Dear Friends, VOLUNTEERING WITH THE LOCAL CHURCH
We are very grateful to all those volunteers who offer their services in
looking after the All Saints Church building in Wouldham and in various
kinds of social action in which the church community engages.
Some of those people who volunteer are regular churchgoers and others
give their time on an ad hoc basis. Many of these like to help in a variety
of ways to keep the beautiful old building of All Saints open for regular
worship, funerals, weddings, baptisms and community activities like to
join in with activities which serve the community.
If you have a little time to give and are interested in helping out there are
a wide variety of ways you can be involved.
Help with Coffee Morning. Flower Arranging. Church Cleaning. Publicity.
Church visiting scheme at Winchester House. Delivery of collected items
to Food Bank. Admin help. Delivery of Church Magazine. Keeping church
open for visitors. Churchyard Working Parties. Help with Cream Teas.
Tower Tour Guides. Bellringing.
You can phone, text or email me for a discussion about what you might
like to do or about what some of the roles involve, or any of the relevant
people on the inside front cover of this magazine would be pleased to hear
about how or when you would like to help.
In peace
Mike Hayes (Priest-in-Charge, Burham & Wouldham)

BURHAM C of E PRIMARY
SCHOOL COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE,
RESPONSIBILITY, FORGIVENESS, T RUST
Our KS2 children had a brilliant day out at the Museum of Kent Life at the
beginning of Term 4 - having fun whilst at the same time learning about life during
the Stone Age. We were lucky with the weather – although wet, there was no snow
and it wasn’t as cold as it may have been in the Stone Age!
Our Panda Class (Reception) children welcomed their mothers and grandmothers to
their Mother’s Day Act of Worship in March. We are looking forward to
welcoming parents of Year 3 children this term to their St. George’s Day Act of
Worship.
Our Year 4 and Year 5 children had the wonderful opportunity to take part in the
‘Easter Experience’ workshops run by the Family Trust again this year. Everyone
had a fantastic morning and enjoyed such an enriching experience.
At the end of term Reverend Mike Hayes led our Lent Eucharist and we were
pleased to have the opportunity to once again welcome so many of our parents and
families to our service.
Term 5 will be another busy term preparing for SATs plus fun packed activities
such as Arts Week and a visit by Zoo Lab with their extraordinary collection of
mini-beasts!
Please visit our school website: www.burham.kent.sch.uk for further news and
information regarding our lovely school and to access our photo gallery. If you
would like to get involved with our PTFA please do get in touch by emailing:

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council met on 1st March 2016 in the Village Hall. We
discussed CCTV for the car park, organising a traffic survey and ways of
financing a new Village Hall or renovating the old one.
FUN DAY REPORT. Plans for the Fun Day which will take place on
August 27th in the Recreation Ground (and throughout the village) are well
under way. Our 2 Councillors Daphne Parris and Martin Jukes are leading
the committee and did a report for the Council. The TMBC Dog Show
will be set up as last year, there will be a motorbike static display, bouncy
castle, coconut shy and many other entertainments. Already confirmed is
the Eagle Heights static and flying display, watch this space for more
details to come over the following months.
CCTV. The Council have agreed to put CCTV in the car park with
funding help from our County Councillor Peter Homewood. This should
be up and running before the summer.
TRAFFIC SURVEY. The Council have had a quote to provide a traffic
Survey on the High Street. We feel this is necessary before Peters Bridge
opens and then the new school opens and then Peters Village opens. We
will publish the report once completed.
RIVER WALL. TMBC are in negotiations with an engineering consultant
and a report is expected in the late spring. Action after that will depend on
what is in the report.
Just a reminder that dog poo bags can also go into ordinary waste bins, we
have had a couple of warnings from TMBC that the emptying of dog poo
bins might be one of the services to be cut in the budget.
YOUTH CLUB. Due to staff shortages there have not been any meetings
on a Monday for a few weeks, these will be reinstated on March 14th, the
Village Hall start at 4pm. Come along, it looks like they have great fun.
WOULDHAMVILLAGE.COM. The Parish Council have purchased this
web site which is full of photos and history of Wouldham, it can be
accessed through our website. We think it is an important site and should
not be lost.

