It is one of the Salem Chamber’s biggest networking events of the year, bringing together many business professionals and community leaders with the chance for one lucky person to win $1,000.00. Salem Area Safety Council Update

Join us as we celebrate on Friday, April 15th, 2016 at the Salem Community Center for our an-

nual Safety Council Awards Banquet. The buffet lunch will begin promptly at 11:30 a.m. Over fifty local busi-nesses and organizations will receive recognition and certificates from the Division of Safety & Hygiene in the following categories: 100% Award: Presented to the company that

works the entire year without a lost-time injury or illness

Achievement Award: Presented to the company that decreases its incident rate by at least 25% from the previous year

Group Award: Presented to the company with the lowest incident rate in each group

Special Award: Presented to those companies that accumulate at least 500,000 hours and worked at least six months without a lost-time injury

Motivational speaker and humorist Kay Frances will speak on “A Funny Thing About Stress”. The deadline to make your reservation is Tuesday, April 12th by Noon. Safety Council monthly meetings are a great time to network and meet new people, as well as learn vital information on important safety related topics. Destination Excellence The Ohio BWC is offering FREE seminars across the state of Ohio to introduce businesses and organiza-tions to Destination: Excellence,

their bundle of programs that can help improve work-place safety, injured worker care, and lower workers’ compensation costs. As an added bonus by attending a seminar, your company can receive safety training credit for BWC’s Safety Council Rebate Program. At the seminar, you will hear real-life examples from fellow employers who have achieved improved safety and large savings with the Destination: Excellence pro-grams. Whistle While You Work! Grab your brooms, gloves, rakes, and

your clippers and your leaf blowers as

the Salem Beautification Committee gets

together on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016 at

9:00 a.m. at McCulloch Park on East

State Street, as we spruce up the city for the spring

and summer season. Don’t forget to label your personal

items.

Small and tall flower planters are still available in

the downtown for $25.00 for the “Adopt A Planter”

program. A marker will be placed in each planter with

the donor’s name. The donor may add “in honor of, or

in memory of” an organization or loved one. The Salem

Beautification Committee will purchase the flowers

and plant them in May. If you are interested, please

Rock Out With the Salem Chamber!

The Salem Chamber is “Pumping up the Volume” as we present the Battle of the Bands. This new event will

take place on Saturday, June 11th, 2016 during the Salem Super Cruise, in the Salem Chamber’s parking lot. Come and listen to some great music and vote for your favorite band. Participants will have a chance to win prizes as well as “bragging rights”. Bands will be judged by age group. Are you prepared for the next steps in the new workers’ comp billing process? True-up coming in July

Ohio private employers have adjusted well to the new way BWC charges for workers’ compensation coverage. Last year’s change to prospective billing brought a much-needed move to the standard insurance industry practice of charging premiums in advance of extending coverage. Employers are now enjoying a number of benefits of the new billing system, including more flexible payment options, better customer service and a $1 billion premium credit provided by BWC to avoid double-billing employers during the switch. However, the transition process is not fully complete. The payroll true-up (true-up) is coming in July. True-up is a new process that requires employers to report their actual payroll for the previous policy year and reconcile any differences in premium paid. This is an important step that is necessary for BWC to accurately calculate your premium. It’s also critically important to maintaining your policy and your participation in your current rating plan or discount programs.* You must complete the true-up report even if your payroll for the year matches the estimate you receive from BWC. Your policy year 2015 payroll true-up notice will be sent July 1 and your report will be due by August 15. Reports must be submitted online at bwc.ohio.gov or by phone at 1-800-644-6292. Please keep in mind our call center may be experiencing heavy call volumes during the final weeks before the August 15 due date, attributing to longer wait times. We encourage you to create an e-account that allows you to manage your policy, pay bills and complete the payroll true-up. Learn how to create an e-account here, and visit bwc.ohio.gov to get started. Please contact our call center if you already have an e-account but don’t remember your password or are otherwise unable to access your account. A number of videos, webinars and other resources about prospective billing are available at bwc.ohio.gov. *BWC will remove employers from their current rating plan or discount program if it does not receive a payroll true-up by the due date. Any outstanding payroll true-ups will render the employer ineligible for participation in future rating plans or discount programs until the all outstanding payroll true-ups are complete.

Burchfield Homestead Society 2016 EVENTS

Annual Meeting Attendance = Membership in Burchfield Homestead Society

Inspiration and Preservation of Charles E. Burchfield's Time in Salem are the theme for this year's

Burchfield Homestead Society activities.

At 2 p.m., Sunday, April 10, at Fred Naragon's law office, 248 East State Street, David Schwartz of the

Salem Preservation Society will talk about Salem in 1916. The city that year was part of Charles

Burchfield's most productive, creative time in Salem. He painted some of his best known works between

1915 and 1917. Places in and around Salem from that era inspired Burchfield into the 1960s.

This public program is part of the society's annual meeting. The $10 admission charge serves as

attendees' membership dues for the year. Thus, attendance = membership in an organization that

honors Salem's famous watercolorist. Join us for the meeting and stay for hors d'oeuvres and

refreshments.

Annual Arts & Artisans Festival

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, July 17, the museum at 867 East Fourth Street, Salem, and the grounds

near it will be open for local artists and artisans to show and sell their works. The $25 fee to participate

includes membership in the Burchfield Homestead Society.

Painting at Charlie's House

Painting at Charlie's House is a program for children from kindergarten through grade 4 to paint in the

backyard garden that inspired many of Charles Burchfield's watercolor masterpieces. From 1 to 2 p.m.

on Sunday, August 14, Barb Marra, an art teacher and Burchfield Homestead Society board member,

will provide guidance to children about painting sunflowers and other plants growing in the

professionally landscaped garden. The program will also briefly explain Burchfield's technique and

unique depictions of Salem early in the 20th century. Children and their parents will be encouraged to

explore the Burchfield Homestead Museum and view the original Burchfield paintings on display at the

Salem Public Library.

Third Annual Trains, Trees & Treasures

Trains, Trees & Treasures will be held from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 19 and Sunday,

November 20 (the weekend before Thanksgiving) at two locations. This is the third annual holiday event

when the Burchfield Homestead at 867 East Fourth Street, Salem, is decorated with a fabulous array of

holiday trees and an outstanding model train display is open to the public at Fred Naragon's law office at

248 East State Street, Salem. Don't miss this holiday event! It gets bigger every year!

The Burchfield Museum and Garden is open 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sundays, from May 14
