruns, tying the game at two apiece. At the same inning, another graduating player, Annalie Benjamen, who was struggling in her last few games, delivered for Adamson one final time as she gave Adamson the lead with two homeruns, 4-2. sabobo added another run at the fifth inning and increase their lead, 5-2, as the Adamson was inches away from victory. though Ust managed to score another run, 5-3, Adamson prevented any kind of comebacks from the Ust side as the Lady Falcons went on, completing their “six-peat”.

It was not how anybody would expect how Adamson’s season ended. despite all of the ups and downs, coach santiago

certainly hopes that the team will learn from this season and get better.

“After ng natalo kami, then after ng game namin against UP, yun ang naging motivation namin. sinabi ko sa kanila, ‘it’s not a blessing na natalo tayo sa Ust but it showed us what we could improve,” coach santiago said.

this season was a rollercoaster ride for the whole softball team, and for coach santiago, this is certainly one of the most memorable.

“this is the biggest challenge for me. Unlike sa past five years na nag-champion kami na masasabi kong easy eh. this year, napakahirap ng pinagdaanan namin pero ito na ang pinaka-sweetest victory namin,” said coach santiago.

for the Lady Falcons.the Lady Falcons

managed to pull off the hard-earned victory after being derailed by a sudden resignation of their 4 year head coach, and suffering a straight set loss against the UP Lady maroons 25-23, 25-22, 25-22.

eager to turn things around for their mentor’s sake, team captain mylene Paat and her squad put up a superb effort against the determined UP Lady maroons. Unfortunately, the breaks of the game didn’t go Adamson’s way as they lost in three but tightly contested sets, 23-25, 22-25, 22-25. that game also marked Adamson men’s Volleyball headcoach domingo Custodio’s first game as an interim coach for the ladies.

“Ang mindset itong game na ‘to gagawin namin lahat, iaalay namin para kay coach,” said team captain mylene Paat who broke down after mentioning his missing mentor.

In their next game, the Lady Falcons were able to hold themselves together and battle Ust in yet another five-set thriller for the second time this season. however, it

was the Lady tigresses who came out with a win, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 12-15, leaving Adamson still winless in the second round.

men’s volleyball team head coach domingo custodio who served as interim instructor of the Lady Falcons for the remainder of the season, went through a rupture courtesy of their straight set defeat against La salle, 25-13, 25-11, 25-18.

still searching for their first victory of the second round, Adamson then faced a difficult task as they matched up with dLsU and Ateneo for their 11th and 12th game, respectively. Adamson succumbed against dLsU in brutal straight sets, 13-25, 11-25, 18-25, while the match against Ateneo was as lopsided as the Lady Falcons were also defeated in three sets, 16-25, 16-25, 18-25.

hoping to stop the bleeding, Adamson put up a valiant fight against FEU Lady tamaraws. After being down two sets to none, the Lady Falcons, led by Jessica Galanza threatened for a comeback after showing some life and eventually taking the third set. Both team exchange sharp spurs in the fourth set, but it was the tamaraws’ heart that prevailed with a hard earned four-set victory, 23-

25, 22-25, 25-20, 26-28. consistency is an

important factor which the Lady Falcons were missing as they always found themselves sank in quagmire in the middle of each bout. Adamson needs to keep the fire burning until the end to secure a triumph through its combined labors; they must maintain its mental toughness while working corporately.

Adamson’s offense was clearly not in its best form this season. the Lady Falcons ranked seventh in spiking, serving and setting. once famed for their superb floor defense, Adamson was only able to finish seventh in Digging and was the worst team in the UAAP in Receiving.

Galanza will be essential for the Lady Falcons on the future games next season as she provide Adamson the firepower they need through her lethal spikes and service aces. Aside from being Adamson’s leading scorer so far, Galanza also leads the league in scoring with an impressive 118 points tied with Ust’s cherry Ann Rondina after the first round. moreover, Galanza has also positioned herself on top 7 of the statistical leaderboards spiker as she eclipsed 107 elusive spikes with 37.97% successful rate.

Paat, if she were to return for her final playing year, will need to display her top form and guide the struggling Lady Falcons through her leadership and expertise in the court. the Lady Falcon’s captain ball nevertheless placed herself on top 6 of the Best Servers on the first round as she erupted 13 aces in Adamson’s seven contests.

however, Roque, who had finally showed her unfaltering presence against FeU through digging a lone double digit output, needs to consistently exhibit her firepower to support their scoring rally.

on the other hand, other players who topped the statistical ranking in the first round were: Mary Joy dacoron, rank 6 among best blocker averaging 0.52 blocks per set; Fenela emnas, rank 4 among best setter averaging 5.78 sets per canto; and Jellie tempiatura who placed 9th among best receivers with 11.90 percentage efficiency.

As of press time, the UAAP has yet to release the statistics for the second-round games.

with the Lady Falcons’ season already over, it will be interesting to see how they will rebuild their team and bounce back from this season.

Softbelles end streak at 73, bag sixth straight UAAP titlethIs soFtBALL seAsoN is no doubt one to remember.

For the past five years, Adamson didn’t experience too much trouble clinching the championship titles, dominating the whole tournament and gracefully shoving opponents out of their way. they were unstoppable. Proof to this was the 62-game winning streak they had going into this season.

For this year, however, things changed quite a bit. the Adamson softball team started to show vulnerabilities. First, there were the struggles at the bat. then, eventually, their defensive end also began to show some cracks. there were games where they fell

merciless to their foes. But, also there were games where the Lady Falcons barely made it out with a win. In fact, Adamson could’ve suffered an upset against the NU Bulldogs in the first round if it wasn’t for the late-game heroics of Lorna Adorable.

eventually, however, the unavoidable happened. the Adamson softball team lost for the first time in six years.

It happened last march 2, 2016 against the determined Ust tiger softbelles. the squad from espana looked upset-hungry from the start, piling up homeruns after homeruns. eventually, the Lady Falcons got buried into a 0-6 deficit in the fifth inning. Adamson,

with former mVP Annalie Benjamen struggling, managed to score two runs but it was not enough to stop the bleeding. the match ended in favor of Ust, 6-2, thus putting the longest winning streak in Philippine sports history to conclusion.

despite being devastated with the loss, the Lady Falcons refused to let one defeat hold them back from grabbing their sixth straight title. After all, coach santiago never failed to remind her team that their ultimate goal is to bring home the championship.

In the semis, the Lady Falcons faced last year’s first runner-up UP Lady maroons. In that game, the Lady

Falcons were still struggling to hit anything at the bat in the first two innings. To make things worse, with Benjamen u n c h a r a c t e r i s t i c a l l y struggling at the mound, the Lady maroons managed to pull off a grand slam home run to lead Adamson 4-0. Fortunately, with the combined efforts of calumbres, Adorable and Sabobo cut the deficit to just two at the end of the third inning. UP, however, countered with a run of its own in the fourth inning to make the score 5-2. Knowing that Benjamen was still not her usual self, coach Ana santiago subbed

Lady Falcons finish adverse season at 7th place

AFteR GoING thRoUGh A seAsoN FULL oF setbacks, controversies and adversities, the Adamson women’s Volleyball team ended the UAAP season 78 at the seventh place with only three wins and 11 losses.