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
TMBC organized free dog micro chipping during March. In the two hour
period 25 dogs were chipped.
We have just received the invoice of £529.72 for the disposal and the
cleansing of the damaged cardboard and bank set alight back last
November. A few youths, and the same names crop up, have been
causing criminal damage with their anti-social behavior. Ultimately,
these types of costs – which also include the recently installed CCTV’s
in the car parks, of over £7,000 - are passed back to the residents (via
their precept charges) including of course the parents of the youths in
question. Perhaps the youths needs to bear this in mind!!
Crime figures: There was 1 reported crime between 19 January and 24
February: a burglary to a shed in a rear garden in Rochester Road. 2 petrol
strimmers were found nearby and gas bottles found in Margetts Lane. Anti-
social behavior was also reported: trail bike riding on the grass area
adjacent to New Court Road
The Public Inquiry regarding the upgrading of Bridle ways took place
in Burham during February. Many thanks to those who attended. At
the time of going to print, the outcome was still pending.
Clean for the Queen: A village litter pick was organized during March.
Equipment was provided. Several bags of rubbish were collected, our
thanks to those residents who assisted.
The CCTV cameras in Bell Lane and Church Street car parks are now
fully operational and have been for a few months. They were installed
at the request of residents to deter anti-social behavior and criminal
damage to vehicles.
Via resident’s requests, we have written confirmation that the new
footpath running along-side the New Court Road is a footpath and
cycle-way and NOT a bridleway and horses should not be using it. If
any residents see horse-riders on the new foot-path/cycle-way, please
report it to me with date and time and photographs if at all possible.
Signage and stenciling will be installed in due course.
If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to discuss,
just give me a call on my new number 01634 685936, e-mail me on
[email protected] or come along to the monthly meetings,
normally held the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is
scheduled for Monday 25 April 2016, Annual; Meetings of Electors.

PUPILS’ ART WILL GO PUBLIC
Can the River Medway inspire budding young artists to
new heights?
Members of the public can judge for themselves when
entries to the Tri-History Arts Competition go on display
next month, in Burham.
The competition, with its theme 'The River and what it
means to me' allows entries to be based on the area’s
human, natural and social/industrial history, and was
launched at the start of the year for primary schoolchildren
in Burham, Eccles, and Wouldham, neighbouring the new
community being built at Peters Village.
Co-sponsored by Peters Village developer Trenport
Investments Ltd and its site contractor Bam Nuttall, a
generous £900 worth of prizes is being offered, comprising
£250 for the gold prize and £10 for each of his/her
classmates, £150 for silver, £50 for bronze and the chance
to win voucher prizes for highly commended entries.
Judging takes place on 20 April, with the public exhibition
staged the following week, on Wednesday 27 April from
3-6.30pm at Burham Community Centre.
Competition organiser and Trenport Community Liaison
Manager Shirley Boards said: “Last year’s inaugural
competition, attracted an impressively high standard of
entries and we are expecting no less this time around,
though the event is not open to all ages this year.
“An all-school/ages operation puts a lot of strain on
teachers and pupils alike so, after consultation with the
head teachers, we decided the ‘whole school’ approach will
be used every three years and all others – as this year – will
concentrate on Year 5 (aged 9-10) pupils.

