Dear Parents, Guardians, & Friends, We hope that you all enjoy the celebration of Easter and can find time to attend one of the Easter Masses at our local parishes, the times of which are enclosed. Could you keep the Year 11 students in your prayers as they approach the “business end of their educational season”. Their hard work will be rewarded. On behalf of these students, can I thank the staff for their dedication over this critical period as many are coming in over Easter and staying late after school. During our Lenten journey we have been collecting for charities ranging from Cancer Research to Caritas. We have received a thank you from the Todmorden branch (Cancer Research) for raising over £500. Well done to our students. Thank you to the community for your support as we are, once again, over-subscribed with applicants for the upcoming Year 7. We already have a waiting list of over forty who want to join us next year! Unfortunately, we have said goodbye to our School Business Manager, Mrs Margaret Adams who is retiring after dedicating 16 years to All Saints’. She will be sadly missed but we wish her every happiness as she takes a well-earned rest. Please also continue to keep Mrs Jeffers, Fr Mackie and all our students in your prayers. Regards, Mr McNally Headteacher On Thursday 16th March, over fifty students participated in the annual Creative Arts evening. Parents and family members packed the hall and were dazzled by a wonderful variety of performances by students from all year groups – although our lighting board did leave them in the dark at one point! Year 11 Music students wowed with their vocal skills whilst the GCSE Drama groups played extracts from their exam pieces. Our talented KS3 students entertained with an energetic cheerleading display, the rhythm of the samba band and the harmony of the school choir, as well as individual song, instrumental and dance displays. Tasty cakes and pizzas were provided by the GCSE Cooking & Nutrition students with FOAS also providing refreshments. The art department also provided a colourful display of work, showcasing even more of our students’ talents. The standard of performance was excellent and our compère, Joshua Campbell (9T), did a fantastic job of keeping everyone amused. Well done everyone! On Thursday 23rd of February, All Saints' second Bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards were presented at Turf Moor to the Year 11 pupils who completed the award last year. The pupils had to complete four different sections including skill, physical, volunteering and the expedition in order to qualify. They completed the award by doing activities such as coaching younger pupils, community work, basketball, boxing and many more in order to achieve the standards. In addition to this, all the pupils completed their practice expedition in the Trough of Bowland in July and their assessment

weekend in Goosnargh. They camped, cooked and hiked carrying all their kit in the sun, wind and rain and were commended by the assessors for their teamwork and for how much they developed during the expedition. All the pupils had a great time. Well done to all this year’s pupils and good luck to the new Year 10 cohort who are beginning their Duke of Edinburgh award. There are still a few places remaining, so see Mr Briggs if you are interested. Mr T Briggs CL Science

On Thursday 23rd March, fifty pupils and five members of staff visited the Lowry Theatre, Salford to watch Susan Hill's The Woman in Black. Tensions were running high from the moment the lights went down and everyone was on the edge of their seats waiting for the woman in black to make her first appearance. She didn't disappoint - one year 11 nearly jumped into her friend's lap at one point! On behalf of all the pupils, thank you so much to Mr Mayes, Mr O'Sullivan, Miss Roddy and Miss Fazila for accompanying us, and a special thanks to Miss Roddy from her GCSE Performing Arts pupils for preparing their exam booklets for them! I'm hoping to arrange another theatre trip before the end of the year, so keep your eyes peeled!

News from the PE Department – Boys

This half term has seen the boys compete in local competitions in table tennis, basketball and football. The U13s boys’ table tennis team won the Rossendale Schools’ table tennis competition which was held at All Saints'. The winning team

comprised of Jenson Jakovlevs (8T), Jake Hodgson (7R), Eli Broomfield (8MT) and Oli McDonald (8R). All four boys played consistently well on the night and will now go on to represent Rossendale at the Lancashire Youth Games in Garstang in May. All Saints' also hosted the Year 5/6 boys’ and girls’ table tennis competitions this half term with sixteen primary schools entering both events. All of our Year 11 GCSE students umpired and scored the matches as part of their course where they have been assessed as table tennis officials. Many parents, teachers and coaches commented on the quality of the officiating and professional manner in which our pupils conducted themselves.

The Year 8 basketball team finished third in the Rossendale Schools’ competition and performed very well at the event. The highlight was a long range basket from Jens on Jakovlevs (8T). The Year 9 team finished fourth in their competition with Jack Greenwood (9MT) and Jacob Fletcher (9MT) leading the points scoring for All Saints’.