The Lady Falcons won their first game of the season in a five-set thriller against UST, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 30-28, 16-14. however, the team suffered a four-game losing streak against NU, dLsU, AdmU and UP. wounding from four straight losses in five games, the Lady Falcons reasserted their might up front, nipping the powerhouse FeU Lady tamaraws in another heart-pounding 5-set thriller showdown, 21-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-10. Adamson finished the first round with a three-set domination over the Ue Lady warriors, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19, which put them in the middle of the standings after seven games.

Unfortunately for the Lady Falcons, their season didn’t go any better from there. After suffering a blowout loss against the NU Bulldogs, 18-25, 12-25, 18-25, Adamson took another bullet as head coach sherwin meneses resigned from his position last march 11 due to the difference in the directions he and the team management wanted for the team.

From that point, things went down the drain

By Daniel Chrysostom B. Mercado

Women’s Volleyball Team Head Coach resignssheRwIN meNeses, who had coached Adamson since 2012, resigned from the head coaching position last march 10, 2015 due to internal issues floating between him and the team management.

meneses, who had been with Adamson for 17 years, addressed the difference in the direction he and the team management wanted for the squad as a cause for his resignation.

“hindi na healthy mentally and emotionally yung mga nangyayari," he said in an interview with FoX sports.

meneses, a former Adamsonian student-athlete himself, thanked Adamson for the opportunities and lessons the school had given him. however, he wishes that his resignation would serve as a wake-up call for Adamson.

“sana maging simula ito ng pagbabago patungo sa tamang direksyon kung saan ang priority ay players at ang team,” he said.

A day after meneses’ resgination, school officials have appointed men’s Volleyball head coach domingo custodio as an interim coach of the Lady Falcons.

“while it is unfortunate that the said decision has been reached midway,

the university passes the torch to current head coach of the Falcons’ men’s Volleyball tournament, coach domingo custodio,” Adamson said in a statement.

As of April 6, 2016, sources have confirmed that meneses will join the Ateneo Lady eagles coaching staff.

In meneses’ four years at the helm, the Lady Falcons have reached the Final Four twice, in season 75, where they finished third, and in season 76, where they ended up at fourth seed. though making it to the Final Four, the Lady Falcons were immediately eliminated by the Alyssa Valdez-led Lady eagles in both years. since then, Adamson has yet to find

their way back to the Final Four. Last season, the squad from san marcelino ended up only at the seventh seed.

the squad from san marcelino had a rough but tolerable start this season, winning only three of their seven games in the first round. things, however, went worse from there as they only managed to get one win in the second round, ending the season at the seventh place with a 4-10 record.

with the departure of sherwin meneses, the question still remains on who will be able to bring the women’s volleyball program back to its winning ways.

Page 3Creation and Destruction:

A natural Paradox

2016 is the ‘Year of Mercy’ according to the Vatican. Surely, we will need a lot of

this mercy if the election shoves us to turmoil. The moment the campaign period kicked off, it dragged us along its rough path.

Take a closer look at groups with opposing views:

The “Hoy! Pinoy Ako, (Pinoy siya!) Believers”

Probably, this is your Grandma who is a diehard-fan of FPJ. These supporters truly believe from their heart that Sen. Grace Poe deserves to run as a President regardless of her citizenship and they are in full support of her candidacy.

They are more willing to share a sample of their DNA just to prove that Sen. Poe is a ‘legit Pinoy’ (neglecting the fact that Sen. Poe once renounced her Filipino citizenship). You’d likely hear these ‘believers’ saying, “Ituloy ang sinimulan ni FPJ.”

Social Media Presence (SMP): Overall, they behave gently like Sen. Poe. They are less engaged into social media wars, but if provoked then maybe they have this to say: “Isang bala ka lang.”

The “Palengkeros of Manila”

The Presidentiable fan StereotypeEver heard the word ‘Mr.

Palengke’? That’s none other than Mar Roxas. This was a brand some years ago.

Ironically, Sec. Roxas and his supporters don’t seem to justify that ‘Palengke’ image. You might have encountered these ‘palengkeros’ around elite hubs in Manila.

The supporters cheer for Sec. Roxas (neglecting his poor performance as Secretary of DOTC) since most of them haven’t experienced MRT/LRT rush-hour feeling. They may have crossed EDSA in the convenience of their cars.

The Palengkeros are holding into the promise that Sec. Roxas will continue and expand the ‘Daang Matuwid’ (like China’s continuous expansion in the West Ph sea), and that his track-record best suits the Presidency.

Lastly, ‘palengkeros’ aren’t from Tacloban and surely not typhoon-evacuees.

SMP: They aren’t felt that much. These supporters prefer to keep silent to avoid conflicts with the anti-yellow flock.

The “D-squad”

No, ‘D’ doesn’t stand for

Death squad or Davao. D means Duterte or also known as Digong. The ‘D-squad’ are mostly from the provinces especially those who are located in the islands of Visayas and Mindanao. They firmly believe that Mayor Duterte will transform the Philippines the way he did Davao City.

The ‘D-squad’ hates drugs, crimes and law-violators. It seeks for an iron-fist leadership to get rid of these. But the thing is, most of the squad members justifiy the extrajudicial killings recorded in Davao which Mayor Duterte never denied (which is a clear act of loss/lack of due process).

You heard it right; supporting the man from Davao is tantamount to Federalism and the resurrection of death-penalty. The ‘D-squad’ supports Mayor Duterte as a recourse to rid of criminality and drugs that riddle the country. With Davao City as one of the safest cities in the world, coupled with Mayor Duterte’s tough looking attitude, the ‘D-squad’ is convinced that his leadership will bring about real change.

SMP: They are outrageous. They possess Mayor Duterte’s attitude in social media. Don’t dare

to go against them. Pope Francis wasn’t even excused.

The “Defend-sors”Yes that’s it. They are the

defenders of Sen. Miriam Santiago. They may also be labeled the Miriamnatics being the fanatics of Sen. Santiago’s punch lines.

Gone are the days of ‘Boy pick-up.’ It’s Sen. Santiago’s time to joke around. In turn, the Univesity polls pick her up.

The ‘Defend-sors’ are confident with their bet to be capable to cure an ailing society.

Her supporters usually brag about their Presidential-bet’s educational attainment and legal prowess. Her strong personality and sharp-tongued harangue intimidate people who accuse her of being mentally-ill.

SMP: They are actively sharing Sen. Santiago’s records. They don’t annoy. They are no keyboard warriors either.

