Dear Parents, Guardians, & Friends, May you all enjoy the celebration at Easter. We hope that you and your family can attend one of the Easter Masses at our local parishes. The times are enclosed at the back. Could you keep the Year 11 students in your prayers as they approach the “business end of the educational season”. Their hard work will be rewarded. On behalf of these students, can I thank the staff for their dedication over this critical period, as many staff are coming in over Easter and staying late after school. Can I thank the community for their support as we are once again over-subscribed with applicants for the upcoming Year 7. This will be the first year group with the increased intake and we will look to continue to provide for the growing demand. We are unfortunately saying goodbye to our longest serving teacher, Mrs Woolley. She is retiring after dedicating thirty years to All Saints’. She started while I was still at school! Throughout her time as Senior Assistant Headteacher in charge of pastoral support, we have consistently been graded as good via Ofsted. This is a testament to her professional service and leadership. She will be sadly missed but we wish her every success as she prepares for more grandchildren. Regards, Mr McNally Headteacher On Wednesday 25th of February, All Saints' first Bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards were presented at Turf Moor to the Year 11 pupils who completed the award last year. The pupils had to complete four different sections including skill, physical, volunteering and the expedition in order to qualify. They completed the award by doing activities such as coaching younger pupils, community work, basketball, boxing and many more in order to achieve the standards. In addition to this, all the pupils completed their practice expedition in the Trough of Bowland in July and their assessment weekend in Goosnargh. They camped, cooked and hiked carrying all their kit in the sun, wind and rain and were commended by the assessors for their teamwork and for how much they developed during the expedition. All the pupils had a great time. Well done to all this year’s pupils and good luck to the new Year 10 cohort who are beginning their Duke of Edinburgh award. There are still a few places remaining, so see Mr Briggs if you are interested. Mr T Briggs CL Science April 2016 Duke of Edinburgh

On Monday 25th January, fifty one Year 10 students left school for Castlerigg Manor Retreat Centre for the week. This is an annual trip for the school which is always very popular with students and staff alike. The question on everybody's mind was, 'What do you do on a retreat?' The answer is quite simple, you get to know yourself and others a little better and through that we reflect on God's part in our life. Each day had a different theme, on Tuesday the theme was, 'Loved'. The day was full of different exercises to help us reflect on how we are loved in many different ways. Wednesday's theme was 'Reconciled' with a number of activities to help the group focus. The day concluded with a lovely Reconciliation Service in which all children had the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Thursday’s theme was 'Called to Serve' and the day was spent preparing to celebrate Mass in the afternoon. Everybody contributed to the Mass. It was a lovely celebration and a great way to conclude our work. It wasn't all work as there was plenty of free time and games. When the weather allowed, the group went on walks to experience the beauty of the Keswick countryside and Derwentwater Lake. On Thursday night we had a disco and everyone enjoyed a good night; it was the perfect way to celebrate the end of a great week. The retreat leaders were Trisha, Misha, Alex, Anke and Lizzie and they all commented on the behaviour and the positive approach to the retreat from the young people from All Saints' . The staff were proud of the students for the way they conducted themselves. A big ‘Thank You’ goes to Mrs Atherton for all her hard work in organising the week and giving so much time to enable things to happen. So now we start the preparations for Castlerigg 2017! All Saints’ in the Movies – The Truants

Parking

We have received some complaints from local residents regarding inconsiderate and sometimes dangerous parking by parents. Not only is it important for us to continue our

good relationship with the local community, the health and safety of our pupils is also paramount. With that in mind, we would like to remind parents not to park on the school

drive, on double yellow lines, or on the zigzags outside school. Please be considerate when picking up and/or dropping off your child.

Thank you for your continued support, Mr. McNally, Headteacher

During half term, All Saints’ was transformed into a movie set for the day to record the opening sequence for a short film: ‘The Truants’. A group of enthusiastic and creative Year 11 students volunteered to star in the movie as extras, braving the cold weather, to shoot action scenes in the playground.

Teenagers from across Lancashire participated in the filming but our students clearly shone as they were selected to feature in a close up section with the main actors. Up and coming director Aaron Dunleavy, who credits Hollywood director Danny Boyle as one of his supporters, was really impressed with the dedication and professionalism of our students. ‘The Truants’ will be screened at film festivals in Europe this summer.

Friends of All Saints’ Have you ever thought about joining a PTA? Do you think you can help raise money for school? Come along and find out more about our Friends of All Saints’. They are a valuable asset to the school raising

much needed funds and are always looking for new volunteers brimming with fresh ideas. The next meeting is Monday 25th April at 6.00pm in school – new members always welcome!

Easter Cards for the sick and housebound

As part of All Saints’ response to the Pope’s Year of Mercy, students have been very busy at lunchtime making cards which will be sent to all the local parishes for distribution to the sick and housebound. Pupil Chaplains have been helping younger students during lunchtime Chaplaincy time.

Everybody has enjoyed making the cards and we hope that those who receive them will feel a little bit brighter. This is another fine example of All Saints’ students giving up their time for others.

