As the calendar hits April, we get to my favorite time of the year here at the Club. Not only is everything turning green and the flowers and trees budding, but the activity at the Club takes off. Despite a relatively mild winter, I suspect we will all welcome the warmer temperatures of spring.
In April, our patio will open for dining. This is always a great place for a wonderful meal at
the end of a long day. The golf course activity will quickly grow as the South Course once again opens in mid-April, men’s and women’s GAP Teams start matches, the Wednesday Men’s Twilight League gets started and both men and women have their opening events. Registration for many of the annual tournaments will get started, so be sure to watch the schedule.
On the Racquets and Swim side of the Club, the outside courts will have their maintenance
finished and be ready to open and our USTA teams begin play. Pool and Swim Team activity is already being planned and it won’t be long until the pool opens in May.
So come out and enjoy your Club. Your Committees have been hard at work planning
another great season and our staff is ready to make this another wonderful season at our Club. Thanks for reading. Joseph F. Hacker, IIIPresident

Spring GreetingsTraditionally, April is when outdoor activities
begin to take precedent over those of an indoor nature. Although the winter was not too harsh, spring will be no less welcome. Men’s and Ladies’ organized golf activities get started and Tennis activity shifts outside. Work to prepare the Club’s facilities for the upcoming summer season also begins and, in general, your use of the Club becomes more frequent. This month’s Bulletin contains all the detail on spring programs, events and activities. While I hope you’ll take a moment to review it thoroughly, it seems that once again, I have a multitude of topics that are probably best shared as “bullet points”. Recognizing that all of them apply to some, and some of them apply to all, please read carefully to determine which are important to you.• Beginning Tuesday, April 5th, full Clubhouse
operations resume. This includes the return of daily lunch service in Café 1901 and the Pub.
• With the way this year’s spring weather has been cooperating, you will find that the outdoor patios will open for dining very soon. We’ll keep you posted.
• The 2016 Club Events Calendar has been posted to the website. If you require a “hard copy”, please stop by the Front Desk and we’ll be happy to print one for you.
• The 2016 By-laws/Rules Handbook is also on the website and is in the process of being published. It will be distributed ASAP by placing one copy in the locker of each Senior member. Additional copies will be available at the Front Desk.
• The roster of members is no longer published in printed form, but can be accessed through the website. A hard copy is also available at the Front Desk for member use, but it never leaves the Front Desk.
• We are making a big push for all members to begin receiving their end of month Club statements electronically. Aside from the “green” aspect of saving paper, the monthly billing process is very cumbersome and costly. There are a variety of electronic methods that you may use to keep your account current as well.
• The same goes for the monthly Bulletin. If you aren’t receiving this electronically, please consider changing. When you download it to your screen or mobile device, you get the added benefit of viewing it in glorious full color! And, it costs us nothing to
print or deliver . . .• Mentioning mobile devices triggered a reminder to,
when at the Club, please be sure to keep yours in the silent mode. Additionally, it is worth noting that this “silent” spirit extends to all electronic devices, in all areas of the Club (including a child’s game in any and all dining areas). The voice use of cellular telephones is prohibited at the Club. If you are checking email, voice mail or texting, please use discretion being particularly sensitive to your surroundings. If we see you using a cell phone inappropriately on the property, we will remind you of the policy and ask you to discontinue use. Members are urged to inform their guests of this rule. Please . . . don’t shoot the messenger.
• The South Course opens for the season on Tuesday, April 12th.
• The Ladies’ 18-Hole organization will have their kick-off meeting the prior week; the 9-Hole Ladies get started on the 13th. Men’s activity also gets started with GAP matches on the 10th. The Men’s opening golf event has been pushed later in the month and will be held on Saturday the 30th.
• Now that the golf season is underway, please keep in mind two simple thoughts. Carts damage turf, so be mindful of how and where you drive yours. Also, play “ready golf” and keep up with the group ahead of you!
• Preparations are underway to ready the outdoor tennis courts for another season. Several of our clay courts are already open and the remainder should be open soon. The grass courts won’t open until May.
• With April begins a new food minimum cycle. If you are one of the few who failed to fulfill their minimum in the past, you may wish to reconsider how you have selected to satisfy your obligation. Perhaps switching to the prepaid annual option would be more effective.
• The Golf Course Snack Bars will be open on the “honor system” for the first few weeks of the season until activity picks up when normal staffing will occur.
• As your use of the Club increases, so does the traffic in the parking lots. Drivers - please slow down; Pedestrians - use caution! Traffic in the parking lots and drive increases considerably this time of year.April promises to be an exciting month with lots
going on. I hope you’ll find the time to enjoy your Club. Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you at the Club.

Our Tuesday, April 5th selection is R.J. Palacio’s beautiful and heartwarming book, Wonder. August (Auggie) Pullman is ten years old and going to go to a real school for the first time. Born with several genetic abnormalities which caused pronounced facial disfiguration, Auggie has had 27 reconstructive operations but his face is still so disfigured that people either stare or turn away when they see him and kids often are scared. His mom has always homeschooled him, but now he is going to be a fifth grader at Beecher Prep and is panicked. He is smart, funny and nice and just wants to be ordinary and to have friends, but he knows how people react when they see him. Can Auggie make it in a regular school? Can he convince kids that he is just like them but with a unique face? Will anyone want to sit at his lunch table or work on a project with him? He has one ace in the hole - his loving, caring parents who can turn disturbing situations into high comedy. They even made a funny story about a pompous nurse who fainted when she saw his face when he was born. Palacio beautifully captures the voices of fifth graders and teenagers and has them, as well as Auggie, as narrators as they tell about his first year at Beecher Prep. Their reactions show that being different not only affects the child, it affects the whole family and even the people in the school. And it will affect you, the reader. You might even cry but are certain to wonder at how much better you feel for having read Auggie’s story. Join us on the 5th in the Ladies’ Lounge as Sandy Hobbs leads the discussion of this wholesome, thought-provoking book.
Our May selection is The Accidental Empress, Allison Pataki’s captivating novel about the glittering Hapsburg Court and “Sisi,” the fifteen-year-old who inadvertently became the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph. This is the story of one of the most beautiful women of her day and her husband who was the head of one of the most powerful royal families of the nineteenth century. This is a royal love story you won’t want to miss.