The “Kakulays of Makati”The Kapatid, Kapuso or

Kapamilya divide is gone and network wars are over. These supporters are united and marked themselves as ‘Kakulays of

Makati.’Despite the allegations of graft

and corruption against VP Binay, they yell on, recepients as they are of cinema passes and what-have-you.

For as long as VP Binay is not proven guilty, these people will never withdraw their support for this presidential candidate.

SMP: Not felt that much because they don’t want to be bullied. But mind you, they might have won this battle from the back court!

Clearly, nothing can stop you from believing what you want. Your social status is not the basis of the sincerity of your intention. Your choices reflect you as a person. You have the right to defend what you know is right. And you let yourself be identified by the colors that best represent your sentiments.

After all, we are bound to protect not the candidates but every Filipinos and their right to choose freely.

Let’s leave it to Gandhi’s, “Be the change you want to see in this world.”

Vote wisely!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of, well, Messiahs

By Jumarvin R. Ridulfa

While the X-Men franchise puts a different perspective

on discrimination, specifically a subtle take on racism, Batman v Superman (BvS) goes beastmode on the topic of society’s thirst for an all-powerful meta-being.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the same director behind Man of Steel, the movie was a full-on take on the Messiah Complex (MC) psychology which says a lot about one-third of The Holy Trinity of the DC Universe, Superman.

God Complex level: OVER 9000!For a superhero movie, this is

no news anymore. The thing with BvS’s brand of MC psychology is that it is too blatant for reasons unknown.

One scene in particular proves this, of course: Superman rescues a disheveled girl from a burning building. He puts her down in the pavement where the girl’s mother is waiting. Lo and behold, a myriad of people come rushing to where Superman is standing – hands outstretched, while the Man of Steel looks into the distance, probably telling himself, “Yep, I did good!”

Let us take into account how all this happened in Metropolis, a fictional city, nonetheless situated in America.

Now, it should be noted that in a recent study by the Pew Research Center, 23% of the adult population in US is religiously unaffiliated. Furthermore, studies related to the demographics of atheism account that 10% to 22% of the world population has no religion.

The palatability of the surge of movies portraying individuals with Messiah Complex might be connected to people’s faith in a religious being.

‘When life is tough, or uncertain, people believe in big gods,’ said Russell Gray, a professor at the University of Auckland and a founding director of the Max Planck Institute for History and the Sciences in Jena, Germany. Moreover, he said that communities where there are politically complex and classist groups tend to believe in a high, controlling God or gods who enforce a moral code.

But here lies the problem: believing in a higher being may provide real assistance and a sense of security to disadvantaged individuals, but it does not actually solve problems associated to poverty – imbalance to the social hierarchy, discrimination, and unemployment, among others.

The British Humanist Association warned that the promotion of religion or a belief in a Messiah, as a positive social influence, masks larger social problems contributing to social issues such as a lack of access to education.

It could have been more useful to bring out the message that the hero already lives inside us.

And the kryptonite? Ourselves.

Writer, Alien, Middle-Class, MessiahLet’s just get this out of the

way: Superman is no Iron Man (surprise, surprise). Tony Stark, in all things that he is, is the embodiment of the white-man culture: rich, gadget-updated, free, and image-driven. Clark Kent on the other hand is, well, everything else. His narrative goes on the basis of him being a middle-class adoptee that tries to fit in a world that doesn’t let it. Moreover, he is something that Stark will never be: an alien, literally and figuratively.

Alien, in law terms, is a person who resides within the borders of

a country but is not a natural-born. This says a lot on Superman’s characterization. He poses as a hero, yes, but on the hours of the day that he is not, he is nothing but Clark Kent – a worker, a writer of the Daily Planet, an alien who tries to make the world a better place to live in his small ways.

In a way, Snyder was playing on the tip of the iceberg when he focused more on the viability of Superman being treated as Jesus of Nazareth when he could have placed the limelight on him being an immigrant fighting capitalism.

It is beneficial to mention that Superman’s arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor, is the human embodiment of capitalism (surprise, surprise). More than just the catalyst for Batman and Superman to wreck havoc in Metropolis, as portrayed in the movie, Luthor thrived in the capitalist ideology that you wouldn't be poor if you just went out there and achieved everything. And that’s rich coming from someone who used ruthless ways to get where he is.

So when the Man of Steel comes, with his brightly-colored red cape and handsome smile, saving people and all, his human achievements are overshadowed. And Lex, a narcissist to the core, would not let a low-life alien, a mere settler, to come on top unscathed. A man like him believes that if anyone should influence and motivate humans, it should be a man, not a society-perceived god.

In a world where a presidential candidate in America believes in eradicating all forms of immigration, it could have been more utilitarian to use the narrative of an immigrant who proceeds on rescuing people unlike him because it is the right thing to do – even when people resist.

Well, look at you. You are about to join the workforce now. Our

pal, the department, have a lick of the sweet sweet world that is your future career. Here are some tips to make sure you don’t mess up that much:

internship tips

Embrace the bitter truth. You probably won’t

be doing anything huge for this company. As an intern, at least in most cases, your job is to make someone else’s easier. Photocopying files, serving coffee, and downright being a kargador, you name it. And you have to understand that you may be handed a job that is totally unrelated to your course.

Overeager?Fantastic. If the tasks – nay, errands,

you are to handle are as exciting as photocopying a 1000-page book, show everyone that you are in fact pumped up about it. Say yes to anything and do it with utmost dedication. Display no mistakes in all these little jobs until they finally recognize your potential—that it isn’t limited to flipping and pounding pages. They’ll realize that you are so much more and eventually they may let you try something more amazing.

Get up early.Yes, you genuinely tried

to practice punctuality; too bad

it only was in the early days after you are hired. Come two weeks of setting your alarm clock to 5am and you take your coddle boss for granted. Do not be late. An hour of absence after the 7 am mark is an hour you will never get back (unless the company entertains OTs). Take note that the completion of your internship will be based on the number of hours you spend working so you will have to make up for it. Plus, leave the house 30 minutes early. You are in the workforce now. Traffic is a nasty bastard nobody can control.

Turn that phone off.Do not waste your time

on Piano Tiles, Color Switch, and Tinder because:

1) you suck at the games and you probably never had a

match at Tinder anyway, 2) it is not the time for

that, and 3) supervisor will notice

you equals unproductivity equals low evaluation grade.

Eat smart.You have to understand

that not all companies pay their interns. If you want to save money you can either pack your lunch or go to nearby carenderias because your company canteen might be too expensive for your baon.

Stay colleagues at the job, friends at the after-work.

You may want to establish some sort of division between you and your workmates during working hours. Acting unprofessionally

with someone may put you in unnecessary trouble. It tends to be that way especially among boys – not male; boys. Stick to work because it is the time for it. But be friendly, nonetheless.

Practice humility. Not only does it award

friendships, connections, and a lunch buddy, but practically, you don’t want to be graded poorly later on by your supervisor on the evaluation sheet. If you think for a second that studying in a “prestigious” school grants you the right to belittle other interns, then you are wrong.

