Ready to start your heart-healthy diet? Here are eight tips to get you started Mary Howden, Parish Nurse
Although you might know that eating certain foods can increase your heart disease risk, it's often tough to change your eating habits. Whether you have years of unhealthy eating under your belt or you simply want to fine-tune your diet, here are 8 heart-healthy diet tips: 1. Control your portion size-How much you eat is just as important as what you eat. Overloading your plate, taking seconds & eating until you feel stuffed can lead to eating more calories than you should. Use a small plate or bowl to help control your portions. Eat larger portions of low-calorie, nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits & and vegetables, and smaller portions of high-calorie, high-sodium foods, such as refined, processed or fast foods. Keep track of the number of servings you eat. 2. Eat more vegetables & fruits-Vegetables & fruits are good sources of vitamins & minerals. Vegetables & fruits are also low in calories and rich in dietary fiber. Vegetables & fruits contain substances found in plants that may help prevent cardiovascular disease. Eating more fruits & vegetables may help you eat less high-fat foods, such as meat, cheese & snacks. Featuring vegetables & fruits in your diet can be easy. 3. Select whole grains-Whole grains are good sources of fiber & other nutrients that play a role in regulating blood pressure & heart health. You can increase the amount of whole grains in a heart-healthy diet by making simple substitutions for refined grain products. Or be adventuresome & try a new whole grain, such as whole-grain faro, quinoa or barley. 4. Limit unhealthy fats-Limiting how much saturated & trans fats you eat is an important step to reduce your blood cholesterol & lower your risk of coronary artery disease. A high blood cholesterol level can lead to a buildup of plaque in your arteries, called atherosclerosis, which can increase your risk of heart attack & stroke.

Hello from Chiayi, Taiwan! My days here this past month have been full of all the things they usually are: classes, tutoring, O.S.F. and Friday Night Bible Study. We had a 4-day weekend at the end of Feb for 2/28: Peace Memorial Day, but after all the traveling I'd done between Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival, I decided to just enjoy having 4 days off but not worry about going anywhere. Most of my friends were hanging around here as well, so I spent my weekend playing board games, drinking coffee, and reading. Now that Lent has started, our team Tues Night Bible Study has become a time where we sing Lenten hymns, listen to a sermon on the internet, and have a service of our own on campus. In a couple of weeks, we will have parent observation of our kindergarten classes (parents can sign up to come and watch a class). At the end of March/beginning of April my youngest brother will be coming out to visit, which I'm also really excited about! And before I know it, it will be Easter! Please keep my students (and their families) in your prayers as they continue learn to about Jesus and grow in their knowledge of Him. We were looking at the story of Jesus Healing the Lepers in the K3 this week, and I asked if Jesus would help, and one of the students simply replied, "Yes. God is good." Another prayer request, especially as it's getting to be that time of year where people on the team are starting to look at their plans for next year, keep Taiwan and the school here in your prayers, that God would continue to send people to the field here to serve. Thank you all so much for your prayers and support!
Peace and Blessings, Amanda
CATECHETICAL COMMENTSA Series
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
This month we continue with the Fourth Commandment:
Honor your father and mother.
What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parentsand other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them.
Question 50 asks: “What does God require of us in the Fourth Commandment?”
And the answer continues:
God requires us
B. to serve our parents and other authorities by gladly providing what they need or require;
And then these verses are presented:
1 Tim. 5:4 - If a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their ownhousehold and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.
Rom. 13:7 - Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenueis owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
We see in the first of these passages that providing for our own families is the starting point for serving“our parents and other authorities.” This makes sense in a lateral or downward direction. Husbands andwives, brothers and sisters, etc., should definitely care for one another. Adults should care for the young, this is clear. But Paul’s letter to Timothy reveals an area which was already being neglected in his day andis still a problem today. And that is the care of our elderly. Many elderly are not only ignored; some areeven taken advantage of and abused. I thank God when I see the elderly in our church well cared for bytheir families. It’s quite heartwarming. Thank you!
The second of the verses above speaks of doing what none of us enjoy – paying taxes. Yes, we do owemoney to the government. And think for a moment about all the good we receive for our investment. Good roads, clean water, proper sewage, trash removal, police and fire fighters, the best military in theworld, just to name a few.
And, as we can see from Paul’s letter to the Romans, it doesn’t end with financial support. We owe ourparents and other authorities respect and honor. I will not tolerate hearing children disrespect their parents. If you do it in my presence, you will hear about it from me! Children – of all ages – you are required bythis commandment to treat your parents with respect. You don’t always have to like them, but you do haveto honor them. The same goes for citizens and their governmental leaders.
Humbly in His service,Rev. Steven S. BillingsSenior Pastor
From the School Principal "When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is accomplished,' and He bowed his head and gave up His Spirit." (John 19:30)
Good Friday is Good Friday. It's Happy Friday. It's Salvation Friday. Jesus-is-glorified Friday. Christ-died-for-my-sins Friday.
He's a Good God so it must be Good Friday. It's good because He doesn't treat you as your sins deserve. He doesn't hold a grudge against you for your transgressions.
We sin daily. We sin much--completely and totally non-stop. We plead for mercy from God only to do the same sins again. Then, after all this sin-sin-sinning, we look at God and say cluelessly, "These people around me are so bad. God, you need to do something about them!"
Apart from Good Friday, we'd know only the wrath and punishment of God. We'd get what we deserve. We'd go only to hell. Don't flatter yourself, God is not merciful or loving or kind to you apart from the Cross. You don't deserve it. God's justice requires the opposite of mercy. Repent!
Good Friday is good because from now on God sees only "good" when He sees you. He sees you through His Son. The death and hell that you deserve died with Jesus.
In three days, you'll see your resurrection. Christ will rise from the dead and you will rise in Him, too. His Good Friday makes every day, each day, until your last day "good." That includes your "last day!" Your last day can't really be your last day because of this Good Friday. Christ's death is your death. Christ's resurrection is your resurrection.
And if the very last day that you will have here will be good because it's not really your last day, then each day from this day forward must be good, too. It has to be good!
Good Friday is Good Friday. It is not black Friday or bad Friday or angry God Friday. No, it is a very good day for you for your Good God gave up His Son for you.
"Almighty and merciful God, we implore You graciously to be hold this Your family, for which our Lord
Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed and given up into the hands of wicked men and to suffer death upon the cross; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever." Amen.