Assembly on Forgiveness and Reforming Prisoners The Pupil Chaplains led an assembly on forgiveness and prisoner reform to raise awareness of the Year of Mercy. During the Forgiveness and Reconciliation themed week, Pupil Chaplains attended each house group assembly and spoke about the need for forgiveness to those who commit crimes. Information was also shared about reforming prisoners and teaching them skills that they can use in the outside world, in a bid to help them not to reoffend again. Most importantly at the end of the assembly we prayed for the prisoners, families and those who work with them.

Chaplaincy News Continued…

Stations of the Cross During Lent, all classes have attended a Stations of the Cross service in the Chapel. Instead of the traditional Stations of the Cross, the students have spent time reflecting in length on just four of the Stations. This has been accompanied by music and a Powerpoint display to help the students focus. During the service each student has had the opportunity to post a prayer on the cross, on the notice board, at the back of the Chapel. The intentions have been prayed for at the end of every service.

The Mercy Door Arrives at All Saints’ The Mercy Door is travelling round the Diocese

stopping at all Schools. It arrived at All Saints’ on St Patrick’s Day, 17th March. The door was made by students from Thornleigh Salesian College in Bolton and is intended to help schools to celebrate the Year of Mercy. Every school is having an assembly on the Mercy Door and all students must walk through it. We have had two special assemblies in school to celebrate the Year of Mercy and allow students to walk through the door. We must not forget the good work that the students are involved in as a response to the Year of Mercy. Pope Francis has declared this year an extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy to encourage the Church to reach out to the millions of people who are in need in the world today. Pupil Chaplains are working hard to help us, as a community, to reach out and understand the needs of the wider world.

Home to School Transport – Consultation about change

Fears have been raised that transport subsidy cuts of up to £15 a month could stop families being able to send their children to faith schools. Lancashire County Council is consulting on scrapping ‘discretionary support’ subsidies for pupils who attend a faith

school which is not the nearest school to their home from September 2016.

Under the plans pupils will no longer receive any assistance from this date unless

they are from ‘low income’ families.

The consultation runs until Sunday 10th April and we would encourage parents to have their say about the intended change on-line via the Council's website using this link:

https://www.snapsurveys.com/wh/s.asp?k=145442626666

Alternatively you may send responses to:- Denominational Transport Consultation, Pupil Access Team, PO Box 61, County Hall, Preston PR1 8RJ.

The closing date for all responses will be midnight on Sunday 10 April 2016.

On Thursday 25th February, a cheque for £461.33 was presented to Cancer Research UK during school assembly. The money was raised from various fundraising activities including a non-uniform day in school where pupils donate £1 for the privilege of wearing their own clothes in school. During the assembly, representatives from Cancer Research UK spoke to pupils about the valuable work undertaken by the charity and explained to pupils how the money raised would assist the charity. Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Revision is one of the essential ingredients to securing a pupil’s success in the external examinations. To assist Year 11 pupils with their preparation for the summer examinations in the week after half term, they experienced a week of lessons where revision techniques were taught within their subject lessons. We started the week with a talk about how the brain works and pupils watched clips illustrating how to study and tips from young people who had recently been through the process. During form time, their tutors advised them on how to organise themselves for examinations. We also have in place an after school revision timetable. This has been organised to run until the very last exam. Pupils were given their own copies informing them which subject is on each night and were instructed to complete the front of their booklet so they know which subject they took in every option group.

Option A taught Monday period 5 and Thursday period 4

Option B taught Wednesday period 4 and Friday period 2

Option C taught Wednesday 3 and period Friday period 5

Option D taught Tuesday period 4 and Wednesday period 5

Option E Maths /English

English and maths teachers will tell you which subject to go to in your lesson.

Biology/Chemistry/Physics

Science staff will tell you which subject you will be revising when you arrive in the department after school

Revision sessions run every afternoon and the timetable has been organised in such a way that all pupils should be attending, every afternoon, to cover all the subjects they take. The full timetable can be found on the school website in the Learning Programmes section. Here are the first three weeks after Easter:

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Mrs Woolley this Easter, after an impressive thirty years of service to the school. Mrs Woolley has been at All Saints’ since September 1986 when she joined as Teacher of Geography and French.

In 1995, after leaving the Geography department behind and settling fully in the MFL department, she also became Head of Upper School and she was later appointed Senior Assistant Headteacher in September 2007. She has been a valued member of the MFL department as well as both the Pastoral and Senior Leadership Teams and she will be sorely missed. During her time here she has not only been responsible for the pastoral systems in school but she also seen, and taught, different generations of the same family as they have passed through the school. In addition to this, Mrs Woolley has both led and accompanied many trips including the Year 11 Prom, Alton Towers and also residential visits to France, Germany, New York and Castlerigg.

Mrs Woolley has always been able to see the good in each and every one of our pupils and she has worked hard to bring out the best in them, helping to ensure that they could “shine”. Although we are very sad to see her go, we wish her all the best for the future and we hope that she will enjoy a long and happy retirement.