If you are a fan of discoveries especially those which are related to wars and explosives

then the quote above might ring a bell (or even trigger a large explosion) into your ears. That was what J. Robert Oppenheimer said after witnessing the World’s first Nuclear Test in 1945. The quotation, though a bit grammatically peculiar, is a line derived from the great book of Bhagavad Gita. According to scholars, J. Robert Oppenheimer made such statement because he believed that the success of the first Nuclear Test was a testament that the power that could destroy worlds were now within the hands of everyone. Humans who were first deemed capable of creation because of discoveries and inventions and were later named as destroyers because of this feat.

Despite the scientific innovations that gave us the title of the “creators” and “destroyers” of this world, Nature deserves the title. To prove this point, let us consider the natural processes that are continuously shaping and re-shaping our world. Look at the island province of Bohol – which experienced firsthand these two oppositely-situated tendencies of nature: creation and destruction.

Creation Through DissolutionThe province of Bohol,

aside from its googly-eyed tarsiers, could be best defined by its majestic chocolate hills. The Chocolate Hills are geological formations which can be found in Carmen, Bohol and composed of at least 1,260 hills. Mother Nature excels in creating, in a word.

Before the chocolate hills become perfectly conical as they look whether in our paper bills or in our souvenir photos, they first have undergone a series of geological processes that took a long time – that even surpasses the span of human history.

The conical hills of the Chocolate hills are geomorphological features that are referred to as cockpit karsts, which simply means that it is created

Creation and destruction: A natural paradox“I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

By Nathaniel E. Parcutela

mainly through the dissolution of limestone formations via rainfall, surface water, and groundwater. Geologically speaking, limestones are rocks that dissolve upon contact with water or any acid. Of course, it is not an instant process– a geological process normally takes thousands of years to be completed – since a cycle of dissolving was necessary to create a topography as large and as defined as the chocolate hills. Since chocolate hills are limestone formations, there are caves and sinkholes and other limestone formations within the vicinity of the hills.

It took nature thousands or even millions of years to create these majestic hills. Nature sure did take time.

Just Shaking Things Up

Ironically, even if Mother Nature typically bides its time in creation, it is sparing no moment in destruction. Last October 15, 2013, the province of Bohol experienced a magnitude 7.2 earthquake. This quake managed to surprise not just the residents but the authorities as well as it was generated by a previously undiscovered fault line which is now named as the North Bohol Fault discovered by a team of volcanologists led by Dr. Teresito Bacolcol (who happens to be a Geology professor in Adamson University.)

The 2013 Bohol earthquake is now considered as the deadliest earthquake in the Philippines in 23 years. According to reports made by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRMC), 222 were reported dead, 8 missing, and 976 injured. The earthquake also affected 73, 000 structures, in which 14, 500 of which were totally wrecked by the ground-shaking including the famous Maribojoc and Baclayon churches.

It was estimated that the energy released by this earthquake was equivalent to 32 Hiroshima bombs. Isn’t that the perfect testament of power?

Still, this pales in comparison to the magnitude 9.5 Chile earthquake that holds that record.

Humans exist not to spar with the power of nature. Although there is nothing wrong when it comes to seeking development and innovations, we must not seek to challenge Nature’s power. In the end, we stand at its mercy.

Social media accounts, fictional TV couple portmanteaus, and patronization of fast-food

franchises: three things that could define the generation that forever changed the cultural landscape of the world.

In October 2014, researchers Neil Howe and William Strauss defined Millennials as the demographic of those “who were born in 1982 and approximately the 20 years thereafter.” In 2012, they affixed the end point as 2004. Contrary to popular belief, Millennials were not defined as the group of people who are too fixated in using “hugot” lines. Sad face emoji, I know.

In a recent study made by the Boston Consulting Group, they broke down the generation of VSCOcam selfies into four statements:

Generation ‘On Fleek’: A Four-statement Summary vis-à-vis Millennials

“I want it fast, and I want it now.”Richard T. Sweeney, a

University Librarian of New Jersey Institute of Technology stated in his research how Millennials, by their own admission, have no tolerance for delays. They expect everything on their lap in an instant. This could be an effect of being simultaneously born with the computers and mobile phones, breeding a culture of innovation, sense of urgency, and thirst for creativity.

But why is there a need for everything to be lightning-fast? Who knows? They probably know when the actual Apocalypse will come.

“I trust my friends more than ‘corporate mouthpieces.’”

Let’s face it: when the rest of the world is looking down on you, all you have to do is tweet about it,

or PM your friends on Facebook and then the result would be a reply rushing to your comfort without the benefits of facts.

“Millennials say that it is important to them to live close to their friends, compared with 29 percent of Baby Boomers and 40 percent of Generation Xers,” stated the Monitoring The Future in a 2011 study. More than just being connected to their peers through their social media accounts, Millennials are compelled to trust their peers more because they seem to ‘understand’ one another. Or so they say.

So if you respond in a way they don’t understand, or don’t want to, let’s just say they’d think you’re talking in Morse code.

“I’m a social creature -- both online and offline.”

In a study by Future Cast, it is said that Millennials are 2.5x more likely to be an early adopter of technology than other generations. Nothing new here, really.

Pew Research Center stated that a quarter of Millennials believe that their relationship to technology is what makes their generation unique. It has brought them closer to their friends and family in a way that they are always updated with what’s happening. Somehow, our likes, favorites, and Snapchat stories translate to our actions outside the web.

“I can make the world a better place.”Online, we are the masters of

our own Instagram feeds, making sure we’re using the proper filter to beautify the perfectly-angled shots

of our morning espressos. Offline, we try to make the world a better place by not being the biggest apathetic skeptic out there.

According to a study by David Card and Thomas Lemieux, more Millennials have a college degree than any other generation of young adults, resulting in an increase in social awareness and a more supportive outlook in a progressive domestic social agenda.

So when a Baby Boomer suddenly calls you a “political analyst” just because you voiced out your opinion regarding a presidential candidate’s ignorance and corrupt leadership, tell them it has always been your job to do so – we cannot afford an incompetent administration yet ever again.

For the last decade, Adamson University has massively increased the tuition fee of

its students. When it comes to any increase in the cost of education, we feel overwhelmed because of the resulting consequences to our family budget. Especially now, where it seems that the costs of the goods and services in the Philippines have already been increased.

Today, the K-12 program has been already established in the system of education in our country. So we must brace ourselves because its impacts will definitely be felt in the upcoming school year. Many have taken their stands against it, but nothing has happened.

One of the impacts is there will

be no freshmen enrollees. Meaning, the budget of Adamson University will surely be affected. Moreover, there is a big possibility that in order for the University to continue operating smoothly, there will be a need to increase the tuition fee again.

If the administration can ask us if that will be okay, most of us will perhaps smile good-naturedly and say that, even if we are not okay with it, we understand why it is being done. Besides, it is not as if we can stop the increase if we want to.

