As a young Hebrew School student growing up in the 1950’s, we were introduced to the Holocaust by viewing the movie, Night and Fog. It was a no-holds-barred documentary of

the results of Hitler’s extermination of 11 million innocent human beings including 6 million Jews. it was raw and stark as corpses were bulldozed into pits for “burial.” (It is no longer considered age appropriate for young students if it ever was!) But it raised the unavoidable question, “How was such a thing possible? How could Hitler have convinced so many Germans and other Europeans to lose their moral compasses in such a hideous way to allow and enable the great tragedy of the 20th century?”These questions never left my thoughts and when i began to teach at Muhlenberg College and was invited to join with the head of the Department of religion, a lutheran minister, in a team taught course about the Holocaust, we decided to explore these questions. Many of our students were in pre-professional studies---pre-law, pre-med, as well as in the arts and sciences. Our challenge became how people, just like themselves, in their very disciplines, became caught up in the furor and violence of Nazism. To introduce the subject, we showed the movie Triumph of the Will, directed by Leni Riefenstahl in 1935. Hitler had commissioned it as a propaganda film to “inspire the volk!” It was a staged, rehearsed film made to look spontaneous, put to marshal music as Hitler would arrive at a rally, descend by plane through the clouds like some great mythic eagle, to cheering crowds with waving banners all outstretched arms acclaiming Hitler, “Heil Hitler,” and “One people, One Nation, One Fuhrer!” Some historians claim that what they were witnessing was mass insanity, that somehow a collective madness had seized the Aryan people. Others attributed it to collective anger and resentment at the loss of national pride in the face of defeat after WWI. Economic theories suggest that joblessness and runaway inflation led to find a scapegoat for the peoples’ suffering. Or, a group of criminals had seized control of the powers of government. perhaps, all the above, and

more. But watchingTriumph of the Will was itself instructive. Midway through the movie, we noticed that many of the students were tapping their feet to the mesmerizing music. Almost against their will, they too were caught up in the “spirit of the moment.”This spirit struck me, as Elie Wiesel has said, full in the face, when i saw the rally in which Mr Trump asked the thousands of his cheering supporters to lift their arms in pledge to vote for him. Many attacked him for the appearance of bringing back the Nazi salute. Frankly, for me, that is the tip of the iceberg. The tone and tenor of this year’s political campaign has been much more terrifying. It’s parallels to the 1930s are too close. Hitler taught lessons unfolding before our very eyes.First, “the bigger the lie, the more people will believe it.” Continued on page 5...

A MESSAGE FROM ThE RABBI Rabbi Herbert N. BrockmanShould Clergy Talk Politics?: Dangers of Demagoguery

Join us for special shabbatot special guest speaker

Rev. Heidi B. NeumarkFriday, April 1, 7:30 p.m. “I’m a Lutheran pastor, but I’m not the same one I was six years ago.” says Heidi Neumark “That’s when our daughter was up late Googling family names and called out: Mom! Do you know you’re from a prominent Jewish family and your grandfather died in

a concentration camp? It’s on Wikipedia!” Within months, that Wikipedia footnote sent Neumark on a personal journey across the globe to search for her family roots – taking her from Germany to the Czech Republic, to Brazil and eventually to a Passover Seder in Los Angeles with newly found cousins.Hidden Inheritance: Family Secrets, Memory and Faith by Heidi B. Neumark (Abingdon Press, October 6, 2015), takes readers on Neumark’s journey into an unimagined past with life-changing repercussions for her future.

is it April already? How did that happen? Thankfully, your Cantor has been teaching the Jr. Choir Mah Nishtanah (the five questions) and in the Pre-School, “One morning when pharoah woke in his bed, there were frogs in his bed and frog on his head . . . . .” etc.

You know the rest. What a special time Pesach is for family. The wonderful tunes are like the smell of chicken soup and brisket. They are food for our soul. They awaken our dreams and sprinkle magic into the ears of our children. incidentally, this is also the time of year when i, your Cantor, present to you our annual concert and Fundraiser! At CMI we are blessed to be surrounded by Klezmer Music thanks to David Chevan and the musicians who volunteer from all over Connecticut and come together to form the “Nu Haven Kapelye”. Yet, they are just the tip of the iceberg of a Jewish music phenomena that is sweeping our communities. Klezmer is a Yiddish word that comes from the combination of the Hebrew words Kley (instrument) and Zemer (Song). It’s origins are from Ashkenazic Jews in Eastern Europe, but those continued on page 6...

pRESIdENT’S MESSAGEAlan lakinMany of you participated in focus groups or in other ways provided information for the Strategic planning committee to use in developing a long-range (3-5 year) strategic plan. it has taken some time to

put this plan together, but we are nearly complete with the project. in late February the proposed plan was presented to the full Board of Trustees. Coming out of that meeting were some great suggestions on some additions to the document. We are in the process of incorporating those changes into the strategic plan. We learned a lot from the information you provided – it created a long list of “to-do’s” for the Board and many of the committees. Most importantly, it helps to identify what is important to our members and why they belong to Congregation Mishkan israel, what might be done differently, and helps to define who we are as a congregation. The plan will be constantly reviewed – needs continued on page 5...

