missed the NWAC playoffs by two games.

Wrestling earned three indi-vidual All-American awards at the NJCAA National Champi-onships, but for the first time in school history finished outside of the top ten in back-to-back sea-sons. The Cardinals were ranked as high as #6 in the NJCAA polls in February, finished in 14th place at the national tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

In late Fall season action, NIC Volleyball won the NWAC East Region and was ranked #3 in the

final poll, but lost to top ranked Linn-Benton in the NWAC playoffs and didn’t place in the top 6 final teams. Women’s Soccer made a great run in the NWAC playoffs, and lost to the eventual Cham-pion, #1 ranked Peninsula College, in the semi-finals to finish 3rd. Men’s soccer advanced to the NWAC playoffs after missing out the previous season, but lost a heartbreaker to Tacoma CC, 1-0. Meanwhile in golf, the Men’s team won the only NWAC tournament in the Fall, hosted by Grays Harbor CC, and the NWAC defending champion Women’s team placed 2nd.

HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STAR GAMEThe 14th annual Statewide High School All-

Star Game was presented by a new major sponsor, the Idaho Central Credit Union for the annual classic. The best high school senior basketball players in the state came to Coeur d’Alene and North Idaho College on March 25, 2017. The Re-gion girls team prevailed in the opener 87-63, and the Metro boys team won in a shoot –out 100-90.

Thanks to the Coeur d’Alene Resort and oth-er sponsors for making this another tremendous event and showcase for the basketball fans in Coeur d’Alene.

The North Idaho College Booster Club is a nonprofit organization, committed to providing financial support to all recognized intercol-legiate athletic programs at NIC through various fund-raising and endowment activities for student athlete grant-in-aid and team ben-efits. Organized in the 1960s, the

Booster Club supports all NIC rec-ognized intercollegiate athletics as a lifelong learning experience that will enhance the value of sportsmanship and provide a positive experience for student athletes, students, and fans. The club also recognizes the commit-ment our athletes make to the young people of our community through

our athletic Cardinal Kids outreach programs. The Booster Club holds various fund-raising events through-out the year including an annual auction, awards banquet, 3-on-3 bas-ketball tournament, and golf tourna-ments. It also co-sponsors the Coeur d’Alene Crossing and operates a concession stand at all home events.

M I S S I O N S T A T E M E N T

The Spring semester brings on the start of Softball and Golf seasons, and after the record winter snowfall finally lost its last hold on the landscape, we can finally focus on the count-down to graduation. In case you haven’t made your plans already, the NIC graduation is planned for May 12, 2017. Unlike the rest of the NWAC schools on quarters, NIC’s semester schedule requires our student-athletes to begin competition prior to the start of school year in August, and con-tinue the Spring sport seasons af-ter the conclusion of classes in May. This season, after school ends on May 19-22, NIC Softball will be hosting the NWAC Region softball tournament in Spokane, in a partnership agreement with the Community Colleges of Spokane and the Spokane Sports Commission. Mark your calendar.

With the conclusion of the 2017 basketball season, all NIC teams have now experienced at least one season in the NWAC. Cardinal fans that witnessed games this winter in Christianson Gym can attest that the quality of basketball was excit-ing and the games competitive. As predicted, the NIC Men’s basketball team was the elite team in the conference, winning the East Region with a re-cord of 13-3, a record of 25-4 overall and the #1 NWAC ranking. However, despite the lofty rank-ing and regular season accomplishments the Car-dinals were upset in the first round of the NWAC tournament, in a rare subpar performance from this year’s team. Fellow East Region rival Walla Walla Community College took home the NWAC title. The NIC women’s team had the first losing record since the 2003-04 season, and failed to make the NWAC post season tournament. The Lady Cardi-nals battled injuries the entire season, and despite some impressive regular season games, the team

Hello Athletic Booster Enthusiasts, As a supporter of the North Idaho Athlet-

ics, whether or not you are a Booster mem-ber, when you attend a NIC sports event you are a representative of this great organization. Showing your support for our athletes and the school is huge. I know that the coaches and the athletes really appreciate your sup-port and love to see you at their events. Think back to the days you were actively involved in school athletics. Picture the crowds of oth-er students, parents, friends and people you didn't even know cheering you on. How did that make you feel?