Nonetheless, we hope that Adamson University can provide us quality education that we deserve.

CreDits to artfairphilippines.com

On spoken words and unspoken sentimentsBy Carizza Ibañez

Whoever said that poetry is dead obviously

didn’t know where to go or haven’t tried witnessing a live spoken word event because the last time it was checked, spoken word poetry is a booming industry that is changing the landscape of the night life in the metro.

According to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, spoken word poetry is described as “poetry that is written on a page but performed for an audience. Because it is performed, this poetry tends to demonstrate a heavy use of

rhythm, improvisation, free association, rhymes, rich poetic phrases, word play, and slang. It is more aggressive and ‘in your face’ than more traditional forms of poetry.”

It is not known how spoken word poetry bloomed in the Philippines. Neither is there any official record affirming when it started, but the SWP industry was given a chance to flourish in 2005 when Kooky Tuason, founder of Bigkas Pilipinas—believed to be the pioneer group of spoken word poets in the country—was called to Jam 88.3 to host the first-ever spoken

word radio show in the Philippines. The program, titled after the group’s name, gained a wide cult following and lasted until 2009. But fans of Bigkas Pilipinas need not worry because the show is back in the airwaves via sarisarisounds.com, an online radio platform which promotes OPM.

After Bigkas Pilipinas’ final airing seven years ago, the seemingly bright future of SWP appeared to have dimmed a little since it has taken a back seat and has become limited to underground poetry performances in small coffee

shops and art galleries. But in 2013, SWP was

back on track again after Speak! Philippines tried reviving the dwindling industry. Originally named Team Sev’s, penned after the place where its founders discovered their love for performance poetry, Speak! Philippines now considers themselves “a non-profit community whose main goal is to make spoken word events and slams more accessible to all those who share an interest towards live poetry.”

According to Slac Cayamanda, one of the brains behind Speak! Philippines,

he and his fellow founders formed the group in the hopes of auditioning for a poetry slam festival in Australia. Since their establishment in 2013, Speak! Philippines has taken under its wing some of the most prominent spoken word groups in the country today such as White Wall Poetry, Words Anonymous, Polaris, Pinwheel Poetry, Kanto, and The Paperback Project to name a few.

The rest is history. Since then, SWP has taken the country by storm and twenty-somethings, who comprise the majority of these events, became very

much hooked to this trend. But the clamor to bring

SWP closer to the hearts of younger audiences remains, as veteran spoken word artists themselves aim to make the youth, especially the students, realize that SWP is a true art form and not just a mere hobby to pass off time.

The Adamson Chronicle’s Jumarvin R. Ridulfa and AdU Band’s Martin Riggs Nuñez seem to have the same goal in mind: to bring SWP closer to the students of Adamson. And they did, when last

Art Fair Philippines 2016: Great Artworks, Great ArtistsBy Marimar S. Quinay

More than just c e l e b r a t i n g the month of

February as “Feb-ibig” month in the country, it has also been National Arts Month for the last twenty-five years. And so while other people are celebrating love month, people who appreciate art celebrated

Art Fair Philippines 2016, an annual four-day art exhibit event, at The Linkin Car Park in Makati.

Art Fair Philippines is an event that started in June 2012 and was officially

launched in 2013. It is a premier platform for art exhibits and selling the best in modern and contemporary visual art in the Philippines.

The fair was opened to the public from February 18 to 21. Featuring the works of Filipino artists, it was the perfect event for the average art enthusiast. More art aficionados attended the event to discover artworks not just in the Philippines but also in other countries. This year, Art Fair Philippines wanted to be the window of contemporary art.

“What we want to do is to be the window to Philippine contemporary art, and in the long run, the window of the world. So what we’d like is for this Fair to provide a platform for Filipino artists to showcase works that would show the rest of the world what is happening in the Filipino art scene,” said Trickie Lopa, one of Art Fair Philippines’ organizers.

They conducted an Art Fair PH TALKS held in the Ateneo Art Gallery as an educational hub for art enthusiasts. This year,

the Fair also organized a tour to different museums. “We organized tours from Friday (February 19) to Sunday (February 21), in which museums in Manila and Quezon City, and even Pinto Art Gallery are included,” she added.

Moreover, the Fair showcased 40 art galleries with special artworks from other galleries around the world. “Galleries from Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, and Spain will be available in the Fair,” Ms. Lopa conveyed.

By the SeasideBy Kevin Joshua G. Rebultan

February 15, a spoken word event was finally launched at the University.

Gunita, Ridulfa and Nuñez’s brainchild, was the first-ever live poetry performance in the University and with the millennials’ new-found interest in SWP, the two hoped for a successful event.

And a success it was, because on the day of the event, the façade of the Adamson University Art Gallery was jam-packed, with some students having to stand up while watching and listening since the chairs provided weren’t enough to accommodate the more than a hundred who attended the

occasion—a far cry from the estimated 50 people they expected to show up.

It was a night of mostly love and loss hugots, of unreciprocated feelings and burning passion, from students, faculty, and alumni of the University. Well, who can blame them? Love has always been the majority of the themes of spoken word performances and with good reason. Love’s many facets speak volumes to most of us, and it’s like a universal language that many people can fluently speak because it’s something we all are so familiar with.

And since the event kicked off the day after

on sPoken/P1

I guess it is always better when things happen unplanned, like watching a movie or reading a book, without knowing the plot. The story unfolds spontaneously, and

when there is nothing to expect, everything else satisfies.

Maybe I need a break, or maybe I have all the time in the world. I’m not sure. For a reason that only God knows what, I want to go somewhere, with anyone. I may be lonely but at least I’m not in the state of solitude.

We start paving our way towards a place that promises tranquility. The night is deep but we are young. We wander endlessly through dark and deserted roads, with only streetlamps illuminating the lanes. Our laughter breaks the deafening silence of the streets.

We arrive at the shoreline just in time. It is high tide, a flock of birds fly just above the waves, creating a symphony of harmonious chirping. The cold breeze confirms that the sun is about to rise, though the sky is full of stars, and the place is still covered with a spectrum of pitch blackness.

But it is the moon that captures us. It is in the middle of it all, glowing mystically amidst the mirage of colors. We stare at it for who knows how long now. It doesn’t seem to fade, and under its glaring vividness are our wonders of mind.

What life is there on earth’s natural satellite? What life is there on the other side of the sea?

Nothing is ever certain. So I always believe that it is better when things happen unplanned, very sudden that even the people I am with now may be strangers the next day. Just as we discover who we are and become sure of what we want, we realize that the people we thought we’d spend forever with turns out to have a different perspective.

But there is one thing I am sure of, we are living the moment. We are making memories.

Yet, we are letting go.

Valentine’s, the word “gunita” seemed appropriate for all the people who wanted to reminisce all the things that should be remembered.

The bands’ performances also did not fail to compliment the mood of the occasion and even added to the already nag-uumapaw na feels of everyone present.

