The Fold Monthly Newsletter of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church April Spotlight Project Work Days at Brightmoor Aldersgate Initiative, Detroit Each calendar year, 20-25 teams come to do mission work in the Brightmoor area. Some come for a few hours and others for a week. Some are adults, while others are youth groups from 4th grade through high school and even college. Some come during college spring breaks, others during the summer, and local groups come all year round. Thanks to our partnership with Motown Mission, volunteers have come from as close as Clarkston and as far away as Maryland and Minnesota to work on homes in Brightmoor. They installed plumbing, painted inside and out, fixed garbage disposals, installed new gutters and fascia, and demolished garages. Other groups cleaned up the neighborhood by mowing and painting boards to place on abandoned homes. Those activities were just by-products of the hope, joy and love that they spread to the people of Brightmoor. We invite adult and youth groups to contact us about spending a day, several days, or even a week in Brightmoor doing mission and outreach work. We will tailor a day to the interests and skills of your group. Past mission teams Summer volunteers from First United Methodist Church in Rhinelander, WI work with neighbors in a garden. The Rhinelander youth also started the clean up and beautification of Acacia Avenue, a main route to Gompers Elementary and Middle School. An Easter Prayer

When everything was dark and it seemed that the sun would never shine again,

your love broke through.Your love was too strong,

too wide, too deep for death to hold. The sparks cast by your love

dance and spread and burst forthwith resurrection light.

Gracious God,We praise you for the light of new life

made possible through Jesus. We praise you for the light of new life

that shone on the first witnesses of resurrection. We praise you for the light of new life

that continues to shine in our hearts today. We pray that the Easter light of life, hope and joy,

will live in us each day;and that we will be bearers of that light

into the lives of others.

Amen.

Easter Joy Ride

We'd like to thank everyone who contributed to our Valentine's Day Joy Ride. With your amazing donations we were able to pack up 10 plates of treats to distribute throughout our community. Truly an amazing outreach!

With Easter right around the corner we need to plan for our next Joy Ride. We will be collecting homemade cookies and treats on Saturday, March 31st. You may drop them off at the church that morning around 10:00. We will pack them up and have them ready for people to take with them after Easter service the following day. If you are at the church during the week and would like to bring them in, please place them in the refrigerator and label JOY RIDE.

Thank you again for all your support in this outreach program we offer!

At a Glance: March 31st 10:00 AM collecting treats and packaging.

April 1st 11:45 AM pick up treats to deliver after service and deliver around the community.

To honor the memory and the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the youth of the Archdiocese of Detroit spent a day working at our church building painting murals to use around the neighborhood.

The Spring Break Youth Mission Project

25+ youth and adult leaders from Plymouth First UMC spent two days working on cleaning up yards and boarding up two homes on Darcy. They did a fantastic job mowing 4 lawns surrounding vacant homes and a couple of vacant properties. The team also helped unload and arrange 15 new tables and 100 new folding chairs for the church. This would not have been an easy task without them!

Tire cleanup day sponsored by Brightmoor Alliance. As Pastor Courtney said that day, “Today we break all the rules and bring the Kingdom to Brightmoor. They dumped tires on our community and now our church is the last stop as hundreds of volunteers, our neighbors, usher them out of Brightmoor to be recycled.

TEAM DEARBORN UMCGood Shepherd UMC and Dearborn First UMC have teamed up to explore ways to positively impact our separate ministries with joint ventures.

Your GS Spark Leadership is actively engaged in this endeavor. To date, three meeting have been held on Sunday afternoons during the past 6 weeks. Together we have toured the facilities of each church, shared information including our church profiles, and started a process with the expectation of “doing more together for Christ.”

During our December Charge Conference at Good Shepherd we adopted a recommendation to intentionally explore shared or cooperative ministries between Good Shepherd and other United Methodist churches. Our recommendation requested support from our Detroit Renaissance District to undertake this challenge, and we received verbal affirmation from our District Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Charles Boayue, Jr., that such assistance would be provided.

At this time, Team Dearborn UMC is working to communicate that need for assistance which could include conference staff, resources, finances, and more. We are actively seeking direction, guidelines, and leadership for this collaboration with Dearborn First UMC from our District. Please pray for this endeavor of collaboration and for its positive impact upon both church congregations and our community.

Seeing God’s Creation

Chris Hillier is attempting to be the first person to through-hike the Baja Divide Trail, which is used primarily by bikers using mountain bikes. Previously hikers have broken up the hike into sections and have done a section at a time to accomplish a complete hike of the entire trail. The Baja Divide is a rugged 1,700 mile off-pavement route down the length of the Baja California peninsula, from San Diego, CA, USA to San José del Cabo, BCS, MX.

Fifth Sunday Clothing DriveApril 29th will be the first opportunity in 2018 that Good Shepherd has to collect gently used clothing, working household items, and books for the Brightmoor United Methodist Church Free Store. Our donations help to stock the free store ministry, made possible through an initiative by Redford Aldersgate UMC. Every Saturday, 60-100 neighborhood people shop for their children, their homes or themselves. We will collect donations throughout 2018 on fifth Sundays in April, July, September, and December.

Thank you for your contributions and to Randy Jensen who helps deliver what Good Shepherd has collected.

Clean UpThe weather is warming…..It’s time for spring clean-up around the grounds of Good Shepherd. Your help is needed to rake leaves, trim shrubs, remove garden debris from the flower beds, cut back the ornamental grasses, and to pick up trash. Grab your garden tools and a friend or two and get outdoors to celebrate the arrival of spring and God’s seasonal beauty. If you have questions, talk to Fauna Navarre or Jan Poush.