I think back to my younger days when I was involved in triathlons. I specifically re-

member running the last mile of an event and all of these specta-tors who were unknown to me were on the sidelines yelling encouraging remarks to me … Come on, only a little further … You can do it … Keep going ... Great job.

I can only say what a boost that does for your energy and morale. I would like all of you to think back to similar times that other people have supported and encouraged you to further your goal.

Think about how you felt at that time, the boost it gave to you. This is what OUR ath-

letes need and want. They thrive on your yells of encouragement and support. I encourage you to remember all of that when you are at these sporting events. I also encourage you to bring a fam-ily member, a friend or acquain-tance to our events. Get someone started on being a supporter of NIC Athletics and NIC Athletes! Show others what is like to be supportive and proud of being a

representative of NIC Athletics. If they are not a Booster member, encourage them to become one.

See you out there…

On Tuesday April 25, 2017, former Boise State football standout and Super Bowl champion Daryn Colledge will be the Booster Club luncheon speaker at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. Colledge enlisted in the Idaho Army National Guard for at least the next eight years at the conclusion of his NFL career to give back to his country. SOFTBALLThe softball team had a difficult time get-

ting on the field early this year with the harsh winter, and continual rain. It's fortunate that we scheduled a tournament in Florida to get some games under our belt before the NWAC season. The Cards headed south to Clermont, Fl to participate in the Spring Games. In the season opener the Cardinals came out strong against Davenport University JV with a win of 16-2, and continued the offensive assault in game two vs. Uni-versity of Northwest-ern - St. Paul JV, 16-1. The Cards finished 4-2 in the tournament, losing a tough match-up against a good Muskegon Commu-nity College team, 6-4 and another NJCAA opponent, Kalamazoo CC, 10-9 in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Cards defeated NJCAA Mercyhurst North East in extra innings on the international tiebreaker rule, and also knocked off West Virginia Wesleyan College JV, 10-3, before beginning NWAC play.

The Cards currently stand in 3rd place in the East Region, behind Wenatchee Valley CC. The Cards split with WVCC last weekend on their home field to stop their 11 game win-ning streak. At 10-5 in the NWAC East, and 16-7 overall, the Cards are only 3 games back of WVCC in the loss column. The Cards have split games with the top three teams in the East while sweeping Spokane on their home field. Jamie Yurick is off to a great start at the plate, batting .490. Kennedy Anderson is hitting a solid .472 , and Megan Carver is batting .417 with 26 RBIs to leader the offensive attack. On the mound McKenzie Brittos is 6-1 with a 3.87 ERA.

The Cards are home for key games in the upcoming weeks. Check out the games at Me-morial Field.

WOMEN’S SOCCERWinter hasn’t released its hold on our field

yet, but that doesn’t mean the girls haven’t been working hard. 17 out of 24 had a GPA better then 3.0 after the Fall Semester grades were handed out! They’ve also been work-

ing out 3 days a week at Precision Fitness to improve strength, flexibility and agility. The sophomores who want to continue play-ing have also worked hard to find landing spots:

• Jocelyn Cook-Cox has signed with the Col-lege of Idaho, Caldwell, Idaho.

• Jessica Scott has signed with the Univer-sity of Minne-sota Crookston, Crookston, Minn.

• Megan Lowery has signed with the Uni-versity of Mary, Bismarck, N.D.

• Madeline Roberts has committed to The Master’s University, Santa Clarita, Calif.

• Tiegan Horton has signed with Portland State University, Portland, Oregon.

We have 3 players committed for next year’s squad, which is a little behind where I like to be at this time of the year, but there just weren’t as many local players interested in continuing the playing career in college. Auni-ka Capps a forward from Naches, Wash., Ello-ry Ferris another forward is from Ellensburg, Wash., and Natalie Goetz who played center back for the state champion Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy.

We’ll continue working hard once we can get outside to train for our two scrimmages this Spring. We’re scheduled to play the University of Idaho varsity on April 23rd at 1:00pm in Moscow and Walla Walla Commu-nity College in Walla Walla, Wash. on April 29th also at 1:00pm.