The night ended with everyone going home with a hugot or two to keep in their hearts. But more than the cheesy one-liners and the sawi rhetorics, the question remains: Will spoken word poetry stay a trend — a fad that, sooner or later, we’ll eventually forget until a new craze comes in — or will it

be gone like words written in the wind? One thing is for certain, and that is the bright future of spoken word poetry that lies ahead of it. Sure, it is still a long journey to finally make everyone interested and convince people of its wonders but hey, big things come from small beginnings, however cliché that may sound. Because poetry is very much alive and thriving, just in a different form from something that we are used to. All that’s needed is to cultivate a culture of literary want among the young ones to keep the flame of spoken word poetry burning across generations to come.

DEADPOOL: THE INTRICACIES OF A BLOODBATH

By Josephus Jules S. Vivas

Watching a Hollywood produced superhero movie never fails to

amaze any kind of audience. With its jam-packed plot, stunning visual effects, and unusual theme centralized on science and fiction, no doubt superhero movies today dominate the mainstream film industry. With that in mind, how can a superhero movie stand out from movies of the same genre? Simple--by adding certain elements out of the conventional format of the rest. The recent American superhero movie Deadpool based on the Marvel Comics character astoundingly embodied certain traits that exceeded the already extraordinary superhero movies we’ve come to know.

(Disclaimer: may contain some spoilers!)

A dive into Deadpool.Maybe most of us are

familiar with Deadpool but for those who haven’t heard of him, he is the most unusual and “special” antihero of the Marvel Universe (MU).

Deadpool is this immortal mutant martial arts and weapons expert assassin who has a bizarre and humorous personality. If you’ve seen him in the comics or movie, one can compare him to a zombie ninja because of his a.) agility b.) deformities and c.) ability to “not die.” All that and more, his most distinguished peculiarity is his manner of breaking the fourth wall or the imaginary wall that separates the audiences from his world. He casually talks and interacts with the

She’s athletic and smart. This 19-year old whopper was recently recognized as one of the ten outstanding Auditors at the Student Awards 2016. But while she’s

serious with her studies and responsibilities as a student leader, this BA Communication Arts stud also has her eyes on poetry and she really is good at the craft.

The girl may never have stabbed anyone’s eyes (yet), but she’s as interesting as Arya Stark nonetheless. She resembles the badass she-wolf from Winterfell immensely except that she’s taller than your kuya at 5’8. She is Jemy of House Damian, Auditor of the Academic Scholars Alliance of

Debates have been going on for ages, on whether leaders are born or made. Some say it’s an innate characteristic, that everyone is born with equal

capabilities to lead, while others believe only a select few are chosen, that it takes a long time and a lot of circumstances before a person can be molded into someone who can effectively lead. But John Rey Burce is a little bit of both; he came into this world armed with the wits and charisma to be

Adamson University, Turner of Heads.

We saw you perform at Gunita. What got you started in spoken word poetry?

So, lalo ako nasaktan.

What’s your favorite piece? Can you tell us something about it?

I also heard that you are into volleyball. Can you tell us a brief history of you and the sport?

I’m in love with that sport more than I’m in love with a person. I started playing volleyball when I was in elementary. I didn’t actually play but I was part of the line up even if I was just there sitting in a corner, waiting for the game to end because I know that the day will pass and my coach still wouldn’t let me play since I was not as good as the others. But that didn’t stop me from wanting that sport. I was in second year when I started taking that sport seriously. Seriously meaning, I attended hardcore trainings, I met better players and most importantly, I got to play for real. Then it came to a point where I told myself that one day, I’ll wear that jersey too and

carry the school’s pride.

Name one volleyball player you most admire.Forever fan ako ni Michelle Gumabao.

What’s your favorite street food and why?Kamote-cue. Bukod sa affordable, masarap at matamis.

Sobrang hilig ko sa matatamis na pagkain.

What is one thing you find weird about yourself?Mahilig ako sa bata. Tapos kapag nakakakita ako ng

sobrang cute napapaiyak nalang ako sa saya. Swear weird yan.

What is one secret you can reveal?Mahal ko si Mr. Bean. I cannot eat dinner kapag ‘di

ako nakakanuod ng kahit isang episode ni Mr. Bean so yeah meron akong copies ng episodes ni Mr. Bean sa laptop both cartoon and yung actual.

Humakot ka nung Adamson Student Awards 2016. How does it feel? Masaya.

There are a lot of things going on for you. Communications student ka pa. How do you manage your schedule?

Why did you choose BA Communication Arts?

in charge and in his journey through life, he was able to turn himself into someone with the power to effect change.Q: How do you interpret the term "headturner"?

A: Someone who instantly catches the attention of other people through their looks, siguro?

Q: How does it feel to be Chronicle’s chosen headturner for this issue? How would you describe yourself?

Q: What do you think is/are the reason/s why you were chosen as this issue’s campus headturner?

A: Hindi ko talaga alam kung paano namili or what the considerations were sa pagpili.

Q: Is your GWA consistently good?A: Hindi naman siya consistent na mataas, pangarap

From 1st-3rd year, above average naman GWA ko; pero 4th and 5th year, bumaba na talaga.

Q: What do you consider as a high grade?A: Well, almost everyone naman siguro has his/her

own perception kung ano ang “mataas.” For me, 1.00-1.75 ang range ng mataas na grades.

Q: Why take up ECE? Has it always been your dream course?A: I never had any “dream” course, sa totoo lang. I

was under the impression na kapag lalaki, dapat engineering ang program sa college. Namili lang ako between Civil and Electronics Engineering noon, tapos ECE ang napili ko.

Q: Tell us the history of how you became a part of AUECESS. What made you join the organization?

A: First year pa lang, eager na akong sumali sa AUECESS. As a person, gustung-gusto kong nagiging part ng isang institution na may sobrang gandang layunin for holistic human development.

Q: What was the first position you held upon becoming an officer?A: Initially, naging assistant treasurer ako ng

AUECESS, A.Y. 2013-2014.

Q: What were the changes that you made within the organization during your administration?

A: Hardest question, so far.

Q: In last year’s RSO Mid-Year Assessment, AUECESS was the Top 4 RSO. How does it feel to have the organization you are leading be included in the top 10 RSOs within the university?

A: Sobrang saya, as in! Super proud, kasi after 4 years nakasama ulit ang AUECESS sa top 10!

Q: Was there ever a time when AUECESS topped the RSO Midyear Assessment? Has it been consistently in the top 10?

A: I think there was a time na AUECESS ang Top 1 ng midyear assessment. Siguro, ‘yong time na naging top 1 sila sa year-end assessment. Consistency? Not really.

Q: What kind of leadership style do you have?A: Hindi ako familiar sa mga leadership styles eh,

ADAMSON HEADTURNERS

Page 23: April 2016

3

Q: How were you able to make AUECESS a commendable RSO?A: Puso lang, parang Gilas Pilipinas! On a

serious note, what I really meant about puso was doing everything with a notably good character. Isa ‘yan sa mga trait ng AUECESS.