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School
March seems to have flown by and we’re now well into spring! The shortest
term of the year always seems crammed and this was no exception. Our KS1
children enjoyed visiting Greenwich Observatory to find out about space and
maybe will have been inspired to become space pioneers in the future! Starling
Class have managed to get hold of some of Tim Peake’s rocket seeds to plant
on his return from the International Space Station to help with a science
research project on the effects of weightlessness. Let’s hope they don’t turn
into magic beans and we end up fending off giants!
We’ve had opportunity to think about healthy living and have enjoyed visits
from health professionals to encourage us to think positively about our bodies
and consider the best ways of looking after them as we grow.
We’ve also enjoyed a fabulous production of the story of Jonah led by our
children in Year 3 and 4. Well done – it was brilliant!
On a sporty theme we have played football and netball as well as encouraging
lots of children to complete the Sport Relief Mile and also taken part in a mass
‘Zumba’ – also for Sport Relief! In addition, we arranged a three hour sports
spectacular at Strood Sports Centre one weekend to enjoy mixed activities but
a fun inflatable swim session! It was great to see parents joining in with
children having a go at all the activities.
The Easter holidays started on Thursday 24th March and we return to school on
Tuesday 12th April. Enjoy your break and we look forward to all returning fit
and ready for Term 5.
Unfortunately we have had a number of complaints and concerns regarding
parking and driving around the school. This is particularly around the zigzag
lines at the front of the school. We are hoping to install a camera with a view of
this area so that cars stopping or parking on the zigzags can be reported for
prosecution. This can result in 3 points on your licence and a £120 fine – we’re
sure nobody wants this and can easily be avoided by sticking to the rules! The
rules are there to protect all of our children and as convenient as it may seem to
just stop and drop at the door it could potentially end up with a very nasty
injury. We also have neighbours who are having trouble accessing driveways
as parents are parking across them or even using them as turning points. We
encourage all parents to walk children to school and where this is not possible
and the car is needed then please park sensibly, sensitively and with full
regard for others.
Thank you.

WINCHESTER HOUSE,
WOULDHAM
We hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter. March
was a very busy month here at Winchester House we
celebrated St Patrick’s Day in true Irish style and had lots of Easter themed
activities going on around the home.
Like many of you we are planning our garden projects with the help of both
Wouldham and Burham primary schools. We will be sowing seeds and planting
bulbs to kick start our garden in preparation for the summer.
Throughout April we have lots of entertainment coming up, including The
Travellers Dutch choir who will be performing on Saturday 2nd April at 11:30am
and also on 20th April at 3pm we will be celebrating Volunteer Recognition Day
when we pay tribute to the band of volunteers who give up their valuable time to
join in with the activities at Winchester House.
Please feel free to check out our website for details of life at our home and
forthcoming events.

April in Your Garden
‘Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.’ Well it certainly has been an unpredictable winter!! Hopefully the onset
of spring will see the weather settle down, dry out and be less windy. The
poor weather can certainly take its toll on the garden which makes the
most important task in spring a jolly good tidy up – make sure any broken
or damaged stems or trunks are cut back beyond the damaged area, and
also remove any debris that has landed in your garden, and at the same
time remove any remaining die back from last seasons herbaceous plants.
Despite their early start, the spring bulbs will now be out in full force, and
the first proper spring colour is now brightening our gardens. It’s also
time to think about planting summer flowering bulbs such as lilies, dahlia,
iris and gladioli. Whilst these may seem old fashioned, they are tried and
tested to enjoy the changeable English climate, and will suit most style of
garden as there are many colour options available. For more modern
planting styles, or for statement plants then choose Eucomis (a relative of
the pineapple) or Zantedeschia.
Now the weather is warming up, and the sap is rising, it will be time to
start mowing the lawns again. Make sure the first cut is with the blades on
their highest setting to avoid damaging the grass should the nights turn
cold again. Now is also the time to carry out lawn repairs, either using
turf patches (obtained from a garden centre), or by sowing seed (best for
small patches), and also the time to start tackling any perennial weeds.
Applying a ‘weed & feed’ product will help to maintain a healthy lawn
whilst also tackling the weeds – make sure you follow the instructions for
weather/temperature guidance for the best results.
By now the pests will also be making an appearance, and tackling them
early is often the key to successful management later on in the season.
Slugs & snails in particular will enjoy any fresh young growth at this time
of year, so depending on your style of gardening you might use pellets
(hidden under pots or rocks to avoid any other animals snacking on them),
nematodes (which can be watered into the soil to deal with pests
naturally), or picking them off and disposing of them in a suitable way
(bucket of salt, or on the bird table).
Other jobs to do now: Edge the lawn to keep it looking neat. Sow seeds
for summer flowers e.g. Cosmos, Zinnia, Sunflowers. Plant main crop
potatoes. Sow salads, parsnips, radishes and carrots if the ground has
warmed up enough. ‘Sue Durrani, Secretary, Allotment Association,