President’s Message continued from page 4change over time. This is a dynamic plan. The Board will be coming back out to all of you for input in the future. As we address issues that came out of this project, we know that new ideas and new needs will arise. i look forward to sharing many of the highlights of the plan with you in the near future. With spring upon us, events at Congregation Mishkan israel jump into high gear. Our high school students spent a March weekend in Washington DC, including a visit to the Religious Action Center. This program with participation by Temple Beth David of Cheshire and Temple Emmanuel of Orange, and Congregation Mishkan israel, is a great learning opportunity for our high school members. if you have a high school student at home, i encourage you to have them participate in this program this coming year. it is a wonderful opportunity for our high school students to connect with their Jewishness as well as with students from other reform congregations in the area. Some other events coming up this spring include a Brotherhood of Men and Women Table Talk on Jews in Baseball hosted by our own member, professor lawrence levine. i urge you all to come to the Cantor’s Concert on May 22. This year the concert features The Klezbos, an all women Klezmer band from New York City. And then plan to join the Brotherhood of Men and Women on June 4 for their annual Deli and Comedy night featuring Don Gavin. please watch your bulletin closely for more information on these and other events at CMi this Spring.

WElCOMiNG THE STRANGERThe Jewish Community Alliance for refugee Resettlement (JCARR) has been planning for our new refugee family with excitement, collaboration and incredible organization under the direction of Jean Silk, Coordinator. CMi is part of a joint effort with four other synagogues in the New Haven area that have joined together to work as one team. At the time of this writing we are waiting for the assignment of our family and most likely they have already arrived. Over 130 congregants from the five synagogues have volunteered to help on various committees: fundraising, welcoming, housing, employment, heath, household set up, cultural orientation, education, tutoring, transportation and finances. We look forward to meeting the family and sharing their arrival with you. it is hoped that JCARR will be ready within 3 to 6 months to welcome our second family. CMi has been well represented and we look forward to learning more about the process and how we can prepare for the families to come. please feel free to contact Sue Millen for more information at [email protected].

SOCIAl ACTION COMMITTEE IRIS - Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services Update

Rabbi’s Message continued from page 3Secondly, “violence attracts as many people as it repels.” We have begun to see the mistreatment of pickets at Trump rallies. it may only be a matter of time before real violence breaks out.Thirdly, “racial (or religious or national) impurity is undermining our once great nation.” The call to “make our nation great” is not the same as the “shining light on the hill” One is pessimistic and angry, the other optimistic and positive. What worries me most, however, is the silence that confronts these ideas when played out. The voices of decent people need to be raised forcefully against lies, racism, xenophobia and hate-filled rhetoric. It does attract even normal people and can turn them into a mob. people who would never act alone can become immersed in the power of the many. And the few can let loose a violence that we now know can spread dangerously. In the 1930’s, the voices were silent. The

churches, the judiciary, the professions and industrialists, even the competing politicians did not speak out forthrightly. As Edmund Burke reminded us, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Should clergy talk politics? There may be divergent views about how to solve some of our economic, racial, environmental and international issues that challenge our nation. But lying is not a solution. Hate is not. Discrimination is not. Encouraging violence against those who disagree is not. And when we encounter these we must speak out. We are fighting for the very soul of our nation and that is a very religious thing for clergy to do.

Cantor’s Notes continued from page 4Jews didn’t create their music in a vacuum, they gathered their tunes from an amalgam of musical styles they heard. Their music came from gypsies flung across Eastern Europe and from tunes that echoed off the Carpathian Mountains, to name just a few. Klezmer, like all musical styles has many forms, many devotees who are constantly reinventing the medium, giving it a fresh approach and new dynamic sense of purpose. This year we present to you just such a group. i am thrilled beyond measure to tell you that we will be hosting the All-Female Klezmer ensemble called “The Isle of Klezbos”. They are a collection of brilliant musicians whose home is New York City. The Daily News, in a review, said this about them, “Klezmer came from Eastern European Jews in the late 19th-century. But since 1998, the Klezbos ladies have made Yiddish hits hip again, by fusing the old-timey sound with jazz, reggae and swing. . . the intoxicating mix of a hundred years worth of classic and original klezmer, latin, jazz and film music that this shapeshifting, jam-oriented band plays, and you have one of New York’s most exciting groups in any style.” Edge, New York also had this to say, “The hook for this group may be that they are all women — about as anti-traditional as you can get. But that quickly became irrelevant. These ladies are damned good musicians, period.” Now doesn’t that just make your ears perk up in anticipation? So, ready your comfy clothes and dancing shoes. “The Isle of Klezbos” will bring you to your feet and have you dancing around the social hall like Zero Mostel in Fiddler on the Roof! So, what do you need to do? Well, first you need to SAVE THE DATE! Sunday, May 22nd, 2016. Doors will open at 3:30 PM and the festivities will begin at 4 pM! Finally, your Cantor is not just presenting “isle of Klezbos” for a splendid afternoon of musical pleasure, as that is what it surely is, but more importantly it is CMi’s one and only Annual Fundraiser. it is an all out celebration of our diversity, inclusiveness and community. We are your extended family and we need your support. Save the date, bring the kids, invite your friends, but most importantly come, let your CMi family feel the love so we can keep doing the good work we do; for another 175 years.