Go Cardinals!

WOMEN’S BASKETBALLThe Lady Cardinals closed out their season

with a close road loss at Wenatchee Valley on March 1. The season ended with a disappoint-ing 13-14 record for our young and injury riddled team. The Cards were still in the play-off picture with just two games left but could not turn the corner. On the bright side, four of our ten freshmen averaged ten or more points per game which should provide us with a very strong core leading into the 2017-2018

season. Cierra Dvorak led the charge averag-ing 13.4 points, 8.2 rebounds and over 3.1 as-sists per game earning her Second Team All-Eastern Region recognition. Whitney Meier, Gia Sorn and Lana Berg all averaged over ten points per game. Considering the big NWAC picture, the Lady Cardinals defeated two NWAC teams from other regions that qualified for the up-coming NWAC sea-son. Wins over Cen-tralia, ranked eighth in the entire NWAC, and Bellevue in De-cember showed what level of basketball this young team was capable of. In addi-tion, we lost at the buzzer to Lower Co-lumbia College, a team ranked second in the NWAC final poll. We are excited to return an eventual injury free and experienced class of sophomores and are currently recruiting incoming freshmen who are capable of making an immediate im-pact. We would like to give a special thank you to our two graduating sophomores, Char-ity Marlatt and Shayna Allert. Both of these young ladies made positive contributions to our team both on and off the court while push-ing through injuries themselves which could have sidelined players with less mental tough-ness. We are excited to follow their future life endeavors and wish them much success.

VOLLEYBALLThe volleyball team has been working very

hard to get ready for 2017 season. With indi-vidual workouts com-ing to an end and team practices starting up I believe we are ready to start putting ev-erything together as a team. We are excited to announce two new members to the North Idaho College vol-leyball team. Kayla Neumann, from Sandpoint, ID, is a 5’10” outside hitter. Kayla was named All- Inland Empire League first

team 2015 and 2016, All North Idaho team in 2016, and most valuable player for her high school. Harley Cope, from Kendrick, Idaho, is a 6’0” middle/right side who will be a huge asset to the team since we lost all of our mid-dles. Harley was a standout at her high school where she was named 1st all league in not only volleyball but also basketball. She was also named 2016 all tournament volleyball player in 1A DII state volleyball tournament and was named most valuable player for both basket-ball and volleyball. Both of these athletes will bring a lot to the program as student- athletes both on the court and also in the classroom. We are excited to get them in!

GOLFThe Cardinal’s Men’s and Women’s golf

teams are currently in their off season but gear-ing up for the NWAC Spring season in mid-April. We are pleased to announce impressive team GPA’s in the Fall Semester, 3,34 for the men and 2.89 for the women. The winter break in between semesters provided an opportu-nity for the golfers to work on their game in-

dividually, as most of them live in warmer climates where golf courses were still open during these months. When the team returned for the start of the second se-mester we used both Sandbaggerz and Randy Henry’s Dy-namic Golf, to work on the player’s game

in preparation for the spring season. Both golf facilities have top of the line indoor simulators which will allow for the teams to not only work on swing mechanics but ball flight as well. The team used these facilities until the local courses opened back up, at which time we will use our home course, the Avondale Golf Club in Hayden. A special thanks to Heath Byers of Sandbaggerz and Randy Henry of Randy Henry’s Dynamic golf for accommodating the teams. The Cardinal teams played well in our first spring tournament was the NWAC League match hosted by Columbia Basin College at the West Richland and Canyon Lakes Golf Courses in Tri-Cities. Final scores not yet available.

MEN’S SOCCERMen’s soccer has been in the weight room

and in the gym all winter. In addition to getting stronger, the guys have dramatically improved their times in the one mile and two mile tests. Their speed of play seems to be improving each

week as well. In ad-dition to signing Jon Elizarras, the Car-dinals have had six prospects visit campus in February and have another seven visiting campus by mid-April. Colton Gednalske, of Coeur d’Alene, and Tanner Sayer, of Nampa, are now en-rolled at NIC as well.