Q: Were there any struggles the organization faced before it was handed to you? And were you able to fix it?

A: Yes, there were a lot. Gaya nga ng sabi ko, nasa rebuilding stage pa ‘yong organization namin kaya medyo nangangapa pa lahat. Hindi man totally naayos, alam kong nag-improve ‘yong AUECESS ngayong taon.

Q: What can you say about how the school is being run?A: Masyadong broad ang tanong, mahirap

sumagot. Baka hindi ako maka-graduate, biro lang.

Q: Do you have plans to run for a position in the AUSG? Why or why not?

A: Dati meron, pero ngayon parang wala na akong plans to run for a position sa AUSG. Hindi naman sa takot ako or something, mas maganda lang siguro kapag familiar ako sa people na pagsisilbihan ko. And for me, Adamson is a collection of the extremes and the in-betweens – sobrang komplikado. Okay na ako sa ECE community.

Q: Do you see yourself leading the entire student body that is—being the AUSG President sometime in the near future?

A: No.

Q: Do you have other extra-curricular activities inside or outside the university? Any other organizations?

A: Yes! Bukod sa AUECESS, sobrang active ko sa Institute of Electronics Engineering of the Philippines – Manila Student Chapter (IECEP-MSC)

Q: What are your achievements inside and outside the university?

A: Siguro, I’ll share those awards na lang na sobrang significant for me. First, would be the short run I had in the Ayala Young Leaders Congress (AYLC) 2016. Mula sa 600+ na student leaders who applied from different universities and colleges all over the country, nakasama ako sa Top 158 applicants na qualified for the final interview. Second, isa pang sobrang laki ng impact sa’kin, the St. Vincent de Paul Award for Campus Leadership. Natupad ‘yong isa sa mga pangarap ko; nabigyan ako ng chance to deliver a speech in front on my fellow student-leaders. Third and fourth, ‘yong “Most Outstanding Board of Directors” award ko from our national organization, IECEP-MSC and “Ten Outstanding Secretaries” award given by the Office for Student Affairs.

Q: With all the responsibilities and commitments that you have inside and outside the school, how do you manage to do all those things simultaneously?

Now that John Rey is about to leave the academe, our beloved Alma Mater will bid adieu to one of its most promising students. The falcons will have to unclasp its claws and let go of one of the persons who contributed so much to the university. Yet the question remains: is a true leader born or made? Who cares? The only thing certain is that each one of us has the ability to be a head of something, to rule over and see a metamorphosis within whatever it is that we are spearheading. And we need not look far to see someone who can inspire us because the university is lucky enough to have John Rey Burce—the epitome of what a great student-leader should be—within its walls.

ko “one day gagawa ako ng sariling pelikula.”

What’s the best thing about being a student-leader?Meeting new people plus handling conflicts and

organizing events! May time na napili ako as one of the representatives para sa Bigkis Phil Scholar Summit ang saya lang sa feeling to meet new people na may kanya-kanyang kwento sa buhay at syempre yung mga part ng ASA-AdU, nagiging close ako sa mga scholars tapos ang gaan sa feeling na rerecognize ka nila sa hallway or Ichachat ka nila not just to ask questions about the org pero pati na rin sa personal life. Tapos ayun nga, handling conflicts kasi sa isang org ‘di naman maiiwasan na magkaproblema, so parang natuto na ‘ko maging relax at tagapagkalma kapag may mga ‘di pagkakaintindihan among the officers. And lastly, organizing events! Ayun.

What’s the worst thing about being a student-leader?Sacrificing breaktimes, weekends, and vacations

to accomplish org-related stuff. So in short, yung time limited na sa ibang bagay kase may kahati na at you should always know your priorities.

So why short hair?

Pero ang totoo niyan, I don’t know! Once upon a time naisipan ko mag-short hair then boom naadik na ‘ko.

You’re tall. Do you think it causes intimidation o asset mo ba yan?

And yes, it causes intimidation.

What are your insecurities?I always have this feeling na I’m not good enough

for anyone or for anything. Mababa confidence ko. Kase I’m scared of rejection. So in short yung sarili ko, yung kakayahan ko. Inggit ako sa mga taong sobrang creative and bibo.

What are other things you are passionate about?Passion for animals. Pet lover ako. I have a dog

and a cat. Tapos kahit street dogs and cats gustong-gusto kong pinapakain or kahit hinahawakan man lang.

Do you have any message for students seeking a position at ASA ADU?Tiwala lang.

Dapat ang main reason is to serve and lead people. Tatakbo ka para matulungan ang iba and at the same time matuto.

comics

viewers or readers which adds to the comicality and absurdity of his character. Finally, the antihero part of him is what gives him an edge over the other superheroes. We normally perceive superheroes with remarkable set of values, morals, and principles but Deadpool is the amoral hero who only knows how to hack and kill things yet at the end of it all emerges as the guy who ultimately saves the day.

Rated: G for Gore-geousThe movie isn’t actually

Rated G for the general audiences but Rated 16 or for those of that age and above.

The movie dealt with mature topics like violence and sex, which was one substantial factor why it was something different from common superhero movies. Literally starting with an action scene, blood splashing everywhere, bullets flying, vehicles crashing, people killing, people dying, the bloodbath consistent from beginning till end will excite the action lovers and gore enthusiasts. The movie is teeming with violence which gave justice to the comic version since Deadpool is the

personification of extreme violence in the MU.

The color of love is redThe color of blood is

red, and the color of love is red. Deadpool is red, therefore he is both.

Perhaps one more strength which could also be regarded as a weakness of the film is its focus on romance. Yes, Deadpool is also a romance movie. The story revolved around the protagonist’s lovelife--how two tragedy-stricken people fall in love with one another, how love brings both hope and despair, how love requires sacrifice, and finally, how love changes anyone into a hero. Wade meets Angel and like in any romantic movie, two flawed people fall in love and become perfect for one another. In any story, conflict is inevitable. When the couple thinks that their life is going smoothly, Wade discovers he has cancer and what’s worse is that it’s at the fatal stage. He continued to fight his disease for the love of his life, leading him to accept an offer of salvation by turning him into a mutant. The process made him immortal but

at the cost of being extremely deformed, which made him take revenge on the people responsible for turning him that way. The baddies naturally put up a good fight and kidnap Angel but in the end, the hero regardless of being badly bruised and beaten, emerges victorious. After the bloodshed and countless deaths, they all lived happily ever after.

Sugar spice and everything niceHigh quality visual

effects, realistic prosthetics, well-devised soundtrack, standard cinematography, proper casting, and a compact plot are the ingredients to make a unique superhero movie.