RElIGIOUS SChOOl NEWSMichelle GoldsteinReligious School DirectorFor passover our whole school gathers as one community and celebrates the Exodus from slavery in Egypt. The tables are

covered with symbols of the holiday and the story of our ancestors past. All the while, we are confronted by it’s future. The Seder is so bittersweet, the remembrance of oppression and the joy of hope, of a new beginning and of our continuation. The Seder for me is especially sweet because it is participatory and inclusive for every student. The rabbi and Cantor take us into the seder bringing it to life for us all. Continued on page 11...

Susan Witten NasonEarly Childhood DirectorWe had a very busy March. Our Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success.

Thank you to all who volunteered during that time, and to all who bought books. We sold a lot of books, so in return we are able to get new books for our own library. You can never have too many books! We are busy getting ready for spring. We are thinking about what to plant in our garden, and learning about what it will take to make our garden grow.We had a loud, fun, and tasty Purim- with our ra’ashanim, (noise makers), crazy costumes, and delicious hamantaschen. The word around school is, “i wish we had purim all year long!”This month we will be busy talking, reading, and singing all about passover. We will hold our mini Seders in some of the classes, and the children will be making Seder plates, Kiddush cups, and other things to complete their Seder tables. We are hoping that April showers, (bring May flowers!) still allow us plenty of time to play outdoors. Our Tzedakah project for April is collecting for the Make a Wish Foundation. The Make a Wish Foundation arranges experiences described as “wishes” to children with life-threatening medical conditions. We will be helping a local child fulfill their wish. if you would like to contribute, you can make a check out to the Foundation, (and bring it downstairs, or leave it in my mailbox upstairs), or come down and add to our Tzedakah box. We will also be selling raffle tickets, and raffling off some nice items, to be used locally.Thank you , as always, for supporting our Tzedakah projects.

pE’Ah GARdEN The Mitzvah of Feeding the hungrylove to garden but don’t have a bright sunny space in your own yard? Don’t have time to commit to a garden plot but still want to help feed the hungry? The Pe’ah Garden (located near the upper parking lot) is looking for new gardeners this year! if you’re nervous about the time commitment, consider teaming up with another couple or family or one of our existing experienced gardeners. First, we study the Jewish sources from which the idea of pe’ah, leaving the corners (Pe’ah) of the field for the poor and the strangers, comes from. Each gardener is then given a plot. We ask you to plant half of that plot with produce we’ll donate to local food pantries and soup kitchens (we’ll provide the seedlings) and the other half you can plant for your own use. if you’re not interested in gardening we also need volunteers willing to take our harvests from the temple to a local soup kitchen once per week for the summer months (we can work around summer vacations!). If you want to help we’ll find a job for you. Planting will happen in April-May and the garden closes for the year in Oct-Nov. Last year’s gardeners donated over 2,500 pounds of beautiful organic produce! Please join us on April 3 at 11:00 a.m. for to learn more about the principles of pe’ah and mitzvah of feeding the hungry and find out how you can participate. please contact Jennifer pope at: [email protected] for more information.

To all of our Customers, Members, Friends, and Family,

The Helping Hands Community Thrift Store & Furniture Bank has helped people in need across Connecticut since 2010, including

people with disabilities, transitioning from homelessness or military service or displaced by fire. Now we are hoping for a helping hand in return from the community after fire wiped

through its West Haven warehouse.

Early in the morning on August 10th we had a destructive fire in our West Haven warehouse. The majority of our inventory was destroyed. This is not only a devastating loss to us, but also to

the families we help in the charities we raise money for.

We need your help. We need your donations. We need furniture, clothing, knick knacks, and housewares. Anything that you could

donate we need.

Your donations are tax deductible and you can choose what charity you would like to your donation to benefit.

Members, please ask your donors and supporters to make donations to help out. Donors and shoppers please go through

your gently used items and see if you have anything you can spare. Please tell your friends and family that we need your help.

We need to restock so we can continue to help people in need.