As the guys continue to train, they look forward to their spring schedule that includes matches against College of Idaho, Northwest Nazarene University, Carroll College, and a Missoula team of recent college players including NIC alumni Kyle Hammond, Lane Hamilton, and Travis Jette. The team also includes a handful of players that competed in the NCAA DII tour-nament for Fort Lewis College and Colorado-Mesa. The Missoula men’s team could be the most competitive game on the schedule.

Beyond NIC, the Cardinals soccer alums represented well this past fall. Alec Johnson, a midfielder from Lake City High School, earned an All-Academic selection from the West Coast Conference at Gonzaga University. A handful of guys completed their senior seasons and are graduating this year: Sid Rayne at College of Idaho, Robert Wilson at Eastern Oregon, and Dylan Allen at Carroll College. The Cardinals also had two alumni compete in the NCAA DII tournament this fall. Will Mecier competed for Colorado-Mesa, and Brady Ulen was a driving force at Western Washington University. Ulen scored two goals and had an assist for the Vi-kings in their 3-2 first round win over Dixie State. The win came in the Vikings first NCAA playoff berth in program history.

MEN’S BASKETBALLThe North Idaho Cardinal’s season ends

in heartbreak for the 2nd year in a row. They were upset in the first round of the NWAC tournament by Tacoma Community College.

As described by the NWAC on the conference website, this was David vs. Goliath, and the Cardinals were stunned after surrendering a 10 point lead with just over 2 minutes to go. This was a disappointing end to an otherwise very successful season. The team tallied 25 wins and a number of accolades along the way, including tournament championships in Port-land, California, and here at home in the Coeur

d’Alene INN-vita-tional. North Idaho College expects all of their athletes to con-tinue playing basket-ball at 4 year schools all over the country. To highlight some of the commitments that have already been made: Markus Golder has committed to Val-paraiso University,

Niko Bevens to University of Montana, and Ziggy Satterhwaite to Point Loma University in San Diego, California. All of these players will receive full Scholarships to attend and participate in their respective athletics pro-grams. North Idaho looks forward to many more commitments in the coming weeks, including standout point guard Sam Dowd, who has multiple visits lined up with universi-ties across the country. “Basketball is really a small part of what we do, getting these guys to 4 year schools and on to completing their edu-cation will be a huge step for them being suc-cessful in life, which is what we want for them when they come to North Idaho.” This was not the ending the Cardinal’s had envisioned for the season but look forward to another great group of athletes next year competing for an NWAC championship.

CHEERLEADINGThe NIC Cheerleading team competed in

the annual Collegiate National Champion-ships in Anaheim, California at the end of March and earned a 2nd place finish. Vin-cennes University from Indiana got first, Col-lege of Southern Idaho - 3rd, Arizona Western College - 4th, and Eastern Arizona College - 5th. This was the second largest division at the competition. The team has worked so hard all year and overcame many obstacles to earn

this victory. Last year the team was unable to compete because they didn’t fundraise enough, but with a new roster and a re-newed commitment to achieve financial goals and team prepa-ration, we were able to excel at the com-petition. It was a well-deserved and hard earned team effort, and great experience for the program. We are all proud and already excited for next season to try and bring home that Cheer National cham-pionship!

WRESTLINGFreshman Levi Perry finished in 3rd

place, and the Cardinals earned three All-Americans on their way to a 14th place fin-ish at the NJCAA Wrestling tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Cardinals entered the tournament ranked 8th in the nation, but only qualified 7 wrestlers for nationals after a tough region tournament. Freshman Trey Meyer (165 lbs) placed 5th and sophomore Alex Aguilar (174 lbs) placed 7th to join Per-ry as All-Americans. Perry lost a tough bout to the tournament Most Outstanding Wres-tling, Preston Lauterbach of Iowa Western in the quarterfinals, but battled back to place 3rd in the 184 weight class.

The Cardinals will return 6 of the 7 na-

tional qualifiers to go along with returning Heavyweight All-American Damian Trujillo to challenge for a title next season. With the 3 all-Ameri-cans from this year’s team NIC has now earned 230 Wrestling All-Americans in the history of the pro-

gram. The coaches have been on the recruit-ing trail since the end of the season, visiting high school state tournaments and national competition in Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, and Michigan, to name a few.