WILMINGTON COUNTRY CLUB GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES

It will probably come as new news to many of our Wilmington Country Club members that we in the Grounds Department have been experiencing some somewhat bitter/sweet changes within our management personnel over the past six months. We are very pleased to be able to report that, even though we have lost two outstanding and extremely well liked members of our team, we are confident that our current opportunity to largely promote from within will allow us to continue to maintain our standards of superior performance and presentation.
Zach Nicoludis, our South Course Superintendent of the past four plus years, has recently moved on accepting a position as one of the Central Region Agronomists with the United States Golf Association. He will be headquartered in Columbus, Ohio and his regional duties will include site visitations to the golf courses of that and several other mid-western states. Although not expansively publicized at the time, Jason Frey, our North Course Assistant Superintendent, accepted one of the Superintendent positions at Penn National Golf Club at the end of last year’s playing season. In both cases, the opportunities of career advancement were most advantageous for these two valued employees and we sincerely wish them well for the future.
Nick Larrimore, our previous North Course Superintendent, will now shift responsibilities to the South Course and Tony Kowalski, our prior South Course Assistant Superintendent, will now take over the North Course Superintendent duties. Our recent hire from Hillendale Country Club, Sean Whiston, will serve as North Course Assistant Superintendent and we will seek to hire a replacement South Course Assistant as soon as we possibly can.
Nick Larrimore has been with Wilmington Country Club since May 2010. Nick’s previous golf course employment, primarily occurring prior to and during summer breaks during his education at Penn State University, included Cavalier Country Club, Rehoboth Beach Country Club, Kennett Square Golf and Country Club, followed by a Merion Golf Club summer internship. Following graduation from Penn State, WCC was fortunate in attracting Nick to our position of Assistant Superintendent of our North Course and he was promoted to Superintendent of that course in September 2011.
Tony Kowalski came to us in April 2012 accepting our South Assistant position which also included the responsibilities of Irrigation Manager for the entire WCC facility. Tony is also a graduate of Penn State University and his golf course experience includes The Golf Club of Washington, Saint Clair Country Club, Nemacolin Country Club, Oakmont Country Club, and Rolling Hills Country Club.
Sean Whiston is our most recent hire coming to us from Hillendale Country Club. Sean is a graduate of The University of Maryland and his previous golf course experience includes Light House Sound, Maryland Golf and Country Club and then as an Assistant Superintendent at Hillendale following his college graduation.
Nick and Tony have both proven their capabilities and dedication to Wilmington Country Club over the past several years and we are confident that Sean will live up to the same standards. These young men, along with the other managers of our Grounds Department . . . Magdalena, Peter, Ric, and Scott . . . will provide sound and committed leadership for a larger team dedicated to the pride and enjoyment of the members and guests of this Club.

Racquets NewsEd McQuillin, Director of Racquets
April is the beginning of our outdoor tennis season. Our Opening Ladies’ Tennis Event is on Friday, April 15th with doubles drills from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a light lunch. We will also be conducting two half day, preseason tennis camps on Wednesday, April 13th and Thursday, April 14th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
We are holding our first in a while full day Mixed Tennis Camp on Saturday, April 9th. The schedule is 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on court, lunch and back on court from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This full day tennis camp will get you ready for the season and provide a lot of information to use directly in your matches. Limited space is available, so sign up early.
We will be fielding 21 teams in the Wilmington, Philadelphia and USTA Leagues. The Ladies’ Wilmington and Philadelphia Leagues begin the week of April 18th. The USTA Leagues begin in April as well.
Wilmington Country Club has again been selected as a premier facility by the USTA/Middle States section. We are the only country club in the region to be selected for this award.
The US National Junior Squash Doubles will be held April 8th-10th at the Club. Many of the best junior squash players in the country, including some of our own, will be playing in boys, girls and mixed divisions in the under 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19s. Come out and watch our juniors battle for a National Title.
Congratulations to our 3.0 Ladies’ USTA Team (Captains Rebecca Collins and Rachel Heinle) who won the indoor league and qualified for the State Championships in July.
See you on the courts. Upcoming Racquets Events

Wilmington Country Club’s “A” Doubles Squash team won the Philadelphia Squash Racquets Association Squash Doubles League over Philadelphia Cricket Club. The team won by one point! Jack Wyant and Ed Chilton lost a very tight match 3-1; 15-13, 10-15, 15- 14, 15-14 against Gilly Lane and Parth Sharma. Tim Porter and Todd Anderson came through and won 3-1; 15-11, 14-15, 15-14, 15-13 over Steve Gregg and Duncan Pearson. Since games won and lost were even, they had to go to points, which WCC won 112-111. Additional team members, Scott Simonton and Alex Davis, helped to secure the teams position into the finals.