News from the PE Department – Boys cont… The Year 7 and 9 football teams have been in Rossendale Cup action against Whitworth with mixed fortunes. The Year 7 team eventually lost 7-4 after leading for much of the first half. Adam Baker (7MT) impressed on the wing and Jack Thomson (7R) made some impressive tackles in defence. The Year 9 team eventually won on penalties after leading for much of the game before conceding a late equaliser, meaning the game finished 2-2. Elliot Haworth (8A) and Jaydon Hoyle (8A) - two Year 8s who were permitted to play up a year, scored the goals. Captain Jensen Smith (9R), who had a terrific game in defence, coolly slotted home the winning penalty. The team now face Haslingden in the semi final. The Year 8, 10 and 11 teams will be in Rossendale Cup action after the Easter break. All boys' PE classes have been taking part in inter-group lessons for the past four weeks. Lessons follow a similar format with pupils being in the same four teams each lesson and are awarded points for who gets changed the quickest, completes the best warm up, follows the theme, performs well in competition and captain's bonus points. The lads have participated in sports such as football, rugby, hockey, badminton, basketball, cricket and dodgeball and followed themes such as respect, teamwork, co-operation, resilience, communication and honesty. All five year groups have embraced the lessons and the winning teams in each class are awarded a prize.

Burnley Football Club Player Visit

Premier League Striker Ashley Barnes paid a visit to All Saints’ on Tuesday 21st March for a short Q&A session with both the Enterprise and the Intervention groups.

The pupils got an insight into the player’s background, where his career started and his most memorable moments in football. During the visit Ashley also awarded prizes and certificates to students for their excellent work in the group workshops that they had attended. Pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the event and pupils were inspired by the session.

Intervention Group Twelve of our Year 10 pupils travelled to Burnley Football Club for a behind the scenes tour of the club. The pupils had a chance to sit in the players’ seats in the changing room,

experience the ambiance in the Chairman’s Office and see where players sign to join the club. The pupils were also given an opportunity to sit in the press box and the directors’ seats pitch side. The pupils were given this opportunity as part of the Intervention workshops that they are taking part in. The pupils will attend sessions that cover a wide range of topics covering; healthy eating, social skills, relationships along with literacy and numeracy.

Badminton Rewards Trip The PE department rewarded fifteen of our pupils with a trip to the Yonex World Badminton Championships held at Birmingham Barclaycard Arena. The pupils were given this opportunity for their hard work and commitment in attending extra-curricular sports clubs and representing the school in a sporting capacity. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the event where they were given the opportunity to watch world class badminton and participate in mini activities to test their own ability, all hosted and run by Badminton England. On the 15th March, thirteen Year 9 science students took part in an engineering competition at Burnley College. The students were split into two groups and over the course of the day they designed, built, tested and then raced a carbon dioxide powered racing car. One group came second in the race, being beaten to first place by only one tenth of a second! The second group came home with a trophy for the best presentation based on their design and teamwork skills. The students were a credit to the school in terms of both behaviour and attitude. Well done everyone.

On Thursday 3rd March, All Saints’ celebrated World Book Day with a fun day of fancy dress, reading and cake sales. Overall, we raised £330 which will help to buy some fabulous new books for our Library. Many, many thanks to all who were involved! Mrs A Hindley CL English

On Friday 10th March the school choir entered Burnley Music Festival. We sang two songs in the choir class, 'True Colours' and 'Let Love Shine Through'. The choir sang beautifully and were awarded second place! It was a fantastic experience to both perform in a competition and hear other choirs perform. We are looking forward to entering again next year! Well done everyone. Miss L Padwell Music

On Wednesday 29th March, twelve Year 8 pupils attended a rewards trip to Bleakholt animal sanctuary. Over the past eight months the pupils have been raising money for the charity and collected toys, food and blankets. The pupils were able to visit the dogs that they have sponsored and made new friends with a goat named Mary and a pig called Margie. The pupils had a great time and learnt a lot about how the sanctuary is run and how the money raised is spent. Mr T O’Sullivan Year 8 Progress Leader

On Sunday 26th March, I had my Hallé concert which was held at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester; my final Hallé concert of the season. As well as the Hallé Orchestra, there were three other choirs involved – Hallé Youth Choir, Hallé Children’s Choir and my choir, the Hallé Youth Training Choir. The day began at 11.15am when rehearsals at the Bridgewater Hall began. This was important because the sound my choir makes in our rehearsal space is very different to that in the Bridgewater and it is more difficult to tune into other part’s harmonies. Then, at 3pm the concert began and during the first half I sat with my fellow sopranos watching the orchestra. After the interval, we waited in the artists’ bar for the Youth Choir to finish their set. Everyone was nervous when we were waiting in the wings to go on stage. The theme of the concert was ‘water’ and we sang four songs; ‘Take me to the River’, ‘My Shell’, ‘Tis the Voice of the Lobster’ and ‘Deep River’. Our pieces went really well. The experience was unforgettable and I am very excited for my residential later this year and very much looking forward to re-auditioning for next season! Charlotte-May Tomlinson 9 Romero

In other news – congratulations to Kirsten Cokell (7R) who has been awarded a Blue Peter badge for her charity work and also to Eden Thompson Howlett (8A) who has won yet another silver medal in a recent ice skating competition. Well done to all three girls.