The technical aspect of the movie was superb. The flawless computer-generated imagery (CGI) made all the cool stunts possible. For instance, in the first scene we see Deadpool using crazy acrobatics as he battles it out with some bad guys on a freeway. Another noteworthy part of the opening scene is Deadpool’s crazy gun slinging skills. As he gets cornered with limited amount of bullets left, he manages to defeat all of the enemies, shooting and even

taking down three guys with just one shot. The CGI was invaluable and made the movie all the more worthy to watch.

Now, being the bloody and violent movie that it is, the prosthetics is a vital contributor to how effective the film would be. Of course it did, since the makeup, the fake blood, and all the fake body parts flying all over the place felt incredibly realistic.

The soundtrack was composed of different classic music and revived hits such as Angel of the Morning by Juice Newton, plus some modern music like Flo Rida’s G.D.F.R. Judging from the lineup of songs, the music was well balanced with old and modern music that adequately fit each scene.

In the aspect of cinematography, Hollywood grade cinematography is never wrong. Right camera angles to depict the right feelings of each scene is effectively observed. Casting-wise, Ryan Reynolds, the same guy who portrayed Deadpool in its first onscreen appearance in the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, managed to redeem himself in the second depiction.

Last but not the least, the plot was condensed considering the duration of the movie being only an hour and a half. Although the plot was jeopardized considering the time constraint, most fan would agree that it is a good depiction of the comic book seeing that it did not deviate much from Deadpool’s origin story.

The super superhero movie.Deadpool is a good action,

comedy, romance, sci-fi movie but then again, it is much more than that. It is also a film that gives hidden values to those who would try to further understand it. Topics such as discrimination based on the physical appearance was tackled. The idea that physical traits is supposedly secondary when it comes to love is also pointed out. And lastly, Deadpool’s type of personality could impose that amidst all the cruelty and hardships we would undergo in life, life should be treated lightly and we should always stay positive and give maximum effort in everything we do.

Adamson, school of appointed student-leaders?

GOODBYE COACH!/P4ADU EDUCATION/P3

ADAMSON SCHOOL/P2

Don’t be surprised if that is the title of this article. The

RSO (Recognised Student Organization) Elections have already been done, and I guess, you are still puzzled about how these new sets of officers acquired their positions. And worst, you have never met any of them.

I believe that it is an integral part during elections that we have aspiring students who want to lead their respective organizations. But one main

problem of some RSOs is that the students don’t have several options to choose from. Some aspirants are just appointed by their superiors. So, the students don’t have a choice but to vote them.

It is embarassing that some officers are dubbed as recycled officers, and I hate to say that. But that’s the reality. Some students don’t initiate to lead their organizations. That’s how pathetic our students are. There are some, but they are not qualified - maybe

they have worst grades, etc. That said, the superiors may just choose academically excellent students to lead their organizations. But there is no assurance that those students have the necessary leadership skills, passion to put their organizations on the map.

I also learned that there are some RSOs that implement a purely “democratic-type” of organization (that’s sarcasm, I hope you get the point). The superiors prefer incoming

third year (or fourth year for a five-year academic program) students to be the next executive officers. That means juniors, sophomores, and graduating students don’t have a chance, don’t have a right. Does that make any sense? Maybe they have their own agenda to serve.

It is unfortunate that some superiors have their personal preferences. They are very vocal of who they want to be in the

“AdU Education, where’s the heart?”

Education with a heart,’ ito ‘di umano ang tagline ng Adamson

University.

Goodbye Coach!

Seryosong usapan ‘to mga beh ha. ‘Wag masyadong maligalig.

May isa pa pala akong napansin! Ewan, e-mail niyo na lang ako for the confirmation haha.

During that time, may nahagilap ako from a certain athlete na kapag hindi makapasok sa top

Graduation Pic pa mga Beh

Dear Sir Security Head

2

ADAMSON SCHOOL/P1

turnstile.

If he wants to be respected by the students, he should implement those rules in a way na di kami nanliliit.

I hope I will see some improvements sa work ethics niya. Salamat.

executive positions of their organizations. If there are other students who also have an interest to hold those positions, they are regarded as oppositions. They are even pressured that if they win, they will not be supported by their respective departments. They will be discriminated. So, those students will be having no guts to push their ambitions. In a word, no healthy elections in their organizations take place.

That’s the current status of our RSOs. We can’t do anything but to accept and respect those appointed student-leaders. As a piece of advice, let’s just encourage them to do their best. They need that because we may

not know that they are only forced or even coerced into it.

I hope this will be a call to the Administration, especially to the OSA (Office for Student Affairs).

To conclude, it is the student-body that makes our organizations bad - which significantly affects our supreme student organization. So students, don’t be mad if the structure of AUSG (Adamson University Student Government) is not a student government, but a student council. Don’t be mad if the system of voting of executive officers of AUSG is not democratic, but parliamentary. Tayo kasi ang palpak.

Nasaan ang CLAYGO slogan sa Adamson?

Clean As You Go - this slogan is indeed popular among us. But in Adamson, it seems that this is not properly

observed. Inside the campus, we usually see some trash in the classrooms, corridors, walkway, etc. Ganun ba talaga tayo ka-baboy?

We can definitely say how disciplined the students are in a certain school if we take a look at its physical appearance. I can’t blame the janitors because I see them doing their jobs well sa pagwawalis at paglalampaso. I can feel their burden na mag-isa lang sila naglilinis sa isang classroom na puno ng bote, baso, styro, papel. Eh andami kayang classrooms sa isang floor. Joke time lang?

We know that some of you were raised in a well-established family at with yaya pa siguro. But we are in school and the primary thing that we should learn is discipline. The school is not ours. It is not our private room. We don’t have the right to throw our trashes anywhere. Come on guys, the trash bins are found every nook of the school.

It is very irritating that whenever we enter our classrooms, ang daming kalat! We all need a conducive place for a healthy academic interaction. Bakit ba sa classroom kayo kumakain? Canteen lang? Are you aware na bawal kumain sa classrooms? It can be a major offense sa OSA-Discipline, klasmeyts.

What we have to develop right now is the culture of discipline talaga. So di ka tao, klasmeyt? Joking. I hope aware din dyan ang mga prof para masabihan din nila ang students nila before and after ng class until that thing becomes a habit sa lahat ng students.

ADU EDUCATION/P1

May kasabihan ngang ‘Every achiever is a product of a teacher.”

Poser daw yun. Edi okay. Kahit taga-Parañaque rin ang friend kong yun. Lol.

Meron. Merong forever at alam niyo yan.

Hindi natatapos sa “It’s not you, it’s me.” at “She had

me at my worst. You had me at my best.

May gagawin ba ako?

Kaya

that time, blinock ko na siya. Afternoon, tumawag

Worst performance talaga nila ang game against the Lady Spikers. Bakit kaya?

After the game against the Lady Bulldogs, ikinagulat ng lahat ang biglang pag-resign ni Meneses.

Na k a k a b a l i k t a d ng sikmura ang kabantutan ng ilan

Keep it up po. Mas okay na yan. Sobrang convenient.
